    You deserve UA-cam review of the year! You didn’t tell us where you went to middle school, you didn’t introduce us to your dog... instead you got straight to the point. I especially appreciated @18:00 where you put distance into perspective.
    Video quality sucks though. Many thxs for the review.

    I just purchased this exact same setup from Costco Online. Last Monday night, my truck was broken into and several items stolen. It must have been left unlocked by accident, or the Key FOB was triggered to unlock it by keys or coins in my pocket when I sat down, as there was no vehicle alarm. Our driveway, garage, road, & entrance way is very similar, and my ideas of where to place the cameras is about the same as yours. Our house has very poor visual access from inside the house to the road and driveway, so this will be the best way to protect the vehicles and access to the house. I especially like the "Motion Detection Light" on these cameras as a deterrent to thieves and vandals, but a convenience to ourselves and friends. This will be by FAR the best solution to protect our vehicles, and have the added protection for the house as well. The Police say that there are one or two in the area causing problems, but also a few that come out from town as well. I had my older truck broken into Downtown Twice, and now my new truck Downtown Once and at HOME this last time. It is VERY upsetting to say the least. BRAVO on your video and the very fine coverage of the Software Setup Menus. A few more days and the "TRAP" will be set. Although it MIGHT never be needed, I will feel as if I have done something proactive, and can sleep soundly at night. It would be great if you could play Dirty Harry say...... "Do you feel lucky?....... Well do ya.....?"

    Hello. iPhone user. Did you try to read the license plate from the Lorex Cloud app? select HD quality in the app and zoom in. You will see that you will be able to read it better than on your screen. I have another lorex system and the instructions recommends Lorex Secure app, with that app I can not read a license plate on my iPhone or at my 75” 4k tv at 30 feet. I saw your video using Lorex Cloud app so I decided to try that one and I was blown away by the improvement in image quality. But now I have 2 apps because each one have some features that the others doesn’t have or I haven’t found them yet.

  • @Unixgreybeard
    @Unixgreybeard 5 років тому +3

    Helpful. Would be nice if you said the model # but I am happy I got to see the interface everyone's been complaining about (it looks just fine). BTW you showed a screen that said you had camera firmware updates - that's why there was 5 of them, not just 1 (NVR only has 1 firmware because it's 1 device). Also, if you want to get motion detection sensitivity to be less sensitive, turn the sensitivity down and the threshold UP - if you turn it down, it'll have the opposite effect you're intending. Lastly, turning on continuous bit rate recording and turning your bit rate up might make the picture more clear, but it'll increase your rate of hard drive usage and may slow down your network or frame rate (depending on the total load on the NVR). If you use H.265 instead of H.264 this may counteract some of these effects due to the codec using less bandwidth (newer/better compression algorithm). Basically, always use H.265 if you can (may have to set manually in each camera in addition to NVR - set camera first if this is the case). Good luck and thanks again!

    Great video, I just installed similar cameras by lorex, the volume of the siren is horrible. I don't know why lorex didn't make it so you can adjust the volume of it from the app. It would also be nice to be able to turn off the infrared on individual cameras. Some areas of my yard are very well lit at night and the infrared bounces off the lit area and makes for a poor image. All in all its a great system. Thanks for this video

    best review of this set up so far. Only thing I wish you did was sound the alarm when u were outside. You did it in your house which gave a decent glimpse into what it sounds like. So better than nothing. I would prefer it to be louder. But in the dead of night with no noise around I think it would be enough. The reviews had me worried about the alarm being so quite but this review helped my decide that it is good enough for the price. Thanks!

    I was disappointed with the zoom capabilities as well. Should be noted though that the system is limited to the resolution of the monitor you are using. I tried to up the resolution to max on a 720 monitor and lost the image entirely. Another thing, in my opinion, is that the software isn't really user friendly for the average Joe. Still trying to figure out how to get notifications on my phone. Great and honest review by the way.

      Ya the cameras are nice crisp wide angle cameras but dont do physical camera zoom. They do digital zoom which works for shorter distances but not for images too far away. Lorex does sell some zoom cameras and I would imagine they have the ability to zoom much better.

  • @thetrumanshow4791
    @thetrumanshow4791 5 років тому +4

    Some of the newest Lorex systems and cameras allow for 4K at 30fps and the quality of those 4K cameras are much higher than the ones in this video. (I don't think you will find them at Costco)
    4K at 30fps is AWESOME, but it does fill up a LOT of memory on your hard drives very quickly. 2 hard drives at 8TB each would be desirable.

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  5 років тому +2

      Ya for sure always some tradeoffs. 15 frames vs 30 fps doesnt matter much to me ...15 sounds bad but in reality seems pretty fine. What I would like is a better mix of cameras..a few bullet wide angle and a couple more with zoom capabilities in the packages they sell

  • @BulletSpoung

    I also bought a Lorex 8 camera system from Costco and love it. I did add two optical zoom cameras just for recording cars on our country road and can now see inside the cars and read plates clearly. I did add a HP purple 10TB hard drive so we will have a lot more storage just in case we need to retrieve footage days or weeks later.

    Others have said and I am too, excellent video! I already ordered my system, just watching videos about it - this is the best I've found so far. Nice job!
    Pertaining to smart home ideas, I have a motion detector with a siren hooked to it - you just have to have a way to disable it or it will be like the boy that cried wolf to your neighbors. Subbed

      @RickvanderValk14  5 років тому

      Thats tricky, I find motion detectors handy but they go off a lot for weird reasons, I dont know I would want to pair it with a siren..Maybe a light instead or an email alert so you can check it out?

    • @1AXMRDR
      @1AXMRDR 5 років тому

      @@RickvanderValk14 The siren is dual purpose, it will wake me up if I am sleeping or audio alert to potentially scare off burglar, even if I am not home - unwanted attention. The kids are grown up and living on their own, no pets anymore and the detector is inside the house where false alarms should be minimal. I have other life and home loaded defense tools too, if you know what I mean. TBH I highly doubt that something could happen because of where I live but if it makes the wife more at ease then it needs to be in place. The motion sensor is a pretty high grade unit the detects heat And movement, not just movement alone.

    Hi Rick,OUTSTANDING VIDEO!
    I have been researching a system for months and decide on Lorex because of the software and I think a bit better quality you pay for as well as the many videos and information they provide.
    Even though I have not received the system until tomorrow 11/30/2018 I am super hyped on the wide range of control the software gives you.With many other video reviews and your has been a great help.I'm installing my Lorex 4k 8 channel NVR/System this weekend.Mine has a NVR9082X and 6 LNB8111BW small bullet cameras for my exterior.I wish my NVR would hand those cute little cameras you got with your Costco system by NVR doesn't handle them.
    The only thing I can imagine is that the extra power needed for the light and the siren.
    I also like how you can just place your camera on a table inside.
    My cameras are 4K 8mp cameras and have 4.4 mm fixed lens with a 88 degrees view.
    With 130 ft day and night color, 2TB HD plus able to add 1 more HD (2 x 8TB = 16 TB Total)
    It also seems the software in your box looks the same as I think I will get.I got the whole package for $577 during this past week sale with 25% off..
    I'm happy.www.lorextechnology.com/4k-ip-camera-system/4k-ultra-hd-ip-nvr-security-camera-system-with-6-ip-cameras/4KHDIP86-1-p.Thanks again for a very informative and complete video about your system software setup.
    You have no idea how much help that alone will help everyone planning to install themselves.
    I'm sure I will return soon and watch again.

      I have Lorex Secure and Lorex Cloud on my cellphone.
      Can you please explain what is the purpose of each?
      You can just tell me which is the one you use to get video motion alarms as it seems I get them from both.
      Is that possible or am I just not understanding the purpose of each.

    Great video, but I have a few questions: 1) which Lorex app are you using specifically? 2) Do you have to set up the camera system through the NVR or computer software first, or can you make all of the initial configurations through the app and avoid the NVR or computer all together? 3) Have you noticed if four 4K cameras or 4K live streaming is taxing on your home Wi-Fi? Thanks.

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  5 років тому +1

      Hi John, I setup the Lorex system initially through the actual NVR unit. i connected a monitor to it and made my changes there. Afterwords I went online and the "FlirCloud" application for my windows PC and then went to my app store for my android phone and got the "Lorex Cloud" app. I dont know for certain but my guess is you need to do initial setup on the NVR and then after that you can modify it no problem from the PC app. I have noticed a few differences in terms of features that the PC app doesnt show but most are there. Couple things on the different apps. My computer is hardwired to my router so no issues at all in terms of high quality viewing. The mobile app uses something called sub-streaming where it lowers the 4k resolution from 4k to 1280 bit rate. Still looks great just easier on the bandwidth

    Hi I live in the Arizona in the Southwest desert. Its mostly hot during the year with temps that can reach 118 degrees. Also there is a month of monsoon with torrential downpours which may last for hours and sometimes days. Lastly there will be some incidences of snow up to a foot on occasion. I have a flat roof and I plan on installing my Lorex cameras on the highest points, possibly to a junction box with a mix of 1/2 inch to 1 inch conduit (where the cameras Cat5e cables meet other cables from other cameras). I'm going to lay the conduit on the roof with many 90 degree bends to make the job look as professional as possible. I will use a few junction boxes, some directly on the camera and others where conduit from other cameras meet another section. I have never done this before and I have no plans on drilling any holes other than to the room where the nvr box will be. I'm curious to know what your thoughts and recommendations are?

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  5 років тому

      Not sure if your cameras are covered or not, mine have a roof line to protect them from snow and rain a bit more, the manufacturer shows the range of temperatures on the cameras at -22° ~ 122°F so sounds like your probably ok on that. I have no issues with cold and snow. I think sounds like a pretty good plan overall. Cat5 is pretty flexible and the conduit should be plenty big enough depending on how many cameras. Like to see how it looks when your done.

I do have a question about the smartphone app. I have tenants in my house that I would like to give access to see the camera's but I don't really want to give them access to a lot of features like it looked like you had via the mobile app. Do you know if there are 'profiles' or 'users' that can be set so that some one can just have 'view' access to the camera's?

    To all who have not figured out what numbers to use with their motion sensitivity and Threshold adjustments I just received an email back from Lorex and here is what they say:
    The Sensitivity determines how sensitive the camera is to
    motion.
    The Threshold determines how much motion is required to trigger an event.
    It is recommended to select a Threshold between 10~50 and a Sensitivity between
    30~70.
    Kind of generic but I asked about headlight setting off motion detection and asked what they suggested.So it looks like we will just have to tweak these adjustments a bit and hope over time hit the correct mark for each camera.

I can't test it until tonight but I feel pretty good about this. Please feel free to correct, add, or modify as needed. Hope that helps. Thnks again.

    Thanks for this. I had purchased a Backstreet system/NVR and I am not impressed with the GUI at all. It's terrible for playback searching and installation is a pain since it has only one input requiring you provide switches and a separate router. On top of that the company has nobody that understands networking so you can forget about any help setting it up. I regret having spent 4K on that Backstreet system. FYI you said you can’t help your bald spot; I used to think so too but I got this stuff called Cabooki. They sent me a free trial size and I couldn’t order it fast enough, I have a Zmodo 8 cam POE system. I have a neighbor that is insane and escalated to throwing glass for my rescue dog, and I’m handicapped. I caught him peeping in my windows twice. The glass I clearly got, and those videos are on my channel. I brought it to court for a restraining order, which was granted temporarily but because I didn’t bring a lawyer (stupid me thought as a victim there’d be some sort of prosecutor, I really felt taken by the judge like he was this psycho’s friend or something. I’m holding back, long story short the judge didn’t allow me to play what audio or video I had or allow me an attorney when he told me I had to fight my case alone while he plead the 5th!)
    Your system interface looks nearly identical, literally. 1% different. I had to buy WiFi Zmodo cams so that I could catch the audio. Zmodo didn’t offer an outdoor audiocam system when I got it 3 years ago. My next plan is to update to a lorex system with audio, color night vision, thermal, needed and didn’t know I would but an optical zoom and in 4K. I’ll be adding the maximum amount of terabytes then as well. I’m not as happy with my WiFi cams because It’s recorded to the cloud and doesn’t play like my normal cams to a DVR. However I cannot be sure that it’s the cams and not the cloud. I love in New London CT and like typical coastal New England, houses are very close together, and If you have a mentally unstable neighbor you need these systems to prevent bullying by a 75 year old. I got the cams because the cops said I need proof to charge him and bring him to court. He violated the restraining order less than 12 hours after being served by the sheriff! The judge dropped the charges against him and told me to “Go have coffee with him, and hash out my issues with him...OR TEA! OR TEA! I DON’T WANT TO OFFEND ANY TEA DRINKERS!!!” I thought I must’ve snapped and passed out because there’s no way in hell I just heard this, when outside of having more than a year of proof, I had to be escorted into the courtroom because of the restraining act!
    So in conclusion, justice is a laughable joke. If it isn’t, then it owes me an apology, and reciprocity. I’ve never been arrested, or been a bad citizen, stupidly I thought cripples like me, who’s born with a birth defect that breaks the bones in my spine. Who can I defend against? Currently I have 20 screws, 2 rods, and 2 bridge looking pieces at the top and bottom, my scar is from the collarbone to belly button height on my back. A seam that will never feel normal, pain that’s worse than before, just not crushing my heart anymore from bones pushing in to the cavity too far from having a progressing humpback. I was 35 when I had surgery exactly 4 years ago. I’m saying this so you get why I’m handicapped and need help protecting my family, property, pets, and self. I have a slime bag that is the hero or victim no matter what. I have this guy picking his own tenants garbage over 35 minutes to snoop paperwork, or anything he may find useful, including clothing, medical receipts, or whatever. The guy is a pervert as well, big shock I know.
    And apparently he’s the right one according to the local judge. 🤬🤬🤬

    Hello, great video! We also just bought the Lorex from Costco. We bought the 4K 8 Camera. Cannot get computer program to connect. It says system is off line, have been trying to make this work for a couple days now. VERY FRUSTRATED. Have downloaded the software from the Lorex site and after watching this video, downloaded the Flir Cloud. The FC did detect the system, but still says it is off line. We have been able to get the phone app, Alexa, and Google to connect. So wouldn't it HAVE to be online? Also adjusting threshold and sensitivity because we are getting notifications CONSTANTLY. Now our lights won't come on. Even though we have readjusted the threshold and sensitivity back and actually TOLD the lights to come on. Gave up and turned notifications off-- take it anymore.

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  5 років тому

      Sorry to hear your having some issues. Couple of things to keep in mind on the offline piece. First one is make sure you have a lan cable going from your Lorex NVR to your modem/router attached to your computer. Assuming you did that part and your using the Flir Cloud software like I used in the video go to the devices menu and see if your system is listed in there. If you see it listed in the devices menu select the add button below and it will hopefully bring it online for you. As for the sensitivity, I would recommend you set some zones (i showed it in the video) and play a bit more with the settings. I still get some notifications here and there depending on weather etc but have it set pretty well now. I have the app email me a photo to my gmail and I usually review them once a day or if something seems off. Hope you get it working soon.

Turns out that the LHV DVR boxes do NOT have any Reset button or other functionality installed, it has to be reset from within the DVR controls by using your monitor. I got super upset when I couldn't access my DVR after a new installation simply because I don't have a compatible monitor (I'm using my 1920 x 1080 LG TV as a monitor). Nothing in the set-up guides did it say how easy it was to screw up your whole system just because a user wants to change their resolution. Tech support didn't help because I was put on hold for over 1 hour straight.

      @@RickvanderValk14 Thanks for the reply. Turns out I have a cheaper model that doesn't have this feature. Otherwise it looks almost exactly the same and was a good deal at Best Buy at $379 for a four camera 4k system.

    I had Arlo and returned them because they were horrible at night in the rain...do you have any clips at night in the rain?

    Have you tried it with H.265? I noted in your setup you use H.264. I've heard Lorex cloud functionality can only work with the H.264. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thx! Nice review btw!

    Great video, thanks. Question......How can I make the sound better or even louder? it's like I get more background sound then actually people speaking. Thank you in advance.

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  6 років тому

      If you mean the sounds the mics on the cameras are picking up, you can increase volume on the app and the desktop application to increase sound. In terms of what you can hear and don't hear, I would say at 35 feet if people talk normal you can hear them pretty well, further than that its hard to say, you will hear things like cars etc, but people talking is tougher. It also depends on where you positioned your cameras as well. How high are they? If they are really high than the mics have that much further to go trying to pickup sound.

      It records 24x7 but when you watch footage back you have choices, like only watch motion, highlights or you can watch all the footage..

    Hey Rick, seen both videos on the security cameras and may I say, well done. Absolutely one of the best UNBIASED reviews I've seen so far! When viewing the cameras via your smartphone through the app, do you have to be on WIFI or does it work when you are using cellular data? IE 4G or LTE. Thank you.

    Do you know if I can see this cameras on Google Chromecast with google Assistant?

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  5 років тому

      No but I wish you could. Best I could figure out was to screen mirror your phone to your TV and you could watch on TV that way. I dont know I miss it a lot though, with being able to see it from my computer (which im on all the time for work) and my phone or tablet, the TV isnt such a big deal.

    No picture is coming out on mine. The lorex Title pops out and then it goes black. It’s an older TV that isn’t 4k. And this is system is 4k, you think that could be the reason it isn’t showing.

    What size hard drive does your nvr have and how many days of continuous recording does it hold with 4 cams?

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  5 років тому +1

      It has a 2 TB drive in it. With 4 cameras at 4K its about 7 days. Which is fine, even when we are away I get alerts etc through my app so if something was important i would capture it from there.

    Can this menu be navigated from a TV (via HDM extender over Cat6) somehow? Or do you have to have a monitor directly connected to the NVR?

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  4 роки тому

      If the system is connected to your network you can use a computer to access it. The computer can do most of the configurations but not everything. I grabbed a really cheap used monitor and put it on a shelf in the closet where the NVR is and use it. You can find old/use monitors for pennies on the dollar on facebook market place or any of those site.

    Thanks Rick! Good Video!
    Interestingly I have been using Amcrest PC-NVR for few years, and so as amcrest app. Lorex and Amcrest look extremely alike.... I wonder if both companies have any relationship or if they camera/NVR/software might even be compatible with each other... I am really looking into trying this set of Lorex from costco... But since my background was with amcrest... not sure if it's worth the switch. The biggest attraction from Lorex is the LED light and Siren, although I understand it's probably a weak siren, still better than no one else offering anything like this...
    How's the reliability on Lorex? How fast is their push notification?
    Any feedback will be great from anyone.
    Thanks!

    • @RickvanderValk14
      @RickvanderValk14  5 років тому

      I bet they are very similar. The software for a lot of these systems looks the same. The siren imo is not worth switching. The push notifications are instant and very good.

      Just got my lorex 4K system from Costco.... tester for few days.... honestly, I am impress with the small camera video quality if you tune it right. Yes, default setting is pretty weak, given most users impression the camera is weak. Especially the sub stream. As for the siren and audio quality, both sucks. It really is bad, audio is worst than the tiny wyze cam. Worst part is the slow NVR and app. Super slow app, the slowest I experience, very confused with more than few app can work. Flir and lorex branded apps. I have test all of them.... all pretty bad...
      I am still debating about installing it.... primary due to the weak apps and NVR. I finally figured out there is a way to connect to individual cameras directly, that’s a plus. But the apps are still pretty slow, I have to manually tune down the sub streams to make it go faster.... slow apps slow apps, and slow apps!!!!
      Happy testing
