Drew: "Lifestock, like cattle, sheep, pig and horse. There's grains, there's the honeybee, sugar cane, uh, don't forget about horses, is that included on here?" This was from 7:01 to 7:06 🤣
The population projections just take the current birth rate and assume it stays more or less the same for the rest of the century. That’s not realistic at all, as the population changes the effects of it on everyday life change how many kids people have. For instance I’m sure once population falls a bit in Japan and China and as a consequence the cost of life becomes lower people will have more children. On the other hand I seriously cannot imagine Egypt doubling in population, the Nile region is already extremely densely populated where would the extra people live? In the desert? Not only that but Egypt already consumes more food than it produces and often has trouble getting the currency needed for imports since it imports more than it exports. The same goes for other countries who are projected to skyrocket in population too.
I don't think that's how it works, though (at least in regards to China.) China, for example, has over 40 million more men than women *already*. Not only that, but a huge slice of that population is elderly as well. There is going to be a catastrophic drop in people, and that's not going to somehow make the cost of living so cheap that the population is just going to bounce back. Less people means less workers, which means - in China's case - economic collapse. The population is getting too old and keeping old people alive is expensive. There aren't going to be enough young people to support the elderly, and when the elderly are gone this problem will only repeat - at least for the next few generations. Not only that, but China isn't going to be able to remain self-sufficient in terms of food production for much longer. And as China's economy goes off a cliff (as it most likely will), they aren't going to be able to keep up the necessary food imports required to keep such a large population going. I don't think that the chart is that inaccurate. The country won't be able to sustain the amount of people it currently has for much longer. If there is a population ceiling, China has certainly hit it. I can't imagine those population projections are that off. Maybe by a hundred million at most? But even then the Chinese population will have fallen by about 50%.
Another problem someone clued me into is the African numbers don't account for child mortality. Brutal and sad but true. This is just based on birth rates.
That's the danger of projecting current trends out at an unchanged rate. Like if you look at the sales figures of six-foot-tall pine trees in December, and if things keep going at that same rate, then everybody's going to have like a dozen Christmas trees in their house by May.
Yeah. Africa can’t have that much higher population. That’s ridiculous. Absolutely no African country has enough food production to grow in population a lot except for Zambia. Africa can’t go over 2 billion. Also you underestimate how many people can fit in small areas. The Nile basin can literally fit hundreds of millions of people. But it just dont have enough resources to support a much larger population.

Angola currently has 35 million people, by 2100 it's predicted to be 150 million, there is absolutety no way that will happen. where will they get their food from? the country is desertifying as we speak. if I was in Angola, I'd be getting out of there ASAP, I'm not sticking around for that.
