    Please send this back to 1982. We needed it.

      We had Adventure, and Indiana Jones and others.
      This would have been a standout title for sure, but we had some fantastic games back then.
      But... I think this is a 32K rom, it wouldn't have mattered anyway, it would have been very expensive.
      Pitfall for example was 1982 - and 4k
      Also, in 1982, there was so much shovelware around, the true gems had a tough time shining through.

    This would have been incredible back in the day. Hard to believe just how in depth this is on a 2600

    I think recreating the layout of the map verbatim was a big ask for the 2600 so the developer had to take some liberties. Still, this is impressive.

      Yea, I really wish I could use more colors on the overworld, but there's just not enough CPU to update the playfield color and not enough memory to unroll the world view kernel... and if I did unroll the kernel then I'd have to spend more CPU time updating enemy sprites since the world kernel sits in an extended ram chip since it's faster to load data from a fixed address over an indirect one.
      Also this is a much more incomplete version of the game, so there are some changes that each room looks more distinct and complete, especially in that forest area near Level 2. No more rooms with that pattern of diamond squares or overworld rooms with black playfields.
      A little tidbit on how the game works, the game is broken down into three "worlds" (overworld, levels 1-6, levels 7-9), where a single world consists of 128 rooms. The data for each room is only 8 bytes (or 1 KB per world), while the basic sprite lookup information is only 16 bits. The left and right side of a room can only reference 16 different 8 by 16 sprites, while the center can reference mirrored versions of the first 16 sprites plus an extra 16 center room sprites; the center sprite is also always duplicated and mirrored. In the version played, I only used a single 1KB memory bank for room sprite data, but since have bumped it up to two banks (one overworld, one underworld) since like you can see when he wanders into the south-east forest area there isn't enough sprites to make each room distinct enough. Then there is a 2 pixel thick border that is configured depending on the edge pixels of the entire room sprite plus what I call door flags and wall flags that allow for different room exit configurations.

      @@mzxrulesLooks great! Remember you can flicker the 0missile too so Link can still shoot and swing at full hearts. Also a knockback can still be added which would make it feel super authentic. You can also flicker TRI copies of sprites. Not sure how much graphic memory you have left. Anyways awesome job!

      You used to be able to order one from Atari Age, but since Atari bought the site, I don't think they provide this service anymore. Your best bet is emulation with Stella, or buy a Harmony Cart and load the rom onto it to play in a 2600.

    • @provisionalhypothesis
      @provisionalhypothesis 4 місяці тому

      @@brianmulligan5956 yeah they don't. there's a couple multicart options that even work on a 2600+, like dragonfly, but they're also not available and super rare. Unless you play it on an OG 2600 via Harmony cart (harmony cart is very limited on 2600+ to 4k games on an sdcard one at a time) you're probably doomed to play this on rom on a handheld device. Since I enjoy the crisp output of 2600+ I can't go back to using my original 2600 anymore, so it's definately sad. But also, nintendo will probably not allow this if it gets a real release, so yeah. doomed. double doomed as I doubt a real cart would even dump on 2600+, they only just got DPC+ supported. Moot point tho. I'll play it on Miyoo mini plus I guess.

      It's currently being developed for a 64 KB cart with extra ram banks. This particular build was in the 33 KB range but it's now currently up to 52 KB, thought there's lots of unutilized gaps.
