re: comments about comparing to Amy or Adele - Why does it have to be about who has the best voice - they are all different and depending on my mood I prefer the vocal arts of one versus the other. They are each their own and all pretty damned incredible. The worlds to damned competitive.

The song was recorded in 2008 as the title track for a Korean comeback, however due to last minute copyrights issues the song was unable to be released. "Gee" was eventually chosen to replace the song. From what I've heard the writer at the last minute chose to only give the song to Duffy. Eventually it was all settled very recently and SM was allowed to release the song.

Whatever happened to this singer, a few years back her music was constantly being
played on the radio. Now we never hear her, she just seems to have disappeared
off the radar. She has a unique voice, very reminiscent of a 60's singer like Lulu.
Incidentally, the musical intro reminds me of the Ben E King song "Stand by Me"
Her backstory is interesting in that she was formed and styled over by a indie label (Rough Trade who put money into transforming her) after been found on the Welsh version of the X Factor by one of the heads at Rough Trade, she wasn't like a Amy Winehouse or Adele who was listening to soul music from the 60's from a young age and could name of great soul acts and rare ones too. She was trained into this style, a bit like an X factor contestant but with a cooler indie label instead of Simon Cowell. Duffy would even admit that, that she never heard of most of the influences the critics were saying were in her music until her team trained her into a soul like singer. Bernard Butler (ex Guitar God from Britpop legends Suede) wrote some of her tunes along with others and produced her. I think they told her what to do and they trained her into this style, it worked amazingly she won Brits and Grammy awards, got number 1's everywhere and her album Rockferry sold millions and was critically acclaimed. She was pretty hip for a while.
Then came that Diet Coke advert which came across a bit like she was selling out (she lost her hip tag then), and rumblings she fired half the team that made her a star including her manager and wanted to produce and write her own stuff. That second album really showed that she should have been more grateful really as it stunk and sunk without a trace, she's nowhere near like the songwriters like Adele or Amy Winehouse were. She's a creation at the end of the day, made by a group of talented musicians and PR people behind the scenes who made her into a globe superstar. She got a bit big headed and thought she could do anything and was found out to be wrong. But Mercy is a great song and Rockferry was a good album. You really have to read into the backstory cause it really is interesting.

down Its a shame, because she could have made it really big, with a bit more
self belief, and determination.
Gary Dunn Other record producers have made a career out of giving their
acts endless covers versions of other peoples material. Maybe that's the path
Duffy should have pursued. Maybe she might still have been in the charts today.
She certainly had the singing abilty.

Mercy came out in 08 that's why she was nominated for a grammy... Duffy is one of the co writers of this song. I highly doubt that SM got this before it existed. Think about it; why do you think they couldn't release it at the time? Also even if SM produced this first, it's not like it would have been written by SNSD. Love them for their talent as performers, not whether or not they are performing an original song.

While I'm sure that "what [you've] heard" will always be accurate, Duffy co-wrote the song, making it her and the other writer's (forgot his name; steve something) property. Duffy released the song in the beginning of 08, and the Gee album was in 09, meaning they weren't recorded at the same time, but that dancing queen is a remake of the song, that had already hit the charts. The copyright issues were due to the fact that it was a remake of the already popular song.
