Second: never, ever in your life buy industrial candys here. They are, for the most, of low quality. Try the artisanal shops

Plenty of your comments, guys, hit on the "plenty of sugar" key. Indeed, Brazilian candy tends to be almost cloyingly sweet, because Brazil is one of the largest sugarcane producers in the world (and back then when those candy were created, all the sugarcane was used for sugar-nowadays, there is a great deal of that produced sugarcane that goes into making ethanol for industrial and transportation uses as automotive fuel).

"Pingo de Leite": once again Anna hit it on the head: it is 'dulce de leche', but Brazilian doce de leite is made a little bit differently: Argentinian/Uruguayan dulce de leche is made with a bit of sodium bicarbonate to cut down on the acidity of the milk, while Brazilian doce de leite does not (hence the flavos being a bit different).

    Maria molly
    Balas de banana
    Crocan-chee
    Co-ca-da
    A-bo-bo-ra (literally translates to squash)
Also little facts. Most of these snacks should have been tried home made vs industrialized. Almost no Brazilian will buy the industrialized versions of these things. Sometimes i wonder why they even make it!
Also, Guaraná ice cold will be delicious. Also definitely need to try it on your own vs with snacks because I don’t think I’ve ever met a Canadian that would describe guaraná as subtle 😂
This was enjoyable to watch. Canadians and Americans are just two entirely different types of people huh? Though there were a few things you didn’t enjoy, it was never insulting to watch. American versions of these always have people spitting things out and making ugly faces. Thanks for this! Something fun to watch during camadas 2nd lockdown!

most of these you have to eat with proper sides or it is the side. then you would get a better idea of it
some of these we eat after lunch only... or in a specific occasion
one mistake it was to eat and not give some time, this can confuses the taste unless you go for something different(more salty) or give some time in between

Guys, you're crazy! How could you have come to Brazil without speaking Portuguese or at least having someone to help you with these kinds of things?!
Homemade sweets are waaaaaaay better! At the Mercado Municipal you probably would have found all the same candies but with much better taste! And you also made some mixes there that don't work at all, like drinking guaraná with sweets, for example, you should've had it with a salty snack, like coxinha, pastel or even with some feijoada... ;)
And there's something else: Brazilians are very hospitable but most people don't speak English and there's a lot of "profiteers" that could have taken major advantage of you...
But it's great that you liked our food here! It's just a pity that probably you didn't come to my state (Minas Gerais), where we have the best homemade sweets and a lot of different and tasteful dishes as well as awesome historical places to visit! Give it a try some day, you won't regret it! :)

The Banana candy doesn't taste bananey because the bananas are cooked (it's a banana+sugar mush that is cooked to caramelize the sugar and dehydrate the banana). Much like prunes don't taste like plums, raisins don't taste like grapes, marmalade does not taste like fresh quince and guava paste doesn't taste exactly like fresh guavas.

As a millenial, I only enjoy the paçoca, cocada and maria-mole. These are very outdated treats and, honestly, horrible. We don't usually eat them unless they're home made. You definetlly missed the brigadeiro (but it also needs to be home made).

Those snacks were not the best and most popular there. maria mole is popular in Sao Paulo, but flavorless, the pumpkin candy, not popular either, and just horrible quality.there are others more popular and much better.
