Hey there! Unfortunately, I haven't read that story, so I have no context for what that line might mean within the narrative. If I had to throw out a guess, I would say that maybe it means that all the men in the camp stood up at the same time.

Not exactly.
"Denotation" is defined as "the literal meaning of a word."
"Connotation" is defined as "the tone or feeling that a word invokes."
So, it's possible for words to have the same denotation but different connotations.
