The top predator of the Jurrasic period, Allosaurs, tracks a crèche of sauropods, before facing off against a 7 ton male Stegosaurus.
Broadcast in 1999, Walking with Dinosaurs set out to create the most accurate portrayal of prehistoric animals ever seen on the screen. Combining fact and informed speculation with cutting-edge computer graphics and animatronics effects, the series took two years to make.

The most groundbreaking documentary series of all time. I never realised how far ahead of its time it was back when I was a kid.
My thoughts exactly, also visually this series looks better then any other similar that has come out since, like Planet Dinosaur, Jurrasic world etc.. Honestly those look pretty horrible.
Rio Dante I'm not surprised, given the enormous budget. I believe it still holds the world record for the most expensive documentary series ever created.
+Ryan Dong Wow i didn't know that , but still for being over a decade long it's pretty impressive. I really wish they would do a similar series but with all the updated discoveries that have been done, that would be awesome.
Rio Dante Yes. I imagine that many of the dinosaurs would now be covered in feathers if they did a remake.
+Ryan Dong Yeah for sure , also they could do an accurate portrayal of Spinosaurus with the discoveries they made in 2014-2015 , which would be really interesting.
Looking at the comments thinking, _"MY PEOPLE!"_
Kal hahaha "MA MAN!" haha
Kal
Exactly
Kal MY MAN!! 😆😃
Kal Aye!
You called?
“Having a small brain for his body size.” That’s the nicest way of saying he’s an idiot I’ve ever heard.
Not necessarily, but yeah, he had a really small brain :
Stego is 4 meters High for 10 meters long, and his brain is around the size of an APRICOT.
Ryan Renolds
Its also the nicest way of calling someone a fatty
@@RoulicisThe s m o l b r a i n
Totally something Ryan Reynolds would say 😂😂
This was my childhood! I had this on VHS and I watched it like every single day xD
Me too!
Same! I knew everything about dinos, so i even walked like raptors :D
Hei senberg lowkey when my mom got me McDonald's chicken huggests I would chew it take it out my mouth put it on the table and bite and would eat it whole boi ima spinosaur
Chunniboy this and a series called when dinosaurs roamed the earth
Chunniboy same
This is over 10 years old and better than anything Discovery have ever come up with
What about Dinosaur Revolution?
***** I watched both. Really good series XD
+Dragonoid Berserker Just looked it up- decent, probably the second best I've seen but it didn't use actual models like this which puts WWD above anything else really. Crazy considering it was 1999 as Kellying said below
These are horrible depictions of dinosaurs, I suggest you watch dinosaur revolution or planet dinosaur, sorry to say, but this is no longer reliable.
Watched them both man, scientific updates may make it more reliable but production quality still can't beat this
This is an old 1999 documentary and the CGI and special effects look better than most modern dinosaur documentaries, this is because the places seen in the background are real, the water splashes and the movement of the branches (when a dino is chewing off a tree) were made by real people... everything is done by computer now, dino documentaries look like a videogame
Not just that but the actual animation looks far better than the likes of planet dinosaur, which looked so wooden in comparison. Walking with Dinosaurs might not be the most accurate any more but its still the best Dinosaur documentary ever
***** I loved planet dinosaur but walking with dinosaurs is undeniably better. I think one problem about modern documentary's is that they rely on detailed models instead of photorealism. Sadly planet dinosaur looked even worse because it is 100% cgi.
Josh vs Wild You also have to bear in mind Walking with Dinosaurs had a much bigger budget and took longer to make.
Lewis Carlin Yes I know. I think it is still the most expensive documentary ever made. One of the problems with planet dinosaur and a lot of other cg heavy shows is that they focus on detailing their models instead of getting photorealistic results. Hopefully one day the correct balance is made between the two but still, I was more then happy with planet dinosaur as a documentary.
Worst then videogames
Nostalgia TO THE EXTREME
indeed
Fork Nuggets indeed
i used to be scared of the intro theme song, of this documentary 😂
Ikrrr I remember watching this every second day when I was a kid
Dragon Crown same🤣
i love how the stegosaurus is presented as even more terrifying than the allosaurus, its not something you see with a herbivore often, but definitely earned
True. The ominous music as the Stegosaurus is unexpected for a herbivore, but fitting considering how well-armed it is, though the Allosaurus are no slouches in the menace department.
Oh my god the memories of my 11 year old self are flooding back
This kicks Walking with Dinosaurs The 3D Movie's ass.
HoopsAndDinoMan Agreed.
HoopsAndDinoMan yeah agreed
No doubt
Well said partner.
Carsen Strange, are you asking me?
No Dino documentary will ever come close to how good walking with dinosaurs is even though it's pretty outdated it still has a special place in my heart
what about planet dinosaur ?
Apart from planet dinosaur and more recently prehistoric planet
@@kernowpictures2002 5 years ago commentary
These dinosaurs look so real. BBC knows how to make a good dinosaur documentary.
i agree but the jurassic park/world dinosaurs are even more realistic
Coffee Soda This is really good and it was made in 1999.
Imran Anif *1999
CrabbierBull 391 nope jurrasic park world dinos are not realistic
Scp 999 They looked realistic and for the most part were. The writers and directors always had palaeontologists on stand by in order to be as most accurate as possible. The animators studied the movement of big land animals today in order to have the dinosaurs move as smoothly and realisticly as possible. They did everything they could to be as realistic and accurate as possible. Did they get some things wrong? Yes. Did they rely on the opinions of questionable experts too often sometimes? Yes. The only dinosaurs to be overplayed, really, are the raptors to be honest.
1:53 best allosaurus roar
For anyone wondering, this place is Fern Canyon in the Prairie Creek Redwood State Park.
0:50 this little one gets it. "Uh-oh" indeed.
Hahahaha
I used to laugh at that part when I was a kid XD
If they had brains that could compress stuff like humans, then many more would have exclaimed it.
yeah
I hope Walking with Dinosaurs will have a more scientifically up to date remake!
A sequel series would be nice. But the sad thing is, it would probably look worse.
I'd watch it!
Anna Rantasalo Why do you say that?
Anna Marianne Well, it depends on what effects they use and what tone they go for. If they used the same combination of CGI and animatronics with real backgrounds as they did here, and also mixed in science with life-like speculation, I'm sure that we'd get something just as amazing and spectacular.
Ginger4views Yeah, and it failed to live up to it; the CGI backgrounds are boring, all the dinosaurs have the same 5 roars over and over, and it never lets the story develop naturally; it's all about showing random vignettes related to fossil finds to prove that they're scientifically accurate. They kinda were, for the time, but the show has suffered in the last 7 years; many things have been proven wrong, which eventually happens to ALL media related to dinosaurs, but now that the novelty has worn off, it's become apparent that it's quite charmless and lifeless.
my childhood.when i had all of these episodes recorded on VHS and watched them all like every day.my parents got annoyed with me and hid the tape.
Kenneth Branagh has one of my favorite voices ever.
They look more convincing than a lot of documentaries that came later. And bear in mind this is from the 90s.
You can see why this is the most expensive documentary series per minute ever.
Is it just me or are the Allosaurus really beautiful? The coloring that they thought up is stunning and the way they run and move is just gorgeous.
WWD Allosaurus has always been what I envisioned when I think of Allosaurus.
I love its colors, but the head and face of the allosaurus are ugly and inaccurate. Also, for some reason, whenever they show that anamatronic, the head looks correct again for some reason, lol
im having my massive nostalgia right now.
I remember watching this scene when I was 5 years old
I absolutely loved it...
Shout out to the cameraman getting so close to these animals!
This joke is really getting old.
"Sauropodlets" so cute XD
Then they grow up to be huge giants that cause deforestation, eat craploads of plants, and shit out thousands of pounds of shit.
DarkPandaLord pretty much nature’s equivalent of yarders lol.
They wouldn’t be good yarders but they would be very good landscapers. Albeit with less precision that is
DarkPandaLord That sounds like people lol
"Saurpodlets" So delicuos
At 1:17 i thought the stegosaurus be like
*get out of here i'll hold them off*
Same until the poor little guy gets freaking wacked in the face
this amazing tv-show holds up even for today's standards... brings me back to my childhood.
LiveLoveLift92
It was inaccurate even for its time.
Luka Godec
There are much worse accuracy issues than you make it out to be, including those that were already known at the time.
1:22 Stegosaurus! why? i loved you! YOU WERE MY MOST HAVORITE HERBIVORE! *cough* actually its dryosaurus *cough*
Someone who unironically loves a small ornithopod? That's a refreshing change!
CJCroen1393 what? hes cute in Jpb( yes i play ludia games okay?)
Ze Master Baiter
I don't know what that is :o
CJCroen1393 i dont know you have dinosaurs and make other dinosaurs faint and make aquatic creatures and mammals too. its pretty much only about that.
CJCroen1393 but i mostly play it to see all the creatures, and for some reason dryosaurus has more ferocity than the yutyrannus, carnotaurus, albertosaurus and spinosaurus
Got this on VHS from my granddad when i was younger
Since he has passed away i always watch it on his bday and the day he died.
How is it possible that this old documentary from 1999 has more believable CGI than todays dino documentaries!?
Every other docu I've seen had incredibly awkward, cheap and stiff CGI that made it impossible for me to get sucked in and just believe for a second that these prehistoric animals were actually there.
EleanorTopsie because they know how to blend the CGI with the environment. And even use animatronics.
"Today's documentaries" are non-existent. Planet Dinosaur from 2011 was the last one.
I think I heard one of the babies going "Uh-oh." XD
Ryan Renolds
0:51
this is the one scene that, growing up, made me realise not all predators/prey are on the same team, they all just care about their own or their own species
Exactly it’s basic survival instincts and they are acting like real animals like they were when they were alive
I watched this at the age of 5 every single day!
And my best friends 5 year-old brothers favorite movie is Jurassic world
All im saying is after that little dude gets wrecked by spikey tail guy, his body is gone. therefore he simply got a little whiplash and then went on his marry day.
no body no crime.
01:23 When I watched that for first time I laughed... I know, I was a cruel kid.

Why did the mother do that el dep corbata RoJa?
Just found out that Gilderoy Lockhart narrated this show. Read all about it in his new book, Dancing with Dinosaurs.
And Benjamin Sisko narrated the version aired on Discovery Channel.
Kenneth Branagh narrated the british version
Kenneth Branagh was the original narrator, and for me, the best.
This is a documentary from 1999, over 20 years old, remember watching these on VHS back then when I was a kid and since then I still haven't seen anything not even close as good as this. I got a feeling there may never be anything better than this. The dinosaur look, their roars, the nature, the story, the music. It was just perfect. Thank you BBC for this masterpiece!
When the documentaries from the 90's look better then the ones from today

This show kicks butt! I used to watch it all time. Realistic Computer Graphics!
The allosaurus theme is still so damn good. I still quite like the design as well, even though it's not...entirely accurate.
It’s that color scheme that I really love
1:22 this was like the most brutal thing ever as a kid lol
I really enjoyed the narration of this series. Nostalgic!
I watched this every day. This is literally my childhood. I love Walking With Dinosaurs.
Woah, I've only just remembered how addicted to this show I was as a kid. I used to sit down every night with my granddad and watch it, it was so fascinating to me.
The Stegosaurus also flushes blood into it's Plates at the time of it's Mating Rituals. So the plates were used to regulate temperature, attract a female, warn predators and used as a suit of protective armor.
This series still amazes me to this day, phenomenal storytelling and creature effects!!!!
Childhood flashbacks!!!
i love this show
1:00 how u run in your dreams lol
Most traumatic scene of my childhood by far
I remember watching this stuff when I was like four years old. I was SOOO interested in Dino's back then. I still am now, but no one else I know is. 😭
When you're a kid you just don't realize how beautiful of a documentary this is
This was such an awesome series.
Im 18 years old and I love prehistoric life. In art school, I make dinosaur ceramics and I dedicate prehistoric life in my art. Am I immature?
No.
+Wooly Rhino don't worry about that, you are not.
No, on the contrary I think you are well suited for what you study
on the contrary.
Course not. It's history, well prehistory. I've always found that kind of stuff fascinating
I think the stegosaurus panicked
It is sad I can't go back in time as a little kid and watch this on Discovery Channel this is how much I miss my childhood
I loved watching this and Walking with Beasts as a kid. This is so nostalgic
At the end, that's like when I ask my girlfriend to share her fries...
MC Kaatt my babe I not as ugly as your😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Whos here after hearing Walking with Dinosaurs will be back in 2025
love this series
Ah man, I absolutely loved this series. Great music, great effects for its time, wonderfully chocolatey narration voice, brilliantly informative. Fantastic stuff :D
I remember I found this in a library when I was little and I instantly fell in love. My mom had to keep going back every couple weeks to re-check it out even though I finished it I just watched it over and over. Then we moved but I kept it and our fee got bigger and bigger. My mom called the library and explained and I guess the guy understood as he to loved dinosaurs and they let us keep it and canceled the fee's we owed.
Why do science TV corporations spend more money on sponsoring 1 hour interviews rather than cinematic documentaries like these...
Cuz capitalism
🇺🇸
Still holds up pretty well.
watched this as a child on VHS
1:41 Stegosaurus flushes blood into his plates, creating a frightening display of color.
I wish I can do that
Technically you do
When you get really angry at something, you turn red
Dinosaurs are cool
Unfortunately, many people in todays society do not think dinosaurs and prehistory is cool. If you are an older person who likes those stuff, you are seen as immature or gay. Even the people who like dinosaurs say its immature to like them, but in a good way. Or they will say that you have an "inner child" for liking dinosaurs. I never understood the ideology of how liking dinosaurs is immature or having an "inner child". That is a stereotype!
@@woolyrhino805 WTF are you saying ? Everyone love dinosaur ! Children, mature person and even some older
Didn't you remember Jurassic Park ?
Well said buddy.
Dinosaurs are beautiful, smart, strong and amazing creatures ever to walk the earth.
Dinosaurs are not lizards, not dumb or stupid either.
I remember that when I was a child, I knew the whole documentary, I remembered every single word. And still I watched it again and again.
This is such a fantastic scene! And such a fantastic documentary. The true predecessor to Primeval.
The documentary that changed history and our perception of dinosaurs. I mean, sure...Jurassic Park was fun, but this time BBC aimed for something as serious as their other nature documentaries...and they don't aim for low standards.
Dinosaur Planet, Dinosaur Revolution, Dinotopia, and everything else that came after...this was the starting point.
The era lasted from 1999-2011. Peak was 1999-2006, slowly went downhill after that. For now, Jurassic World has killed the dinosaur documentaries. Maybe they will return.
Anyone here just watched prehistoric planet?
Ahh yes,modern day WWD
Who’s here after the announcement of the return of this glorious series?
After all of these years this series still looks awesome..i am going to watch it all again..!
Man watching these babies die had me sad when I was a kid🥲
Great documentary I was hooked on this regardless and remember my dad taped it for me. I remember he eventually got me the Ben Stiller narrated version
0:44 roll credits
spinorex Someone watches Cinema sins
CinemaSins nerd!
0:44 me and my Brother coming in the kitchen when mum have bought pizza
BBC Walking with Dinosaurs and the Walking with series are my childhood and what got me into dinosaurs along with Jurassic Park. If you ask, I like this dinosaur documentary than what we have today
Have you heard of prehistoric planet recently? It has realism and just animals living their lives and a narrator,no humans at all!
Am i the only one who thinks this documentary is better than the entire 5 movies of jurassic world/park?
The walking with dinosaurs animators changed the model of Allosaurus after the walking with dinosaurs series ended lol (eyes are now behind the horns instead of horns becoming eye sockets)
What do you means by the Allosaurus Model Changes? Allosaurus only appears in Walking With Dinosaurs Series in 1999, so when Walking With Dinosaurs ended, why would the Walking With Dinosaurs animators changes the the Allosaurus Model? Do you means the Walking With Dinosaurs animators created the Allosaurus Model for Walking With Dinosaurs 1999 Series?
+Xxtapator compare this episode to the 'Ballad of Big Al' and see what I mean (focus on the horns)
Turtl3Man Nothing Changes.
+Xxtapator here look at this I used photoshop file://store02/students/gillk/Pictures/Allosaurus%20comparison.jpg Hopefully this helps you
+Turtl3Man Give me the ink, the ink is not working, I can't see the photoshop pictures.
I remembered watching this as a kid! I cried when the small baby dinosaurs died, hahaha
Somehow, this is the highest quality BBC dino doc this day- nothing beats it, and its a decade old.
Stunning. Seen this many times. Never gets old.
awww mean stegasaurus whacking and killing that little baby dino.
Allosaurus you should've at least tried on that Stegosaur.
yea the stegosaurus is kinda dumb but the allosaururs made a good choice by staying away because that tail would just destroy it.
เา
or the Allos could just take the dead baby and call it a day
WA Ryan it was agitated, the baby diplodocus did not know we're they were running into
Paleontology unfortunately can't tell us too much about dinosaur behaviour. For all we know, despite having a small brain, stegosaurus might have been like the hippos and rhinos of today, EXTREMELY territorial and aggressive if confronted. Hippos have been known to attack everything from crocodiles to zebras to elephants that encroach on their territory. The poor sauropod baby was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. As for the allosaurus, why risk a potentially dangerous confrontation when there's free food just lying on the ground in front of the stegosarus? Just back off, wait for the stegosaurus to leave, then pick up the dead baby and walk back to your mate.
Wouldn't it have been easier for Allosaurs to go after the cameraman?
XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
maan i’m coming back to this in 2020, the nostalgia is real, i’ve always loooved dinosaurs as a kid and it’s all i would pay attention to ever, i remember watching this video when it first came out. i’d sit there and watch videos like this and older ones too for like 7-10 hours a day learning so much, i knew like 20 species of dinos and their names before i could even write/spell my Own name. good visiting
oh god the music, so many flashbacks.... I had this on dvd as a kid, watched it hundreds of times
Is it just me, or is the Allosaurus roar just a pitched down version of the Velociraptor scream from Jurassic Park?
+BMWM3GTRLOVER what have you done to my brain!
no one wants to hear about Jurassic Park on a realistic documentary.
Oh I'm sorry. It just sounded familiar so I said so. I'm terribly sorry to inconvenience you.
+BMWM3GTRLOVER I found a video with some sound effects from the “Alien” series where its roars where similar to the Allosaurus here. Crazy, isn’t it?
+BMWM3GTRLOVER it's okay, I just really don't like those films, total misrepresentation of dinosaurs :) And to answer your question, yes it does sound like the "velociraptor", to me at least.
Ahh man I love this documentary I literally watched it all the time when I was a kid the narrator had such a great iconic and even atmospheric voice which suited the documentary perfectly
beautiful, marvelous, it makes me so happy every time i lay my eyes on it.
stegosaurus: i may have a stupid brain but i am still dangerous and powerful
As a child I never understood why the stegosaurus does that and as an adult I still don't
talk about calcium deposits!
It didn't know what was happening, and it reacted instinctively.
Stegosaurus has one of the smallest brain-to-body ratios of any dinosaur, and so was likely a very territorial animal. With so many little creatures rushing past it, it likely panicked and perceived them as threats
It had one of the smallest brains known to science. Almost anything could have agitated it.
Most People kill flies when they come close and get annoying too. ;)
I want a stegosaurus for Christmas
Only a Stegosaurus will do? XD
(ironically, I tend to color Stegosaurus like a hippopotamus when I draw it)
Jonathan Po Don't you know? A stegosaurus is for life, not just for Christmas.
You can have a puppy, though. No one really cares about puppies anymore by the time new year comes along, and then you can send the puppy out on to the street.
I love dogs....I would never get rid of my dog :(
+Jonathan Po they are all extinct!!! so how can u get a stegasaur for christmas?
cant you allow me to dream in peace?
My dad bought me this years ago, I still watch it to this day
I saw this series for the first time in like 2005, I think, when I was 10, and I must have seen it a million times. Amazing.
even thus this show is damn old, it still has some of the best looking dinosaurs and really nice practical effects.
When I saw the bit with the Stegosaurs I was like... "What the heck BBC?" Seriously I get nature can be unfair enough with the predators but... seriously what is wrong with you BBC?
Whats wrong with the Stegosaurus?
Dark Jedi I believe he means the part when the Stegosaurus kills the Diplodicus with it's thagamiser (spike on tail)
Chris Bernard Yes, I understand. But I'm assuming the creators of this series wanted to show how brutal and unfair the natural world actually is.

The Allosaurus is backing down from the Stegosaurus.
i remember when this just came out and my parents bought me the videos, and I loved them so much!! it's kinda funny seeing this again since now I see it's a 3d animation but at the time it was the most realistic thing I have ever seen on tv
