The AJV8 is not definitely _not_ a Ford engine as explained below:
"The Chief Engineer (project leader) for the AJ26 project was Dave Szczupak. The actual lead designer for the cylinder head was Joe Cooke and for the bottom end of the engine (block, crank, rods, pistons, oil system etc) it was Nigel Massey and Carl White. The engine was 100% unique. The only Ford parts used were the oil filler cap, the crank shaft damper woodruff key and the sump plug. The AJ26, 27, 28, 34 & LR V8's were only ever built in Bridgend, North Wales. The AJ30 (3.9l US version) was built in Lima in the USA and used in the Thunderbird and Lincoln DEW98. The engine was adopted into LR vehicles in 2004; first in the Discovery/ RR Sport and then replacing the BMW 4.4l V8 in the RangeRover (L322)."

Ford did want to use one of their engines to save costs when they took over Jaguar but it it was found to run as rough as a pig in comparison. So Ford ask them to continue with development.

I knew a guy who had this in white, put fat wheels on it. It looked gangsta. He got all the hos with that Jag. Too bad it's unreliable. Otherwise, I would've gotten one too.
Man i'm surprised that people even come in for a tune up! Most people show up when a misfire has developed at 200,000 thousand miles with the factory plugs lol.
Depends on what spark plugs the manufacturer puts in. Usually the iridium spark plugs last around 100,000 miles but if the car starts burning oil, then they might need to be changed sooner.
@@PseudoSpaceMarine Another thing that happens when spark plugs wear out is the gap becomes larger between the center electrode and ground electrode. This fools the the computer into thinking that the engine is running leaner so it dumps in more fuel lowering the fuel economy. The larger gap also requires more voltage ruining the coils.
@@user-bl8dq9ny7x My own car gets about 1mpg less than when I last changed the plugs. They are due in another 25-30K miles, so it's not a huge deal. But if you pay careful attention, you KNOW when the car isn't running at 100%

As I see it, the Jag owner is hit double whammy because 1) the intercooler (and/or poor engineering?) renders the spark plugs difficult to access AND 2) there is a sucker you can charge $175/hour where $100/hour is the norm.

I really miss my old 1960s Mercedes. lol. Absolutely nothing plastic in it except for some door knob and dash buttons and handles. No fuel injection, not a single computer on it.
@@emilemasbou7950after working in the car business, owners of luxury models like Jags and Mercedes feel a sense of pride and are happy to hear parts and labor are more expensive on their cars. It is really bizarre and puzzles me still. I guess if you have the money to buy it new you probably have the money to pay for expensive repairs...at least until you go buy another brand new $70-100k car 😅

It is a "rich man's car", and if you complain like that to any mechanic then they will tell you shouldn't have bought a "rich man's car" if you don't want to pay those bills. Wiiiizard is right on, that is just the world of higher-end imports and you should probably stick with Buicks if you have a problem with it.

That's one thing some people still don't understand about owning old, used, out of warranty premium luxury cars: cheap to buy doesn't always mean cheap to keep or maintain. Cost of maintenance doesn't decrease with the value of the vehicle. I recommend buying a service manual and appropriate tools if you intend to purchase and keep these vehicles.
I just unsubscribed. You can buy the best Mobil 1 full synthetic for $30 for 5 quarts or really great Valvoline for far less at any Walmart across the country. So your $15 per quart comment for oil is total BS. Your click bate nonsense doesn’t help anyone.
Yet with the average new car payment running $738+ currently, these can be better than a new budget car and cost you quite a bit less to keep running than those payments. Not free, but sometimes a good choice. That said, no, a Jaguar or BMW is now what I'd choose as superchargers are notorious for turning cars into money pits.
but then you don't have the depreciation. If you have the dough I reckon go used, with full history, certified warranty , save 50k+ on the depreciation and use that to maintain for many many years. Newer cars are getting far too complicated and far too screen focused.
If you want a classic car, there are still simple, basic, everyday models from the 60s that you could have a lot of fun owning and almost maintain yourself, still with affordable 100% parts availability. That's the sensible approach. Out of warranty premium rare luxury cars with rare and expensive parts? That way lies madness (and bankruptcy). Leave them to the millionaire car enthusiasts!

You don't drain these supercharged 5.0 JLR motors from the sump. Underneath the oil fill cap is a small tube that you connect a vacuum extractor to and remove the old oil. If you drain the sump from below you leave about 1 to 1.5 quarts of old oil behind, but the vacuum extraction method removes it all.
Saw that in a JLR dealership, extractor pump was the official method. It's pretty quick, and if you're going to own one of these, it's the easiest oil change to learn to do yourself.
I had an 1986 Jaguar XJS 12 cylinder. I was quoted over $1K for a tune up in 2000. Did a lot of research and figured I could do it myself. Went fine until I rebuilt the distributor advance. I managed to put it in 180 degrees out of sync. When I tried to start it, heard a loud noise and metal grinding. The worm gear inside the engine was stripped and required a complete teardown to replace. about $6000 later had a rebuit engine - all new gaskets and hoses, rings etc. It never really ran right after that, sold it for whatever I could get ($4K) just so I could stop the bleeding.
Thats why i love my old Saab. I just did a full service this weekend with genuine Saab oil, Saab boxed spark plugs, filters etc. Total £65. Cheap as.

Only problem is that Saab spare parts haven't been produced for years. You'll have same problems like refitting a '65 automobile, except those have retroproduction.
easy to get here in Europe there is a large aftermarket supply, many Saab parts from the late 90s are standard GM parts as they shared engine with Opels.@@Munakas-wq3gp
@@Munakas-wq3gp Absolute rubbish. Genuine SAAB parts are still made in Sweden by the Orio / Hedden Parts group. And they have an outlet in the UK so i can get genuine new parts next day.

Propably the plate lghts are on all the time, because somebody have replased original bulbs to LED:s without resistors.
Interesting thought- If the vehicle electronics used the reverse light circuit as a ground path for an electronic circuit board, that may be the explanation.
If this were an older car, I'd suspect someone modified the wiring: A stuck reverse light switch would turn off when you turned off the car, so the power would be coming from some unknown "always hot" source. However, on newer cars the circuit can run through one or more control boards, and all sorts of strange things can occur.

Hoovie made a very true statement about old luxury cars when he said the purchase price is just the down payment. And it’s cutting corners on maintenance that causes problems- then people say Jags are unreliable when it’s usually down to poor maintenance. I have had loads of Jags and they have been great - but pricey. I have just given my Jag dealer £293 for an oil and filter change for example!
By the way those engines were built in the Ford factory in Wales but by Jaguar employees. But Jaguar took production of the V8s totally back in house a couple of years ago. Beautiful cars to drive.

BMW's can be very reliable years down the road if proactive maintenance was done. People just won't spend the moeny.

Part of the issue is 2016-2020 jags say you come in every 24.000km with a petrol and every 36.000 with a diesel. They do this to make a statement about how reliable they are now. But yeah, don't actually go 36.000 between service, you get it done every 15.000 and post 2016 jags really are reliable. I haven't changed a thing on mine besides tires, breaks and oil.
The Jaguar XJL SC 5.0L is one of the finest car I have ever owned. Just wish they were more reliable and and less expensive to maintain.

My friend owns 2 Astin Martin's, just an oil change is $1200+ at the dealership!!
My 2007 DB9 Cost me $350 and that is 16 quarts of Mobil One. However he is getting more work done than just the oil change. A lot of adjustments, lubrication, etc. That is a typical cost at an AM dealer. I go to an independent that specializes in AM, and is half the price and a better job. Also fun to visit seeing all the DB2, DB4, DB5, DB6, and older Vantages.

Back in the 1990s, we used to have a saying..."You can't buy a bad Jag cheap enough." That's still true today.
The XJ x351 models actually are fairly reliable, a few electrical issues but on the whole really not that bad. The V6 and V8 they used are solid on the XJ, they dont get stressed as much as they do when used in Range Rovers given weight etc and the rumour is that they thought this could be the last ever XJ so people put a tad more care on them in the factory.
Ford ruined them to be fair didn't invest enough, plus Americans dont spend the money on them re servicing/maintenance, it's a shame really
A tune up (spark plugs replacement) of a V6 Highalnder or Camry costs $800 bucks - every 60k miles

Some mechanics can do it without tearing the intake off. Have to love that book time...

@@Robert-lr3wr Depends on the exact engine model. Some Toyota engines ship with platinum plugs, which get the 60k mile service suggestion. The engines with iridium plugs get the 120k mile suggestion.

Wizard, disappointed you'd suggest this V8 is a Ford just because the oil filter canister says FOMOCO. When Ford bought Jaguar in the early '90s, they were so impressed with the V8 engine that Jaguar had under development, Ford decided to bring it to market and offer it in Lincolns and Thunderbirds, as well. Ford never publicized this because they were afraid more traditional customers might not like the idea of having a Jag engine in their Lincoln or Tbird. The engine was built in a Jag-dedicated facility within Ford's Bridgend, UK engine plant, where Ford cast the block and heads. After Ford sold Jaguar, Ford continued to build the engine and use it in Lincolns, and Ford built it for Jaguar under contract. Ford discontinued the engine in Lincolns a few years ago, and all the tooling and machinery was purchased by JLR, which until recently built it in house. To say the Jaguar V8, or V6 derivative, is a Ford is like saying an Audi has a VW engine. Jaguar did use a Ford-derived I4 and V6 engine in the early to mid '00s, but this V8 and the later V6, which is this V8 with the back 2 cylinders blanked off, were Jaguar engines.
90 degree V8s always sound rough though and blanking off two cylinders was a weird idea. I thought the Ingenium I4 was supposed to get a straight 6 variant?

The Ingenium I6 came out several years ago (2021?) and replaced the v6 variant of this v8. The I6 is used in the F-pace, Defender, and maybe some Range Rovers?
It is ironic that Jag owners wouldn't dare drive something as pedestrian as a Ford. And Ford/Lincoln owners are thankful they didn't buy anything as unreliable as a Jaguar.

That's wisdom. Fortunately for me (and my thin wallet) I'm allergic to all European brands. There were moments when I came fairly close to buying a VW Rabbit/Golf GTI. Ultimately, I thought better of it and stayed w/Asian or mainstream domestics both because of budgets and peace of mind.
If you don’t have to pay $120-$170/hour because you can do the work yourself, it’s not that big a deal. If you don’t have time, then that’s a different thing.

I was the British High Commissioners Chauffeur. We had one of these. Less than 20 thousand kilometres, and a 4k claim on the air conditioning. Plus many other warranty claims that weren't acknowledged by Jaguar. And that's to the British High Commission. Stay away people.

Maybe that's why the prices you're throwing out don't look right to me...Also, you're comparing a non-luxury brand with a luxury brand with very different technology and training requirements. I know because I was a JLR technician. Also, Buick dealers charge a lot more than $100 an hour. $150-$185 is the norm now depending on the state....Cars have varying levels of complexity and performance. You think these prices are high? I have to remove the entire engine to do spark plugs/tune up on an older Ferrari from the 1990's. Expect to spend $7,500.

Had one of those. Despite developing some irritating electrical gremlins (insisting there was a suspension fault when there wasn't one, being convinced the hood is not latched at over 120mph), it had something none of my previous German and Japanese cars had - charm. You were just glad it existed and happy to see it in your driveway every morning.
We had a guy come into the tire store in the 90's, who drove couple hours to the nearest Jaguar dealer. He told us it was $1K for his service from the dealer, and that was 1996.

Tag Lights: I don’t think they were originally LED. Replace them with standard bulbs or put a ballast resistor and they will probably go out. Otherwise, leave them as the owner said. They draw almost less than nothing.

I have one of these cars , and some of the major issues can be done at home pretty easily. But the major issue it has is”timing chain guides “ is what would scare most but still can be done at home with the proper tools and patience
I have an XF with this 5.0L (non-supercharged) and I've never heard of them having timing chain defects - Is that really a thing?

I have a 2005 XJ8 L. Love the car and the semi-classic Jaguar styling. I've also accepted it's not cheap to fix. Just finding a shop willing to work on it was hard enough. I've been fortunate to have very few problems.
I wonder if the car originally had halogen bulbs in the tag lights and they swapped them to LED and they draw so little current they are getting enough passing through to keep them on all the time
You’ll get finished with the plugs in 2 hours easy! I’ve done it on my XJ and the plugs were $8 each… the oil by the gallon comes out to $5 per quart. Especially when you’re a great mechanic or even an average mechanic can do a simple tune up on ANY car.

He isn't shy about throwing shade on other shops though, is he? But no problem charging "$15, 20" per quart of oil.
Back in the day oil at $1 / quart (sometimes as low as 60 cents) was so cheap we used it as hydraulic fluid in the old tractor. Now I pay $12 /quart for "synthetic". Those were the days my friend.
This vehicle uses 5w20. Ten quarts of Pennzoil Platinum can be had for less than $60.

I used to have this 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander with a transverse V6 engine and front wheel drive. I asked the nearby shop in my town how much they would charge to switch out all six spark plugs and they wanted to charge me at least $250 because it requires disassembling the intake plenum and vacuum lines which cover the rear bank of cylinders. I did it myself for free and I also replaced the rear and front valve cover gaskets and almost every single issue the car was having went away immediately.
If this is the same supercharged V8 as the F-type R, I think the oil can be siphoned from the oil fill hole, there is a small tube to connect the siphon so that you don't need to drain from the bottom.

I have had a 2013 3.0 diesel for 5 years now. No issues other than regular servicing, a couple of tyres and headlight bulbs.
*Everything* is expensive now. Gone are the days when you may get a Ford or GM fixed for half what that same repair on an Audi would cost; those are long over never to return. I just had a power steering pump replaced in a 2006 Lexus ES330 and it was almost $1000. When a junk built Jeep Wrangler 392 costs $100,000 we are in the Age of Keeping Your Car Forever.
Cost-per-mile is lower than ever, as long as you own a Toyota. Major service is expensive, but infrequent enough to more-than offset the cost.

my Xj has sat for 3 months in winter and started right up when I came back. bought it new in 2017. has 56k miles now and still looks new. no reliability issues. 5k oil changes

No worries in the future. I just read the other day that Jag is headed towards total electrification in the next few years. My thought is IF they last THAT long as they appear to be circling the drain now.
Jaguar has been seen as almost a zombie company since the 90's. Always one bad step away from bankruptcy. Yet somehow they stumble along. Probably has a lot to do with legacy. People who like them will continue to buy the next one. And they manage to pick up just enough new owners to replace the dead ones. Not a model I'd prefer to base my business around, but it will keep working until it doesn't and a Chinese company buys the whole thing for pennies on the dollar.
Just like Volvo, electrification is on the path to bankruptcy.

David, the AJ engine was designed by Jag-You-Are in the 1980's as a replacement for both their inline 6 (600 pounds)
and their V12 (750 pounds) in order to fit into the smaller cars they wanted to build. Ford bought Jaguar [pronounced "Jag WHaar" by the indigenous tribes in Central and South America where these cats lived] and walked in the door with no knowledge of this engine; They were astounded. The engine was VERY good and well designed, so the despite the fact that they had just designed the "Novi" engine or the 4.6 liter modular V8 that debuted in 1988, they kept the different but similar design. What they DID do was re-engineer it to use as many FoMoCo parts are possible; That is why you look at a filter cup on a JagWhaar engine and it says that.
On Porsche's, the filter cup is supposed to be replaced during the oil change; I do this every other year on my current '14 Porsche Cayman S.

I have a 96 Chevy truck and 2 95 Volvos. Thanks for reminding me why I'm keeping them! The Volvos have around 350k miles each, and they have many more to go! It pays to find cars you like and learn how to fix them inside and out.

I have a Jaguar with the 5l supercharged v8. It's also tuned, running a smaller pulley, high flow downpipes, etc. 70k miles and very reliable. But knowing the possible problem areas, I proactively replaced alot of the plastic cooling bits and supercharger coupling

My Ford sedan has a 5L supercharged V8 with an intercooler (different engine but same configuration) and you can get to the spark plugs easily. The supercharger fits in the V. The only ones that are a bit tricky are the last two near the firewall.
They just didn't design this one with maintenance in mind. Seems to be a common problem with European cars.
@@nicholasvinen Oh, trust me, it's not just the Europeans these days... I have a friend who manages to buy every American vehicle that has ridiculous maintenance problems.
@@nicholasvinen The front of your Ford is boxier, so you get more room to configure the intercooler differently, Jaguars are low, lithe & sleek, so have a lower bonnet (hood), & the trade off is the intercooler location getting in the way of the plugs. My older XJR has a similar engine, but the supercharger/intercooler is within the Vee (but are 6" higher), so they don't need touching to get to the coils or plugs.

Thank you for explaining stuff like this. I also remember the video about "just a heater core" replacement. Most people don't know what actually goes into doing the work. Though I think it reinforces my idea that engineers are the natural enemies of mechanics.
I used to own an Acura RL3.5. When I took it to the dealership to have the timing belt replaced (Very important). I was quoted $950 for the service. My first thought was to keep the old belt and just replace the engine around it. I guess the service person was used to customers being in shock when told how much it was going to cost. There happened to be a similar model having the same service done. He showed me what needed to be done to get to the belt. Essentially take apart half of the front of the car. Plus replacing the water pump and other bits while they were at it.
It made sense, but it was still a shock.
I disagree on your comment regarding engineers. The natural enemy of the engineer and mechanic is the 'bean-counter'.

Hey Car Wizard, if this is like the 5L, you dont drain the oil through the bottom. You simply get one of the vacuum pumps and stick a tube in the oil dipstick area and it pumps it out. On the 5L, that's the official factory recommended method, and thats why the oil filter is up top - it's a no mess, simple job that takes less than 10 minutes to do. You *could* drain from the bottom, but the drain is covered and a PITA to get to, really just used as a backup if you don't have a pump. Honestly, doing my oil on my 5L XKRs is my easiest chore, I look forward to it.
This is exactly why I drive a 2004 Buick Park Avenue Ultra with the Buick 231 CID 3800 Series II Supercharged costed me 259.99 for a tune up.

The plate lamps might not be draining the battery that badly but the wiring and/or one of the computers could eventually smoke/catch fire/melt wiring. I’d have been much more adamant to get him to approve diagnosis/repair. It’s more of a safety issue than optional/cosmetic issue.

2015 F-Type R, and oil changes on this engine are incredibly easy to do with an extractor. Plugs weren't that bad either, but there's more room under the hood of the F-Type to work with.

If the owner took out the license plate LED lights and put the stock bulbs back in, it would operate normally. The low voltage/resistance is throwing off the system.
Even on my lowly Chrysler, the mopar plugs are $16 x 16 plugs! But they are easier to get to.
