Really enjoyed this episode. One of my favorite movies of all time. I consider it a masterpiece of a film. I agree with both of you guys on some of the deleted scenes that were put back into the Directors Cut of the film that actually help the film like Lambert slapping Ripley and the infamous Cocoon scene. Great discussion!
I saw this theatrically with my father around the 4th of July, 1979 at the El Dorado theater in Tucson, AZ. I remember the marquee advertising "70 mm Dolby Stereo," which of course I didn't really understand at the time. It was a month before my tenth birthday. I knew this was not going to be a fun ride when the credit sequence began, those letters slowly forming across the width of that huge, curved screen. I kept having to go the bathroom I was so scared, and I would peek in the window in the door to see what was going on. The chest-burster scene was the final straw; I stood up and told my father we had to leave, I couldn't watch the rest. He didn't let me live it down for years. When I saw the whole film on capacitance disc 3 or 4 years later and loved it...and still do. Ten year-old me, not so much.
It really is a fantastic movie but I gotta say.... I don't know your dad but to first take a ten year old then to make fun of the fact that he was scare? That seems like a lot.
Doing a re listen of the alien, aliens podcast before Romulus. So excited for it be avoiding as many trailers as I could after that first teaser. Great episode this is one I would like to come back and do a more in depth look. This needs a two part episode.
The only Alien movie I care about. Great film, and I'm not a horror fan. I was surprised that you guys didn't mention how much the movie is reversing the classic horror female rape tropes and subverting them by turning them around into this ultimate fear for men (pregnancy/etc). Not light subject matter at all and it is a really interesting & definite take to immediately confront the primary audience for the film in such a direct way. It is a game changer for sure. I would also love to hear your reactions to John Hurt's quotes about why Robert De Niro would win for Raging Bull over his turn in John Merrick in The Elephant Man. I thought John Rocha was going there, but it wasn't mentioned. Hurt talked about it on The Elephant Man interviews/extra content on that DVD. Also a great film.
Part 4 of my Cine-Files Halloween-athon. If it counts, this is my all time favorite horror film. If it doesn't...well, Paranormal Activity is over 10 years old now right?
@42:10 "it's almost chauvinistic" Again with the sexism thing! What is with this guy and his need to see sexism in everything? Nearly every podcast he's like "because he's a man" "masculinity" blah blah, it's getting tiresome!

Thanks Justin
My first Cine-Files listen. Very good!

Ooooh, I would so love a Cine-Files episode on "The Elephant Man."
5 star movie, 5 star review

H.R. Giger at Lomex Gallery, NYC though March 12, 2022
If I could put down 5 star rating, I would on UA-cam. But I guess a like should do.
No, Alien is not the first "fourth act movie". The James Bond franchise has done this stuff since the 60s.
