Nice video Nick. American Shad fishing is off the hook this year. I fished American Shad upstream from Hagan Park on the American River in Sacramento with barbless hooks so its a little more challenging to land them. Good stuff. Tight lines!

The problem with that rag is it takes some of the protective slime coat right off them. That's a great way to kill a fish.
As a rule, the more slippery the species, the more likely it is that they need that slime. It's part of their immune system, helping protect their skin and flesh from water borne fungal and bacterial infections.
So hopefully they bred before or shortly after they were caught. I'm willing to bet that a quarter of them are gonna be in rough shape. White spot, bloat, no telling really.

    Show makers.
Stopt LOOKING ones I see how you damaging that fish and letting it go on video.
I have little idea for you show makers, instead of letting it go give it to poor people who would say thank you for you and fish would not die for nothing because of your showing how to CATCH it and making money off of your shows.
