This rifle is on my "if I see one in a gun store or pawn shop it is going home with me" list.
It would be a good move!
After seeing this video, it is going on my list too.
I saw 2 of them at the Pawn Shop in August, but instead I selected their brother the Fieldmaster 572, which I didn't even know that I wanted until I held it in my hands. I love the action of the 572. It looks like they based the action of the Speedmaster on the same thing. It is a brilliant solution.
I have the 1964 marked 150 year Remington anniversary version. The only non matching part (that I know of) is the little metal half loop thingy that holds the foregrip wood flush onto the ammo tube. Years ago I called Remington to order the part according to the exploded parts diagram, and the wonderful lady on the phone said something to the effect of "Oh yeah! That little part seems to always get lost, we got a newly redesigned one that doesn't get lost I'll send you a replacement for free!" It had been priced like $25, but heck yeah! A few days later and viola! As good as new!
I remember shooting the gun way back when I was a 13y kid in the summer of 1974. My dad was a massive stickler for keeping his guns absolutely clean and lubed. I got it a new storage bag, and replaced the 1960's era 4X scope with a nice new $90 .22LR rated variable 3X9 [don't remember the brand]` from my local LGS. (much better than a typical $30 Walmart garbage scope!)
Anyway, Dad took the dirt nap and I inherited it. Unfortunately he had managed to sell off his 1960's Era Colt Woodsman that I SO LOVED! When we would patrol the cattle ranch on horseback, Dad always had either that Speedmaster or a lever action 30-30 in the saddle rifle sling, and that Colt Woodsman in a holster on his belt. I completely disassembled and found it completely immaculate. No surprise there, as I said Dad was a stickler for gun cleanliness, and lubed it, never actually took it to the range.
It's a little beat up with scratches because it was actually used as a ranch rifle! But it is perfectly functional and works as advertised.
When I was about 12 my mom and step dad gave me a 552 bdl custom deluxe. It's such a sweet gun. Unfortunately at the time my friend's had 10/22 Rugers and bought all the goodies like folding stock and high capacity magazines. Mine had the tube mag, left hand charging handle, open action and funny little deflector. Throughout my childhood I resented the gun, why couldn't I have the 10/22? I lived I rural Idaho and we went rock chuck hunting sil the time so I was always shooting it. Sometime later I realized what I have and have really come to appreciate it.

Excellent video! Thank you for putting this together. I saw this particular rifle a few days ago in a gun store and wondered what it was. Left hand charging handle and the brass deflector got my attention. I examined it and noticed the Crown was in perfect condition. That's a very good sign to me that whomever owned this before knew how to clean it (or never cleaned it). I ended up taking it home and then began the quest to figure out when it was made (no serial number so pre 1968). Finally discovered it was made in July of 1963. Very early rifle and in really good condition. Has a few scuff marks on the receiver (that black paint shows marks well) but the rest of the gun is rather pristine. I have to say it's going to be with me till I go to the beyond. Now I'm on a quest to get the 572. LOL. Oh, and if you look around on the Internet now these things are not cheap at all. I found a beat up one for $215 but most are $450 to $795 and that is for a used gun. Wow. Two Anniversary editions out there too and I think a Gallery version.
My dad bought a new one around 1970, give or take a year. He paid $54 for it at Howard Bros.. He could shoot it very well, and me just so so. I learned to shoot right handed, but my left eye is dominant. I got a Bushnell Custom 22 scope as a gift one year.
He gave me this gun in 1979. I took many a squirrel with it. I miss it terribly, since I had to sell it about 10 years ago for financial reasons. For a semi-auto it is very accurate. Thanks for the video, it brought back some memories.

I would strongly suggest removing the spring-loaded magazine tube follower before do any disassembly to this rifle, it would also be the last item inserted during reassembly. Attempting to reassemble the barrel and magazine tube follower together can make for some frustration since the follower end that is inserted in the tube will wobble around quite a bit, per its design and function..
I didn’t read through all the comments so someone may have addressed this, but one feature I love about this rifle is its size. I am 6’5” tall, and the 10-22 and other modern 22s are just too short in the stock. Beyond the quality and versatility of the 552, it is one of the few 22 rifles with the full sized frame. It makes it even more comfortable to shoot.

Amazing this video pops up today. I bought a Remington 552 used in 1964 and I just shot it yesterday for the first time in years. What an awesome gun and still deadly accurate. I have never had an issue with feed or ejection.

This 22 first appeared at Sears back in 1957, I bought mine new in the early 60's, very accurate gun that will shoot 22 shorts or longs interchangeably loaded--I still have mine, broke the front sight but I have a 4 power scope on mine. Best I remember I paid about $69 for mine new...

I inherited my stepfather's Speedmaster 552 from the mid to late 70's. It is just a beautiful weapon . My favorite ammunition as was his is the CCI Stinger 22LR.
Oh brother it looks like I got some work to do. I bought a 552 over 50 years ago and only cleaned the barrel until about 5 years ago when I seen a video on how to take the trigger group out and clean it. When I took it apart I could not believe the thing could even operate it was packed with dirt. This gun even thought it had never been properly cleaned in over 50 years never failed in any way. That video I mention did not remove the barrel so it is time to take it apart and do it correctly. Thanks for this video.

Me and my wife just finished up some target practicing with my Speedmaster. Its such a sweet little rifle, I love shooting it. It was a gift from father for my 16th bday, 19 years ago. I just realized after watching this video that mine has the 23" barrel and no engraving in the stock or fore grip. Im going to try to see if I can find the manufacture date. Awesome video, glad you love the little Speedmaster as much as I do.

Michael Bell Ive been trying to date it since I posted my first comment earlier. The barrel is stamped PGP with no serial number, the front sight is dove tailed and the barrel is 23 1/2". So according to the Remington page it was manufactured in June 1960 and its still as reliable as ever.
When shooting my 552, I load ten rounds of standard or HV ammo followed by one round of Aquila Super Calibri (or CCI Quiet). This way I get 10 bangs and one "ffft". Now I know my magazine is empty and I don't dry fire the rifle. At 50 yds, the last round doesn't hit the target so it doesn't mess up my groups.

Cooey model 60, (Wards,Sears Stevens,Springfield 87 series & of course the 550-1 all run shorts, longs & Lr. All of mine do anyway. My 1949 550-1 even runs CB shorts reliably. My 3 sons & I enjoy how quiet and accurate it is. Beautiful 552,! CCI Quet Semi Auto runs well in all of mine. The 710 Quiet not so much except my 550-1, bolt action and my 572 definitely. Great Video & testing!

The Remington 550-1 produced from 1951-1971 could shoot 22S, 22L, and 22LR. It is the first model to so. the 552 uses the same flouting chamber .

I love mine for the same reasons you love yours. It is reliable, fun to shoot and accurate. I also own the Remington 22 pump and even prefer it over the semi-auto. The bottom line is both are reliable and great values. It is a shame they are often over looked when people go out to purchase a 22 rifle.

i have a early 552 with 23" barrel that i bought from wal mart in 1969 after i came back from overseas. it is just as you say a great little 22.

My first rifle. Love it. Only draw back is how the barrel mates to the received. that slip fit does not hold zero. I found a simple Allen head machine screw through the receiver and pressing the barrel allows for simple maintenance and much better grouping. This option allows for using the intergraded dove tail scope attachment, instead of flying bridge style scope mount. CCI CBs have worked well for squirrel hunting up close and found it was more then sufficient at 10-30 yards.

As a teen, my dad taught me to shoot with that exact same gun, scope and all. I'll admit I never field stripped it. Only passed a rag with cleaner down the barrel, and never had any issues with the gun. I don't think he field stripped it either, at least not regularly. It's a surprisingly accurate gun.

Father has one he passed down to me. 23" Inch barrel with an old Tasco scope and shoots dime sized groups at 100 yards. I can't believe the quality of this gun, then again they always said things were made better back then. Oh yeah and it eats any ammo you feed it.

I have shot rabbits at 100 yard's with with my Nikon deerslayer scope and killed coyotes at 80 yard's with behind the ear shoots my Remington 552 was made in 1958 I believe and still shoots like it just came out the box

Your gun is a BDL the ADL has plain stocks and simple sights. I have my Grandfather's ADL he purchased in the early 70s. He bought it because it would shoot short, long and LR cartridges. I have taken many squirrels with this gun and is fun to shoot. It is not as accurate as my Henry 0001 but it does a decent job at squirrel ranges. Enjoyed your video and subscribed to your channel.

That model used to be known as the BDL model. I have the ADL which is no checking and basic .22 sights bead front U notch in the rear. Same gun though other wise. Recently I had a Case head blow off in my gun, (Rem, Thunderbolt from 8 years ago) no gun damage but i had to pull the barrel and use my bore snake with the brass ends not the loop one and pulled the case from the chamber with no damage to the chamber. good trick to know i think. have a good one!

The Remington 550-1 will also shoot Shorts, Longs and long rifle. I have the 552 made in 1967 and a 550-1 made in 1963. Both are excellent , accurate guns

I just bought one almost new condition from what you said its a earlier model longer barrel no checkering paid 150 came with a carry bag love your video was very helpful in finding out about my new gun thank you sir
A nice little tip, don’t put much if any oil in the action. If I put oil in mine it will go about 50 rounds of high velocity bullets before getting sluggish, but if I didn’t put any oil in the action it would easily go 100 rounds of high velocity bulk before getting too bad.

In the 70's we would shoot my granddad's Speedmaster. We shot soup cans and pop cans off of the fence post every time we went to visit. It may be my most favorite childhood memory.

Have one that was my grandfathers and it cycles pretty well for a gun that hasn't been fired for 15+ years since he passed...and it is pretty reliable I like fun gun to use and dosen't jam much even after being stagnent for a good decade plus.
Give it a good clean and lube and it should be even more reliable.
Yeah i did lube it up and clean it best of mty abilitys before veen fireing becasue how much dust that was in the internals i may have been in a shitty situation without hands if bad things happend. But yeah after that the charging handle wasn't wqanting to travel forward fully for some rounds and my guess is it was just rebreaking in if thats what you call it.

Yes I have one (550-1), it shoots the CCI QUIETS. It's SO QUIET, my old CAP PISTOL made MUCH more noise than the QUIETS.😲😉🤗😎
Yeah im so blessed I have one made in the early 70s and it has the long barrel. I inherited it from my pawpaw. Im a recovering drug addict and because of this rifle I have fallen in love with hunting! It shoots smooth. I can run 15 rounds in about a second.

I've had one for about 40 years now. It is the 23 " barrel and it has the same checkering yours does. They use to make a cheaper model thad didn't have checkering as well as the bdl model these are.
Wish they would offer a baseline model now.

Thanks for reviewing this one! I used to have one and it was a really good piece; it was amazing how the feed ramp was simply a machined and polished slot in the base of the barrel! I had an early model in plain walnut and basic sights, but that left over three-quarters of an inch of barrel end available for threading, theoretically of course! Zillions of rounds shot back when .22 ammo was cheap, and very little sign of wear. Now an inquisitive mind might study that wonderfully stout and simple trigger group, and determine that the secondary sear could be easily bypassed to make it a fully automatic gun? But theoretically speaking, it worked and it just did not work---the bolt is just too light, and it would double-feed every time, leaving the bullets gone and two smashed brass shells in the chamber! So, nobody needs to repeat those theoretical researches..........................elsullo
In theory a guy could add a little mass to the bolt pretty easy.
@@sch9002 Mine did the same thing. I added a thin piece of inner tube to the recoil bumper. Did not like the bucket Remingtons, but cycled 40 year old rounds flawlessly. Works great now;

Lovely looking ( and shooting ) rifle apparently, Mike. I have the opportunity to buy this one's 'father or even grand father' in that it's a Fieldmaster 121 pump action. It too can take short, long, or long rifle.
I haven't quite made up my mind yet, as I'm looking around the 'net' too see who has one and what the reviews may be on the '121'.

The 552 is worth every penny I paid for it, $135 in 1982. It’s been my experience that you should remove the magazine tube retaining screw just behind the muzzle, dribble on the “blue” Loctite, or eventually it will fall out.
Just shot some of the CCI Quiet out of my Ruger standard pistol last weekend and it would not cycle the slide ,still very quiet and still interesting...next my Remington Nylon 10c , research goes on. Thanks for the video.
I was pleasantly surprised with the 552. This will be the gun that sees the most CCI Quiet.
I may be corrected here but to my knowledge the 552 and maybe 551-1 are the only semi autos ever made to shoot s l lr
Think I got mine in 79 and only shot LR out of it. I didn’t shoot mine that much so still in great shape but I probably need to do a field strip cleaning, haven’t done that in years.
The most accurate rifle I have ever fired.

Still a great review of a great gun 5 years later but there is one mistake. I have a Remington 550-1 that is also a semi-auto that shoots shorts longs and long rifle. I believe it came before the 552. I also have a savage that does this but it's a slightly different design and works in a different way.
I meant to say still in production, I must have left that out. Which Savage model do you have?
Just don't accidentally leave your left thumb behind the cocking lever knob when firing. Ask me how I know :D

I have a model Ted Williams model 3A made in 1968 sold by sears and made by Winchester. same as their model 180 and it shoots short,long ,and long rifle also

My 552 Remington deluxe shoots great but after about 500rds it will not feed anything below high velocity ammo. Gotta keep them clean to run right.

When mine was newer it was like that, but once it had several thousand rounds through it it would shoot pretty much everything, dirty or not.
I have to confess, I bought one of these guns in 1964 and I never cleaned it. A few years ago I seen a video on disassembly so I gave it a try but only removed the trigger group. It was packed with crap I was amazed that the gun would even fire, but it always did. I only used good quality Peters ammo when I used it a lot.
Whats funny is my air rifle is louder than that. PCP though. I still have that 552 that my father bought in the late 70's.

My 552 will cycle with the long and long riffle quiets, but not the shorts. Older model picked it up in 1971.
Have you taken it apart and cleaned it? If not a good cleaning and lube might work.

Yes, I should have said only current production semi auto rifle made in the US that fires S,L or LR.
Bought mine new in 1965.Always the best semi auto I have shoot against. Mine holds 17 L.rifle and 22 shorts. Will occasionally fail to load 22 shorts. Other then that always runs perfect. After 25 yrs and thousands of rounds shooting I was have some misfire problems. Had it prof. cleaned and haven't looked back since. It is adult size though. I learned to fire 3 rds rapid and have successfully killed many ground hogs at 100 yards. using that technique.

I bought a 290 Winchester and it is a short long and long rifle 22 rifle it's going to have to go to the gunsmith if after a good cleaning doesn't get it working again
I have a brand new one i purchased several years ago but didn't shoot until now. It will not cycl 22 short or CCI Standard velocity. Im guessing it may need a break-in period. At least i hope so.
I have the exact same model rifle, which I bought brand new. Unfortunately, mine isn't very reliable and jams frequently, other than with CCI Stinger ammo. Nonetheless, I really love the rifle.

Great video how does that gun make out on hollow point 22 bullets?
You forgot to pop off the cover in front of trigger assembly to clean out old powder buildup .
Also , your gun is missing the internal metal band that goes inside foregrip and is what holds the front of fore stock tightly in place . You have to remove tubular magazine in order to remove fore stock .!

That is just a Simmons 3-9 Adjustable Objective 22 Magnum scope. Just threw it on for the video.
Great video. I was not aware there was a .22 Auto that shot shorts. I have been buying the Remington Bolt action when I find them since they shoot all shells. Need to look for one of these. Also did not think the sound of .22 long rifle sub sonic was that much louder that short?

Interesting, just put like 200 rnds of cci quiet through a speed master purchased by my dads grandpa (it’s one of the really old ones), and not a single round of cci quiet would cycle at all. Wonder if the different versions of the rifle function a little differently
Make sure you clean and lube the rifle.
Is the trigger guard plastic on the later models?
Mine is metal. I do not know if this has changed on the recently produced rifles. If it has you can look for a good used one.

In your opinion are they worth the $500 street price brand new?
I know they're a well built rifle with many features but $500 street with MSRP (new production) being $700 are they worth it?
I would consider a used one. I picked up mine for $350 on GunBroker. You have to be patient and wait for the right one at the right price. They are a $500 gun new but I prefer an excellent condition used one for less. My particular model with it's style stock was only made for a brief time.

Years ago An older gentleman had one for sale from around 1980 that was in very good condition.
He wanted $100 for it and I've been kicking myself for not getting it.

I have a marlin 795 which I tried to scope but any base I attach creeps back with the continual recoil. does the base u have on your 552 remain steady, or does it also creep back with recoil? thank you for posting such a fine video.

Have long felt a better name for the CCI Quiet 22 would be "CBLR". It's less that it's quiet, as much as it is a CB cap interpretation of the 22LR.
They are fun to shoot.
I'm taking apart my dads 552 and giving it a good cleaning for him. It was the first gun I ever shot and will be passed down to me. Apparently it's an older one I just learned...it has the 23" barrel. Does the remington website have a serial number look up? I'd love to be able to tell him what year it was produced. And my second question is I have never figured out how to lock the bolt back in the open position. Is there any way to do this, or was it not designed to do so? Thanks, great video!

It’s the markings on the barrel. Mine actually is stamped 71 after the letter marking.
