This time we decided to explore the world’s third largest island... Borneo! Intrigued by its ancient equatorial rainforests, spectacular jungle wildlife, rich indigenous culture and culinary melting pot, we were looking for something wild - Borneo sure did not disappoint!
Come on an adventure with us as we explore Sabah, the Malaysian part of Borneo. We discover untouched primary rainforests, where you feel like you are in the Jurassic lost world; catch a glimpse in the dense canopy of wildlife such as the endangered orangutang and the cartoon-like proboscis monkey; learn about the heritage and old traditions of the Murut and the Kadazandusun tribes and admire the wide range of delicious cuisine of this magnificent island.
Before leaving Borneo, we wanted to experience seeing orangutans up close. We stopped at Sepilok, the home of one of the best research and rehabilitation facilities in Borneo for rescued orangutans and bornean sun bears. The centre does an excellent job welcoming orphaned or injured ourangutans for rehabilitation before returning them in the forest life.
You can see them up close from a platform at feeding time (10am) and sit and relax in the orphaned nursery watching the naughty youngsters with their comedic pace learning to climb, fight playing and sharing (or not) their food.
Right next to it is the sun bear rehabilitation centre where this very threatened species are rescued from pet trafficking or illegal zoos and farms and rehabilitated for potential release.
