Bo Ek Listen to the Shortest Straw Solo again. I'm not saying you have bad taste but that solo is awesome. Pinch harmonics, natural harmonics...it has a lot of techniques used in it.
av3nger3 My personal favorite is Disposable Heroes. It sounds the coolest to me, and ive heard guitar players bag on it for being too ADD, but I think its awesome how the drums are the instrument that kind of transitions between sections.
How can there be 229 dislikes to this video? It just Proves that there are haters and trolls just to embellish in hating and trolling. This video is Brilliant and awesome to watch and learn. Great Job, Sir.
WOW! One of the best covers I've seen of this song. And one of the only covers to play that crazy reversed intro at the beginning. Not even Metallica plays that intro at shows lol
Wow ! This cover song is so well played, The harmonick part at the beginning is so sickly well decomposed, i never new how they made the intro sound like that. Awesome job !
The beginning of Blackened, on the album, is actually; 1) A short passage that they recorded 2) Flipped it in reverse (backwards) 3) Used it like that to fade into the beginning of the song On this vid, he's just showing how you could play along to it in real time. But the real beginning you're hearing on the album, is in reverse (backwards).
dude i wish i could like your comment a million times! seriously. After watching a "POV" guitar video like this, its so much easier to actually see whats being played! Loved it! Picked up my ltd explorer and shredded that solo very easily! My problem is finger placement and when to bar stuff or not. So I kind of suck at soloing. But this is sweet and helpful!
Trust me, Blackened will feel like slow motion when you get a hang of the rhythmic anomalities, no matter how fast you play it. Been thinking about making a vid where I'd throw in a suggestion on how to perceive the rhythm in those anomalous rhythms, the idea being to give a full idea of what's going on - when you know all those quirks, it's only a matter of filling them with notes. I wouldn't so much teach how to play it - this video does it. :) Instead, show how to perceive it.
you sir are a god... I've played in a Metallica tribute band for 3 years and I try my BEST to be as note for note as possible... but this is 100% accuracy! All 6:34 was a pleasure to watch!
4:00 - 4:20 I'm sure I hear a third, rhythmic guitar part in the background, unless its just the bass, but if it is it's just about the only bass part in the entire album they left audible
very well done! Its also the first time I have seen the "POV" used which makes it nice. To those who say "you are playing it wrong blah blah blah..." use these tutorials as a guide and not necessarily a note for note transcription. I find lots of "mistakes" in books all the time but just play the song the way you hear it and use these lessons to fill in the parts you need. Simple, and no one gets hurt.
They don't...especially Lars. My friend and I both left the last show of theirs that we saw about halfway through, mostly because it sounded like a shitty cover band.
When I hear new Metallica music, it sounds like a band that wants to sound like Metallica. The lyrics just make me cringe and they have some cool riffs, but the songs aren't the same.
Dang it boy, you played this as the studio version. I don't even think Metallica can come that close on their own riffs. Well played JamPlay, well played.
I've heard that the intro was actually played, then put in reverse, but I have seen videos similar to this that actually play it through like it sounds in reverse. This is an incredible video. Very informative. It's kind of cool that you turned down the distortion so we can clearly hear the guitars!
2:42 My favorite part from the song. This is also a very neat camera angle you have here. I've never seen it from this perspectrive and it really helps versus watching somebody mirrored.
It took some getting used to to learn the song from this camera angle. Usually I like the straight front shots, but after a few minutes, I think this camera angle works really well too. Gosh it's fast. I play blues rock, classic stuff so this is working my forearm on my picking hand big time. Thanks!!
The top down view is awesome! You get the players viewpoint instead of the observers' viewpoint. The split screen is genius as well. Solid rhythm guitar, and the leads sounded as if Kirk had played them himself. One thing missing, there is a 3rd guitar playing rhythm during the 2 guitar part melody/harmony just before the guitar solo. E5-D5-C5-B5 in 4/4 & 2/4 time respectively. But overall this is one of the best 'how to play it' videos. Good work.
Super cool and trippy to see both your hands doing the exact same thing in both clips, especially the right hand!! It looks like it's the same clip duplicated. That's some consistency right there
I was always a bit afraid of this song...but after seeing this video I decided to learn it. It takes time but it is possible :-). The key thing is to start slow and learn it 100%...then build up the speed. All the down picking is the hard part...your arms will be sore but only for a short time. Today I can play it 2-3 times in a row without problems and I am nothing more than a average player. And now when I master this one..many of the other Metallica songs are much easier to play.
Jason had a cassette tape that he put he's baselines and base riffs and stuff on like all the others did. And Jason put he's on and James heard this riff, but it was a lot more articulate then the riff in the song there's a video on UA-cam with Jason talking about it. But Jason got writing credit in the guitar tab book.
It's supposed to be this way. The studio version hasn't been perfectly mixed so everyone is used to listen this song without the bass. Well, I think this is better 😊
IMO, the production on the "And Justice" album is so dry and harsh, they managed to make incredible metal songs like this into a painful listening experience.. But this vid cleanly exposes the beautiful guitar work underneath the grating and abrasive sound of the studio cut.. It's like hearing a whole new song! And it's fucking awesome! If only the production values of the first 4 albums had lived up to the quality of the music.. it really is a fucking shame. They should have re-recorded everything in the early 90's before James' voice peetered out.
Great demonstration... but on the record there's not such "Kirk Hammett" rhythm guitar. All rhythm, melodic and harmony guitars are played by James. Therefore, you should name guitars as James 1, James 2, James 3 and so on.
How is that possible what you wright?? When they make a Live Concert, there is only 1 James on Stage. And the Songs Sound Live pretty much like the Studio Versions.
Karl S. But this is not a live version: it's the studio version. Before the Black album, James recorded all harmony and rhythm guitars. So no Kirk there. It's, as I stated before, James 1, James 2 and so on. Also, live versions almost always lack of one guitar that puts lots more depth to the whole song. Just listen carefully.
aruizislas I know what you mean. When i seach for Tabs on Songster ist always like, James 1, James 2... But i never undertod whats the Point behind that. I was always thinking that the early Live Versions Sound better that the Studio Versions.
I understand what you're saying. However, what I'm playing here (and teaching in the lesson) is based on how they divided parts live- so the top video really IS what Kirk has played (which, except for certain harmonies and the solo, is mostly right in line with James). And of course they typically don't bother performing the intro, that's just a track. The idea I'm going for is for anyone in a 2-guitar band to accurately recreate what Metallica do live, since in some of their recorded songs there are so many guitar parts it can be hard to decide what to leave out when performing
+Krzysztof Urban they still play it backwards live right! so not pointless at all pure genius on newsteds part all credit due to him and his ideal also to reverse it
it IS played backwards on the recording, but the story is they recorded it like normal and Jason suggested reversing it. There are recordings of it re-reversed (i.e., like they recorded it) on UA-cam and I learned from that, then practiced it like I played it here. One of the camera guys suggested we do it the way we did because he saw a Metallica tribute do it live and thought it sounded cool.
Damn, never have i thought that the upside down version of guitar lesson is more pleasing to watch.....but this song is one hell of a thing.....difficult.....and that downpicking is sick! Awesome editing and playing!!

You jerk, I nearly swallowed my tongue. Sounded like a fricken dying duck.

Kirk down picks as well though.
