As always, I enjoy your films. It’s worth considering that the focus on hillforts as defences is quite old fashioned . Most archaeologists recognise that the lack of water and the sheer scale of some of the enclosed areas make them very hard to defend. The ancients had strong interest in boundaries and the demarcation of space. Maybe centres for gathering, ritual and trade? I’m going to have to read more about Woden Law. There were those who felt Burnswark was also a training site for Roman military use, this has been discredited. It’s also worth noting that “hillforts” were being built for centuries before Rome came to Scotland and probably centuries after.
Derek Taylor yes that view is quite common now. Eildon hill North for example is thought to have been a site of ritual more than residence. The Scottish Borders has more hill forts than any other area in the UK and I sometimes think they were a show of wealth and stature among families / clans / tribes. It’s when you are out in the field you can usually tell straight away the ones which were built in a defensive capacity, the Rink Fort near Galashiels for example is just shouting out power, strength, keep out.
I mind biding at towford centre, when I was at morebattle primary, we seen the marks on the hill. Was their a Roman' signal station connecting Rubers law the Eildons the Craik, Linton hill ,berwick harbour ,Soutra I never seen one.? Another brawl video son keep up the guid work!
I was in Scotland in '73 and '74, living in Falkirk and Linlithgow. My friend showed me the "mounds" of the Antonine Wall running through the area, Callander and Bo'Ness. I didn't understand it then but thanks to your aerial shots I now have a better appreciation for what I was seeing. Thanks so much!
Super Mark. Must go for a look once the weather is more favourable for photography. Speaking of forts, what do you know about Bell's Hill fort near Lindean loch? I can't find anything about it.
Mark Nicol, Bells hill fort. I've biked through that a couple of times, all I know is that it was an iron age fort. not huge but the defensive banks are still easily visible today. if you find anything else let me know too. Worth a visit 😉
It's a wee bit WSW of the loch towards the Selkirk St Boswells road. Easy spotted on Google Earth or the OS map. Nothing spectacular but worth looking at.
Hallo Mark Nicol, I liked your video, but felt it could have been somewhat better. I guess that you are naturally a fairly intense and serious person, passionate about the subjects that interest you. You have clearly made an effort to express this passion in order to enthuse your audience. However, as a presenter, you would do well to adopt a more relaxed attitude that conveys interest rather than tension, (even stress!) Gas mark 4, not 6! Have music or commentary, but never comment over the music! (This error is ubiquitous on UA-cam, and extremely annoying. I had to replay some of your video before I could work out what you were saying.) Please do not show anything that is of purely personal interest. A distant wide angle shot that includes your car helps to give an impression of scale, but why zoom in on your car and comment on it?! (This loses the perspective and is of no interest.) I felt that you had planned the video well, and I appreciated the fact that you suggested early on that the purpose of the hill fort during the Roman occupation was an issue, and only revealed the answer near the end of the video. Posing a puzzle and hinting that you will reveal the solution later is an excellent technique to keep people watching! Overall, I thought this was a very good effort indeed, that sadly missed out on excellence. Well done, nevertheless, and thank you so much for having the get-up-and-go to make it!

The Saxon Kingdom of Bernicia and Bernicia/Deira (Northumbria as it became known) extended as far as the Forth at its largest extent. This site almost certainly was part of that Kingdom so you are probably correct in your assumption.

just a note..perhaps the title of the video should read, the roman's in scotlands' border ... side note reason; .i have just been having a conversation with a fb friend , as to the scottish word, and i just noticed it right away mark, we are discussing free masonry, and i remember you said how the royalty changed the names of the places ie into shires and what not...who did the king/head take advice from etc?...cos i don't think kings are wizards and they took council ofcourse to carry out their policies...just like today ...words are spells , for spelling haha

I assume that the name Woden was given to the hill later, by the anglo saxons.
Mostly Nature actually don't know where the name came from. Wednesday was named after Wodin too, don't know if there is a connection there?
