That’s really frustrating Alex! I haven’t ever bought a Doctor Who bootleg but a few months ago I bought Gravity Falls the complete series DVD and I’m 99% sure it’s a bootleg. Luckily the seller who had no idea offered me a full refund to send back or a partial refund to keep so I went with a partial refund so I could keep it as a ‘placeholder’ until I track down an official copy. The signs were that all of the artwork on the DVDs, the box and the inserts were all a lot darker the promo pics and in unboxings I’ve seen, the other was that the box was one of the more flimsier boxes and in unboxings I’ve seen, they all have a much sturdier box and also that in pics and unboxings, the discs all come in clear cases and mine came in black ones. Great video and that must be really disappointing 👍😭

It’s a fantasy adventure animated series. It’s pretty highly regarded. It’s like stranger things crossed with the x files for kids!
Aw no that sucks :( I think the best advice to avoid bootlegs is to search up reviews on UA-cam before purchasing (I often have to do that with Scooby-Doo releases xD) Thank you for sharing! It was kind of you to use the experience to help others :)

Great video! Once Vegas stars working again, I’d love to see a comparison of the video on this with the video from the official release. We have no idea if these just come from the DVD or from the TV! I’ve never had a bootleg Doctor Who DVD but would be interested in getting one. I love that kind of thing

The Doctor Who Guide You could use something like MakeMKV to rip the DVDs on your computer and show us (only small snippets because we don’t want a copyright strike) how clear it is, if it’s just a copy of the official DVDs or if it’s copied from the TV etc. Basically just a more in-depth review/deeper look

I will just say the theme tune instead the best boxset that you can buy for doctor who ( holds up the lost in time boxset)

Price is a indicator also for bootlegs DVDs, especially for box sets like Doctor Who. $18 DW sets directly from Asia are too good to be true.
Sometimes, "too good to be true" is the best indicator. This set was shipped to me from the US, Indiana, I believe, but even so, I should've known by the price. I think I really wanted to believe in officially manufactured red velvet interiors. 😅
A new part of Alex P collection grows.. he now collects the bootleg Doctor Who DVD’s! Soon he will have a whole shelf of them!!!

i have had some bootlegs before and i was really angry and the funny thing is i had a series 1-3 bootleg and it had the discs like you're one but had the ninth doctor, the 10th doctor, rose and martha on it but i will see you later for the stream
I think I may have seen something like that at some point on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. I don't mind the design of it! 😃
I am sorry to hear about your experience. All of my DVD’s are US editions (region one). I think they are all genuine. Some of them are DVD-R’s, but they are reissues of DVD’s that are out of print. The sound and picture quality is about the same as the older DVD’s. I bought them from Amazon and BBC Shop, and they are trustworthy. Some of them came from eBay, but I always check the seller’s reputation and I will always buy from sellers inside the USA.

I have to say, I really like the cover art for that set, it's a shame it's a bootleg, though. There's another channel I saw a while back with videos about bootlegs of the boxsets of doctor who, which was quite interesting, they were R1 sets, I think, but there were lots of little telltale signs, some of which were kind of baffling, like typos in the episode titles on the discs, when the disc art was copied, how did they end up with things like "ride of the gybermen" on them. That was actually on one of the discs. Worth looking those up, for sure, pretty interesting.

Very interesting looking boxset! Back when Series 8 came out I bought it via eBay. I ended up with a bootleg sadly. A very convincing one - you'd never know just by looking at it. All the disc artwork was correct, it came with the slipcase and everything. However, the picture quality was noticeably poorer than I expected, quite pixelated and occasionally juddery. Comparing it to my official copy of the Deep Breath dvd it was very obvious.
Thankfully I've managed to get an official one now!

I had the same problem with a series 4 set! I ordered it from the Amazon marketplace while staying in England a few years back. It's pretty subtle, but like this set, has some really unusual (but interesting) packaging.

I've wound up with a few bootlegs over the years, typically stuff that was either long out of print and thus stupid expensive on the used market for the real thing (if you could even find it) or had never actually been officially released at the time I bought it. My old bootleg Samurai Pizza Cats DVDs that were obviously cobbled together from old off-air VHS recordings got replaced with the legit release right away when a legit release became available, and I've actually held onto my old Ranma 1/2 bootleg DVD sets even after picking up the legit Blu-ray releases because the particular bootleg sets I have actually look really nice on the shelf. In general I much prefer to avoid bootlegs wherever possible, but if something's out of print or not readily available to purchase in a way that actually supports the creators then I'll take what I can get.
That's a good way to look at it, John! A placeholder until the official release comes out! I do enjoy the design of this set, so I don't mind it as much as when you've thought you ordered the official release and get a lookalike bootleg!
Who Crew! That's interesting that you found this. The only bootlegs I've had encounters with are lego. Robot and Meglos DVDs were in the whole video too 😎. Its so cool seeing that text making it's way into videos now as well!

I don't quite know why. But growing up I always found bootlegs of series 1 and The Christmas Invasion going around at local car boot and bring and buy sales. Most of the time they were very low quality, not exactly much effort was put into them. Luckily I have never had experience with them, but one of my friends bought one and we immediately tried it out. It was slightly laughable. Don't know why, but it would cut halfway through the episode into The Muppet's Wizard of Oz. If you are buying a used dvd that you think may be a bootleg. Always check the spelling on both the cover art and the discs. It usually is a big giveaway. So make sure your disc says (for example) "Last of the Time Lords" and not "Kast of the Time Loros"

China is not remotely interested in enforcing copyright control regarding non-Chinese material. Their shops are full of rubbish like this. On the plus side they are usually DVDs rather than DVD-R, contain direct ports of other regions legal releases meaning the A/V is usually good and of course by western standards they are cheap. Still wouldn't buy them though.

Some people have said that the original DVD's are better than DVD-R's, although I can't see much difference between them The picture and sound quality are about the same on my 40-inch screen. DVD's that are out of print are often very expensive, and purchasing the reissues can save money. If the DVD-R's come from a good source I think they are fine. A larger screen might show more of a difference, but I am quite satisfied with the reissues.

That's a pretty bootleg though. Lol. The artwork looks better than the official season 2 DVD. Plus, that red velvet inside looks dope contrasting the TARDIS blue. I wouldn't be embarrassed getting that in the mail.
Funnily enough, my season 2 DVD is bootleg as well (got a season 1-4 set which was pretty much all bootleg I think). The actual discs had the episode titles misspelled and they wouldn't work at all in some DVD players, but worked just fine in others. It was strange, but when it worked, it worked just fine. Now I have the David Tennant Blu Ray which I mentioned in a livestream, but I still have the bootleg DVDs.

The Doctor Who Guide I’d love to show you as well, but I’m not at home anymore. I moved into my dorm room last week. I’m a college boi now. Lol
If you want the whole collection for cheap there is, on Amazon.com, the Doctor Who: The Christopher Eccleston & David Tennant Collection, Matt Smith Collection and Peter Capaldi Collection. They're both DVD and Blu-ray editions. You get every episode, christmas, easter episode and behind the scenes. For me it is the cheapest version I could find. They might be for region 1 but you can watch them on your computer because the DVD players for computers don't have region restrictions, only a video program does (VLC program is region free). Also region free DVD player for cheap you can buy from Aliexpress. I did and it plays great. Side note: this official release I mentioned does have the same picture on the discs, of course it differs in colors depending on the collection of the doctor. You can check the pictures on BBC shop america or Amazon.com. Besides the moment I saw the Chinese writing I could tell it is a bootleg, there is a higher chance for that if they're Chinese releases.

I just received 4 separate bootleg DVD-R sets from Best Buy of all places. I went to watch the Ambassadors of Death and the Dvd looked bluish and didn’t think of it. I put in my blu ray player. And loaded ok but when I stopped it said DVD-R. Then looked at packaging. It is a copy supposedly from 2019. I have contacted Best Buy to tell them to pull them but not sure they will or not. Very frustrated.
Hello, Eric! Those aren't bootlegs, I'm afraid. They are official re-releases made on DVD-Rs. The original DVDs went out of print and got rare, so they started re-releasing some Classic DVDs in 2019 and 2020. They've done about 60 so far. I don't think Best Buy will pull them because they're technically legit. Sorry to hear you had a frustrating experience with these re-releases! 🙁
@@TheDoctorWhoGuide Wow. That seems quite lazy on BBC. They are not even up to the quality of original releases. It’s not fair to the buyer in my opinion. I am still going to return them and I guess take my chances on secondary market with original DVDs. Thanks for the information.

I have! It's a simple menu, but it has all the episodes on it! Two per disc! And they play! 😃
