  • I have always been fascinated by the Bishnupur temples in the Bankura district of West Bengal, which bear testimony to the state's indigenously developed unique temple architecture - mostly in terracotta . Visited the temple town twice - in February 2015 and in December 2020. Almost all the temples have intricate terracotta work depicting the plots/incidents/characters from our Hindu epics - Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Most of the temples in Bishnupur are dedicated to Lord Krishna. Such temples were built by the malla kings during a period when Vaishnavism swept the region and the royals wanted to honour Krishna (form of Vishnu). What ensued was a series of temples with elaborate artwork, which were constructed for housing and worshipping Krishna and his friend/consort Radha.
All the historical monuments of importance in Bishnupur are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. 'Madan Mohan' temple still sees a regular stream of devotees pouring in for deity worship.
The description of Madan Mohan temple and the story of its deity, has been taken mostly (verbatim) from an article written by Rita Ghosh, published in "Adyapeeth Matripuja" Sharadiya shankha (October 2022); Bengali year: 1429. Pg: 183-186.
