I recently sprayed my cushions with Duplicolor vinyl spray paint. Cleaned them really well beforehand and scuffed them lightly with 220. Cleaned again with acetone and then did multiple light coats. They look great and it has been probably 6 months so far and they're holding up well.
Mean Green Mildew Destroyer works like magic to get rid of that black mold inside storage compartments and under the console. Also works well diluted 50/50 on vinyl cushions - diluting it and rinsing thoroughly after a few minutes helps to avoid damaging the cushion stitching.
For the cushions and seats use some Wet And Forget. I mix it up and use a small sprayer. It works over time but doesn’t seem to be too harsh on the upholstery.
Rust oleum vinyl spray paint works very well to make cushions look new again. I’m not sure on how long it will last with heavy use, but one of my boats, now my nephew’s boat, is going on 4 years and still looks good with light use.
I've always used Spray-Nine. Black mold in compartments on boats is probably one of the most hated things about boat ownership. Then and oxidation on the gelcoat. :)
If you have it looking like in the clip after cleaning. 1 Mask up the area to stop over spray. 2 use a can of vinyl spray. 3 apply your moisturiser & uv protector. Nb I’m in Australia and use a vinyl product called SEM from Veriety Paints and more in Wangara Western Australia. I’m sure you can buy it in the USA.
Whoa, never knew there was such a thing lol thank you! Looks like an outstanding product, I'll have to get some a try it out! :) Found some SEM Marine on Amazon
Man I found a product called Miracle Mist. Best mold product I’ve found… highly recommend it before spending money on other products. Got all the stains all other products didn’t.
To get rid of mold like that I was told by an old boater, skipper, years ago, white vinegar and water more vinegar than water, about 25% water and the rest white Vinegar, don't use the other vinegar as it could cause staining, also try it on a concealed section and make sure it is a small area, I have not tried it my self and do not know what it may do to modern material's. Jim from Scotland.
Hey guys , a brush with bleach works good in tight places . A good paint respirator will keep you from choking to death. Also I find that if you wet the threading before bleaching the upholstery it helps save them. Keep up the good work..
I worked at a paper recycling plant and made into pulp sheets each stack weighing at 2 ton but mold would take over after sitting wet for about a week, we used bleach to make them look new again yet after 3 days it always begin to come back again. Hope this does not happen here. Great video
Try looking up Upholstery Brush from Chemical Guys, use that on a drill, some vinyl cleaner or soapy water and that'll take that right out. I did that on my cushions on my 92 Seaswirl and they came out great!
Yeah, you always gotta wax after using the harsh chemicals on the boat :) rust remover, muriatic acid, toilet bowl cleaner, bleach. A lot of people forget how porous gel coat is and without wax it gets dirty quick! lol
I've found some mildew cleaners work better on certain types of mildew than other types of mildew, you might have to try different products. Bleach-based products seem to work on the widest spectrum. Many of these take hours to work their magic so follow directions.
I use the following from Amazon... RMR-86 Instant Mold and Mildew Stain Remover Spray - Scrub Free Formula. Best I have seen on mildew... Not perfect but very effective.
The mildew ate through the vinal, that's why it's deteriorated so much, it's in the cushion itself. Unfortunately the mildew will continue to return as the roots are deep inside at this point. My 78 bowrider has the same issue, the seats aren't as bad but the cover unfortunately had to go. It would need to be deep cleaned twice if not 3 times a season just to look okay... just said screw it and bought a new bimini
Another thing you all could try is what do the professionals do, check out the restoring channels for really old car seats, might find the answer to a lot of problems. Jim from Scotland. good luck, my Fairline Vixen was well looked after so I do not have so many problems with material, but a forty year old girl just needs a lot of TLC and new parts. 🤣🤣🤣Jim from Scotland.
The areas on the cushions that are rough are due to the mold. Like a roof or any item, mold attacks a surface and destroys it. That’s why you do not allow mold to grow, clean regularly.
Bleach does the trick! I prefer to brush it on to avoid bresthing the mist.Still harsh on resperation.Viewing on Westcoast Vancouver island in Canada ! CHEERS from HERE!!! P.S.Vinegar works too but more mild .
Aaron, love your extremely helpful videos and podcasts. I would like your opinion on my 1987 Evinrude 88hp V4 crossflow (freshwater use). I was doing my annual maintenance and replacing my spark plugs. I am using champion QL77JC4. My manual states that the spark plug gap should be set at .040. I read on the web that Evinrude changed their recommended spark plug gap for my engine in the early 90s to .030 to make plugs last longer. That seems like a big difference to me. I am thinking I will split the difference and gap my new plugs to .035. What is your opinion? Thank you.
I just looked at an Evinrude & Johnson Outboard Spark Plug Application Chart that was revised in 2009, it says: 88, 90, 100, 110, 112, 115HP 1979-1998 will use QL77JC4 or QL82C plugs with a gap of .030" so I'd gap them down to the .030. The plugs must have been losing spark because of the larger gap, or it was messing up the ignition coils because they would need to work harder to jump that larger gap, even more as the plugs wore out :/
Try pool chemicals in a pump up sprayer lol and a mask with goggles. Dang stuff will never come back and we found out the boat had some unwanted bugs. Their gone as well
@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 just the chlorine additive man it works on a fence, I used it to clean up a nasty pontoon. Ps don’t leave it long on upholstery was it off fast. But on a sailboat engine compartment wow and the critters come climbing out.
Gday mate just do the best you can and maybe later if you keep the boat you can get them recovered ,with your climate in florida unless you keep at it this is going to happen .
@@mkivlove1998 it doesn’t take much in Florida to turn it nasty. I’ve looked and haven’t seen videos on how to clean it. I’m sure you’re looking as well and haven’t found much.
Strips off any sealant or protectant, really you always want to treat any material with a protectant after you use a harsh chemical on it, bleach, acid, stain remover, whatever :)
I spent part of last week trying to get mould off lifejackets without much success. I tried vinegar, lemons, and finally bleach, but to no avail. It seems the mould gets into the fabric and it just won't let go. Any suggestions?
I’ve seen better results with Jomax and bleach mixture spray it with water once then the mix of Jomax and bleach two to one then two pts water. Two sprays AND THE miracle appears leaves like it was never there
Wow! It really works! Takes 5 coats on really black parts. My used boat has never looked better inside the enclosed areas.
Thank you soooo much!

Awesome! Thank you for sharing, getting a lot of options in these comments :)
Barbersol shaving cream. Opens the pores of the material and use a 2in chip brush to scrub. Or tooth brush

Great video! Just try a half a lemon on the cushion and rinse. Spray with a UV vinyl protector or 303 after.
Thank you! Nice trick!

Lots of comments on the spray paint, I've never tried it but will definitely have to! Thank you!

RMR-86 is magic if you are able to rinse it off. No scrubbing. Works on cushions without issue.
You can spraypaint the seats after cleaning. Looks like new
How long does the spray paint last on the vinyl?
@@BornAgainBoating long but you hsve to degrease the surface
SEM Vinyl spray paint is amazing. Several light coats after proper prep will do wonders

My 1720 has the same issue in the console. I want to clean up the rats nest of wiring at the same time. Nice job
That’s good. Go to the pressure wash store or contractors. Go to get pressure wash chemicals to pressure wash your house. They’re bleach is 10%

I use toilet bowl cleaner from Dollar Tree to remove mold and mildew. It also works great on hull water stains - it's hell on wax so just beware.

10%pool shock
You should put a coat of armor All when you finish that stuff is amazing
Duplicolor Vinyl and fabric coating? Might be worth a test. Never used it personally.

we have had good luck with 30 second house wash and a brick acid brush
Magic eraser also works fine
Ya, just recover it with new vinyl. That one tiny cushion would take two minutes...
I wonder how well that would work on my jet ski bilge/inside hull. Anyone try this yet?
I need to know as well. Previous owner didn't take care of the boat much and it looks horrible.

What does that bleach due to metal?

Take the cushion off and flip it upside down
White shoe polish will fix it rite up.

I always straining my clothes when cleaning my boat with bleach so wear old clothes not your favorite black ones lol 😂
Lol same here, I had to give up on having favorite black clothes lol
It’ll knock that mold into another decade
Mold armor another go to maybe better
Thank you!
Amazing stuff but toxic - stopped cleaning the shower with it as I’m sure I’m shortening my life…dawn+vinegar instead

Try pool acid in a spray bottle be careful wear ppe and acid gloves.
I ignore the mold if my pressure washer won't remove it, but bleach might work if you let it soak in a few hours instead of washing it right off.
Mold in fabric is a hard thing, like cap said, if the pressure washer won't touch it, and the bleach will stain, try the acid, or forget it lol :)
Try hydrogen peroxide
For the really really bad stuff on cushions that just won’t come out. Marine 31 and a magic eraser.
I’ve seen better results with Jomax and bleach mixture spray it with water once then the mix of Jomax and bleach two to one then two pts water. Two sprays AND THE miracle appears leaves like it was never there
Y’all better rinse that good. Most all those products are extremely corrosive to wiring and skin.
Pool bleach
