Gibson 80s Explorer FULL DEMO
John uncases, takes apart, and plays the NEW Gibson 80's Explorer with 80's Tribute humbuckers modeled after the famous Tim Shaw Dirty Fingers.
DROP A COMMENT: EXPLORER or FLYING V?
FROM GIBSON:
While the Explorer wasn't a huge success when it was first introduced in 1958, guitarists revisited the model and discovered its many charms as the years passed. Rockers began to embrace its futuristic shape and powerful sound by the 1970s, but during the hard rocking 80s, the model came into its owns and was adopted by some of the greatest players of the decade.
The 80s Explorer is based on the popular 1984 model. It features a fast-playing SlimTaper mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard. The iconically-shaped mahogany body is outfitted with "80s Tribute" pickups that accurately capture the unique fat-toned sound and rich sustain of the models from that era. A hardshell case is also included.

Explorers are the greatest. Loved em since I saw Hetfield playing them. Got 3 Gibsons , One Ghost Horse , and two other ex shaped guitars.
Same. I used to have a 2002 Gibson gothic explorer. I wish I never sold it. Now I have a 2020 epi explorer, 07 Ltd ex400 black, and a 2014 Ltd ex360 white, which is my favorite. Oh yeah, also have a Harley Benton ex modern blk. It's ok. The ex360 just has something special about it. James Hetfield was my musical inspiration also.
Sweet man. I am still undecided between this one and the 70s in classic white.
Word on the street is they’re releasing these 80’s explorers in white later this year
@@brooksroman2918 they totally should release it soon! the white one is the most iconic of the two for obvious reasons.
@@Maroma5361 james hetfield
Holy crap I want one in white
I’ve heard from some people that Gibson plans on releasing a white one later in the year!
Congratulations John and Zack for reaching 50,000 subscribers. Great show. Keep up the good work. EdB
i like how nobody is comparing them to the epiphones that came equipped with emg’s and feels/sounds amazing..
This is my favorite guitar that you’ve reviewed in a while. Those tones are killer. Your demo was great btw
Nice demo and review guys imho it needs covers on the pups , other than that pretty nice !!
What a great looking and sounding Explorer home run on that one Gibson 👌
I really love the simplicity of this guitar
It's funny, I felt the same way. When I was a kid in the '80's, there's no way I would have believed the Explorer and V were designed in the '50's.
Dude, I’m ordering mine today! I can’t wait!
I had an 84 Custom Shop Explorer in violet burst … I think thats what the color was called. Anyway, WONderful guitar! Along with my 98 Les Paul Special SL Humbucker, N225, and Guild X-80, EASILY one of my all time favorite guitars. Perfect balance, loved everything about it! Too bad they all burned up in a house fire
I also have a N-225 Nighthawk and one of the 80's explorer. I have been selling some guitfiddles lately but have been thinking of selling the N-225 (cherry red) If you're interested let me know.
@@420DamienDarkblade Thanks man, much appreciated! Thats a tempting offer! Theyre a great guitar. Alas, Im in the market for another car, so buying another guitar is off the table. One exception would be if I found another X-80 for cheap, but thats highly unlikely. Thanks again, though!
Awesome....its the middle position for me! Perfect blend of bite and tub! Sick guitar, great playing!
Love my Explorer. Just glad I didn't have to pay 2500 bucks for it. lol
That's a sweet guitar. I really want an explorer.
Still waiting for people to play metal on this
I just shot a video and it’s all Metallica sounding stuff. I don’t like the pickups, and I’m in the process of swapping them out. I’ll post the video later on this week.
@@charlesrocks okay sounds great. Do they not sound like the dirty fingers?
@ThisDudeKhyle I bought two of these guitars and I’m putting the classic EMG 81/60 into one and a Gibson 500T in the bridge of the other
@@yea-okay-bud4841 they sound like shit
Love the looks of these and first
Great video. All personal preference but at that price point it would have been nice to see a little more zing like chrome covers on the pickups and may a nice 3 ply black/w/black pickguard. I am not quite sure why this is $500 more than the standard explorer which is an incredible sounding and playing guitar. Thanks for all you do. I am now a subscriber. :)
Thanks for your support! I think they're going for the period correct Dirty Fingers pickup look, which were uncovered but I hear you for sure
Those are some of the best guitars to play. You just sound like rock should. I sold mine because I wanted something that fit on my lap better. I got that
I was wondering if the pickups were made after dirty fingers. Thanks for sharing that info. Gonig to have to check out specs 80s vs 70s.
I agree I would move those controls around a bite.
Great review! I wonder if this one has neck dive problem like most of the other brand Explorer models. This is the question before I buy this one.
I did not experience any neck dive, I think these balance really well and this one was light weight. Thanks for watching, and if you buy I hope you consider using our link: www.zzounds.com/a--3979398/item--GIBDSVE00E
Thanks and let us know what you think!
hey özer, bet you are living in tr from your name. do you have any info on when they will release this in tr?
Just a random comment. I picked up the Black Lzzy hale explorer used for 2500. If you want another option for an explorer purchace.
Thnx for this , great job.....and nice playing ;-)
Those pickups sound very distinctive
Just ordered mine 👍
Congrats that's awesome! Let us know what you think, I enjoyed this one! 🤘🍻
Love the guitar and I get that prices are increasing everywhere.....but man, $2500 seems a bit steep for a non-carved, non-bound Gibson. What am I missing here??
So everyone is speculating... is this smaller than a 70's explorer or 84 explorer? Everyone says it looks and feels smaller in person. Sucks Gibson did not match the real 1984 body, pickups and switch location.
I dont get that control layout, not the knobs position cause theyre similar to a 67' V, but the toggle switch position is really akward. Everytime you strum a chord seems you gonna hit that toggle.
Are the pickups Alnico 5?
I like this explorer, no pickguard and sleek look. I kind of wish they had a couple other colors, White ones would have sold like crazy. I would like to see a crazy Neon version. Now I am going to check out the V, might be getting it.
White version are coming later this year! 🙂
@@siskabobs cool, however James' explorer I think is ESP, I know his White V isn't Gibson. I think its like electra or something. I like this V the best of all they have except maybe the Prophecy. However, I'm waiting to see the Dave V by Epiphone or Kramer. A white V and Explorer with maple fretboards would be cool. Getting a case with the guitar is a bonus too. Some cases can be over $200 value.
@@sinakaedwards2009 Hetfield played a white Gibson Explorer alongside the Electra V before moving over to ESP. There is a video of them performing For Whom The Bell Tolls in 1985 where he uses it.
I love it awesome awesome
Damn, Gibson can't get their own models right...
I have an original one that looks just like this one from 1984. The strap button is on the "front" facing towards the headstock, and the neck itself is made out of maple (not the fretboard) and the body is made of alder. Thank god I've got an OG, because I wouldn't want to fork out cash for this one!
I thought I was too much cherry picking but yeah those points you mentionned are a bummer for me. Furthermore, if you watch closely, the knobs and toggle switch are not exacly positionned like the 80s explorers.
That’s a good looking axe. My next is gonna be a LP special though.
what size are the strings?
KooL guitar man !
I will never understand why they hold back the white one. Either I'm too engulfed in the Hetfield connection or Gibson has crunched som numbers and chose ebony before white.
They even released a 84 reissue (Guitar of the month I believe) in 2007 only in white with emg's. Clearly a Hetfield hommage without him endorsing it. It's hard to follow Gibson logic.
I honestly wonder if it's because they know that people have been begging for an EXP without a pickguard for long enough that a lot of people will buy the black one now. When they release the white ones (supposedly layer this year), maybe they are banking on many of those same people buying another one along with all the folks waiting on the white ones? I imagine if they released them together, they might sell very few of any black ones they made. That's the only thing I can think of that makes a lick of sense (even then, not sure it makes a LOT of sense 😂).
Needs black harware, locking tuners, small black knobs and a hetset.
Pickups... Dude.. It's rock! #wanna
Any Lefty’s Gibson 80s Explorer???🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
By the way… Congratulations to whomever won the Gibson Les Paul C😊ustom!
I want to hear it through a modern high gain metal amp with a tube screamer in front of it.
I got an O G one just like it.
I think my only complaint about the design is that they didn't put binding on the neck. Plain black binding wouldn't have detracted from the look and would have made it more comfortable to play. At the same price-point as the 70s explorer, which has binding on the neck, ot is a bit disappointing. BUT, if they actually release a white one then I'll live with it to finally have a plain white explorer body with no pick guard 🤣
Yea it's interesting in sticking with the stripped down specs of the 84 version, they also have to find a way to justify the higher price, and it becomes harder to do when you compare - I agree! They do look incredible especially in person when you see the mirror like black gloss, and keeping it simple does lend to that aesthetic. Price is the sticking point for many though
Who won the green Les Paul Custom??
I don’t thing it was picked yet
Winner was drawn on Gleam and posted there. They were notified via email. Thanks!
@Play and Trade Guitars OK thanks. Guess it wasn't me lol.
Gregory M
@Paul Cook Yeah I just went and looked lol.
I think the explorers that came with 500T about 10 years ago were better guitars in terms of tone
This or the flying V??
Go with your gut! I like both styles, Explorer is a better balanced playing experience
I dont see how you can give it a high score on value? Its $500 more than the standard explorer and has a decal instead of the mother of pearl, which is a downgrade. Pickups are all worth the same on the usa line, literally uses the same number of pots, same tuners as well. The 80s lacks a pickguard and a proper logo. So less material used and somehow has a $500 price increase? They are charging more because people think of metallica and no other reason
The Hetfield explorer.
By 80’s you mean Hetfield? 😂😂
can i have the 50k guitar 😉😉
Maybe a blues player isn't the best choice to showcase a metal guitar🤷🏼
There's no such thing as a metal guitar .
@@butterfinger4393 ok. A guitar made famous and rebirthed thanks in great part to the metal community of the 80s and this one built as a tribute to that WITH DIRTY FINGERS PICKUPS.
Yeah. A metal guitar.
To be fair, it’s this guy’s channel who reviews a lot of guitars and he plays how he plays. I’m sure there’s some more metal youtubers out there that will do videos on this guitar. He still gives a really fair review
@@brooksroman2918 no doubt! And I apologize if I came off like that. There's a reason I subscribe. I'm just saying that in their stable, I'm sure there is a player more versed in the style associated with this guitar and the player who is likely to purchase one. It's like having a metal shredder review a guitar used primarily by a jazz player. ALL styles play very few of the same guitars- LP, Strat, Tele(maybe). Outside of that it's pretty much genre specific for marketing and sales.
@@k2rocksstl I gotcha!
it's finally there!!! 😍😍😍
