- Jesus tells us that as his followers, we must show mercy to others just as our heavenly Father shows mercy to us. But how can we do that if we don’t understand what mercy is? In this first video in The Essentials of Divine Mercy series, Father Chris Alar gives an introduction to Divine Mercy, explaining how mercy is even greater than forgiveness, and why Divine Mercy is mankind’s greatest hope for salvation.

Father Chris Alar, MIC, is a priest with the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Fr. Chris wrote and produced the popular “Divine Mercy 101” DVD and is the author of the soon-to-be released book After Suicide: There is Still Hope for Them and You. He is an international speaker and a regular host and guest on EWTN. He also hosts the online “Divine Mercy Matters” series at DivineMercyMatters.org. Currently he serves as “Fr. I’m a Protestant, regardless I love this video and how this priest explains mercy. Though Catholics and Protestants don’t see eye to eye on everything I love my brothers and sisters in Christ who are Catholic. Once again, loved this video!

I love this! I used to think Catholicism was so morbid and focused on how awful we as humans are. My mind started to change about this when I began watching lizziesanswers here on UA-cam. In one of her videos she addressed how the idea of "mercy" in the church is different than what the regular world thinks of it. We have been programmed to associate the word "mercy" with someone threatening to kill/torture us and us in turn begging them not to do it, i.e. "HAVE MERCY!!!!" Lizzie explained that the greek word for mercy actually is the same word for olive oil (if this is incorrect, please do let me know!) and that in ancient times olive oil was used as a healing salve in medicine. So in mass when we say "have mercy," it has nothing to do with God's "wrath," but rather it's more like saying "heal us from our pain and struggles." I think that is so beautiful and I wish I had known it sooner. The analogy you gave in this video is wonderful.

Wow! This was touching. I'm Protestant and was searching online for more information on mercy. This explanation almost brought me to tears. And the idea that mercy is forgiveness in action gives me a good understanding of what Matthew 5:7 is calling believers to do. Thank you for sharing.

I heard someone once said about someone who hurted them "if that person went to heaven I don't want to go to heaven" and I think they said they forgave them but they still were in pain because of that person. when I heard that story I felt their pain because I'm in the same situation and I was saying I forgave them too. At that moment I said to myself how would I feel if I see that person in heaven immediately I felt pain and anger in my heart that is when I realized the deference between forgiveness and mercy and I'm still working on it but now I'm trying to have mercy on them the pain is so bad sometimes I cry but I'm fighting with myself. To make it easy I tell myself that there is no pain no hatred no suffering in heaven so I will not be sad if I see them there so it's better not only to forgive them but also to have mercy on them. It's NOT easy but I'm trying

What a great explanation of the mercy of God.
Unfortunately we did not have God's mercy on July 19, 2018 when my daughter's 6yr old daughter was drowned. Because of 2 irresponsible 25 yr olds, my beautiful granddaughter died. One of the 25 yr olds was her cousin, my grandson. Aliyah's parents, her sister and brother are destroyed. This has pushed them further away from God. It has been 9 months of deep sorrow and pain. We have been praying but it is difficult not to ask why and not to keep asking God to please bring her back.

I have a friend of mine, God bless her though, that has not made the best of choices. I still love her to death, because I remember her specifically telling me, that she wants unconditional love. She was raised not even knowing who her father is, by a mother with mental problems, and one of her stepfathers committed suicide, and although I've definitely have my spats with her, I'm actually very glad she's my friend, because I believe that if you give Mercy, you get Mercy. She was a self-harmer for a little while, and that is something that I recovered from, I'm 31, the last time I cut myself I was 18 , and I remember talking to her about it, and instead of yelling at her or scolding her, I asked her the one question that we need to ask the people that we love when they do something that harms others or ourselves, and that question is "why"? I still think she makes some terrible decisions, and I will tell her as such, but I will never judge the state of her soul, because there are some things she may not be culpable of. I wish I could phrase more eloquently, but I hope I've made my point.

I went to goverment office and this mean woman treated me so bad and with arrogance she didnt grant me my car plates. but she made a mistake and gave me 100 dollars back. I went back and someone else gave me my plates. mean woman came by and acused me of taking 100 dollar. I made a point it was her fault and her boss said pay from ur own money...
I went to atm and gave her 100 buck. I repaid her good for evil when i didnt have to. I had mercy on her.
And prayed to soften her heart.
Mercy, what if that same criminal recommits murder by horrible means repeatedly once he leaves prison, when does Cesar step in? What does it take, how many must die. Mercy is fine for the repentant .
Gods Mercy is when HE Gives each and every person..that which HE knows they Need. Our Mercy is when we refrain from judging another person..because we do not know what they need.
