    The top predator of the Jurrasic period, Allosaurs, tracks a crèche of sauropods, before facing off against a 7 ton male Stegosaurus.
    Broadcast in 1999, Walking with Dinosaurs set out to create the most accurate portrayal of prehistoric animals ever seen on the screen. Combining fact and informed speculation with cutting-edge computer graphics and animatronics effects, the series took two years to make.

    The most groundbreaking documentary series of all time. I never realised how far ahead of its time it was back when I was a kid.

      My thoughts exactly, also visually this series looks better then any other similar that has come out since, like Planet Dinosaur, Jurrasic world etc.. Honestly those look pretty horrible.

    • @Razovllay

      Rio Dante I'm not surprised, given the enormous budget. I believe it still holds the world record for the most expensive documentary series ever created.

      +Ryan Dong Wow i didn't know that , but still for being over a decade long it's pretty impressive. I really wish they would do a similar series but with all the updated discoveries that have been done, that would be awesome.

    • @Razovllay
      @Razovllay 8 років тому +14

      Rio Dante Yes. I imagine that many of the dinosaurs would now be covered in feathers if they did a remake.

    • @riodante3386

      +Ryan Dong Yeah for sure , also they could do an accurate portrayal of Spinosaurus with the discoveries they made in 2014-2015 , which would be really interesting.

    This is an old 1999 documentary and the CGI and special effects look better than most modern dinosaur documentaries, this is because the places seen in the background are real, the water splashes and the movement of the branches (when a dino is chewing off a tree) were made by real people... everything is done by computer now, dino documentaries look like a videogame

    • @godzillaisnuclea123
      @godzillaisnuclea123 9 років тому +89

      Not just that but the actual animation looks far better than the likes of planet dinosaur, which looked so wooden in comparison. Walking with Dinosaurs might not be the most accurate any more but its still the best Dinosaur documentary ever

    • @joshvswild949
      @joshvswild949 9 років тому +38

      ***** I loved planet dinosaur but walking with dinosaurs is undeniably better. I think one problem about modern documentary's is that they rely on detailed models instead of photorealism. Sadly planet dinosaur looked even worse because it is 100% cgi.

    • @nutyyyy
      @nutyyyy 9 років тому +15

      Josh vs Wild You also have to bear in mind Walking with Dinosaurs had a much bigger budget and took longer to make.

    • @joshvswild949
      @joshvswild949 9 років тому +19

      Lewis Carlin Yes I know. I think it is still the most expensive documentary ever made. One of the problems with planet dinosaur and a lot of other cg heavy shows is that they focus on detailing their models instead of getting photorealistic results. Hopefully one day the correct balance is made between the two but still, I was more then happy with planet dinosaur as a documentary.

      True. The ominous music as the Stegosaurus is unexpected for a herbivore, but fitting considering how well-armed it is, though the Allosaurus are no slouches in the menace department.

      @GermanLeftist 6 років тому +9

      Scp 999 They looked realistic and for the most part were. The writers and directors always had palaeontologists on stand by in order to be as most accurate as possible. The animators studied the movement of big land animals today in order to have the dinosaurs move as smoothly and realisticly as possible. They did everything they could to be as realistic and accurate as possible. Did they get some things wrong? Yes. Did they rely on the opinions of questionable experts too often sometimes? Yes. The only dinosaurs to be overplayed, really, are the raptors to be honest.

    • @baranguirus
      @baranguirus 6 років тому +25

      Anna Marianne Well, it depends on what effects they use and what tone they go for. If they used the same combination of CGI and animatronics with real backgrounds as they did here, and also mixed in science with life-like speculation, I'm sure that we'd get something just as amazing and spectacular.

    • @baranguirus
      @baranguirus 6 років тому +14

      Ginger4views Yeah, and it failed to live up to it; the CGI backgrounds are boring, all the dinosaurs have the same 5 roars over and over, and it never lets the story develop naturally; it's all about showing random vignettes related to fossil finds to prove that they're scientifically accurate. They kinda were, for the time, but the show has suffered in the last 7 years; many things have been proven wrong, which eventually happens to ALL media related to dinosaurs, but now that the novelty has worn off, it's become apparent that it's quite charmless and lifeless.

My mom had to keep going back every couple weeks to re-check it out even though I finished it I just watched it over and over. Then we moved but I kept it and our fee got bigger and bigger. My mom called the library and explained and I guess the guy understood as he to loved dinosaurs and they let us keep it and canceled the fee's we owed.

      Unfortunately, many people in todays society do not think dinosaurs and prehistory is cool. If you are an older person who likes those stuff, you are seen as immature or gay. Even the people who like dinosaurs say its immature to like them, but in a good way. Or they will say that you have an "inner child" for liking dinosaurs. I never understood the ideology of how liking dinosaurs is immature or having an "inner child". That is a stereotype!

    The documentary that changed history and our perception of dinosaurs. I mean, sure...Jurassic Park was fun, but this time BBC aimed for something as serious as their other nature documentaries...and they don't aim for low standards.
    Dinosaur Planet, Dinosaur Revolution, Dinotopia, and everything else that came after...this was the starting point.

      Paleontology unfortunately can't tell us too much about dinosaur behaviour. For all we know, despite having a small brain, stegosaurus might have been like the hippos and rhinos of today, EXTREMELY territorial and aggressive if confronted. Hippos have been known to attack everything from crocodiles to zebras to elephants that encroach on their territory. The poor sauropod baby was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. As for the allosaurus, why risk a potentially dangerous confrontation when there's free food just lying on the ground in front of the stegosarus? Just back off, wait for the stegosaurus to leave, then pick up the dead baby and walk back to your mate.
