When people say industrial policy addresses supply and not demand then you can imagine why there is no development....in light of this short-sightedness.
What kind of national demand has the government of Jamaica created through their policies for the procurement of cars? Enough demand for a traffic disaster which itself mitigates productivity and nationalizes time-wasting.
What kind of demand has been created from policies permitting the establishment of fast-food restaurants? Enough demand for prolonged epidemics of diabetes and obesity.
Whatever you supply you condition demand for because you train public appetites and lifestyles.
What Jamaica needs to do is to build industries and value chains around its culture: namely its music and dance for which there are infinite global appetites especially among the youth and for which Jamaica seems to have an endless free supply. Nobody else in the world does this.
