I saw him open for Buddy Guy in New Haven and was blown away. I had already got the CD, and he and the band put on spectacular, soulful show. I'll never forget it.
I mixed, and recorded for Nil Lara back in the VERY early days, and was mesmorized by his talent and graciousness.. to this day i wish i could still work with . was and still is a defining musical moment in my career.
All I know is that at the time the Sessions show aired, I'd not heard of him- but that broadcast made me an instant fan. Whatever happened to him...he should have had more success...should be more of a househod name than he is. He just faded away.
This should have been Album of the Year for 1996. I would have put it up against any other album. The closest to it would probably be Gillian Welch's first album which came out at the same time I believe.
Loved this song back in the day (late '90's)--only heard it on the college stations,though--didn't know at first that the was the same artist who did the cool-ass rock song "Baby" (also worth listening to.) Never understood why this artist didn't blow up after that. Nice voice--first time I've ever seen a video of him performing anything.
Been listening to Nil since early 90s. This song, Money Makes Monkey Dance, was sampled in a Burdines department store ad many moons ago. From what I've heard, the scoop on him not "making it" as a wide-based commercial presence was an entirely personal choice, in that he was not interested in being subjected to the politics of the music biz.
Hi Nil, Thank you for uploading this song and others, I've met you in the netherlands about 10 years ago with Robert Kruymer (dutch promotor at that time) when you did a gig for dutch television and still a fan and remember your beautiful spirit, wish you all the luck and succes maybe we meet again one day, Corinna van Keeken
Awesome, I got to be the first view. Thanks so much for posting this. Love to hear it, 2008 NL got played by far more that anything else I listened to. Still love to hear it. When will we see you at Georges in Arkansas!
