  • Marcus and Jonathan arrive at their 2021 Montana deer camp. Setting up and getting some chores done is first on the menu. This year Marcus invited a few of his friends to join! Montana is unique in the fact that you can hunt rutting deer during the general rifle season. The guys see plenty of deer the first morning and get a crack at an old buck in the late afternoon!

    Really like how much you talked about the skyline and having no shot. I've seen some videos where guys just sent it. Hard to control that, but super important. Had to say something, just don't see it often and it's good to see with the influx of new hunters and reminders never hurt anyone. Also good on you guys for targeting the possibly sick deer, very ethical decision. Maybe he was septic?

    Man, he stopped at 240 and looked at you guys for a long time.
    But the buck you got was heavy and mature. Good shooting and quick processing in the field. They taste better after a long pack out

    The first time I hunted mulies was in 2007 outside Melstone MT on a bison ranch. We sat on a rocky outcrop, glassing, and identified deer as we saw them by their relationship to "the tree". We could see for miles...one tree.

    Missed shot opportunities happen to everyone. Wonder how many are due to “dialing” scopes? I’m a big fan of simple scopes and reticles for hunting.

      @86mhayez 2 роки тому +2

      I was thinking the same thing!
      Most rifles are bore sighted at 100 or 200 yards and a bullet drops 1” or 2”
      A 240 yard shot could be doable with just the reticle. But either was not shooting gave them more great hunting content. Great job 🤠

    • @moneyandtimefreedom3352
      @moneyandtimefreedom3352 2 роки тому

      Agreed most guns shoot flat enough and most shots happen under 300 yrds that you don’t need all the custom turrets and charts. I had an old guy asked me if I was in a competition or trying to kill the deer/ elk. 1 or 2 inches under 300 won’t make a difference how dead the animal is.

      A lot. I use 2.5-10x50 or 3-9x44/50 scopes. 33 years of hunting, have never need a target or tactical scope. I know the MPBR of each caliber/bullet combo I own.
      A good rangefinder, and boom.

    My pup likes to roll and rub on her antler chews, so I always cut the tips off quite aways down, and smooth down the edges. First time I stepped on one, I sure was glad I did!

    That Jerusalem cricket is a rare and cool find as they are nocturnal underground dwellers.
    I’m curious, is it common to feel the need to dial in the scope when a small hold higher would be quicker and easy in an urgent situation?

    • @Deerslayer1912
      @Deerslayer1912 2 роки тому

      Leupold doesn't offer much for reticles that are designed for holds. Usually if it has dials, there are no vertical stadia markings. At least thats how it was the last few times I have looked at their scopes.

    Great hunt and a great deer. Marcus is turning into a great host. That other deer with the buck you shot looked like it was still in velvet. Could it have been an antlered doe? They don't have the inclination to rub the velvet off as bucks do.

      That was my thought, I have seen that many times. We have deer that stay around our house and in the winter we watch them through the down stairs window. It is sometimes possible to see ticks on the nose and even ears.

    Love the video. I am all about being safe and taking your time but more and more I’m seeing in these videos where the Hunter is committed to taking a specific animal and they wait until they are in place to load the firearm then it’s a big rush to load, get a range and get on the animal. Bad things happen when you rush, misses, wounded animals or you totally miss your opportunity . If you’ve made the decision to shoot an animal and are in the final yards of the stalk why isn’t your gun loaded and ready? As you see in this video he missed out on the first deer, you can here the round being chambered as the deer is just standing there. Then he walks off while your trying to rush to get on him. Don’t get me wrong I love what you guys are doing just a question. Stay safe.

    • @snakeriverscotto
      @snakeriverscotto 2 роки тому +1

      It’s due to all the legal requirements for getting hunting content on air. Didn’t Randy fire on an empty chamber last year or the year before? Lol, that would get my heart rate up. Great comments here.

    • @JarvisOutdoors
      @JarvisOutdoors 2 роки тому

      Thanks for the info. Good to know, that makes sense with how restrictive they can be on content. Stay safe.

    • @scbane
      @scbane 2 роки тому +1

      I have seen enough that I do NOT carry a round in the chamber while hunting. Dropped a ruger M77 on rockslide, sling slid off my shoulder. Bounced and fired. Safety was on when I picked it up. None of us were hurt, unless you count hearing loss.
      I won't even walk with other guys tthat chamber a round, I don't care how responsible they are.

    • @JarvisOutdoors
      @JarvisOutdoors 2 роки тому

      Totally get not walking around on a loaded chamber especially in rough terrain. My question was more for “I’m on my shooting sticks ready to go and the deer is standing broad side at 100 yards now let’s load the gun” glad everyone in your hunting party was safe I am sure that was extremely scary.
