......and our next video is called: How to tune a French harpsichord..............

    • @Renshen1957
      @Renshen1957 8 років тому +4

+telescopereplicator, the harpsichord cam be tuned in well temperament (Werckmeister, Vallotti, Kirnberger (III), Kellner, Young, except Werckmeister these temperaments come after J S Bach's time) not equally mistuned equal-temperament or mean tone tone (1/3 comma, 1/4 comma, etc). Lute player and father of Galileo conceived the ideas of equal temperament for the Lute circa 1600.
Francois Couperin preferred mean tone tuning (which would be more out of tune to your "modern ears") and hated "well temperament" vs. Rameau who preferred the well tempered system.
Equal temperament of the 19th century was similar to the well tempered systems (the different keys had different "color's).
The Equal tempered system now used (equally wide 3rds and equally narrowed 5ths in all keys) would sound out of tune to the musicians and audiences 18th through late 19th century ears.
Some of the older top of the line Clavinovas electric pianos allowed one to switch between a variety of historical tunings which to our ears and memories sound out of tune.

Call it whatever you want. I call it: "Terribly out of tune".....! It sounds horrible. And whoever playes the instrument, he or she was apparently very drunk or has no talent to play this instrument. Maybe I am being a bit blunt, but I can only comment on what I can hear. Listen to this : 2:58.... You must agree.....ab-so-lute-ly horrible !!

Renshen1957 Just an everage girl asking. What would you call the temperment in medieval era? Like just before bach *ish?

Music written prior to the 15th century used Pythagorean Tuning, which had all 5ths equally tuned and all 3rds impure. There is a phenomenon known as the Pythagorean Comma, in which I recommend looking up also associated with pure fifths. So long as the pieces were in in modal keys (played only on the natural keys) this was not a problem. From about 1510 onward, Meantone temperament becomes popular, each 5th is narrowed (flat) which produces a purer major 3rds in commonly played keys but progressively out of tune in keys in keys with many accidentals (sharps and flats). This is were the Wolf tones come in. However composers exploited these "wolves" for special effects. Well Tempered systems appear in the 17th Century, and co-exist with variants of the meantone systems. Theorists, (the composer Tartini, Vallotti, et al) expound on the well tempered systems in the 18th century.
The first reference to Equal Temperament appear prior to 1600. The father of Galileo Galilei, Vincenzo Galilei was among one of the first practical advocates of twelve-tone equal temperament in Europe. Vincenzo Galilei composed a set of dance suites on each of the 12 notes of the chromatic scale in all the "transposition keys", and published also, in his 1584 "Fronimo", 24 + 1 ricercars for the Lute. However equal temperament does not exist out of plucked, fretted instruments.
In 18th c. France, meantone and well temperament co-exist, but although Rameau favored WT, Francois Couperin, hated WT and prefered MT.
Essentially, although discovered early, the equally mistuned system of ET, wasn't popular (outside of guitarists and lutenists), as it robbed different keys of an associated tonal palette. Each key, however, was a little different, and Bach wrote The Well-Tempered Clavier in all 24 major and minor keys in order to capitalize on those differences, not because the differences didn't exist. J C F Fischer wrote a precursor to this work, Ariande Musica with Preludes and Fugues in 20 keys. (In both boks of the WTC, Bach uses a Fischer subject for one of his Fugues as homage to the composer).
By the 19th century, well temperament, begins to edge out meantone by the mid-century mark. By the close of the 19th century, there's a bit of quandary. The some texts start referring to equal temperament, however, musicologists who specialized in tuning keyboard instruments have discovered that what was being called equal temperament was actually still essentially well temperament when following tuning texts from that time.
Actual equal temperament, finally prevails circa before 1920, not until 1917 was there a method devised for tuning exact equal temperament, if not universally accepted until much later.
An error that Bach wrote the W.T.C. in order to take advantage of what we call equal temperament crept into the 1893 Grove Dictionary, and has since been uncritically taught as fact to millions of budding
musicians. Lord knows how long it will take to get that error out of the universities. It's still in all kinds of reference books.
So after nearly a century of having our ears blunted to Equal Temperament, anything that isn't ET (and historically accurate) is "Terribly out of tune' to some.

Thank you for posting this. I just want to compliment you on your skill and persistence in the construction of this instrument. It has long been one of my ambitions to build a harpsichord and now I have a far better appreciation of what's involved.

Whatever the intended temperament is supposed to be, this harpsichord is grossly out of tune.

I was about to suggest quarter comma meantone, but I think the second track was well out. Maybe it was recorded on a tape recorder. Well done for making a beautiful instrument.

I like the metal braces between the wrest plank and the belly rail. I have a similar arrangement in my 1815 fortepiano. Is that a feature of French harpsichords of the period (I suspect not) but it is certainly going to inhibit the gap closing up over time. I love your decorations and paint job. Looks like you made this in your home? You are to be commended on an excellent job and lovely instrument.

If it is played with mistakes or if it is out of tune, that's circumstancial, irrelevant. The goal is that the harpsichord is working and sounds like such. My congratulations !
