Why the Street Series Died | EA’s $1,000,000,000 Mistake

- NBA Street and NFL Street were absolutely decimated by EA Games over the course of a couple years. These franchises, alongside games like SSX were big pushes for the company and gaming not but two generations ago. Now NBA Street Vol 2 leaves a lasting legacy that other games simply don't, yet there is no revival in sight. So today we look at how a game like NBA Street Vol 2 could essentially lead to the demise of an entire publisher and where EA went so wrong with these games.

"NBA Street wasn't built to be competitive" well sir I don't think you had an older brother.
X X word
Or friends we had nba streets tournaments
X X LMFAOOOO FACTS
Or older cousins
X X it was damn sure competitive if you wanted to stay on the system or pass the controller
The success of the PS2 era is easy to understand. The majority of users weren't online.
Bingo. Games developers and publishers were forced to tske chances. Some good. Some not. Now, a few bright spots in the AAA market aside, well yeah, the struggle is real.
Facts. Plain and simple. There weren't ways to exploit players for money.
Exactly. Developers couldn't "add" to games post-release in order to squeeze every dime out of their audience through DLC and microtransactions.
Yes true..
I had the same thought throughout this video. This isn't just because of DLC content, either. There just had to be a certain amount of content and entertainment built into a game in order to get people to play without the option to play with a pool of 3,000 people online. The games had to be complete by themselves, and be able to establish a world with ongoing communication between the player and the gameplay, and this all had to be done without everything being multiplayer. I guess my point is that the game had to provide its own personality, while online multiplayer is a cheap way of injecting it without actually working for it.
NBA Street Vol. 2 is the best basketball game I've ever played.
What a fun game. They need to remake it and have the updated players in it.
Which is better the first one or vol 2

That's why The Sims was killed of...you can't justify putting microtransactions into single player only games
It's been a while Jellal.
It stopped being about the fans and more about money
At least back in the days it didn't affect the product, like they where making great games until I'd say either mass effect 3 or the current gen arrived like out this whole generation of consoles I would say the only title that good was titanfall 2
The Def Jam fight series
Fuck yeah DEF JAM
BOUNCE THAT SHIT TILL IT MAKE YAH HURT
Def jam fight for NY
Def jam vendetta
Arguably the best big license fighting game made. They ruined the spirit of the series with def jam icon
roscoe collier icon looked good if it had more time it would have been a beast

I miss the Street games and SSX. The EASports BIG era was amazing and I’d love to see these series brought back (with real passion behind them)
This pretty much explains why I have quit gaming.

They need to remaster nba street volume two , that’s a good start !
Why not vol 1&2?
I was just about to comment this same thing. Thats all i want
You basically asking for micro transactions Lol
I must be the only one who thinks V3 was the best one
Trust me, you don't want that. You will get a terrible frankenstein's monster telling you to pay a few dollars here and there to enjoy a game you already paid for.
NBA Street Vol. 1 - 3 were amazing to me. I enjoyed them so much and it's a shame that EA has taken a major nose dive from being an amazing and fun game publisher to being what it is today...just money grabbers. This is by far one of the best UA-cam videos about gaming. Keep it up good sir.
1-3 was the best 💯
The lack of risk taking in 2019. Agreed. As much as I enjoy my ps4, I LOVE my ps2, and times like today when I pulled it out of my closet, dusted it off, and sat down to play NBA Street, Ready 2 Rumble 2, and Twisted Metal Black I found myself playing for the next six hours. I've never done that with my ps4. Watching this video I know why. There is no risk taking with the current generation of games.
Looks like EA has always butchered franchises

One of my fondest memories include my brother and I playing NBA Street Vol.2 as multiplayer on PS2 at home after school. My mom would make us some hot coco and we’d play and play after we finished our homework. We were so competitive to make the most perfect dunk or combo! I think that game still is a reason why my bro and I have such a good relationship. We literally grew up together.

The answer is real simple. Allow microsoft to put the street games on backwards compatible. Then use the numbers they make to gauge if it would be worth making a new title.
Worse case scenario is its not, and there ea access service has like double the content due to backwards compatible titles.
well said
They won't care. They put Skate 3 on backwards compatibility, even re-enabled the servers and when the game got popular, they even went so far as to print a couple thousand discs for retail again. What happened then? Nothing. No Skate 4, no news, no statement, nada.
If Skate 3's huge success years after the release can't change EA's mind, nothing will for any other of their old titles.
Otherwise, they already would've reacted given the fact that there was a sizeable modding community that worked on NBA Street Vol. 2 giving it roster updates, improving the graphics. Modded versions like NBA Street Vol. 2 2016 or NBASV2HDR show that there's a big interest in the game still.
Melanie L. video game industry has been taken over by something called artificial procedural generation. it's literally algorithms that use A.I. to automatically generate the game content...so the days of teams taking years to painstakingly develop every detail into a well crafted world and experience....very rare now. now its all just being copied and pasted using licensing from other companies and procedural generation....so they seem to be mostly only puting out games that a regurgitated designs with just different skins or flair here and there. this is why almost every big title is still either broken or unfinished in its release form. because these computer generated world's pasted together have not had the bugs worked out yet. this is why sequels of games often are a dumbed down version of the original and they seem to take away good features and aspects that OBVIOUSLY could have been kept and improved on. the sales game now is: once a game makes a name for itself they just rely on the multi million dollar ad campaigns to sell it...and since there are so many people to buy their product, they don't even care about repeat customers or customer loyalty because they know they will still sell enough copies to the endless supply of kids who havnt figured it out yet. monopolies have ruined the industry.
Melanie L. hold up these games exist ? like on pc or what ??? and if that’s the case someone needs to make servers for that shit so we can run it online

NFL street 2 even improved on the game. And NBA street 3 was pretty good with all its customization and uniform options that NBA live didnt even have.

NFL Street 2 is one of my favorite games ever. Madden games, on the other hand, I wouldn’t play even if they were free.
Madden 05 was pretty solid
Importing my guy from the streets to Madden was boss
Madden was good at one point then EA got greedy
same question is what happend to Blitz: The League?
Loved that game. Nothing more satisfying then laying down some hitsticks and seeing a damn x-ray of dudes collar bone snapping 😂
I think Blitz: The League fell off because they didn't have the coveted NFL license. You could also blame EA for that since they snatched exclusive rights to the NFL because NFL 2K was a far better game for half price than Madden and EA could only win by cheating. Because of that, they killed Blitz too.
Midway shutting down had a lot to do with no more Blitz The League games.
No Midway, no Blitz. Shame, it pretty much taught me everything I needed to know about the anatomy.

EA Touch me Now I lost My Wallet
Alot of these companies are the cause for their downfall. Graphics & immense stories don't always = *FUN!*
Bring back the fun video games!
I think that remastering NBA Street Vol. 2 and use that to test the waters of the market is a great first step to revive the series. Additionally, with sneaker culture being so intertwined with the sport and it becoming such a huge subculture, I'm sure big sneaker brands would throw money to be included in the game, thus making it more commercially viable. I also just want to dunk on some people in the most ridiculous ways again.
* sigh *
Well done Tyler.
Very well written.
This video depressed me. Filled me with nostalgia. I remember I called a classic game store asking them if they had NBA street and the lady sounded so surprised and excited.
I appreciate insomniac for what they did for spiderman.
They didn't care for money
They were spiderman man fans that created a spiderman game
...that was long overdue.
....I'm glad I still have my ps2 so i can travel back in time
Smh
Thank you tyler
And for this they got rewarded. From my understanding Spiderman sold really well (and probably still is). Why is it so hard for some companies to understand that the best way to sell a game is making it good and advertizing it well (sure Spiderman also got the Spiderman bonus but that's not all there is).

EA BIG was such a good studio in general
I don’t see the sports games making a come back but definitely the def jam games could make a come back for sure, create ur character upgrade him , make it open world with fights and jobs /side missions.. make it a mix of gta with fight night champion type story, maybe be able to create or join crews with other online players, could be huge depending how much they put into it

All you had to do was put the disc in and play away.
The "risks" that developers take with creative games is just them looking for games that will connect with audiences and that they can turn into franchises. Also the street games were heavily focused on multiplayer, they just had really good solo modes too.

I’ve been saying for the longest time that video games and the people that make them have lost touch with video games original purpose, to have fun!! Technology was limited in the early video game eras. We always used to fantasize about how cool it would be to play these hyper realistic games. As an older gamer I can honestly say it’s not all that I thought it would be. The games themselves now are undoubtedly beautiful. But a lot of them are way too complicated with many inputs and combos to learn to access more advanced more realistic movements or actions. I just want to sit down and play and have fun. Not have to attend college courses to learn how to play the game. Games have really become overwhelming for someone like me who’s a completist. There’s is way too much content. I miss the days of video game, arcade style of play. One of the main reasons I play is to relieve stress and have fun. Not to get more stressed by the sheer amount of tasks I have to complete or the ridiculous amount of moves or inputs I need to learn!!
sounds like you wana play journey
rob lucci video games were meant to be exactly that, games. More is not always better. At the end of the day you should feel happy when you’re about to play a game not overwhelmed by the sheer insanity of content. I’m not saying I don’t appreciate it. It just feels a bit daunting to 100% some of the bigger games like gta or red dead.

Maaaaaaaaan! I would throw SO much money at NBA Street right now if they made it a more polished version of Vol 2. Also the way to sell NBA Street in the current market is to package it as a sports game for people that don't like sports games. I HATE sports games because they have so many rules, restrictions, and horrible controls. I loved the street games because they were more relaxed and free. You could easily pick up the game and get a feel for it without a 2 hr tutorial. I loved the street games because you could feel the enjoyment of everyone that participated in the project. I loved the street games because they were a perfect example of fun > graphics...
Everyone now is so damn concerned with graphics and forgot what makes games really great... the story... the fun.. the escape... I don't want hyper realistic because I live in the real world already.... I play video games so I can do stuff I can't do in real life. I think its going to take an indie publisher to recreate NBA street, but dammit they will have to be talented. We would need a company like Digital Extremes ( Makers of Warframe) to create a game like this. Warframe looks amazing and plays amazing and it's a free to play game. If we were able to get an indie studio to pick up the idea, run with it, AND BE GREAT you would see another shift because the big companies would pay attention and jump back into the market so they can make some of that money.
NBA and NFL street kinda hit that market just like NBA JAM and NFL BLITZ did. There is a market out there that doesn't like conventional sports games but loves these spin off titles. They were just way more fun... to me at least. And i don' consider myself a sports fan.

I felt this deeply as a gamer 😔 because then generation of gamers wouldn’t never know what it was like to come home from school an hop on A Def jam game or any nba street game EA needs to to look at this video 💯
You should do a video on The Murder of Dead Space
Check out The Act Mans channel. He made an incredible video on the dead space franchise.
You mean DS3?
Also, mandalore gaming has 3 good dead space reviews
"DEAD SPACE WASN'T KILLED... | It Was Murdered."
DEF Jam Fight for NY and NBA Street 2 need remastered versions now! Get on it EA!!!
NBA street was by far my favorite games as a kid and I always wondered why it never showed up again. Now I know. Greed. Great video thank you.
This channel is good! You should be the most heard voice in gaming right now!!! You always get right what people want and need, companies should be consulting this channel to see what needs to be fixed!
Soundtrack in this video was pretty dope
Geo C you know the beats used?
Nico Tingzon
1. Pete rock and CL smooth - T.R.O.Y
2. Goapole - closer (7:46)
3. Biggie - juicy (10:37)
In between it sounds like vlog music.
Whats the song that starts at 15:00 minutes in this video, i love the melody

FRESH VOLTAGE Its a stripped down version of Forrest Gump by Frank Ocean
I’d say I’m surprised but...
Not really.
WTF happened to couch co-ops. Forget about the few friends that you have in the flesh let's focus on thousands of theoretical people that you may or may not be linked with.
It makes sense business wise. Now you have to buy multiple copies to play with friends.
