I followed the advice in your completely practical and not click bait thumbnail. I sold my home, car, clothes and even my gold teeth. Now I’m ready to marry this DJI camera and spend our lives together since it’s “all I need”. Thanks so much!! 😊
OH MY GOSH... I LOVE YOU... I do not know you... but I love your attitude. I am feeling the same way... I am an Actress... turned Acting Teacher/Director Writer... hopefully to turn my script into a Limited Mini TV Series (there is a good reason for that, instead of making a full length movie). I'm serious.. making a huge decision on my next move... ... and what you just described in your post... is actually what I'm doing... Seriously... Selling my house I co-own with my brothers... and will take the proceeds and ..... I DON"T KNOW... I"M SCARED TO MAKE A DECISION. BAHAHAHA "Do or Do Not... There is No Try" ... Yoda. Good luck... and God Bless
@@JudiChristopher😊 best of luck to you!! Just remember, the camera does not make the art. The ideas and the performance do!! Now go out there and make us all proud! 😃
@@constantsmile3370 AWWWWW ... Thank you for that vote of confidence... I totally agree with what you said about the Camera does not make the art. The backstory... *I could write a script on how the whole story came about writing a script for a play... that ended up becoming a movie. (I will try to make this short, but don't bet on it)... This is a Crazy story... but now it is my life. I am an Actress... kind'a retired... My daughter was in Drama in High school. I was writing for a Newspaper. When the Drama Teacher asked me to write a Stage PLAY ... it had to be in the 1950s... and about New Mexico. I began writing the play, 3 Act Structure. Then I found that the PLAY was turning into a Manuscript, so I thought I'll make the play, but also add to the story and write a novel... While writing this Manuscript--- Play... The Drama Teacher's Husband, who was home at this time between movies ... he was a Movie Director on films... had seen that I had given a copy to his wife of the on-going script/play. So he decided to sit down and "Critique" my Play/Manuscript. The next thing I know... I'm asked to go to a dinner party... except I am the only guest and the other two people are the Drama Teacher and her Movie Director Husband... I thought I was in trouble... At this private dinner party... Mr and Mrs told me to forget about writing for the school play and finish the manuscript and publish a book... but most of all to write a Screenplay for a movie. !!! "Excuse me"... I write for a newspaper... (well, just because I have 4 other manuscripts written... that doesn't mean anything... does it?) This Film Director was serious... So... I am going to write a Screenplay... better yet, a Limited Mini Series for TV... He said he would even direct it too... for $500,000. (yikes). The reason I would rather make a Limited Mini TV Series is after doing my due diligence... I found out, that more 'families" would rather stay home (save money) and watch a movie or a limited mini series on TV... like Hutu or Netflix that spend a small fortune to take their family to the movies... and they can watch it over and over. This has been very popular since COVID... people started staying home more. A 2 hour movie is much more expensive to make also Sorry this was so long. IF... you are still reading this.. so far... THANK YOU. This is a BIG Leap of Faith on my part...
I started my filmmaking career back in 1989, working my way up the ladder from a loader to second AC, first AC, DP, Steadicam operator, director, producer, and film production company owner. Over the years, I’ve worked with just about every film camera you can think of: ARRI 2C, 3, BL4, Aaton, Mitchell, Photosonics, Panavision, including underwater and aerial systems like Spacecam. I’ve been through all the challenges with equipment, post-production, and budget management. I retired in 2013, but I still keep up with how filmmaking has evolved, and honestly, it’s a lot easier and cheaper now than it was 30 years ago. Many filmmakers complain about the digital era, but the truth is, film was a medium for the privileged few. Digital really changed the game, democratizing the industry and giving more people a chance to explore their creativity. I’m happy to see a camera like DJI’s Ronin 4D; it’s made life so much easier, faster, and affordable for both cinematographers and producers. I hope ARRI, RED, SONY, Blackmagic, and others follow DJI and bring similar integrated solutions like the Ronin 4D. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the camera.
Great video! Image quality is ridiculous with this camera I also love that it essentially balance is itself on a tripod setup. It is definitely the ultimate all in one package for the price point. I have had my 4d for over 2 years and I have all the possible accessories. I think my favorite things on this camera are 1. Dynamic range 2. Transmission system 3. 3 channel follow focus 4. Gps module for car mounting 5. 4d flex pan axis lock for heavier lenses 6. Dual handles 7. Pro res raw and 4444xq (6k version) 8. Lens mount options 9. Blackmagic style easy menu system. 10. The price for everything all together is cheap and does not feel cluttered with an all in one ecosystem. This camera has changed a lot of how I shoot film and I am always excited to use it and even more excited to see what comes next for this system.
BRO my DREAM camera! The Ronin 4d. Wanted it since it's dropped and they keep making new upgrades for it. God will deliver when the time is right. I don't know how it'll come but I'm going to keep praying.
I'll tell you exactly how it'll come Work for it brotherb God does not give things. He gives you opportunities to get things when you work. He delivers if you ask for strength. He doesn't give it to you.He puts you in situations where you Earn it when you ask for prosperity. He allows you the ability to meet people who could change your life. But you still have to go up and talk to them
It is definitely heavy, but I think it compares to the size/weight of a C300/C500 with V-Mount or an FX9. I always use it with an Easyrig and can operate all day without any issues (it's about 1/3 of the weight of my other camera system I am using right now, so feels like a feather in comparison - haha)
for lightweight you need like an fx3 and an rs-- without the pro on the end. That said, my RS3 Pro with komodo and 11-20 tokina cine is beefy as well. with the 4d, you have better points of contact and is easier to use with an easy rig of sorts. It's niche but the weight shouldn't deter you if you fit that market. only downside with a smaller rig is like he said, lots of cables and different batteries. Add a v mount or gold mount to eliminate this and it bulks up quick.
@@CurrenSheldon an FX9 on a shoulder will give a better shot for filming people vs an easy rig which tends to film from lower angles looking upwards. In this industry there seems to be a lot of filming being done at waist height. Just my thoughts.👍
You can use the 4d flex and have the remote head at your fingertips. Chuck the 4D 6K brain in the backpack. Cheap to buy, and no weight on your forearms. Sony Rialto KILLER! 😢
Thanks for creating this video, Curren Sheldon❤ Your video is exceptionally detailed and provides valuable information. Thanks once again! Wishing your "Documentary Cinematic Interview Course" a large subscription base.
@@CurrenSheldon debating picking this up as well. When I don’t need the 8k or raw and I’m saying recording 4k HQ or even h.264. How long of record times are you finding with the other codecs
Got an Fx3 and Komodo. Honestly, I'm done with the Red. What you said in the beginning was spot on. It gets in the way, and slows down the workflow. This 4D always looked good, but you broke it down like a G thank you I love all my Dji stuff, may as well get their cine rig. I have their Focus pro, their RS3 Pro, The Mavic 3 the pocket 3, the mic 2s, and the action 4.... Jesus... GAS.... How much weight can the gimbal gold while still doing its job? I really like my Remus' but I heard the payload on these gimbals isn't that much and PL lenses will give you problems
I believe it's listed at 1kg, but I've seen tons of videos of people using the Atlas Mercury on it without much issues. I have used the Remus and they work great! You just need the counterweight from DJI. I have mostly been using the Cooke SP3s and those are incredible. Though, the Panasonic f1.8 prime set or any of the new lightweight f1.4s from Sony or Sigma would be a great, more affordable kit.
Curran - ignore the haters. I’ve been doing this for a living for 26 years, shooting corporate and small market broadcast work. If this lives up to the hype, it’s a game changer. It also makes the wannabe film boys nervous because they can’t have all that mattebox/rods/monitor/cable GAS crap hanging off of their ridiculously unusable camera rig. I live in the real world. Questions: 1. Do you run telephoto zoom lenses on this set up, and how do you get those lenses to balance? I run the Sony 70-200 2.8 V2 and never want to give it up 😂 2. What is the auto focus tracking performance with E-mount lenses? That is critical when operating a gimbal in fast moving situations.
It’s hard to make such a big switch especially if the majority of your clients request either Sony or Red. Brand recognition goes a long way in terms of working for clients, but having ONE ecosystem is definitely ideal. I’d do this if I was a solo creator making videos for myself OR starting all over again. Great video explaining everything!
True - You have to often go with what the client desires. But it is also your job as Director of Photography to show why a certain piece of equipment will be the best tool for the job. And that's what I did for a feature doc because I really believe it IS the best tool for this particular job. I've done other films (mockumentary, gritty verite), where I would not have chosen the 4D. I do hope they make a no gimbal version that still plays well in the incredible ecosystem they've created. Thanks for watching!
The clients will have to get used to new tech. I suspect if you pitch and show up with this monster, no one will complain. Guaranteed. I am saving to get it and discard everything else.
@@CurrenSheldon when I started using Blackmagic cameras, I only needed to show the clients once and they didn't complain. This is an often overemphasized worry. This is an even easier sell to any client in my view. From design to the output.
Nice summary about what makes this camera great. One thing though the TB50 battery does not work with the inspire 3, that would be the TB51. It would have been great if DJI made a different battery plate for the ronin 4d to allow the same batteries from the inspire 3. Would have been even better if you could use the inspire 3 camera on the 4d but DJI doest have good compatibility between different products.
Totally agree. If DJI ever does decide to compete more directly in the cinema camera or mirrorless space, I would be very scared if I was Canon, Sony, Nikon, and the rest. I hope they do. But, they have also carved out a very successful drone, gimbal, 4D, Osmo Pocket niche for themselves, so maybe don't have any reason to. Seems to be working for them - ha.
External monitors are necessary on cameras like the Red Komodo and on bigger productions but I find myself wanting this 4D more and more to get rid of all the extra accessories
One of the films I was in back in 2009... We used the Canon 5D Mark II... I thought I was in Heaven... since I was used to being on sets that used REEL FILM... Bahaha WOW... such a difference... I love Canon Cameras.
One thing you didn't comment on which I am always the most curious about is lens weight compatibility. The only thing that always keeps me from getting this is wanting really nice zoom lenses for quick moments that I cant recapture and don't have time for a lens change. The gimble can only handle so much weight. It can handle my nisi Athenas but I don't think it will handle my samyang 35 -150.
Yes it has a bout a 1kg limit, but has some restrictions on length as well. Not a lot of great zooms for it and DJI really needs to bring out a companion to their 17-28mm T3 with that functionality. Something like a 28-75mm T3 would be a huge boost for doc filmmaking. I shoot with primes A LOT these days, so there are plenty that work just fine and I haven't thought about it too much.
Thanks for your video. Great to see and well made! I'm using my 8k version for 8 months now and I'm loving it. My Canon C300iii is getting dusty...😅 I'm pairing the 4D with my DZOfilm Vespid lenses. It's right there on the limit of what the gimbal and the 4th axis can hold, but it works great. I wish they made the gimbal and 4th axis just a little bit bigger so I can use other lenses as well. And a version without gimbal for long lenses would be appreciated as well since the quality of the picture is amazing. And I agree with you on the weight. If you're used to bigger camera's the 4D's weight is really not an issue. I also do use it with an EasyRig though. Anyway, thanks again for your video. 👍🏻
My Canon C300 III got sold 😅(C70 is sticking around though!). I also LOVE the vespids. That would be a great pairing. Pretty amazing the 4D can handle them with a PL/EF mount as they're not the lightest set out there. I'd love both a more robust version for some anamorphics and a smaller, more nimble version for a good b-cam. Listening DJI?!
"And a version without gimbal for long lenses would be appreciated as well since the quality of the picture is amazing." - this can be achieved by pairing the 4D Flex Unit with Tilta's cage for that. Then you can mount even big lenses without any problem as they are supported by the rod system of the cage.
Doesn't achieve a look close to several of the cameras you mentioned and the rolling shutter is what made me sell my ronin-6d. It's versatile, but they need a global shutter and i'll go back to it.
I've been using the 8k version, which I think looks much, much better than the 6k version (probably resolution + OLPF + updated colors). I haven't found the rolling shutter to be a problem at all and have shot some boat-to-boat shots at 30-40mph. As well as running alongside professional runners.
no gimbal works to give you a smooth footage when you are shooting and 'walking or running', except for this one. That's why I want one so bad. I wonder if the footage looks just as smooth as if you were flying a drone. Gimbal footage with that up and down variation caused by walking or running is a problem that needed to be eliminated, well done to dji for doing that. Now I just have to wait till they make these for the average joe as I cannot at the moment justify the need to spend $12k for the 8k version since I'm not a professional cinematographer. But makes me wish I was. I would love to use that thing.
Just found your channel. Thank you for this video. It made me want to rent the 8k version for my next shortfilm project. It just seems the perfect camera for this project. Tnx for the clear and well explained info😊 I will combine it with the DZO vespid primes.
*Hi Curren. Thanks for making this video. Very informative. I have a question regarding audio-How is the on board audio setup ? What is the quality of the audio like ? I am a one man run and gun operation, so there are some situations where I need to get audio directly from the camera.*
Im very interested in this overkill camera (for my needs), but isn’t a more realistic title being "I replaced my multifunctional devices with propriatary devices"? 😁
@@bryllupsvideografIsak haha true - that title doesn’t have the same ring to it though, does it? Haha - maybe: “Ronin 4D allowed me to trash all my cables!”
Hey man, love your videos! Your work on the ronin 4D video made me buy the camera. Everything has worked great so far, it’s just been the auto focus for manual lenses that keeps bugging me, the focus keeps getting stuck on noses and glasses on people, have you ever run into this issue?
Oh good question - I haven't had enough experience with glasses to really see. I use manual focus 95% of the time, but I'll keep an eye out next time I use AF.
Agreed - the first version of this camera is so solid, it will be interesting to see what they can pull off with a second version. I'd guess there would be a different (smaller, lighter) iteration to come first. But we'll see!
I'm so sold on this camera! I know there's always cons to any system but everything on this is so well thought through. I love how they integrated operations in this camera. I'm curious how it handles vertical video? Do functions adjust? I know some people would rather crop in a vertical format so they dont flip the camera but I personally feel more intention if I shoot with the camera vertical when the end project calls for it.
@@tylervelasquez5639 I think it wouldn’t work if you tried to turn the camera vertically. Though I guess you could lock the gimbal and turn them to shoot vertically…
If you’re running a pro rig, you’ll most likely be powering from a mount so knocking down the batteries isn’t that enticing. It’s a cool concept but ronin 4d mk ii will most likely be the move. But beyond that, I’m not a huge fan of the color science on it, it can be cleaned up in post but it drags out my correction process. I also don’t want a fully gardened ecosystem because I want to be part of bigger crews and need compatible gear
Are you using the 6k or 8k version? I do feel the 8k version was a pretty big leap in terms of color and IQ. But everything else makes sense - systems and gears depend on the ecosystem you want to be a part of. Ronin 4D works perfectly for me and the feature films I'm shooting, but can definitely see how it would be a weird outlier on some jobs.
Nice review. It’s a marvellous bit of kit. Definitely the newcomer to the game is thinking outside the box and it pays off. 5.02 is that Warsaw old town?
@@CurrenSheldon bad news for me. Good news for the people that own them 😁 Eventually the price will go down though, I have a long breath with these things 👍🏻
Maybe it’s been asked, but what are we doing for ND on this rig? Are people using matte boxes, or screw on adapters, or what? I didn’t notice any internal
It has NINE stops of internal ND. How they managed that in such a small/tight space, I have no idea, but it is pretty incredible. By comparison, the electronic variable ND of something like the Sony FX6 only has 7 stops, which I find is often not enough. Canon has a bit more with 10-stops, but 9 stops seems to be plenty in most cases. Maaaaaybe in a very bright day with a f1.4 lens you would need a stop or two more, but can't complain in this package.
I rented it a couple times for some smaller commercial gigs, but bought it for a feature doc that is going to shoot for 50-60 days, so can pay it off over time. I MIGHT get a backup 8k head to have on hand, just in case - but so far haven't had any issues. Maybe it would be more worthwhile to get a backup body, since that 4th axis is probably the only part that could cause issues. Though I haven't heard a single report of that breaking.
@@CurrenSheldon Wow. I admit: I watched a bunch of your video here, but not all of it. Do you say that your. bought the thing? That's really compelling.
I have one, I want to replace my talking head camera with another, but so costly. The menu and ways you use and control this camera make everything else feel miserable. Of course the versatility is amazing as well, I have the cable, extra hand grips with my remote monitor, almost everything, it's all so easy. I wish they made a cheaper gimbal-less version to have as well.
I had to go through a Sony FX6 menu as an interview B-Cam and almost threw it out the window just trying to change some simple settings. DJI's menus are so straightforward and intuitive, it makes all the other manufacturers (except Black Magic) feel like 1997 computers. And YES, come on FX6-sized Ronin 1D with no gimbal but all the other functionality! I need a workhorse handheld/tripod/b-cam.
@@CurrenSheldon Sony finally make their control app not crap and it has a good menu for the fx6 to use. Don't even bother with the normal fx6 menu anymore.
Thanks for this video man... Really great quality. I've been thinking about this camera for over 6 months now! Mainly because I do not have a super big budget, otherwise I would probably already have gotten it. There are some pretty sweet deals going on right now and it seems dumb not to get one now almost... The only thing I'm thinking is that there might be a new version coming out in September following some DJI leaks(?). But even if a smaller version comes out, it would probably not come near the specs of the 8K. I also kind of want to get a heavier camera, even though it's a bit scary, that you always have to carry the weight of the gimbal, cause I also love handheld shooting. My last thought is about noise... I've seen such different experiences regarding low light and noise, that I am very confused. I feel like a lot of people do not know how to properly expose on this camera(?) and end up with super noisy footage, whether it is h.264, Pro Res HQ or RAW (which is noisier anyways). Some people even said that some units have a noise problem and others don't... But can that really be the case? You see, I still have a lot of questions haha, but it was great to see your video pop up in my feed this morning! Apart from a few things it still seems like this camera fits all my needs at the moment and would spare me buying a bunch of other things. Two other questions I would have: 1. are you able to use waveforms/focus peaking in all resolutions? I heard some people say that once you hot the record button those functions are gone..? 2. How is your experience using this purely handheld? As I said not always using the gimbal is something that I want to do and I am wondering if the drawbacks with this compared to an FX6 let's say are bearable. Thanks again for your effort and great review, any input is appreciated! ~ Phill
If you love handheld, probably not the camera for you. handheld and sticks can do so much for composition and gimbals can get played out. As far as something better coming out, this camera still checks lots of boxes (and I'm talking about the 6k version). What is infront of you camera is what matters more now a days than what camera you have. These create beautiful images and do well in "low light" but you have to exposure properly and know it's limitations of course. It's a heavier camera (really not too heavy) so it should feel solid for some "handheld-ish" shots. That said, like buying a RED komodo, once you get your accessories it'll add up quick. My 6k I'm like 11k in. Same with my Komodos, accessories add up! Also DJI kind of forces you to get their SSD cards and batteries. vmount/goldmount and cfast only options would be better for the prosumer.
@@buddyfx7026 thanks so much for your reply! I agree with what you are saying and that’s why the 8k deal is pretty good right now. I am actually a big gimbal fan, doing lots of moving shots, action etc. which is one of the reasons I am interested in this camera but obviously you don’t want every shot to look like it was done on a gimbal, so I’m just looking for ways to make both work. Still seems like the pros outweigh the cons here…
@@PhillGraaf Lots of great points by @buddyfx7026 and I'll echo a couple. Definitely not a camera for the handheld look. Get a C300 III for that. With that said, I've seen a lot of people use the DJI Flex with a cage and still have the great functionality and usability of the Ronin 4D. Noise - I think most of the complaints have been on people not quite understanding a raw workflow. There is NO noise reduction in ProRes Raw at all, so you have to apply it in post. I have mostly used ProRes 422HQ and always shoot at the native ISO of 320 or 1600 and have had zero issues with noise. Focus peaking always stays on for me, but there may be a couple of settings I haven't shot yet. But I have done most of them (8k HQ, ProRes Raw, 4k HQ, 4k 120, 4k 60). The waveform also sticks around when you're recording.
Thanks but why is the lens system on these cameras so rarely discussed? It looks like a fixed lens system (which is a bit off putting tbh) but are there other lens mount options? I'd like to know more.
Yep you can change the lens mount, so you have a pretty wide selection: E-Mount, L-Mount, DL-Mount, PL-Mount, and then can adapt EF Mount to any of the mirrorless mounts. When I rented it before I used the Panasonic f1.8 prime series and those were PERFECT. But I think the Sony f1.4 series would be great, the Sigma f2 and f1.4 primes, or even quite a few cinema lenses (I am using the Cooke SP3s with it for the feature doc I am shooting - 🤩). It's definitely a prime-lens system at this point, thought the DJI 17-28 is T3 lens is pretty great - I just never shoot that wide. DJI really does need to get a 28-75mm T3 lens out that is the same size, weight, and functionality as the wide angle.
Hey love the video just wanted to get your feedback on any cine lense you have used as I want to buy a set? do you shoot in raw? is the license worth it? Lastly if you grade as well in Davinci and would not mind sharing your d-log work flow.
Any cine lens under 800-900 grams will work just fine - LOVE the Cooke SP3s, but they're pretty pricey. I'm going to test out the new Simera-Cs. Also love the Vespids on there. Otherwise, any Panasonic or Sony prime willl work great.
@ thanks yea SP3s will be a rent job lol but would like to have Athena’s or the Vespid. But not a lot of companies rent for me to test before investing so any feedback you have or have heard appreciated. Currently rocking the 17-28 native lens and some of my old L series canon EF lenses.
Really nice review and incredible piece of equipment, thank you. Do you know if the Ronin 4D would be suitable for occasional virtual production setup?
Thanks for watching! And that's a good question - I would assume it would work just fine and you can basically have a remote head with the 7" monitor so that could be handy.
I have a Canon 5d mrk4 ... I want to switch for low light video and stills.... but I still don't know which to get A7iv or Fx3 because I want to do both.... suggestions please
If you’re planning on true hybrid shooting (Both Photo & Video-sometimes simultaneously) get the A7IV. The FX3 can shoot photo but I wouldn’t recommend it for serious photo work. Consider picking up an Atomos Ninja too, to cover the features that the FX3 has that the A7IV doesn’t on its own.
I still think this is the perfect camera short of not offering XLR inputs and WEIGHT. 10 lb may not seem like a lot, but man that's gonna wreak havoc on your back at night. Give me this package at about half that weight and I'll pick it up.
@@deansherwood I know about that. However, I have not heard glowing reviews. No one says its good and that they have probs getting in contact with DJI. The weight though is the real probl in my opinion.
I replied to another comment about weight, but my thoughts: "It is definitely heavy, but I think it compares to the size/weight of a C300/C500 with V-Mount or an FX9. I always use it with an Easyrig and can operate all day without any issues (it's about 1/3 of the weight of my other camera system I am using right now, so feels like a feather in comparison - haha)"
Man...if I could just hop on an hour discord or phone call with you, that would be awesome. I just want to know how to get to that next level, beyond a simple "UA-cam guy". Great content! Subscribed.
It’s an interesting camera for sure, but having rented the 6k version for several projects, I feel like it’s got a bit too much of that digital look that DJI cameras (meaning X5 and X7) have. Shot a project where similar setups were used with Red Komodo and 4D, and Komodo definitely looked better in the grade and required less fiddling to get a filmic image. Secondly, being limited with small lightweight lenses is a big downside for me, as most of the “interesting” looking glass is beyond what 4D gimbal can handle. Heck, even if we take Garland & Hardy duo as an example, Ex Machina and Annihilation look way cooler compared to Civil War. But hey, as far as all arounder cameras go, I think Ronin 4D is hard to beat and will perfectly suit most of sports, doc, action, corporate & event type of shoots, especially with a limited or no crew
If you're able , test out the 8k version - I think it's WAY nicer than the 6k version - the OLPF and that sensor does a lot of extra work to get a more filmic image. I am also using it primarily with the Cooke SP3s, which I think helps - haha.
I wouldn't necessarily say "It's all you need". Many factors in filmmaking to consider. I operate Steadicam Aero 30 with a Canon R5C for Anamorphic projects, Ronin 4D shoots spherical Full frame 17:9, no options for Anamorphic at all depsite being released back in 2021. But it does help for tight spaces where the Steadicam is too big of a rig. Some codecs are still limited in the 8K sensor as well, with weight limitations on certain zoom lenses. It's still a beast, but I'm sticking with my current gear until DJI bring some more firmware updates to the sensor and more lens compatibility.
Yes, the lack of anamorphic aspect ratios is a bummer, though the only lenses it could take right now are 1.5x anamorphics anyway. Which isn't too, too bad on a 16:9 sensor, in terms of image needed to crop.
I have tried a bit at the IBC fair, I thought this thing was going to be heavy but it feels perfect! Questions, is it possible to make the motion feel more natural and less ultra smooth. Lens choices, what limitations are there in weight, and codec, is there something to do really long recordings with (like compressed RAW), or maybe record to an external usb drive.
I'm going to make a controversial commente here... the small segment you showed of your doc King Coal, is the best looking image of all this video... What's the story with the C70? For sure and underated camera...
Not controversial at all - I have used the C70 for three years and it's an incredible camera. I think it may be the most underrated camera ever released - not sure why exactly, but it is definitely leaps and bounds better in image quality and usability than other cameras that seem to sell wayyyy better (FX3 and FX6 specifically). But it came out at a time when all everyone wanted was FULL FRAME!, so that probably hurt it - along with not having any good Super35 RF lenses to go with it.
@@CurrenSheldon Makes sense.. also the hype and marketing that Sony is known for... anyhow, will have to watch that King Coal, just saw the trailer and the footage looks beautiful. Congratulations.
@@brunoshoes864 True - Sony is the best in the business when it comes to pushing their products. And thank you! I have the link to the film in the description so feel free to check it out on Amazon or Apple - it just broadcast on POV/PBS and is now available for VOD.
If you strip down ronin 4d to bare minimum weight are you able to use on rs4pro for the track function for waypoints on the ronin app? If not why doesn’t ronin 4d have this function and rs4pro does and is there anyway to track for repeatable shots?
My least favorite thing about this camera which I hope they provide a module to fix is that you have to use proprietary batteries. Why not allow people to adapt their vmount or goldmount batteries? Feels a little dumb if they are trying to convince people to invest/transition to this system. I guarantee this wont be most peoples first camera, so they should really consider the fact that people are gonna have existing gear they are hoping to adapt to this camera to make it a lower cost entry.
I would love for it to use V-Mounts. The DJI batteries are great, slim, and makes the rig very streamlined, but yes, would be nice to be able to use non proprietary batteries.
@ exactly! I like the dji batteries too-I just think it was a big mistake not considering that people would probably want to use their Vmounts/gold mounts for it (well they probably considered it-but just didn’t make it a priority for some reason). But the problem we have rn is they aren’t producing enough batteries (seems like they are back ordered rn and I won’t be able to get one till December which is a huge inconvenience)
I have used a lot of different primes and they all work great. Currently running the Cooke SP3s, but have used the amazing Panasonic f1.8 series, Dulens mini primes, the new Thypoch Simera-Cs, Voigtlander M-Mount lenses, etc etc - Any of the newer Sony primes (even the f1.4 and f1.2 ones) would work fine as well and are well below the weight limit. As well as the Blazar Remus and DZO Vespids. No, you can't use chunky 1.2kg zooms on the Ronin 4D, but I rarely use zooms anyway - there are A LOT of lenses that work, you just can't use ANY lens with the gimbal (though, you can if you just use it like a normal, handheld camera and lock the gimbals).
From what I've seen, the L-Mount works much better than the E-Mount for AF and general reliability, so I'd go with some Panasonic or Sigma lenses. Panasonics f1.8 prime series (18, 24, 35, 50, and 85mm) are all the exact same size and weight, so are a perfect match for a gimbal device like the Ronin 4D. They also have a 28-200mm that is around the same size I'd LOVE to try on this camera - as well as a 100mm f2.8 macro that is the same size/weight as well. If you wanted something faster, all of the Sigma f1.4 primes are within the weight limit (20, 24, 35, 50, and 85mm). Or the Sigma Contemporary F2 lenses, which I LOVE the look and feel of.
Just wanted to focus on the usability aspect of the camera and how DJI's ecosystem greatly simplifies your life, but the IQ of the 8k is truly incredible. Probably my favorite I've used - I'd love to do some side-by-side tests against the Alexa Mini, C70, and some mirrorless cams. Let me know what you'd like to see and I'll see what I can do.
It would be nice to have the V-Mount option, but I usually only like V-Mounts to use D-Taps to power all of my accessories. But the battery does that here (monitor, follow focus, transmission), so I don't mind use the DJI battery. Plus the TB55 lasts for a LONG time and their 4-bay charger is WAY smaller than a 4-bay V-Mount charger.
@@CurrenSheldon I totally agree! If you have an inspire 3 it would be a great fit and just havin the ronin 4d. However I would love to add this to my gear and V MOUNTS are industry standard so it’s already in my gear bag. Also when traveling a TB55 is not possible with 176 wh.
I have about 20 tb50 batteries and I use a few tb50 to vmounts adapters to power anything else, they have amazing amp output as well. And charge with the dji battery station 8x at the same time,I think it’s a great system
I personally don't LOVE the color space DJI works in and also if you need to transcode I have found DJI products to be overly compressed that transcoding can nearly destroy the image.
sir l have one more qn sir in utube or in other apps when we scroll then sir is their not actual movement of images because I learned sir that there is no movement as screen is refreshing and generating frame with time
Good question - I'd have to look it up or ask DJI directly. I've only ever used it with one feed, but I know systems like the Hollyland Pyro can send to quite a few, so would be strange if the DJI couldn't do the same.
Maybe the next iteration will be up to spec but this camera is not ready to be on set. It's bells and whistles would be cool if the camera would actually camera.
The camera actually cameras trust me. It’s also been on plenty of sets. Most recently civil war and F1 movie. Bells and whistles aside the image is stellar. Take it from me when I saw this camera I just dismissed it as it looks ridiculous but once this sales guy put in my hands I felt like a kid playing a video game for the first time. Pure magic and easy to learn if you got the money for it. I have had mine for 2 years and I use it almost every day.
Oooh good question. I've never used a teleprompter with it, but I think you'd need something really light like the padcaster parrot - I mention it in my Gear That Has Simplified My Life Video.
I followed the advice in your completely practical and not click bait thumbnail. I sold my home, car, clothes and even my gold teeth. Now I’m ready to marry this DJI camera and spend our lives together since it’s “all I need”. Thanks so much!! 😊
I think you and the Ronin 8K will be very happy together.

AWWWWW ...
(well, just because I have 4 other manuscripts written... that doesn't mean anything... does it?)
This Film Director was serious...
So... I am going to write a Screenplay... better yet, a Limited Mini Series for TV...
He said he would even direct it too... for $500,000. (yikes).
The reason I would rather make a Limited Mini TV Series is
after doing my due diligence... I found out, that more 'families" would rather stay home (save money) and watch a movie or a limited mini series on TV... like Hutu or Netflix that spend a small fortune to take their family to the movies... and they can watch it over and over.
This has been very popular since COVID... people started staying home more.
A 2 hour movie is much more expensive to make also
Sorry this was so long.
IF... you are still reading this.. so far...

I think my favorite things on this camera are
1. Dynamic range
2. Transmission system
3. 3 channel follow focus
4. Gps module for car mounting
5. 4d flex pan axis lock for heavier lenses
6. Dual handles
7. Pro res raw and 4444xq (6k version)
8. Lens mount options
9. Blackmagic style easy menu system.
10. The price for everything all together is cheap and does not feel cluttered with an all in one ecosystem.
This camera has changed a lot of how I shoot film and I am always excited to use it and even more excited to see what comes next for this system.
YES. That's a great list. It just does so many things well and is just FUN to use, which means a lot after doing this work for over a decade.

I went to the DJI store the other day to check it out, and I can tell you this is an incredibly heavy camera for handheld shooting.
I wish I had a DJI store near me,
for lightweight you need like an fx3 and an rs-- without the pro on the end.

thank you
I love all my Dji stuff, may as well get their cine rig.
Questions:
1. Do you run telephoto zoom lenses on this set up, and how do you get those lenses to balance? I run the Sony 70-200 2.8 V2 and never want to give it up 😂
2. What is the auto focus tracking performance with E-mount lenses? That is critical when operating a gimbal in fast moving situations.

Def on my "some day" list! Love this camera
It's a great camera, but it's the ecosystem I love even more.
@@CurrenSheldon Totally agree! The ecosystem holds significant importance for Documentary Cinematic Interviews.
This actually nice option for Steady Cam replacement.
Exactly - compared to that it's crazy lightweight and easy to use.
It's great for ANY replacement. Handheld, crane, steadicam, dolly, shoulder cam, anything.
@@raredreamfootage wait, crane? this isn't going to get you crane shots... unless you're talking about detaching and attaching to a drone?

Very intriguing camera...DJI is probably the camera company that the Big Three need to be *very* aware of....they're innovators
We have the 6k and love it….buying the 8k in a week.
External monitors are necessary on cameras like the Red Komodo and on bigger productions but I find myself wanting this 4D more and more to get rid of all the extra accessories

We used the Canon 5D Mark II...
I thought I was in Heaven... since I was used to being on sets that used REEL FILM...
Bahaha
WOW... such a difference...
Can you set it up on a tripod and have the camera auto pan to follow a subject while recording? Asking for the multi taskers amongst us
Edelkrone has kit does that
Thanks for your video. Great to see and well made!
I'm using my 8k version for 8 months now and I'm loving it. My Canon C300iii is getting dusty...😅
I'm pairing the 4D with my DZOfilm Vespid lenses.

I'm so sold on this camera! I know there's always cons to any system but everything on this is so well thought through. I love how they integrated operations in this camera.
Is it worth to pay for that 17-28 DJI DL lens?

How does the image compare to a Red or Arri sensor? Thats my only concern with DJI is that I've always felt the image produced is more "digital"
the sensor is sony so Its pretty amazing but yeah its not quite there compared to the Arri sensor, but I've heard the 8K has a better sensor.

Interesting. So did you buy the 4D or rent it? If rent, about how much per week, and did they have backups available? thanks!
I rented it a couple times for some smaller commercial gigs, but bought it for a feature doc that is going to shoot for 50-60 days, so can pay it off over time. I MIGHT get a backup 8k head to have on hand, just in case - but so far haven't had any issues.

Two other questions I would have:
1. are you able to use waveforms/focus peaking in all resolutions?
@@CurrenSheldon Very much appreciate your reply Curren, thanks so much. Big help right there and gives me more clarity as well.
Great video!! Would love to shoot on one soon!
Thanks for watching! Once you shoot with one, you may never go back... beware.
@@CurrenSheldon that’s the only thing holding me back from shooting on it! Haha
I just dont have that kind of money, but i belive you.
@@CurrenSheldon Good info. Thanks! 🙂
TB50 don't work with the Inspire 3.. only the inspire 2
Could also use built in wireless microphone receivers.
I actually haven't tried if it can directly connect to the DJI Mic 2 (I have the Rode). Do you know if it is possible?
@@CurrenSheldon you can, yes
2 questions: Is the auto focus as good as the Sony A7S3, and can you lock off the gimbal so you can get a more hand-held look, should you choose.
There is an XLR add on
@@deansherwood I know about that.
Subscribed.
Thanks! I'm launching a course soon and will start doing 30 and 60 minute calls, so will let you know when that goes live.
@@CurrenSheldonsounds great!🎉
It’s an interesting camera for sure, but having rented the 6k version for several projects, I feel like it’s got a bit too much of that digital look that DJI cameras (meaning X5 and X7) have.
That tripod move at the start of the video was cool, could i ask what tripod that was please?
That was the Flowtech! It’s amazing. A cheaper option is the YC Onion Pineta Peak tripod.
❤informative
I have tried a bit at the IBC fair, I thought this thing was going to be heavy but it feels perfect! Questions, is it possible to make the motion feel more natural and less ultra smooth. Lens choices, what limitations are there in weight, and codec, is there something to do really long recordings with (like compressed RAW), or maybe record to an external usb drive.
oh and does the internal ND have any ir pollution?
You need XLR mic inputs.
I have the XLR and timecode module, so I do have two XLRs!
How’s your back feel after hours of shooting hand held?
Almost always use an easyrig or some similar support system. Back feels way better than some other massive cine cams I’ve used, that’s for sure.
So thw thing I don't get is aren't you VERY limited with the kinds of lenses you can use? I see you don't mention that in this video.....,
I have used a lot of different primes and they all work great.
What would you recommend for lenses with auto-focus for this camera?
Or the Sigma Contemporary F2 lenses, which I LOVE the look and feel of.
anything about image quality?
Just wanted to focus on the usability aspect of the camera and how DJI's ecosystem greatly simplifies your life, but the IQ of the 8k is truly incredible. Probably my favorite I've used - I'd love to do some side-by-side tests against the Alexa Mini, C70, and some mirrorless cams. Let me know what you'd like to see and I'll see what I can do.
Yes please do side by side, is it similar to a RED komodo image or more like an fx3 or an Alexa?
@@CurrenSheldon yes we need an image quality video
Finally. This is the future. So sick of depreciating camera gear and 20 minute battery life
It feels like a 2024 camera, for sure.
Wished they made an adapter to mount V mounts. then i would consider adding this to my gear.
@@Boyanoo You can travel with two batteries above 98wh, right?.... At least I do... haha.
@@CurrenSheldon depends on airline. 99% is maximum of 98wh batteries. Some cases are up to 150 or 180. But rarely
And for the low low price of 7,000.00 for the base model, you also can own this.
Yup - definitely not cheap - but it does a lot for the price.
sir l have one more qn sir in utube or in other apps when we scroll then sir is their not actual movement of images because I learned sir that there is no movement as screen is refreshing and generating frame with time
Sure. Any issues with the unit and you are screwed with no camera and no gimbal.
I've use blackmagic for years now and love the image. The 4D is the only camera that would tempt me away from BMD.
It definitely has a similar ethos when it comes to industry disruption and UI and design.
@@CurrenSheldon I love that they don't handicap their own products to sell you higher up the ecosystem.
All it now needs is built in variable nds.
7:45 how many feeds can you have with the module?
Good question - I'd have to look it up or ask DJI directly. I've only ever used it with one feed, but I know systems like the Hollyland Pyro can send to quite a few, so would be strange if the DJI couldn't do the same.
dang the price is that of my sony a1, all equipment and dji mini 3 pro together xD i also need to sell some gold teeth
1:37 they actually used most of it for the handheld sequences - about 67% the rest was Venice 2.
Not sure the exact breakdown, but what's most important is that nobody can tell when the film switches from Venice 2 to the Ronin 4D.
I need built in ND filters and 24-600mm lens.
THE DREAM. That lens better be f2 throughout the range and weigh 500 grams.
Can you test how to use one of these with a teleprompter and still stay nimble? I do a lot of talking head and that’s the last bit to solve.
Oooh good question. I've never used a teleprompter with it, but I think you'd need something really light like the padcaster parrot - I mention it in my Gear That Has Simplified My Life Video.
