  • This is my third movie over the years on how to roll an Open Canoe, and I might add my best yet, even though it is not long or elaborate. I made this especially for Jay Arey and Brian Stewart, in Jay Arey's canoe so Jay can see that it can be very easy to roll in his new boat. (As well as my other friends, Caja Ormand, and others that are learning.)

I was trying to think of the perfect words to help you do this roll easier, an first must say that is is pure technique, and not a lot of muscle. Try to practice your low brace by rotating your hips up to the paddle, which is called the hip snap. When you can tip your boat over 90 degrees or more and come up on the low brace with that hip rotation and stomach flex, you are ready to do the roll.

I think ONE of the big problems people have is wanting to get that breath of air. The head should stay in the water almost LAST. In other words, keep your head down and therefore center of gravity low as possible as long as possible! :D

Just for the record, that is ROBERT GREER photo bombing my video, and CAJA ORMAN filming while he is laughing at Robert. It's a miracle that I am actually in the frame of the video.

I didn't go into all the other ways to roll an open boat that I have seen used in order to make this less confusing. This method can be physically easier than other methods if done correctly, and puts less stress on the shoulder, compared to a simple sweep or screw roll. It is the typical roll for a C-1 as well. I think it has been called the low brace flip roll.

MUCH less stressful on the shoulder! Thanks for the video!

Curious, would not a kayak reverse screw roll work just as well?

It is my favorite open canoe and is the most forgiving boat on the market. It looks a little like a big bathtub, but I don't get into how cool I look on the river.

Lets change the title to rolling a bathtub with airbags... A lot of fun.

What's your paddle? Looks nice. Would it be sold in Europe?

This title is deceptive. What you've done, to be able to " Roll An Open Boat" is to convert it into a specialized chambered boat, with the necessary foot and knee braces, sans a front and back deck. You converted it to special, closed, air chambered boat. Why don't you just come out and say the truth, It can't be Done.

Open boat is common terminology among whitewater boaters. This is what whitewater canoes look like. The presence of airbags doesn't mean it's not a canoe.

But why? Without airbags the boat sinks whether in whitewater or just the pool.

Still a canoe, which involves paddling from one's knees (vs butt) with a single blade. A canoe is an open boat. The air bags don't close the boat... They aren't decks, they merely displace water. Believe me, water still fills the boat, there is just less room for it. Btw, closed kayaks also have air bags, or should. It prevents pinning of the boat if the kayaker has to bail and swim.
