I was beginning to learn how to Metalsmith when I took the 1st of two crafts classes when I was a junior & senior in high school between 1956-1958. That was when I was introduced to etching on aluminum; enameling on copper or fine silver using a kiln to fire the finely ground glass particles on the metal & jewelry making using sterling silver primarily with fine silver wire used for bezels surrounding cabachons on a sterling silver base. After graduating high school, I attended a small woman's 2-year college in New England where I learned more about making jewelry and another (older way) to solder silver. When I set up my home workshop, at first I was using a burns-a-matic torch set-up with a hose until I could afford an acetylene torch and then switched to that. When I was learning to make all kinds of jewelry, one had books, although not many in the 1960's, classes @ various craft centers in Connecticut, PA, No. Carolina & a few places in the West. I did a lot of experimenting using ideas from books & various craft centers in CT that I'd attended. Also, learned how to cut-polish cabachons as there was a horizontal Covington lapidary unit at the job I took after graduating from college. All-in-all, it was a long time teaching jewelry-making to psychiatric patients in a private hospital in New England, making jewelry in my home-workshop and occasional pieces for family & friends. Have not made anything since the mid-2000's as fingers have arthritis & don't have the dextarity they had years ago. Still have an interest in what jewelry craftsperson's are making today and in the future!

The triangular stone for this setting reminds me of Stellarite, which was available in the latter 1970's-early 1980's and was from Northern Mexico. At that time it was available from Fire Mountain Gems in North Hollywood, CA. I wrote some other information about Stellarite in an earlier post today when I saw a video Short about a Turquoise. When I saw the ad about Stellarite in the Lapidary Journal in 1977 (?), I was in my mid-twenties.

I've been there. Went there about 50 years ago with a friend and met the owner of the mine. He was nice enough to let us tour it. The reason we went was because we had read about this legend in a treasure hunter's magazine, and thought it would be cool to see it. I think the legend was just the owner promoting it for his own aims, because surely if there had been a river of black sand gold, it would have been found by now.
