When people, (family, friends, neighbors) learn what I do it often turns into a situation where they “donate or gift” me items they don’t want to haul off to a thrift store or set up a yard sale.
I love church sales. After the pandemic, a couple churches in my small town went ahead and opened up full blown shops. They are not open every day but it is easy to memorize the schedule. These have been a huge, and regular, source of inventory for me. They typically have sales too when they are overrun with certain categories or at change of season. Bag sales are the best!
Holy hack! Thank you so much for that amazinggggg tip! I’m so glad I found your channel last month. I think I’ve watched the majority of your videos. I’m not much of commenter. In fact, I’m terrible at liking, commenting, or sharing. However, I will take this opportunity to tell you that nearly every video you’ve produced is chock full of very important nuggets of information. With the exception of you breathing (which it doesn’t seem you do often 🤷🏻♀️), it’s as if every second of each episode is pure reseller gold. So thank you! Seriously, you are my favorite youtuber and I truly wish you the best in your endeavors.
That video was FANTASTIC. Thank you for such a great channel! So funny. I am a casual sourcer. My mom was a hoarder so for right now, my sourcing is mostly coming from the garage. But I know some day that will run dry. But I have always loved loved loved a church sale! And you’re right. So hard to find. We have one, once a year in our small area.
My favorite so far is definitely of garage sales, as well as relationships with storage unit buyers. I haven't done any sourcing at flea markets or church sales yet.
I've given up on thrift stores and garage sales. I've been sourcing exclusively at online auctions. Just like your example of the hoarder house, you can get a ton of good inventory for next to nothing. Best are the auction houses that let you take what you want and leave the rest behind. I dropped $1400 on an entire attic full of stuff last week. Made my money back the next day selling 3 items almost instantly. Have about 200 more items I still need to list (I wont list unless I can get at least $20 + ship for an item). Will be a good money maker.
I still find tons of inventory at garage sales and Thrift stores. Those thrift stores think they are clever, but I know more than they do! Lol So I turn it into a game. Garage sales are always the most profitable for me.
Recently stumbled across your channel…it was like finding Arc’teryx at the thrift. 🎉 🍾 In fact, I consider you my ‘find of the year’. Your videos are thoughtful, informative AND entertaining. Liked, subscribed and looking forward to more great content.👌 Oh, and thrift stores are my primary/favorite source of inventory…just to keep my comment on theme.😊
Highest ROI by Source: 1. Church Sales 2. Online Sourcing 3. Garage Sales (Justin's Favorite way to source.) 4. Estate Sales (Justin goes on day two or three to get deeper discounts and avoid the fights) 5. Thrift Stores 6. Flea Markets 7. Pallets 8. Retail Stores
I bought a pallet of Nordstrom shelf pulls and and returns, it was LOVELY, however, yes a lot of work. Over 300 pairs not in boxes. The waste was low but LORD So many shoes!
My single best ROI came from an online auction. Seems like they used to be a really easy way to get good product but it seems like that ship has sailed. Now it seems that the competition is more fierce and ppl are willing to pay more than I want or what would be profitable on eBay
I went to a Goodwill Outlet where I had that feeling! 😵 But I powered through and when I checked out, I found out that regular price was $1.29 per lb., anything over 10 lbs. Was $1.09, and over 20 was $.99 a pound. I bought 40 pounds worth--worth the risk! 😏
Yes, I also love the church sales!! So much fun and I love the sweet people having the sales! The prices are right, and I get a lot of inventory at a time. I would be interested in learning about your tracking method/spreadsheet. I am enjoying your videos and learning a lot. Thanks!
You can get more info on how I track inventory in this video: ua-cam.com/video/Qmk1ephU6II/v-deo.html -- however, I am in the process of replacing this setup with an app that automates everything. I'll share more about it on the channel when it is done :)
I always forget to look for church sales! I did use your string and it worked pretty good; I believe you are correct, they don't do a good job of advertising and I just need to be more disciplined in driving my city! Thanks as always! I'd love to know more about how you track your sales as shown in this video. As a new eBay reseller, I'm already struggling with keeping track. I know you mentioned you were working on a software package, I'd love to be a beta tester. I might be a good candidate. Thanks, Annmarie
Yep, the screenshots at the beginning are from the app I'm in the process of building. It'll open up to beta users in October. If you'd like to sign up for access you can do so here: forms.gle/iMwZ2MwWJ2f7F68h7 Thanks for watching!
Another high quality video Justin!!! It’s like you read my mind, as I’ve been mulling over this exact topic for the past week! Wish there was an easier way to find the church sales and it seems like the area of the country one lives in makes a difference 🤔
I do the same thing when I am at a retail store. It is always fun to leave with items you Arbitrage that more than paid for every grocery or item in that cart by the time they sell.
another Great Video.. thank you again for taking the time to make these great informational videos. We all benefit from them. Love the List. it very much aligns with my methodology in sourcing. Keep up the Great WorkJustin. Very much appreciate you. all the best, Richard.
I've been keeping similar records and Church Sales are also at the top of my list too! I found all of them this summer by signs posted at the Post Office bulletin board in town. I never would have guessed that on-line sourcing could be so lucrative, though. I bid on an on-line auction for the first time this year, but shipping of my "wins" cost more than I paid for the items. I'm finally in the black on that purchase, but won't do it again unless I can pick-up in person.
Just happened up on your video - great job! Love how you talk fast, are very detailed and have graphics to show, well done! I subscribed and will definitely be back for more. I've been selling on Ebay for 22 years, sold 55K items and I've never experienced the slow down like I'm seeing now. I've experienced thousand dollar days and most recently days that I have no sales at all, 3 in a row to be specific. I just watched your video on promoted listings and I took your advice and promoted all my listings at 2%. I have almost 1300 items for sale and I'm wondering if you have any comments or suggestions on improving sales for upcoming October 2023.
Interesting analysis. I think the time component needs to be considered as well comparing your various sources and expenses (fuel/wear tear) should be considered as well.
You can see a video of my old method here: ua-cam.com/video/Qmk1ephU6II/v-deo.html -- I am in the process of building an app that automates the manual data entry shown in the video. If you're interested in getting access to an app like that, beta access will be available in October and you can sign up here: forms.gle/iMwZ2MwWJ2f7F68h7
There is also those YMCA or some kind of community center sale. I don't know who organizes it, but my city gym will hold a gym size garage sale thingy. I dont even know what to call it.
My most profitable places to source inventory are Goodwill Bin Stores and Amazon Return Bin Stores. I am lucky to have 2 bin stores and about 3 Amazon Bin Stores within a 20-mile radius. I do garage sales also but I don't do as well because many people go by eBay listing prices to price their items.
Your content looks really good and I would like to watch more of your videos. Every time I click on one it seems to take a Long time to get to the point. It's a me thing but I figured I would at least share my honest feedback. Anyways I will attempt to watch this in entirety. Thanks for the upload!
estate sales are a good one, but theres some bad. Like over in my area there was, (idk if hes still doing it, hes kinda why i stopped going to them after a few weeks of just seeing him), he was selling them for the estate, but what he was doing was over pricing everything he wanted to resell so its not really feasible to buy them as a visitor to the lot then after the end of the estate sale he would buy everything he wanted at a discounted rate while locking everyone else out of it. But i do 100% agree after that experience, private ones are way better
Hey Justin! I just wanted to let you know that you’re the most informative/helpful youtube reseller there is, by far! I feel like if I do most of these things you talk about I would have great numbers but my biggest gripe with reselling is, if I drive more than 30 minutes to get somewhere and leave empty handed, I get demoralized and I take a break from that type of sourcing, because of this I mostly just thrift and go to the flea market. Do you ever run in to this situation or am I just a cry baby? Thanks for the great videos!
Yes, not every day is a winner. It's easy to look at UA-camrs and see all their successes but what you don't see are the strike outs, because that doesn't create very compelling content. But yeah, I strike out regularly. I leave empty handed, buy stuff I shouldn't have, etc. Over time you get better of course and this happens less, but it still happens to the best of us! Keep grinding.
I have better luck at the Goodwill Outlets/bins than I do at the retail stores. Just this past week I have found turntables, skis, etc. that I have either already sold or am using for myself. I almost never find good quality versions of those in the retail stores. I think the reason I have better luck /at the outlets/bins is because they operate by regularly bringing out new tables piled with stuff. So, these pickers who go when the retail stores open don't necessarily have an advantage at the outlet/bins. I also enjoy the atmosphere there better. It's more of a treasure hunting experience to dig through a pile of random stuff and see valuable items. It's rewarding/fun for me just to treasure hunt. Finding a perfectly working $100 turntable is better than finding a gold nugget after standing out in the elements to pan for gold. 🙂 I wouldn't normally share my secrets with people but I feel a little altruistic if I can help other people go and save things from the landfill.
Canada's a bit different. I find Facebook and garage sales to be mostly a bust. People in my area would much rather donate than spend precious hours holding a garage sale that might net them minimum wage, and they're so spread out that the gas cost becomes a factor. Estate sales of the type you have in the US don't actually exist up here, so that's out. Thrift stores are meh. We have a couple of non chain ones we like, but they all now know how to do sold comps on eBay. Still, they're often the recipients of quirky and unusual things they know nothing about, so they're definitely worth the time. But my two top sources are online auctions and in person auctions. Yesterday I bought a $10 box lot with seven $20 items in it, and it was our worst outing so far. Church sales get a thumbs up from me too. Never know what you'll find. 😎
I do retail arbitrage I mostly sell clothing accessories Anthropologie type I'm in central Florida so outlet mall for Disney parks outlet and Disney World merchandise sell very well for me also universal Harry Potter and Halloween horror nights exclusive merch
Great video! Been following you for a couple of months and I really enjoy your content. Always really informative and of high value. When you refer to the ROI is that after paying eBay and shipping fees or before paying them? Just want to compare how am I doing as mine are at about 300% at maximum after fees and shipping.
Hmmm. Church sales in my area I've started to avoid. They are often by donation only. So unless I pick up something I know is an unknown bolo, chances are I'm going to donate more than what I would pay at a garage sale. Garage sales people are trying to get rid of stuff church sales are typically trying to make money. If it's not donation, then they are pricing things at checkout and if I'm only finding bread and butter, there's no way I'm getting a good deal. Most of the church inventory around here is pretty sad. But I had a huge score earlier this year ~ A large tub of wooden Thomas the Train. Luckily priced at $15 and since I was one of the first through the door I was able to score. I made that $15 back on just 1 engine. So I guess I'll keep haunting the church sales.
Living in NYC, my tag sales as we call garage sales are limited to the weather. The summer this year was dead. Hardly any sales. This weekend was rained out and next supposedly the same. Church sales are pretty much non-existent. I’ve been sourcing mostly online from auction houses, thrift stores would be my second choice although they are pretty expensive around me. I have to travel to LI to find decent prices.
Have you ever checked out the flea markets on the West Side (below midtown and in downtown)? Some can be pricey, but there's usually always some good bargains. Also, there is a Goodwill bins store in Queens - it's not for the faint of heart, but can be great for sourcing. People go with huge contractor bags tied to their waist and just scoop stuff out of the bins into the bags, hahaha. If you Google "Goodwill Outlet Queens" you'll find a few interesting articles about that location. I think one was from New York magazine.
Unfortunately, I don't love yard and garage sales. For one thing, I'm not a morning person and I enjoy sleeping in on Saturday mornings. I have gone to them later in the day however to see what 's left for a good price or even better - FREE. The other thing though is that I commonly find people are "angry" with me when I try to negotiate. Understandably so, they LIKE items they once purchased for themselves and they remember how much they paid. So when I offer very little, they are annoyed and frustrated and may make comments to that effect. It doesn't feel like a satisfying transaction. (Interestingly, I have experienced the other side of this as well. And it was disheartening to sell items I had thoughtfully purchased for my babies be nickel and dimed away from me for VERY LOW offers.Just put a bad taste in my mouth and made me sad.) I told the last lady that I was a reseller. I knew that was a risk but I felt she would relate in some ways. She did. But she still acted a little annoyed that "you got some good stuff." Like I got away with something. Yuck. That's not what I'm after. So far, I have gotten quite a few items from curbside boxes and piles and also from our town transfer station which has a FREE building. And when those items sell, I know it is almost ALL PROFIT - and no judgment. 🙂
Hi Jack, thanks for watching. I use an app that I am in the process of building that automates the inventory and sales data tracking. It's not ready for public consumption yet, but will be in October. I'll talk about it on the channel more when it is available. Thanks for watching!
SELL ME THE THING ALREADY! Lol thanks for taking the time. Love the entrepreneurship when you saw an opportunity you made your own app. I hope it pays off. Post a couple videos about it, I'm sure you will and I will be one of your first customers.@@justinresells
Hi, Justin! Just curious if you wait to sell seasonal items until closer to the season or if you list and have a decent STR no matter what time of the year you list the item?
Hi Justin - Another really good, insightful video - thanks for that. However, I think your math is off. You only have enough info on Estate Sales to check against, but you said you spent $2415 and made $13,157 - that would be an ROI (by my math, and I could be missing something) of 544%, not the 892% you cited. A number of the other categories seemed off to me too. Basically my math shows your spending an AVERAGE of right around $2 per item (even when I remove the online auctions, which you mentioned were quite low cost per item). That seems too low for an average. Anyway, I’m interested to hear if spending an average of $2 to source items and selling at an average of $18-$20 sounds right to you. That’s def way higher average returns than I’ve ever heard of or seen before. Thanks.
@@justinresells we don't go there ever week but we are there frequently. we have never been to the auction but would like to do it one day. it is kinda hard to be a reseller in the lou but with good videos like yours it is a little easier
What applications do you use to keep track of your earning, expenses, ROI ect.? i use an excel spreadsheet but i want something better. Great video btw
Thanks for watching. I use an app that I built that automatically ingests all of the data from eBay directly so no manual data entry is needed. I'll be opening it up to other people soon. If you're interested you can sign up for access here: forms.gle/WzWvSHaw4pMsN5vj8
Hello I was looking at Airtable and got overwhelmed even getting started. Do you have a blank template you could share or a good place to get started? I would like to better track everything. Thanks
Video Games are the low hanging fruit of reselling. Everyone is aware of them (including the sellers allot of times) so they are the first things people look for. What is helping me expand out my sourcing was watching picking videos of other resellers. Part Time Pickers and Flipping Junk are a couple of non click baity channels that focus on finding stuff at garage sales and thrift stores. They give you an idea of what to look for.
Hi! I have a very basic question- does scheduled listing one item per day same as keep them in the draft and manually list them one per day? In other words, Will the eBay algorithm think I am listing one per day with scheduled listing?
I do sometimes negotiate at garage sales but it depends. Sometimes you have a sort of instant rapport with the host where haggling feels natural and welcome. Other times the interactions are more cold and it just feels a bit icky to negotiate. Most times the prices are so low anyway and I am going to make a large enough profit that I have no issue paying the asking price. Thanks for watching :)
"this embarrasses my kids so it's a double win" lol.
Lol, I caught that too 😂❤️🔥👩🌾
When people, (family, friends, neighbors) learn what I do it often turns into a situation where they “donate or gift” me items they don’t want to haul off to a thrift store or set up a yard sale.
same!
So much great information here. You’re one of the best on UA-cam in this category. Thanks for being so open about what you’re doing and why.
Been selling online (clothing) 5 yrs. Love your method of presentation, and find your content straight forward and valuable!!!
In my experience, clothing is very hard to sell online. Idk why the category is so slow

Yes, ROI is the net return (gross sale amount minus all fees including shipping) divided by the investment (cost of goods)
Ebay is really in a rut it seems right now.
My sales went from daily to absolutely nothing all weekend.
✅✅✅🙌🏼 Love the Data 🤓
What kind of items you selling on ebay?
Anything that looks good...clothes, hard goods, costume jewelry.@@theboringchannel2027
I like your content, you're channel will do well
Hey Justin. This content is amazing. Can you tell me which soft ware you use to track inventory and sales performance?
Thanks.
Hey, you're right, I had the wrong net total for Estate Sales. I had a net of $19,168 not $13,157. Average COGS for estate sales is right around $3.
Your local Sunday flea market wouldn't happen to be the VFW Hall on Lemay Ferry, would it?
that’s the one!
@@justinresells we don't go there ever week but we are there frequently. we have never been to the auction but would like to do it one day. it is kinda hard to be a reseller in the lou but with good videos like yours it is a little easier
nice! i haven’t been to the auction either, only flea market
Hello
I was looking at Airtable and got overwhelmed even getting started. Do you have a blank template you could share or a good place to get started? I would like to better track everything. Thanks
By the way I love the videos
"Sometimes I feel like I might get stabbed" 😅
IF your items SELL!!! Ebay has been terrible for me. Hardly any sales.
My roi is around 50-100% I feel like I could be sourcing the wrong things. I mostly focus on video games.
@@insomnia333 thanks so much for the reply! helps a ton!
That feeling like you might get stabbed is part of the spice and grit of the flea market 😅
Hi! I have a very basic question- does scheduled listing one item per day same as keep them in the draft and manually list them one per day? In other words, Will the eBay algorithm think I am listing one per day with scheduled listing?
Tough to say! My guess is that scheduling them is the same as manually listing them from the algorithm's perspective.
Embrace the garage sale haggle!
