- Deciding where to texturize bobs and layers is more logical than you may think but many times, we don't texturize where the weight actually lives and could potentially cause new problems within the haircut! Follow these two quick tips to help determine where the weight lives and how to address it at the root of the problem.

Finally my ideas are real. I’m not a hair stylist but I do know my hair! I’ve been trying to explain this to my hairstylist for the past few cuts but they don’t like to be told how to cut hair. Please help me to know how Can a client tell the stylist to do this without upsetting them???
I totally feel u, that's what I'm facing too... so sad, don't hairstylist ever watch these good lessons to enhance themselves..?
I know what you mean. I got the "Rachel hair cut" back in 90's.. Loved it..they used shears, and hair razor..never had another haircut like the "Rachel" since..I don't want to insult my hairdresser..and she won't use the hair blade, to soften the layers

It is basic but as someone with thicker hair that asks stylists to remove weight, you would be surprised at how many just hack away in the back with regular scissors and use blending shears to go all away around the outside. Or they just take little point cuts off the bottom. Yikes.
Unfortunately, you are correct... this isn't something hairdressers are taught in detail within basic schooling. It's one of the most common mistakes we see in classes we teach.

I’m so glad I found this video because my hairdresser doesn’t seem to know this technique and instead she uses regular scissors and point cuts the ends. Question - do get it fixed do I need to let my hair grow out a bit or can it be fixed without sacrificing length?
I agree. I asked to have hair thinned and she just told me no. It looks better thick I Hate it. All this hair.
@@emsie5000 Girl, never let your stylist tell you how you should wear YOUR hair(unless it's truly damaging than listen), but if they say no, move on or tell them to do it anyway. Smh... bullies 😤

I'm not a hairdresser at all. Though with being quarantined, I'm unable to get to my stylist. I'm learning lots, so I can get the bulk down. It makes me so hot. Thank you!!!

Andrew, you do a great job explaining techniques. I’ve been doing hair for 40 yrs, been to countless classes and sometime leave thinking what did I just see?? I always get at least one tip I can utilize, but you break it down in a way I can really bring back to the chair. Thank you!

Thanks !! Just had this hair cut today! The client had so much hair! And I can’t believe how much I had to just keep cutting away to blend. I did long layers and elevated the hair, but should have not even attempted it! She did like it, but the density was overwhelming! I point cut all the way through thinking it was even too thick for thinning shears. I didn’t want to damage the hair. It was flat ironed , and soft with loads of curl after wetter down.
Hey Tosha... sounds like a challenging head of hair! But it also sounds like you were able to make her happy in the end... congrats on that!
I have thick hair and I know when a hair dresser is going to semi get things right because before they go into anything like this they completely flat iron my hair first. In very small sections.Wash, make basic cut wet, blow dry and flat iron and then do the texture or layers. Even then sometimes it's not perfect and after a few hours I need to trim a bit myself. But I expect that at this point.
Maybe an undercut?
Oh my goodness...so wish I watched this video sooner! I’ve had long layered hair for years. My stylist wanted me to go with an all one length bob/lob. I kept telling her my hair is so thick and that I didn’t think it would look good...well she finally talked me into it and now here we are in quarantine and I have to live with it. I have VERY thick hair. I am not happy with it at all. Since I have naturally wavy/curly hair, I’ve just been wearing it natural and not straightening it. It’s terrible straight. So much bulk in the ends! I’m thinking of trying another stylist and sending her this video.
I feel ur pain! I, too, have very thick, coars hair w/some curl to it. I have been asking stylists to do this for years as the way to remove weight ... they either don't understand or cant be bothered to listen to what I want cuz they end up giving me layers that look like shelves ... I end up with a hack job EVERY SINGLE TIME. Then I go into hibernation for the next 6-8 months while I wait for it to grow out and try all over again.

I have the same problem, in my case my mother is a hairstylist and cuts my hair, but always layers, she says because of the weight. But I have a photo of me and on the back of my had it is just so flat and then everything just hangs in bulk, even with curls., well I dislike that picture and stoped my mother cutting my hair. But no hairstylist in sight, but i Will remove some bulk by myself, because she says with that thinning scissor it is a bad idea.
The four of us should get together and cut each other’s hair. We all understand the frustration
@@CellaBella241 Same! I think hairdressers are so programmed to think that everyone wants thicker hair that they never put any learning into what to do when hair is too thick. It's frustrating.

SOS! I Love your videos! I have thick curly hair and unfortunately i have lost all the curl from about halfway down my hair due to the over texturizing. I realized after watching this and a couple other videos whats happened to my lost curls.. but how do I go forward from here?. I can't Just wash and wear anymore. I've already had quite a bit of length taken off because of this issue. And I would like to keep it. Any advice?
Love your videos Andrew. Could you show how to cut curly hair? I live in Japan and here they do wonders with straight hair, but when they see my curly hair, the only answer I receive is that I need to straighten it.

His videos have no talking, just cool electronic music, and the footage is sped up in most parts, only slowing down to demonstrate key techniques.

There are some "expat" salons out there that specialize in other textures... might be worth looking into. Many times you find them around military bases. That being said, we do have some curly videos coming up soon!

I have a client that has very curly hair below the occipital region .. so it wants to stack out after styling .. it’s straight on top and sides.. should I razor it.. thinning shears or just notch it to make it lay better with her bob cut..

How do I reverse my thinned hair, the ends of my hair was thinned and I hate it I want thicker hair and just my thickness in general.

How can I tell this to my hairdresser to do the same to my hair without me being weird and polite about it? Everytime I go there for a haircut its always the same. Volume at the mids-ends and with frizz I cannot do much without heat...
I'm glad to hear you want to be cautious in your approach with your hairdresser... sometimes people can get easily offended and feel like they are being told what to do. We actually have plans to do a video talking about how to approach these conversations with your hairdresser :-) In the meantime... what we suggest is an approach like this... "I was watching some UA-cam videos and I came across a video that made me wonder if it might work for my hair. Could I send it to you to get your opinion on it?"
This allows them to still feel that you trust them and their skillset to make the best recommendation for your hair. Hope that helps

So true hairdressers always seem to start from the top you still have the weight but your hair is shorter. That's not what I really want so difficult to get this over I don't want to teach them their job but....
I felt like it was a waste of a visit to a "professional hair stylist" because he told be he couldn't thin out or remove the heavy bulk of my hair unless it was in layers. I had gone for a long bob 😑.

Can you or have you done videos using texturing vs thinning shears on naturally curly thick hair? Often times, stylists razor through similarly to your instructions above and I end up with even frizzier hair afterward. The texturizing scissors are what works best to thin the sides of my shag which tends to grow out in a bell shape if the stylist doesn’t know what she/he is doing and thins too high up.

Could you cut a bad manikin... something like a complaint. It you hear often and then show how to fix it? Like “shelf cuts” in a layered bob.....how do we fix this without going back to the stylist who did it in the first place or another stylist you don’t know only to find that person made it worse? Obviously, I’m writing as a person who has been in the situation,

He's detailing and showing how to remove weight. When the hair is wet, you can't see where there is bulk as the hair is weighed down by water.

Lisa's comment is correct. We suggest that texturizing and detailing in haircuts should be done dry so that you can see the end result immediately.

Love short bob, I can't find someone who can do a good job in my hair. I need this, texturized a lot but they dont doit even if tell them. I have very thin hair but a lot in my head!! A lot specially behind ears and but the Time they finish it looks somehow good. But when i get home i look lime a mario bros 🍄 i just want less hair!!!

I hate all this "softening" the bulk thing. It always makes a good thick hair lifeless and static and flyaway. Blunt cutting at many different levels and angles does the job better, preserves the thickness and beauty of the hair and deals with bulk.
