I am mesmerized by the way you layer the pastels. It's difficult for me to envision how such an intricate maze of colors in the different layers ends up looking so beautiful. I am new to pastel. I have only painted 2 small studies, mostly with pastel pencils and I find I am too tight with my mark making. Your paintings are so impressionistic and beautiful 😍❤👌
Thank you so much… keep in mind…I’ve been doing this for about 17 years. I used to be really tight with my mark making too and I really had no idea how to layer colors. It can all be learned… It’s not rocket science and if you have a passion to paint… You can do it!
I agree with your sentiments! I watched from beginning to end, and I’m in awe! Course I noticed she has a BT, so I knew this was going to be something to join, beings my sweet BT, Lily, makes us fur baby buds! 😂
I can’t get over how you paint with almost the opposite colours to the photo untill the very end 😮I will have to watch a lot more to digest, it’s so counter intuitive but the effect is stunning ❤
@@monetcafe Thank you! The adventures of Sir Prancelot was a fine British animation television series in the 1970's, supposedly for children but I'm sure enjoyed by many adults too. As I've not seen it repeated I guess that means it's the better part of 50 years since I last saw it. Time flies when you're having fun..........!
YAY!! Thank you! @geri1864 Comments like this are part of why I do this. I love inspiring others, especially in their art journey! Thank you for your sweet comment!
So stimulating , I'm excited to work under your instruction. For years I have been wanting to learn pastel. It's hard to find instruction. Yours is so explicit . Working on getting the supplies , it's coming together. Also useing water colors which I have plenty of is a big assist to me.
Dear Susan, I haven't written you for a while. I was busy with art projects. My three works were selected and exhibited in New York. I don't have such great supplies for my art. I use kids watercolours and limited numbers of broken pieces of soft pastel. I also use alcohol to fix underpainting. I still have problems with my broken spine. One charity organisation gave me orthopedic matras and special pillows free and I became sleeping at night. Last week I tried to go on plein air painting. It was great but my spine hurt a lot after that. Now we have difficult time here. Problem with water and electricity supply. But I hope for the best. Thanks for your wonderful tutorials.
How exciting sweetheart, and the fact that you had limited and non-professional supplies says al lot about your skill! My heart breaks for you not only being under so many challenges because of being in a war-stricken country, but also for your back issues. That can be the worst pain and it seems to be something that doesn't give much relief. Is there any way I can see your paintings? Maybe you could email them to me.... my email is susanjjenkins@gmail.com

I don't use mats when I have my paintings framed and I prefer Museum glass but it's pretty expensive.... an alternative is AR-70 Glass. Never use non-glare glass. Hope that helps!
Just gorgeous! Your creations are so intuitive and vibrant. I am new to your channel and just love the way you describe what you are doing. I bought a few pastels but they are really not my thing, but will continue to practice. Regardless, so many of your techniques can be used with other mediums. Thanks for sharing!
Hi @sdigiaco, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image. To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:ua-cam.com/video/4XD4SezFyBg/v-deo.html&t=209s
@barbaraeastbourne5398 I don't currently have any DVDs and my patreon has lots of real time videos! Thanks for watching! Hope to see ya soon! www.patreon.com/susanjenkins
I’m not sure what you mean… I think any type of standard frame would work unless the painting is a non-standard size. This one actually is nonstandard so it would have to be custom framed.
I think you mean the thumbnail image that I use for this tutorial and I used it again at the beginning of the video. Yes, I used AI to generate a scene with an easel on an art table in some beautiful lighting and then I put it in Photoshop and added my painting onto the easel. I think it makes a nice presentation. I wish my studio looked like the one in the AI generated image. lol!
Pastels don't adhere to canvas, but I have had some success applying clear gesso to canvas (in two coats) and then applying pastel. It's pretty textured, but it works. Also, be sure to use clear gesso and not regular gesso. The clear gesso has more texture and helps the pastels to adhere.
Yes, I recently found out that it seems they’ve stopped offering their paper surfaces. I don’t know why and I’m glad I just made a huge order before they did that. I did find another company that offers some of the Fisher 400. www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/tim-fisher-400-art-pastel-paper-single-sheet-approx-50x70cm-light-buff-classic
If you have the budget, I really recommend the Sennelier 120 half stick set, called the Paris collection. You have enough colors and values to work with to create many paintings and the quality of these pastels is excellent. You can find them on Amazon for around $160 I think.
Oh boy.... this technique is one of my favorites with soft pastel painting! Check out what happens when you spritz alcohol with Pastel Painting!!
Thank you Susan. Loved watching this technique.
It turned out gorgeous 😍 ✨️ I love the way the underpainting shows through❤

What kind of paper do you use, for water color or a regular paper 400 grs
Dank! Heel mooi!
Thanks, I don’t have a translator, but I think this is a good comment. Ha ha ha.
Beautiful! Do you use fixative after the underpainting is finished? Do you ever use canvas paper as a surface for pastel work? Thx

Any hints on frames for the large ones?

Love it!
Thanks so much! This technique is so fun.
Love this painting. Curious. Is that photo of the painting on the easel at the beginning of the video AI generated?

❤💯👍👍👍👍👍
Can we use canvas instead of paper?
Pastels don't adhere to canvas, but I have had some success applying clear gesso to canvas (in two coats) and then applying pastel. It's pretty textured, but it works. Also, be sure to use clear gesso and not regular gesso. The clear gesso has more texture and helps the pastels to adhere.
When I go to Pro Art it just has panels not any paper.

What name brand of pastels would you recommend a beginner?
