Just got the SMC takumar 55mm 1.8 yesterday!! Absolutely astonishing how nice the image quality and background compression with a tiny 5mm over the 50mm!! And it's super easy to manual focus compared to my Fd 50mm 1.4
Awesome video man! You’re street photography images are insane with so much dynamic range! I have these lenses myself and can’t wait to use them on my new Sony body ASAP! Keep up the great work!
I still have my SMC Takumar 55mm f/1.8 that I bought on my Spotmatic back in 1965. I'm waiting for an M42 adapter so I can put it back to work on my X-mount camera.
I totally agree with you. I love vintage lenses. They are really cheap and really full of characters. Using them on my rangefinder is a real pain, but well worth the trouble.
I have the SMC Takumar 55mm F1.8 (M42) - and I really really love it. I like your discussion - not boring über-tech heavy, and practical and real! I am busy putting together my review on it for my channel.
Yes I do! But I admit it is much easier to use on a mirrorless camera. However, you can use liveview with the DIII to focus and it's all good. Great for video, if you have Magic Lantern you can get peaking too : )
Noealz, I didn't realise that you can do that... Which adapter do you need? I don't have these lenses, but would consider adapting my Nikkor AIS & Mamiya lenses. As for the focus thing, for street, f5.6/8 and the depth of field markers on the lens can avoid focusing issues. But probably only works for DAYTIME photography. :) A.,
@@AlexJacksonSmith You can get an adapter for your lenses, for example my lenses are m42 screw mount. So I just need an m42 adapter for my specific camera. You can find pretty cheap adapters online for around 10 dollars that will allow you to use old lenses with your digital cameras. But of course, different lenses with different mounts require different adapters! Most of my vintage lenses are m42 so lucky for me : )
Yes but I thought the distance between older lenses and the canon is similar to the mamiya to nikon and requires "correcting glass". Nikkor lenses on a Nikon needs no adapter, but more importantly no correcting lens. Which brand do you use for the Canon adapting? Just a cheap thing or one of the more costly brands?
Hey Noe First of all, I'm a big fan of your work as a fellow photographer Im looking to visit Korea soon and was wondering if you knew any places that sell vintage lenses
Great and informative video thanks my friend just don’t leave your radioactive lenses in your camera because the sensor is affected in just one or two weeks
@@MikMilman Well, I do have some daytime photos - and they are usually warm but I always thought it was perhaps because of the yellowing. Even when I white balanced them they did have a tint of warmth to them
Mik, Similar effect on colours can be found with the Mamiya-Sekor 35mm lens range. 55mm f1.9, 28mm f2.8 and the 105mm f2.8. Also have a rather similar effect with the AIS lenses.
I don’t like that zoom... you should always push the zoom button 4 times to go back to your full image... Very not handy. Magic lantern doesn't work with the mark IV... but I am still searching for a mirrorless anyway so sooner or later I will change. I just take my time 😉
Thanks for this video, you made things easy to understand! I have just one (stupid) question, does the film body (SLR) become radioactive in it self after years of being so close to the lens?
No, radioactive decay is about atoms with very large nuclei or too many neutrons in their nuclei being unstable. They break into smaller atoms by splitting off fragments and sub-atomic particles and lose excess energy as radiation. The radiation and the particles can ionise materials as they hit them or pass through them. They can’t make the materials the camera is made of radioactive.
My favorite is the 55 f2. It's the same optical formula as the f1.8 except It's very sharp wide open. Smooth bokeh, sharp, and even cheaper than the 1.8 or the 1.4.
@@jimshorts9708 the F2 is the same lens as the F1.8. Knowing Pentax, it might even have a ghost stop for f1.8 on the aperture ring. They just hobbled it to make it appear to be a budget option on their less expensive bodies. They would sometimes ha a ghost 1/1000 shutter speed on cameras with 1/500 marked as the maximum shutter speed on the dial. A ghost click beyond that was 1/1000.
They're not so cheap on ebay here in Germany anymore because they have gained some sort of cult following like the Helios recently. But my favourite cheap lens is actually also a Pentax, the 50mm 1.7 that came as a kit lens with every second Pentax camera in the late 70s. It's incredibly sharp wide open and has such a buttery smooth bokeh, and it's still incredibly cheap if you don't get it from the first "buy now" professional on ebay. I got mine for 10 Euros on a flea market, I bet you can still find it for 20 everywhere. And it doesn't yellow, although maybe for B/W that yellowing is a feature, not a bug. :) Also maybe worth mentioning, Pentax K is as easy to adapt also on Canon DSLRs as M42, should you still own one of those dinosaurs. :D
Will do - I actually love old lenses, for their imperfections and character. The only vintage lens I really want though is a Jupiter 9 but that will probably be a very long time from now since I just had to replace my camera :/

Night photography is fun - I hope you will enjoy :)
got 55mm and its one of my TOP favourite lenses. along with Canon 1.4 FDn 50
enjoy :)
I got the super takumar 50mm 1.4 from my grandfather. It flares nicely and is very nice for video on my a7sii. Super small too
Yeah these lenses are really small and the build quality is awesome, love them so much

I think you will find that adapting lenses to mirrorless can become a little addictive
Picked one up in great condition. Only had 1 go with it outside but I love how it’s sharp and has a milky glow to it.
very nice :)
Thanks for sharing. Still on the fence about the radioactive aspect, but thanks for shining more light on that issue.
No worries!
This is my first time seeing your work - incredible! So unique and cool. Amazing what you're doing with vintage lenses. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks friend and welcome : ) I'd like to believe I am doing something right! The only videos about gear I make are about vintage lenses I own~
@@Noealz I look forward to checking out more of those videos. I'll binge watch them this week, haha.
Be sure to like them cuz it helps LOL
@@Noealz I'm a liking machine, I gotcha.
Hey I just found your channel. Love your content! What camera body are you shooting the photos in this video on?
I dont remember well actually, it was so long ago! I use many bodies and I experiment with the lenses : )

hehe perfect, hope my info helped
My SMC 55mm F 1.8 is not very sharp on the corner. not even at F 4. is this normal?
Pretty normal for older lenses!
surprisingly great video. Love your channel ! Keep it up ! and the photos you shoot ARE AWESOME !!
Thank you so much! More good stuff coming especially once it is warmer
lens a part , love your photo for sure
Thank you very much!
Dude your photography is fantastic. What camera are you shooting on?
The camera isnt important! I use my phone alot
@@Noealz so you mounted your 50mm and 55mm to your phone! Wow!!
Just ordered the 1.4 takumar. I also have a SMC 135mm 3.5 and love that one.
You will be very happy : )
PS, the Industar isn't radioactive, just wanted to show that cheap lenses are good
Do you use any of these vintage lenses on you Canon 5DmkIII?

I got that pentax SMC takumar 55.8
a fine lens ;)
One thing I don't hear anyone talking about with the Takumar is how warm it renders color and I do not think its because of yellowing.
maybe i dont notice it soo much because I mostly shoot at night and play with the colors alot =p
@@Noealz You can def see it in one of my comparison videos. But who knows... maybe it varies copy to copy

I wish my 5DIV has some peaking or something to help manual focus... Part of why I wanna change it...😅
You can just zoom in and focus in live view, part of what I do. Or just install Magic Lantern and use their focus peaking~
I don’t like that zoom... you should always push the zoom button 4 times to go back to your full image... Very not handy.

Hii.What is radioactieve lens ? This lenses problem for human healty ?
dont lick them and you'll be fine : )
One or more sheets of glass on the lens contain thorium oxide, a radioactive element.

Are the topcon lenses radioactive? Their coating almost looks like the ones from pentax
adrian abrogena there is only one radioactive topcor lens and I believe it is the Topcor RE 50mm f1.4 :)

bokeh is insane on the 50 1.4 but the 55 1.8 is insanely sharp. i wanna sell but cannot find anyone whos willing to take a radiated lens off my hands
