I'm obsessed with the history of Great Britain. It's really awesome. All of my ancestors are from Scotland and Ireland! Badass, hard working, strong, good people. My grandparents from Ireland were hard. Especially my grandmother. She was really tough. We knew she loved us but she never really said so. She was a good old braud.
I'm obsessed with history period this is a great documentary
DIFFICULT HISTORIES. THERE IS NO BORDER SCOTLAND/EIRE. ROMANS TRIED WITH HADRIAN WALL. DID NOT WORK: THEY CAME TO LOOK FOR TIN WHICH WE HAVE! THERE IS ALSO NO BORDER BETWEEN EIRE REPUBLIC AND NORTHERN IRELAND (BRITISH?) IF YOUR NAN WAS HARSH SOMETIMES WAS BECAUSE SHE WOULD REMEMBER HER HISTORY: THE 'FAMINE' CHILDREN, WOMEN ALL DEAD IN ROAD FOR WANT OF A POTATO. EVEN IN MORE MODERN TIMES: TERRIBLE SCANDAL FOR IRISH IN HORRIBLE PRISONS WITH NO JUSTICE. HUNGERSTRIKES. YOU CAN FIND YOUR 'CLAN' NAME VIA YOUR GRANDMOTHER OR ASK ME AND WILL DO! GOOD LUCK.
Back in 1971 I was serving in the US Navy on the USS Dahlgren DLG-12 and did a North Atlantic cruise. One of our port calls was Edinburgh Scotland during their Edinburgh Festival. I watched a play that was put on in one of those caves under the city. It was an anti-war play called "The Death of Abraham Lincoln" and was fascinating
I’m from Edinburgh in Scotland, I think you mean the Edinburgh vaults
@@fionanisbett3748 Probably so. It was a beautiful city and a fascinating festival!
That sounds absolutely fascinating.
It sounds like the infamously haunted Vaults, that allegedly, no-one has been able to stay in for a full night, without freaking out 👻
Visiting Britain was amazing. Full of history everywhere. Both above the ground and beneath it.
I love the fact that we have so much history below our feet, but I wish it wasn’t left to amateur historians to renovate the tunnels so the public can visit and learn about our underground history, the government should give restoration teams grants so the work can be arrived out more effectively than relying on volunteers, they should be able to hire in workers to do the more technical work and so speed up the process.
Thanks for sharing this excellent and informative film, very entertaining 😀👍🇬🇧🏴
Absolutely fascinating! Stumbled across your video searching for Bazalgette. Obviously, I've subscribed to your channel.
Allan Davies:Believe me,it's not easy to get councils to let us dig, there r Soo many rules & regs. And then ,if you're lucky it's 3days max.Though recently a council here has allowed two digs near the castle,to discover an old water mill & artifacts. The public r always v interested in what's been done & usually v polite & enjoy getting involved. You do get funny questions though at times, like "Have you found any dinosaurs yet?"And Tim draws a deep breath & says "That's paleontology. This is archaeology!"I would love to find a dino.Especially a plesiosaur. My favs.
This was a lot better than the History Channel show about Underground London. Thanks for posting!
+PortMantoo Let me guess. The History Channel claimed aliens dug them, right? :-)
Anything beyond their understanding or knowledge is alien.
I mean
.smeared poo would be better than that
Great documentary. Just goes to show what genius was displayed by the Victorians. Sensible, well thought out, long lasting solutions to almost every possible civil engineering problem imaginable and which were of benefit to the whole of the population rather than just the rich few. Makes me proud to be an Englishman.
+paul greenwood how gay is that!
SometimesInnocent
Seriously? That's your response?
paul greenwood
of course it isn't
+SometimesInnocent I measured it and it comes to 36.74% gay. You need to be at least 64.92% to be considered truly gay. So in answer to your question, it's not really very gay at all.
I just don't buy it. None of our history is as it seems.
Absolutely brilliant.. I could watch shows like this forever
Thank you - this was a fantastic video. As a child, I came across caves, tunnels and bomb sheltersin the UK, which I loved exploring
A documentary well worth watching! Great work, like historical facts from the UK!
"wicked trade"? Tell me which is more wicked, someone trying to make a living or someone stealing a percentage at gunpoint and calling it tax? (because THAT is what the "smugglers" were avoiding!)
Or toiling for subsistence wages until you die. Actually, this sounds a lot like the U.S. these days. The burgeoning underclass working in the underground economy of drugs and I.D. theft.
Think about wicked taxes next time you think of healthcare
38:40 "what kind of people are buried here?".....Dead ones!
I have just noticed your comment.. What kind of people are buried here ? Yes we are really just all the same. What does it matter what kind (of person) we were when it's coffin time !? Make your mark NOW -in the little time we have.
one can only hope!
The Butler Did It ..... 💒⛪⛪⛪⛪👻👻👻👻👻... Lol 😆
Bristol old city is riddled with tunnels but they are closed to the public by the council mores the pity, they would make a brilliant tourist attraction, due to the links to the port and its history.
I toured the underground vaults in Edinburgh this summer, and it was some eery stuff. I toured it with my friend. During the tour, I heard lots of pops and thumps, and it progressed into what sounded like people moaning and the room shaking. My friend claimed to not hear this, and so I asked for us to leave the tour early because I was a scaredy cat. I want to go back to finish it... :P
That vault tour sounds like a good but possibly scary time. I'm sensitive to the spirit realm and can guarantee you I'd feel energy and/or temperature changes before or immediately after entering one of those vaults.
The Barber of Seville.
I love show's like this Thanks for the upload
The British Isle is full of SOOOOOO much fascinating history. It amazes me. At every corner or under every piece of ground there is something from the deeep past. There's no telling what you would find just digging a garden or constructing a building.
Never ending discoveries that go back thousands of years. The UK has had more invasions of any country in the world. Why the UK has so much history to tell 🦴💀
say UK & Ireland not british isles 😊
Born in Dover. The spiral staircase for soldiers is a triple helix, not double. Three staircases in what we call ‘The Big Drop’, each staircase had a purpose, one for officers, one for officer’s families and staff and one for basic soldiers.
If I was ever walking down one of these tunnels and stumbled across one of those wax made people holding a gun pointed at me............well I guess I would most likely make a mess in me trousers.
Happy trails mates cheers
Thank you for uploading, love that documentaries like these are on UA-cam
Makes you wonder what they are building behind closed doors now 🤔😳😱🤗
Watching this video makes me wonder what is going on with the channel tunnel.
@@davidbillyard6629 what about the channel tunnel?
Love this kind of documentaries :)
Same I do too very interesting , hello how are :)
I love such documentaries as well, Hidden, secret, unknown to everyone, distant from population and alone.
I'd be too scared of earthquakes down there.
Maybe something todo with the war
There exists an area in Bridgewater Somerset to this day known as "the Clink" and the word has been used for many years to mean prison.
The "clink" prison was near the Elephant & Castle Inn South east London.
It’s so exciting. Robslondon is also definitely fantastic with old London times that can still be seen today. Have fun, Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Really enjoyed this. Apart from a few factual errors it is extremely well made.
Absolutely fascinating! Stumbled across your video searching for Bazalgette. Obviously, I've subscribed to your channel.
Thank you guys I Really enjoy watching these programs there's much more to learn
Excellent, really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing.
The most positive joyeuse narrator I've ever heard
yeah tunnel of love
ahhh tunnels... The mystical birthplace of the legendary Keith Flint (R.I.P)
Very interesting video thanks for sharing your great video with us. This is Ivana from Canada
I love caves, tunnels and all artificial underground spaces. WOW !
fantastic video
He's telling you the truth ive been in underground Edinburgh
Mary Kings close?
Jordan Bell yep me too...several times!
Why no mention of Nottingham, it has more caves than anywhere, they discover new ones all the time.
@Constitutional Remunerations more than likley.
So true. Nottingham is my home city; it’s caves are always forgotten in these things.
Coz Nottingham is a total shithole mate, and your caves are micky mouse caves, totally micky mouse mate.
Benson and hedges , Benson was a West country smugler owned Lundy island once, there's a Bensons cave there below the castle . Tobbacoo came from Virginia landed in the port of Bideford , I believe Benson use to run up the hedgerows with his tobbacco hence Benson and hedges cigarettes !. Sir Walter Raleigh was said to have landed tobbacoo into the uk at Bideford first
There happens to be a boat hide with a hedge row leading into a town northam, just before the main port of Bideford!. It would have avoided the customs office . Bensons turf also. Sure that's where Benson and hedges comes from!.
Smugler allways used hedgerows to scurry up with there haul.!
I miss england. Haven't been there in years. the history is all around you.
+pat goff as are the arrogant English prigs
The forests of England are riddled with vampires, phantoms and werewolves. I lived there for a number of years but I dare not venture beyond the city at night.
+False Teeth really? I'm so fascinated by that---leftovers from an American werewolf in London; stay to the path stay off the moors thing. I wish there was more info on that!
Walk upon the brooding Yorkshire moors or the haunted Cumbrian mountains and you'll soon feel the breath of the tormented souls.
So are knives, guns and acid. Stay well clear my friend.
monkton farleigh mines connected to mod tunnels in ww2 , and were left almost intact with wind turbines and street light switchgear, I explored these many times, through various means of entry. they were massive and you needed good torches and a good sense of direction. compasses were little or no use without a map..
Amazing information I never knew there was a underlake ballroom....I must visit this sometime.
3 people dont like the dark . Great upload thank you Ardee video

There are more tunnels on the opposite side of Dover ... some huge underground structures from the napoleonic wars ... they’re not open to the public but the locals know them.
Certainly raises a lot of questions. Thankyou for sharing.
“What kind of people are buried here?” “Dead people my dear. Dead people.” ☠️

I am very sceptical of that figure. Edinburgh has never exceeded 500,000 people. The environs today- ie the Lothian Region might exceed a million but that would be the whole region.
They are barefaced liars laughing in our faces. They lie about everything and we swallow it whole. They come to steal kill and destroy our heritage.
HOW THE HELL did you get Hannibal Lector to narrate this video??....simply amazing......Clarise...
The narrator doesn't have the charm of Hannibal Lecter
Haha
@@ellie698 who cares what you think Karen…hahahaha….
OMG he does sound slightly like Lecter!
interesting tunnels beneath the cities.
i love stuff like this.
***** me too.;)
***** if you find anything interesting send it to me.;)
Will do. 👍
***** thanks.;)
Bet you don’t know about the pink lady in the smuggler adventure Hastings or the smoking man ? No one will tell you in the fear of scaring you off . We have photos of them
Pretty cool. But I wish they spent more time on each location
Absolutely fascinating! Subscribed!
Quite well done! Fascinating history and well-producd!
How did all the engineers "forget" to damp proof the underground rooms?
Arden Video, It is more likely the Horned God figure might be named Cernunnos. The style of carving is not very Roman (Faunus), or Greek (Pan). The style here is more primitive, and has some resemblance to images of Cernunnos (Horned One).
This is very interesting. I've heard of the underground city in Edinburgh.
When I visited London with my ex. we certainly saw The Clink Museum and I think it was round there that there was a dark and dingy narrow pub which we went in but I can't remember it's name. It was like going back in time. I've looked at a map since and can't find which it might have been.
I am from Poland, so I did not understand much. I watched this movie because an English teacher recommended it to us.
there are subtitles you know?
@@fourshore502 No Polish subs tho
Great vid Mr L
I've been in the Welbeck tunnels :) and the underground ballroom and greenhouse there. Much of the tunnels are study areas for students now.
That's a bug lie to put on UA-cam, my uncle still works there and its never used for students
@@thomasbingham2797 this was in the 1990s. Apparently it moved and closed down so is no longer on that site. But I visited the student study rooms and was taken on a tour of some of the tunnels they had access to (which wasn't all of them, even students weren't allowed in some areas) - shown around by a student.
I used to attend socials there, as did my elder sister, and she dated a guy there for a while - it was him who took us around to show us the parts of the tunnels that the students used. I distinctly remember the underground study room full of desks and dividers.
Very good indeed!Thanks.
Absolutely fantastic viewing
03.48 The Driftwood Spar is a truly lovely place and dates I believe from the 16th Century. However it has only been a pub since the 1930s so the tunnel would not have intentionally been placed 'behind the bar'. Previously it was a warehouse. A lot of the timbers in it come from old ships and predate the 16th century.
I've been in that exact underground space in Edinburgh!
Thank God for english doco's- this is so much more watchable than the 'cities of the underworld' even tho that's one of the less INTENSE us made shows lol
Honestly. Do all Aussies just sit around thinking of ways to constantly bitch about the US? Are you that desperate for our attention or are you just envious? You should try to be more like the Kiwis. They're delightful, but you hate them, too, don't you?
Gotta agree that this doco is a lot less dramatic then the usa ones.
Oh and don't sit around bitching about the usa you obviously don't know to many Aussie.
Never knew the origin of The Clink before. Thank you.
a very interesting and useful programme. beautifully filmed.
Thank-you! This was great fun to watch! Kind of spoooky too 🙄 I really enjoyed it.
The secret city, home to a million people......well that's not a very good secret is it 🤔
Very interesting, hats off 🎩
Hello UK 🇬🇧 from USA 🇺🇸
Hello USA from UK
Oi oi greeting you from West Wales Pembrokeshire
Well hello urself usa
thank you for your wonderful tunnel stories. I really enjoyed it.
Some body got something wrong stating Welbeck Abbey was in Staffordshire when it's really in Nottinghamshire only out by about 70 miles or so.
The mistake is made at 31:40sec
Fascinating history I want to move to London so bad!!!!
Nooit van gehooord maar leuk om te weten :-)
I enjoyed that, very interesting indeed. TY.
Fascinating and very cool - thanks!
Not much underground, but good, -
a really good movie about smuggling.
A very old move about an English gang off the coast of Cornwall. Real atmospheric. Isolated and brutal gang lures unsuspecting ships of the rough seas to the coastline using false fires at night; only to murder the lot on board and make with the contents.
Great twist.
Greg Edgerton:Wreckers.Far worse than smugglers IMO.Stories are legion, about them.
The Cornwall mines are the story and tv show Poldark
25:42 those walls totally repainted.. imagine being that person who has to paint all that :/
Thank you for share with us.
Very informative, I knew about the sewers, but not to that extent. National Geographic magazine did a whole exert of London underground showing the different centeies of underground work and forgotten tunnels so to speak.
I’ve seen a lot of underground cities shows but I never seen this one somehow 🤷🏻♂️
This was a great piece I would love to visit most of those places if I ever leave Boston Massachusetts LOL
Some of the places I never even heard of like that glass room in the lake what a great program this was👍🏼
Just learned where the slag word The Clink came from thank you
So sad nothing has been posted in years. Was some good content!
Thank you for sharing this great video
Enjoyed watching, I would go look around
Being an Explore I enjoyed watching this video
This is fascinating!!
What a gem.
Never been in the forests but I will keep that in mind. Thanks for the warning.
Brilliant stuff👏. 👍.
When talking of the tree roots in the sewer the guy said “ during 1987 .....” I’m sorry but what did the storm of ‘87 have to do with tree roots ? Was that when they were first noticed ? Am I missing something ? Can anyone please help ?
Hell of a storm though
A million subterranean inhabitants?! Impossible.
I'm amazed at all the hidden dumbs and underground cities etc found all over the world . How were we able to build over all this without the soil on top being compromised. The sheer weight of our roads and buildings etc seems crazy . I cant put a post in the ground fr a fence in my yard without a permit fr fear of hitting a pipe or an electrical wire . How is all this beneath us ? Absolutely amazing .
Anybody else remember the Wonderful World of Disney's "the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh?"
great to see water still dripping downwards and not curving yet look
I’m late to the party but this was fascinating!
Awesome BG tunes! 👌
19:45 singing -"there's caves all over, the white cliffs of Dover"
Caves, tunnels, half started channel tunnels, early 19th century tunnels under the castle, WWII hospital and bunker, under the castle. Numerous caves that were used by smugglers, soldiers, locals avoiding the blitz. I can go on. Born and bred Dovorian.
Very interesting! 🙂
Amazing and spooky, too😖
Fascinating. Does anyone know when we stopped throwing human waste into the streets?
Sherry lee Raven . Did we stop?
The plague and dysentery I would think played a big part
It's a shame it's always left to the amateur photographers out there like my self to document this sort of stuff, but unfortunately the local authority's and police are too heavy handed and too over zealous with like minded amateur historians
22:20 Wasn’t Mary Ford the stage name of Iris Summers, an American vocalist? A completely different person, of course - just sharing some trivia 👍🏻
So Edinburgh has not changed
