  • The Silver Queen Hotel is the oldest operating hotel ‪@VirginiaCityNevada‬. Once known as “the richest city in the world” for the wealth of gold and silver mined from the Comstock Lode in the 1800s, it’s Nevada’s largest and best-known historic mining town. Built in 1876, the Silver Queen is dubbed such for its towering 16-ft. tall and 8-ft. wide portrait of a woman wearing a dress made from 210 pounds of silver in 3,261 Morgan and Peace dollars minted from silver dug from mines beneath this city. Her belt is fashioned from 28 twenty-dollar gold pieces, and her choker and bracelets are made from silver quarters and dimes. The portrait looks over a long bar that pre-dates the hotel. This building has a very interesting history and was once home to Mark Twain who operated his Territorial Enterprises within these walls before opening Nevada’s first newspaper office directly across the street. There is also paranormal activity reported here. #silverqueen #silverdollar #virginiacity #ghosttown #marktwain #oldwest #comstock #coincollecting #history #historicpreservation #silvercoins #goldcoins #coinart #mine #mining #haunted #numismatics
