"Among the most electrifying voices of the emergent modern electronic music scene is desert sand feels warm at night, the pseudonym of UK musician William Hallworth-Cook. Melding the holistic, layered ambience of slushwave with the melodic worldbuilding of dreampunk, desert sand’s breathtaking work transports listeners to futuristic cities, naturalistic vistas and lonely highways. Needlejuice Records is proud to present his newest album, 新世界の弟子たち [New World Disciples] on all formats including a limited-edition sand-filled vinyl.
Setting desert sand’s most recent work apart from his contemporaries is his entirely original songwriting. Where most build soundscapes out of 80’s pop samples, Hallworth-Cook constructs his own source material from scratch before sampling and re-contextualizing it into elegiac cinematic experiences. 新世界の弟子たち is desert sand’s sixth sample-free album.
Befitting the wholly original musical content of the album is desert sand’s most explicit concept yet. 新世界の弟子たち explores spirituality and new age religion as an escape from the dull, bleak and dehumanizing realities of modern civilization. Melancholy expressions of desire and longing are transformed into euphoric movements of ecclesiastic triumph and fulfilment, tinged with the knowledge that something greater is waiting out of sight at the end of an unending, arduous journey.
Moody, haunting and yet uplifting, 新世界の弟子たち cements desert sand feels warm at night as a scene-transcending heavyweight of expressionistic sound craft. It bridges the divide between underground movements such as dreampunk and more mainstream ethereal electronic music, as much Julianna Barwick as 2814. In doing so, it proves that these scenes are not just here to stay, but only beginning to reach their greatest heights."

I think it's music that doesn't grab your attention, but you can pay attention to it if you so wish. One can of course pay attention to it if one wishes though to as you are saying :-) But with that being said, is modal jazz as an example ambient then? It doesn't really demand your attention, is not about catchy melodies and is usually just in the background, creating an "atmosphere". So yes, very confusing.

I'm into melancholia of all flavors but DSFWAN and this album specifically are on a different level entirely.. The genius is is how beautiful it sounds, how can something that sounds so serene and peaceful awaken the deepest feelings of emptiness in my soul? It doesn't feel "unhealthy" to me though, it feels therapeutic in a way that this music can catalyze an existential crisis on command. The feelings are always there, buried deep down, this just helps me exfoliate and integrate them into my being and ultimately transmute them into something positive. True meaning and purpose in life. DSFWAN if you're reading this I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your contributions to humanity

recently had a dream where I was on this alien planet, with red sand as far as the eye could see. The sky was dim black and red, as if it was eternally just after sunset. There were some aliens living in large primitive buildings made of clay/stone bricks and old wood. The structure with the most wood in it collapsed, so there probably hadn't been wood in a long time. I dreamed that the last technology I had was failing, and was preparing to live with the aliens indefinitely in the event I couldn't leave again.
This picture and sound track brings me back to that. pretty cool dream.

I am born 1965, and i still exactly know the way i felt my own and the life around me in the 70's and 80's; there was a lot of ZEN in much more people than nowadays, especially in the 70's. Like an
    Eternal Saturday...
The 80's was (for me) a decade of thinking and trying what the Future could bring; everything looked and sounded new, but mostly weird and quite artificial, but that art. was , in a way, more real than
the grey past of our hard working parents (thank you forever!) AND we could experience the vibe, the vision of a possible future, almost at hand; but 'til now only living in dreams, in old ,golden memories, AND in this Great Music here.
    But one day
    Living forever in that Realm...

I look up and find a picture of a desert, it had a big pyramid and one lonely camel. This reminds me of that, the comfortable feeling, but also the unnerving imagery. I feel as if the name “desert sand feels warm at night” really speaks to something inside of myself, I personally have always had a interest in what lies above, so the name “desert sand feels warm at night” will act as a proverbial couch for my comfortable Viewing of the far away stars. This couch I shall lay on kind of acts as a paternal figure holding me in my most open of states a completely transfixed state which allows me to freely ponder on size, place and my own belonging in this universe without worry of earthly matters. It’s kind of beautiful how this name can become a symbol for free thought, the same free thought we all experienced as children. Asking questions about everything without worry of the answer we may be given, I feel as if that’s a reasoning for my own sense of nostalgia when hearing “desert sand feels warm at night”’s music.
I would be interested to hear other peoples thoughts on connection from this piece to nostalgia.
Thanks for reading, have a good day or night, you deserve it.

This is our alienated existence today, but there is something out there beyond our isolated human world---the universe and all the rest of creation. We have managed to reduce all these wonders to dull studies of laboratories, things to be afraid of, or resources to mass produce for food. In reality, we still know very little about them and there is meaning only captured by artists out there among them all. A world of dignity, love, community, clean air, water, and a rich weaving garden of life is possible, yet we must be willing to reach out with authenticity and be prepared for great sacrifice. I'm not there yet, but I hope we can all get there. Life and all its complex relationships are sacred; whenever nihilism creeps in, we must remember this is a product of our collective construction of the world but not the actual world itself. I think it was Nietzsche who pointed out even at his time the Western cultural trend toward nihilism; this has now expanded beyond the West through global markets and consumerism I believe. In the depths of despair, the seeds of a new way are just stratified waiting for energy to germinate and burst forth.

It's a euphoric sort of loneliness. Like I'm a lost kid, lost, no parents, no friends, no one who I can identify. There's practically no one around. I wish I could find someone, anyone, but at the same time I feel so safe and comfortable. Like no one can hurt me. But I have no one.

So i fell asleep listening to this, and track 8 triggered this super vivid dream where I was home, in my car mindlessly driving nowhere with no place in mind. I think about how I could drive anywhere I wanted, go anywhere I desire. Then I make a pitstop at some random vinyl store in Texas. I walk inside the store and start looking at some merchandise. In the back of the store I saw a couch with a sign that says “rest here” so I lay down on the couch staring at the ceiling. As i’m staring at the ceiling, a lady walks next to me with menus on her hands. She tells me that she works there and that what she’s holding is a catalog to everything in the store. She makes a joke about how I look like a nerdy asian kid. I laugh and explain to her i’m actually hispanic. She laughs and says “I know. I’m native american” and i’m like “oh really, i’m part native” she starts asking me about my ancestry and I explain to her about my family lineage about a long lost relationship we used to have with the native people of Honduras. All of the sudden a face of an old man starts appearing in the background and he says “we all live inside a dream” and then the lady starts saying she’s having visions of me. She starts speaking in an indecipherable way and as she’s speaking i’m having visions of her pasts. This portion of the dream felt super intense, as if I was having some massive revelation. Like the tension you feel at the climax of a really good thriller movie. She’s lying in bed with her mother, they’re in a bunk bed at the top bunk. Across from them is a Christmas tree. Below, the bottom bunk has been replaced with a recreation of the birth of Christ. All of the sudden, the figure of Mary comes alive with and starts panicking and crying because her baby is gone. The other figures come alive and start scrambling looking for Christ. The girl and her mother are watching all this unfolding and I feel a deep sadness as i’m having this vision of her past. She then starts telling me how i’m a dreamer, and the dreams I have are beautiful. Some golden light starts eminating from her eyes, almost as if her soul was being absorbed from her body while having these visions. She gasps and says “Wow….” before all of the sudden i’m teleported to a cliff overlooking the mountains in Colorado. As i’m looking down I see two different paths, something inside me tells me that I have to choose one to forever change my life and see the truth or stay on the cliff to live in ignorant bliss surrounded by the beautiful views forever. I then see the girl from earlier walking on the left path. I climb down the cliff to follow her down the trail, but before I could see where it lead I woke up. Thanks track 8.

Man, this album has really grown on me. I didn't like it at first, because it kept jamming itself into my recommendations, autoplaying multiple times a day... Now, I listen to it all the time.. In the backgrounds, in chill times, going to sleep... Just pleasant.

This music somehow transports me back to late nights in the late 90's/early 2000's as a kid staying up watching shows, movies and playing games. Maybe it's pure nostalgia but there was something intangible yet magical about that time.

Oh, this is so good. I accidentally clicked on this and I was blown away. It reminded me a lot of my childhood in the early 2000s, probably because of the similar sounds.
    Thank you.
