I remember watching this film at a Kurosawa Film Festival a few years ago. Not gonna lie, I cried during this scene. I thought I covered it well enough, until the lady sitting next to me offered me a tissue.
Cheer up - it's a happy movie about a person who finds ambition and a life of meaning in a meaningless universe, amidst his own death and failure to find happiness and fulfillment in the more common avenues (family, work, nation, partying, social life, simple pleasures, etc). A rare gem - a serious movie in a global culture of melodrama, hedonism, decadence, glamor, angst, noise, and trifles.
This film will haunt me for the rest of my life, and it makes me want to live a better one. Thank you, Akira Kurosawa, for this incredible work and thank you, Takashi Shimura, for such a heartbreaking performance. I never want to forget this.
Quoting from the movie : « How can I explain ? He poured his whole heart into that song of his. His haunting voice pierced the very depths of my own soul. »
I’ve been looking for the audio only of this scene. Tomorrow is my birthday. This made me very happy. Thank you for the early birthday present & God Bless.
I saw Ikiru back during Freshman year of college, my father had died suddenly two to three years before. Got me thinking a lot about things I wanted to do before my own time came.
life is brief, fall in love maidens before the crimson bloom fades from your lips before the tides of passion cool within you for those of you who know no tomorrow
Takashi Shimura has a deep, haunting voice. Reminded me Paul Robeson's voice. This scene is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful moment in cinema's history.

Ikiru is the most life affirming film ever made. Depressing? Not at all,

What a great actor he was!
If this scene and song don't make you cry then you have no soul.

This is one of my favorite songs ever put to film, and one of my favorite scenes ever. No movie has ever made me feel the way this one does.
You're speaking of IKIRU right? This is a remarkably life affirming film that I don't I will ever forget either! IKIRU after all means TO LIVE!

He is my favorite actor of all time.
Mike Frak It grows under your skin, does it not?
It sure does. It's unforgettable.
The single greatest thing ever captured on celluloid.

Thank you Takashi Shimura for this beautiful performance.
There's tears in my eyes, this is a blue moon occurrence for me.

I dare anyone to watch this scene and not bawl like a fucking baby.

We watched this movie in Existentialism and it depressed the hell out of me.
Pretty sure it’s supposed to make you happy/cathartic
@@Ben-xj2rf Probably. I don't remember it. :P
I suppose, but this one just really took the cake for me. Pretty much everything in that class was either depressing or confusing.
the ending is beautiful. Kurosawa, a Buddhist, crafted a film of Christian hope
michael vasquez I believe this film resonates universally and has nothing to do with religion
i love you for saying that

主はこの映画のこのシーンが
どの様に映ったのでしょうか。
私は幼い時にどのタイミングで
聴いたか覚えてないですが
ブランコのに乗って
悲しげに歌うこのシーンは
鮮明に覚えています。
Bien dicho, amigo mío. Y gracias a Dios por Google Translate.

I cried way too much with this scene. Literally sobbing like a baby.
i've never taken a dislike so personally i can't believe it i'm actually angry this video has a dislike
This is by far the best version of this song I can find. It has to be melancholy, slow, and sung by a man.
Utsukushii. Wasurerarenai.
I'm in endless tears...

There should be subtitles
