I am literally using these videos as medicine for my COVID-lockdown depression. Something about the crunchiness of these bass lines helps restore my balance
In case you guys can't figure out what's so special about this video, it's the fact that she CREATED THIS BASS LINE, then added a ton of clever "fills" (the things she plays between her bass line) that makes this video and this song pop. It's the ultimate combination of Jazz, Pop and Funk, and I daresay no one could have done it better. No one.
That - is what is considered an artist. Naturally created and given to the masses to marvel at. Hard work and great results. She deserves every bit of kudos for being that solid and simply understanding how to be part of the groove vs overplay or clutter. Smooth ride then paint it with busy then back to the groove. Just awesome. Happy holidays kid.

This shiznit is off the hook. I was a Bootsy Funketeer growing up and dabbled playing some bass mostly Bootsy and Parliament funk but I was NOWHERE close to this level of musicianship. This girl is a real artist with many hours under her belt. Her runs and fill ins are effortless which is hands down the sign of the serious level of her commitment. I applaud you with a standing ovation.
Titanic rising // Depression makes me forget about my instruments. I forgot that I had a guitar for three months and just sat in my room and did drugs. It got to be pretty bad and I was sort of forced to stop, but when I picked up my guitar again, playing it became the only thing that made me feel high like that. You can see it in this video too, where she’s not pressured to think about anything deeply, she’s just playing and enjoying- smiling without meaning to. That’s how playing music makes me feel too, and I hope it can bring you the same joy, Peter!
OK, further to my previous comment I have now learned every note and lick of this incredible performance. (I can play it at about 75% of the speed, lol, but I'l get there...) There's so much in here - I'm having to look at my slap technique again, trills and vibrato, note length, right hand finger alternation and muting, the whole package. I'll write out a proper transcription in a bit, but I again just wanted to say this is one heck of a performance to learn. I'd be interested to know if you composed this or just played it. Either way, this is truly outstanding. Well done Julia! Keep going.
juliaplaysgroove Fantastic. I really like your line composition, phrasing, pentatonic language, and knowledge of minor harmony. It’s why, for some reason, I just felt I had to transcribe it. I think I’ll transcribe some of your other videos too. Keep doing what you do.

That and her 'Stank' face on other videos.
@@stewiepid4385 She got more than can come out the bass, It gots to come out somewhere. :)
You're killin' it girl! As a professional saxophonist, I really appreciate the attention to articulation, every fill that was musical as well as its execution, and the unwavering precision of your internal pulse. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
My dad was a studio bassist in Nashville many years ago. I grew up listening to Jamerson tracks he would play me. You have that groove. My pops is tapping his foot in heaven. Good luck with your music career!
I’ve never played bass and I’m shit at guitar so I wouldn’t be the best judge, but goddamn if it doesn’t look like you’re having the time of your life. I love the feeling I get when I’m playing a hard riff and just having fun, and you really let that show through your expression and playing.
I’m fascinated by the fact she NEVER talks. Guess she’s letting her playing speak 4 itself! Very talented. You’re gonna last a very long time.
I agree. No talking. No merch. No patreon. Just straight up talent
Julia lets her fingers do the talking and she doesn't ask for likes or subscribers.
Her facial expression says a lot tho
2:57 the part where the bass goes super dreamy right after the glide, oooofff 😍 what a kick-ass cover.
love it when she hits them breaks and smiles..... that's love for music right there.
I barely comment, but that slick move at 2:40 needs more attention and deserves more respect. OOOOH THAT WAS SO GOOD.
After watching this cover im 100% convinced in 10 years time you will be a world renowned player and I'll be looking back remembering this moment.
I am literally using these videos as medicine for my COVID-lockdown depression. Something about the crunchiness of these bass lines helps restore my balance
This is actually unbelievable been following her for a while but this is my favorite cover
I keep coming back to listen to this over and over again. Such a great cover and I love her enthusiasm when she nails the riffs and bass drop.
throwing this in my “reasons to live” playlist
In case you guys can't figure out what's so special about this video, it's the fact that she CREATED THIS BASS LINE, then added a ton of clever "fills" (the things she plays between her bass line) that makes this video and this song pop. It's the ultimate combination of Jazz, Pop and Funk, and I daresay no one could have done it better. No one.
I've probably commented on this video already but I swear this is the most fun I've had watching anything on the internet, maybe ever.
sameee
It’s ridiculous how many times I’ve listened to this!
This girl is BY FAR the most incredible bassist I have ever seen
The funk is strong with this one - Yoda
I don’t even like this song and you made me change my mind
I fell in love
And then she started slapping
Davie504 approves
I was thinking the same thing!....I slapped like...
Out of context, your comment sounds like an abusive relationship.

the harmonics are IMMACULATE 😌❤️
I just made a tab video for this if anyone's interested: ua-cam.com/video/J9gSg6XXlEg/v-deo.html
It's cliche but I had to comment just to say this video single handedly convinced me to learn bass, it's only been a couple weeks but i'm so glad that I made the leap. One day i'll play this song.
Me too!!! I always wanted to play and her fire made me want to start learning. If I can reach this level of awesome, even if it takes till im 80... I can die happy. Im so excited! Thanks Julia :)
Y’all we got this!! Beginner bassists rise up :)
How's it going man?
Its been 3 months how you doing now
Good for you. Congrats 👍🏾😃
That slide at approximately 2:38 was absolutely insane. Way to go!! You're insanely good!! I hope you get to working with music, for everyone's sake!!
I revisit this video like once a month... so good
PETITION FOR A HARRY STYLES, LIZZO, AND THIS GIRL JUICE STAGE
Macy K YES
Why Harry styles tho?
@@patric3766 cause he performed it with lizzo and it was amazing
Where do I sign?
HELL YEEEESSSS
I didn't think I'd ever have a favorite bassist over flea. You rock Julia
Your playing is just on a different league, the amount of times I just get a shiver watching you play and nail the rhythm is amazing. Well done!
I don't like lizzo's music, but this. This is gold. I love this. Makes me want top pick up bass again.
I take it back, I can't stop watching this now.
Why would you ever put down a bass?
Pick it up Peter!!
@@Hannah-nh5qj very happy for you, glad you could come out the darker places. :)
Your smile makes my heart smile!

OK, further to my previous comment I have now learned every note and lick of this incredible performance. (I can play it at about 75% of the speed, lol, but I'l get there...)
There's so much in here - I'm having to look at my slap technique again, trills and vibrato, note length, right hand finger alternation and muting, the whole package. I'll write out a proper transcription in a bit, but I again just wanted to say this is one heck of a performance to learn.
I'd be interested to know if you composed this or just played it. Either way, this is truly outstanding. Well done Julia! Keep going.
Thanks! I had everything thought out before recording.
juliaplaysgroove Fantastic. I really like your line composition, phrasing, pentatonic language, and knowledge of minor harmony. It’s why, for some reason, I just felt I had to transcribe it.
I think I’ll transcribe some of your other videos too. Keep doing what you do.
@@juliaplaysgroove Thank goodness! If you had come up with all of that on the spot, that would simply be outside the range of human!
Right now there are bassists all over the world, like the original commenter and myself too, in the woodshed with your videos learning from you and becoming better bassists for it. Thank you for taking the time to compose these lines, record them, and post them to UA-cam. Each new video you make is a gift to bassists everywhere.
@@SuperFunkyPete transcribing is an excellent way of understanding what a composer/performer is doing and i'm sure that's primarily why you do it, but know that there's already a transcription out there by DarthMart ua-cam.com/video/J9gSg6XXlEg/v-deo.html i think it's good? i haven't tried it yet. It looks good :P
@@milu3779 Sorry for the delay in replying. I haven't looked at the transcription in detail but it looks good. Nice link. I'm mixed now on whether I bother writing it all out or not. I'd rather spend my time learning the bits I have trouble with! lol. This week I'm sitting down to really work on the vibrato used in this piece. My pinky just does not like doing those quick slides up and down, and it needs to learn.
This is actually the bass line the song wishes it had
This is exactly what I said. Julia is as good as, if not better than, many of the world's greatest bass legends, including Larry Graham and Marcus Miller. She's today's Face of The Electric Bass and I'm loving it!!!!
Musicman needs to give her a endorsement deal.
Markbass or Ampeg could at least throw her a cabinet
at least sterling by musicman. She deserves a free ray34
Not to say I don't like the idea of nice gear in her hands, but I think she has her tone, style, and whole production dialed. She's playing for herself and not a touring stage gig or record deal or even covering a live drummer's volume in a garage.
She doesn't need anything she hasn't asked for. At age 19 she is probably able to buy what she wants. In her UA-cam vid presentation, she hasn't asked for fame, followers, patreon donations, conversation, likes, nothing. Julia plays groove.
@@carpediemarts705
Cool.
For all we know she's a dedicated trainee doctor, or whatever.
This may be just a hobby to her.
Maybe why she doesn't upgrade the bass.
@@bryanleigh6497 a private person with sudden fame in the least polite of venues, she doesn't need to explain anything.
Funk will NEVER die , makes me feels good to see a young lady who appreciate a great funky baseline and has the talent to play them. Keep on groovin Julia you are doing fantastic !!!! PS: the ghost notes are funkadeliciously yummy :) SUBSCRIPTION IS MANDATORY PEOPLE
What the what.....???? Girlllll you are truly gifted and blessed with the natural soul vibes that moves every fiber of your being. I hope you are discovered soon.
I love seeing you smile when you play a part of the riff you love. Keep killing it.
1:33 that smile after that lick 😏
I thought the same thing. She nailed that vamp part and was so happy with it.
i am in love
The bass adds so much character
COME ON!!!! That was so freaking awesome!!! I couldn't stop smiling, you are so talented, man, that was so cool!!
Who the heck even thinks to layer Lizzo with Harmonics!? 🤯 Artist on another level, at one with the instrument and groove. Thank you!
Would not have ever given this song a chance but this bass line kills. Great job!
Oh. My. Goodness. I can't seem to stop watching this girl's videos and she just keeps killing it...
I’ve watched this so many times I will never get tired of it
im studying this version for almost a month now and still impressed with how incredible this is
Honestly phenomenal. If I was still motivationally driven as I used to, you would of been a huge influence on me picking up bass. I’ve been around music for most my life but bass has always been such a amazing thing to me. I started awhile ago learning and getting my hands down, but I stopped. You rock! Keep posting because these are awesome.
I'm such a newbie with the guitar... And recently I enjoy a lot playing bass pieces with the boldest strings, you really lifted me up and gave me motivation to try harder improving my skills, thank you, you're amazing
Your videos are so much fun to watch. I don't even like this artist but watched because of you and it was awesome. Keep crushing it on the bass, young lady! I hope you do even more great things in music.
Honestly, I can’t get enough of this video. She is So. Damn. Good. I have stopped listening to the original because I find it lacking. This is the bass line the original song WISHES it had.
Bravo! 👏🏾 👏🏾👏🏾
