    It grows pretty fast, around here it only give one or two flushes if growth a year. But the plant gains about 25% more canes each time.

    On bamboo there is two varieties . One clumping type which is not as invasive for it does not shoot runners underground and the other is your running spreading type which shoots runners underground and it is very vigorous and invasive if not managed and kept under control. Lots of my friends keep the runners in thick containers and plant the container with the running bamboo under ground to keep it under control granted it still shoots runners if its planted lower then your garden soil you want to plant top edge above ground then cover with mulch and bang presto it disappears and keeps it under control. Hope it helps !

    • @WesleyAPEX
      @WesleyAPEX 7 років тому

      Ellofez It's very easy to maintain if you have them planted in a lawn because when you mow you lawn the mower cuts any baby bamboo plants and that kills them. So you can manage it that way. That's what i do and i never noticed my black bamboo being a nuisance.

    Can you keep them small ? So cutting back old canes completely ? How long does a cane take to grow large and get leaves in the top ? Thanx in advance.
    I want to make more hight and shade in my back garden. And because they grow faster and in big containers i can start to plant them before i'm going to start changing (building) my garden. Normal trees take more time and don't like the re-potting.

    Brad, so you don't have a barrier around the bamboo? I have read a lot about the rhizome barriers but they seem quite time consuming to install and expensive to purchase. I recently purchased p. nigra (same as yours in the vid) but I am hesitant to plant them into my yard. Any suggestions?

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  9 років тому +3

      Mine are in a raised bed so they travel left and right but not out the front. The back is a rock wall so it can't go that way either. It does run after a few years so do be prepared.

    About 15ft tall (5m)
    -10F is -23.33C which is Antartica/Siberia. Sorry, but no bamboo growing there. It would be great if it could... but it can't. :(

      I always lose one or two canes late in the summer from the same thing. They come up 6 inches then turn yellow. I never worry about it because so many still are fine. Are all of your new canes doing this?

      Vijay Sawant Buy online Phyllostachys Vivax is the name. Fertilize only in the months between February and March. Mushroom compost works well and doesn't smell bad. Water as needed... for example if the leaves start to curl together or there is no rain forecasted for over a week

    There are invasive and non evasive bamboo, think about close neighbors when planting. It grows by roots, not seed. If you want to get rid of any, cut it short and cover with black plastic. Bamboo is a good cash money crop,

      Bamboo rarely goes to seed, when it does, it dies. So you get root cuttings to plant instead. Because of this, bamboos of a species tend to be very closely related. When a species biological clock says its time to go to seed, that species will go to seed and die off all around the world. The culms will produce copious seed at those times and hard-core bamboo enthusiasts and botanists go nuts. Its the time when new varieties or subspecies may appear.
