Fun fact: in estonian history we have a time period of 1561-1710 called the swedish golden age. Swedes were nicer towards estonians than any other colonizer before or since.
As an a person who has no traces back to Estonia at all, Estonia is clearly superior to to the pesky swedes becouse 1. It’s Estonia 2. they got a nice flag (I like the shade of blue they used: 3. Idk
@@eniascika3050 As a swede, I kindly disagree with your opinion, but I fully respect it (and you) and thought it was nice that you shared it! It would look amazing!
You are correct in saying that Sweden was independent earlier, from the 9th century to 1397 But let us be clear, Sweden didn't cease to exist when the Kalmar union was created, and no Denmark did not occupy Sweden. The situation was that the Kings where rightfully kings of Norway, Sweden and Denmark equally. Denmark was no more independent than Norway or Sweden, they were ruled the same way.
@@Aoderic It's like people are assuming that all monarchs elected to lead the Kalmar Union were Danish kings when the first king after the unions founding was a Swedish king named Eric of Pomerania.
@@ZechariahSinger Exactly, and they where more German than Danish. The three first were born in Germany, and even after they started being born in Denmark, they still spoke mostly German and leaned Danish as a second language. They married Germans and their court and administration were mostly Germans. Often their armies were mostly German mercenaries.
Can ad that the attack on Fort Casimir (Fort Trinity) in spring 1664 was successful (and a bit lucky that the Dutch had barely no soliders left in the fort since the Swedish colony was dying out). But sure the Dutch came just a bit of a year after in september 1665 and took the full colony (the Swedish settlers could have gambled but they was allowed to stay and even the next boat of settlers too). And the Dutch only got the keep it for 9 more years though, already in 1664 they lost it to the British.
A question is what would have happen if Tsar Peter was defeated in the Great Northern War (it is far from impossible, Charles XII could have made peace with August and gone for Peter)? Especially if it would led to a break-up on Muoscovy e.g. Pskov and Novogorod becomes Swedish protectorate merchant republics (and e.g. Karelia becomes a Grand Dutchy).
The Battle of Narva meant Sweden at that time could continue fight actively agaisnt Russia (The army was big but backwater), But Karl XII went towards Polandd-Lithuania instead. Giving the Russian B'stards time to reform their army.
If I recall, Sweden and Denmark have declared like 40 different wars on each other. After the heat death of the universe, there will still be a Swede and a Dane arguing about something.
One thing is that Sweden was also a big part of WW2 start of the war Sweden sold iron to both sides and later only to Germany with about 40% of there iron was from Sweden and also giving information to the allies
Good quality video, but your map of Sweden’s territories are wrong. Sweden only held Trondheim for two years following the peace of Roskilde between 1658-1660. Yet you show Sweden owning it all the way up until the 19th century. Good quality video, but show a bit more care for the details less you will get more negative comments! Keep up the work.

0:48 What's a seemingly minor footnote to history had major ramifications on Native Americans in Pennsylvania. The Swedes used the Susquehannocks in their proxy war against the Dutch in New York - resulting in the poor Susquehannocks being completely wiped out
Sweden and Denmark did hate eachother toughout most of history however they did also share a lot of culture, history and ethnisity, in reality they where both very similar. Which is why they where both in the Kalmar union prevoiusly, However the Kalmar union was soley ruled by the Danish elite and they oppresed both the Sweds and Norwegians which is why Sweden rebled in the first place. If someone could have just united the two contries and then treated them both equally then they all likely would have gotten along since both sides where essantially the same people cultrally and ethnically.
The real answer to this question is no. Sweden's colonial period was more fashion of the time than a realistic ambition of Sweden. Sweden never became an Empire. This is called the Great Era of Power. You need an Emperor for an Empire. Gustav Adolf thought about it, but that was as far as it went. The Swedish population was too small.
I love these vids but today Sweden and Denmark love each other sweden and Norway are kinda like they hate each other and love each other in The same time
Sweden once again became an independent kingdom and should we be completly honest the danish king in Köpenhamn didn't have that much power in Sweden nor in Norway. Norway wanted to break free as much as Sweden. What is today St Petersburg was once the Medival swedish city of Landskrona and later Nyen. The Ducthman that established the Dutch colony also estabished the swedish colony of Nya Sverige. 2:16 No one in Sweden wanted Norway. The very reason Jean Baptist Bernadotte was elected was to retake Finland. 2:21 The Idea of Sweden being neutral country was established with the Great war. Sweden were to join into the Crimean war to retake Finland. And Great Britain and France wanted to open a new front against Russia. 2:43 If ypu look at the population growth in the 18th century Swedens population grew quickly.

Great video! But to be clear, Sweden only had that middle-part of Norway for 2 years (1658-1660)
awsome video!

Why the kalmar union on the thumbnail? Now that Denmark was the country to make the union.
America (almost) belong to Sweden!

A single snapshot in history.
Sweden was a neutral country in precisely 212 years, from WWI (1812) up until this year (2024), when it joined NATO.
It's a big mistake
