    I found trying to find one of these almost impossible and this week, having an urgent need of a pillar drill I bought a Wolf 9 speed one for under £80 which I am more than happy with as it uses a B16 JT arbor meaning I can easily fit ER collet holders and end mill holders which is part of my plan to convert to a light milling machine. At rest there is no play on the quill but it develops a bit of play when extended so I need to address that before I can shape metal. Used it in cold blood today drilling two very precise 0.80mm holes in a very expensive Soviet diver watch, abs flawless action and super pleased with it.

    I have just paid £62 for the PTBMOD 710 B2 model, no digital screen, no problem, key chuck 👍🏻, no chuck plastic screen, the plastic control knobs feel ok for me, my main issue is how the pillar gear works it seem a bit stiff and sticks a bit, with a bit of attention will work fine. The laser cross hairs are are ok so for me for the money and a three year guarantee is pretty good value for money.

    Thanks for this review, very useful. I think I saw these in Lidl for £129 recently. They didn't sell out and hung around for a few weeks. I've never owned a bench drill so considered getting one, but I wouldn't pay that price. Lidl tools are often well priced, so I was surprised about how much they were charging for this. Having watched your review, I'm definitely glad that I didn't get one. Surely there are more affordable models available for hobby use?

    • @tonyf68

      Ah right, the Scheppach DP60 is £280 at Screwfix! But yes, cheaper bench drills are also available.

    • @InTheWorkshop

      £129 is what I paid but personally I think they should be below £100.

      A lot of the cheap PDs get very bad reviews. It's something that warrants a bit of research.
      The Titan (by Screwfix) didn't seem too bad - but that seems to have been withdrawn now.
      The Bosch option looks reasonably viable - particularly with a chuck swap - but at over
      200£ it isn't really a 'budget' option.
      A good quality used model can be a good bet - but they're getting harder to find now, as
      people have come to appreciate the value/quality in the old made-in-England tackle.

    You could solve the slack in the pull down handle with some jb-weld.. Obviously wax the shaft first, unless you never want to get it off of course lol. Lovely vid sir. Thankyou xx

    Guranteed for 3 years. If you got that out of it, its worth £130 knicker. You say it felt cheap and tacky, what exactly was you expecting from parkside? Im just happy it runs alot more true than my last one. Good video and informative. Cheers.

    Thanks for the video, David. I was looking at these (and trying to justify the cost to myself) so this is really timely. I think I'll stick with my old faithful for the time being. No real reason to change it for now - just liked the idea of easily-variable speed and depth control. Saved me a bit of money watching this. I share your reservations about the build quality of some of it. Cheers - take care.

    I bought the Aldi version, you don't need to grip the top part of the chuck to tighten it, just turn the lower part whilst its set to tighten.

    • @InTheWorkshop
      @InTheWorkshop  3 роки тому

      Thanks Mathew I will have to try that, I just followed the included instructions. I see that the Bosch version locks the spindle when turned to the lock position.

      @@InTheWorkshop I made the same mistake also following the instructions. I saw another UA-cam channel (can't remember which one) using the drill and they seemed to change bits far easier than me and then I realised why.

    I bought the DP55 instead because I didnt like the stupid chuck on the DP60 . The key`d chuck is much better in my opinion , little bit more run out but for my use its not a problem .

  • @kwakkers68

    Good review, thanks for taking the time.
    There's a video on here about swapping the chuck on the Bosch comparable PD over - which made a
    significant improvement to its accuracy. I would imagine the same would be possible on this one?
    (It was swapping the OEM Rohm chuck for a higher quality item from the same brand).
    The lowest price I've seen for the Bosch one, so far, is £247*
    (*if you put Bosch PBD40 in the search box, on this platform, it give a list or retailers above -
    a quick, if crude way of throwing up prices/sellers)

    A good review... I think it has lots of gimmicks which are not really needed and as you say the lifespan is questionable. Have a good Easter.

    I think this is similar to the Bosch pillar drill. I did a review of my one on my channel. Have a look and tell me what you think Dave. I think they're very similar. I'm also not a fan of the quick release chuck on this machine. It's much fiddlier than a keyed chuck.

  • @mikefisher9992
    @mikefisher9992 3 роки тому

    It seems to have a lot of gimmicks you would probably never use, the chuck would drive me mad it takes longer than a conventional one. I can’t see it lasting as long as a standard piece of kit in a wood shop, my drill is an old Grimston and must be at least fifty years old. I think this drill may be better suited to a model maker.

    I could hear the disappointment in your voice David, I like some of the features, the digital speed control and depth gauge, but I'm afraid the plastic parts would put me off, looking at it closely it appears they have tried to make it look like a space ship with moulded parts in the shape that don't need to be there and as you say the knobs look cheap. For the price I would expect something a little better. But I am sure you'll find a use for it, door stop on a warm day? :-)
    Keep up the good work, I love watching your videos, I have picked up so many little tips.
