  • Based on the 1993-1995 British crime drama "Cracker," starring Robbie Coltrane as criminal psychologist (or "cracker") Dr. Edward "Fitz" Fitzgerald, this American series starred Robert Pastorelli as the slightly renamed criminal psychologist Gerry "Fitz" Fitzgerald. The ABC-TV show also starred Angela Featherstone as Fitz's colleague (and lover), Detective Hannah Tyler. Sadly, the U.S. version lasted only 16 episodes--and very dark episodes they were. It was broadcast as "Cracker" in the States, but when it was exported to Britain it was renamed "Fitz" (presumably in order that it not be confused with the Coltrane drama).

Looking into this, it was mostly a rewriting of the UK episodes.
The reason why Lt Fry is replaced later is because R Lee Ermey was intended to be short term and contracted for it, as James Sadwith was to write him out like Christopher Eccleston, whose character Ermey's was based on.
Clearly the network, ABC, or Robert Pastorelli, found out and protested. So Fry was spared, with him moving to a new position in the LAPD. Ermey's exit got written for Angela Featherstone instead, with the Robert Carlyle character changing gender.

All done with the best intentions and I like the actors, especially Robert Pastorelli. But I just don't rate it as high as the UK version, which was awesome.
