I watched Hidden City recently. It fits in with many of Poliakoff’s films, having a straightforward set up with something mysterious and/or hidden going on as well. He likes the multi-layered dramatic possibilities that follow on. It’s why I really enjoy his work. It’s not everyone’s cup of latte I know, but if it’s yours, it’s worth getting.
I’m a huge fan of Billy Connolly so will get his release, for sure. BFI have some good releases at the moment and coming up, too. Thanks, Elliot!
First film my dad ever rented back in 1979 when we had our first video recorder was Billy Connelly Bites Yer Bum!
Love hearing stories like this!
Big Banana Feet sounds fascinating along with the story of it being restored from obscurity. Reminds me of another recent BFI release called 23 Seconds To Eternity which was the entire catalog of The KLF’s short films and music videos which had all been previously unavailable for so long.
I haven’t got 23 Seconds To Eternity yet - thanks for the recommendation. I’ll seek it out :)
got both titles, and I'm very excited to soon have the Blu-ray of Remembrance next month. Also pre-ordered The Music Lovers and Heavenly Pursuits. We are so lucky to have BFI here in the UK.
I can't wait for all of the above! This is one of the best times to be a film lover, that's for sure.
It's pretty handy having it on the intertubes so I can access those same films from Australia that I couldn't otherwise.
Hadn't heard of these films either, so glad there are labels like Criterion, Arrow Video and BFI that can broaden our horizons like this and introduce new and older cinema and make new perspectives available. Especially when films thought to be lost forever. Hadn't heard of Billy before but seems very interesting, especially since it cover not just him but the tension of that time so will most probably get that one at least! Thanks for a great video!
Thank you as always Linou!
Will check hidden city, for your description sounds like Under the silver lake, which I love
It certainly fits in that category of story but I’d say Hidden City is played more straight and much less stylised than Under the Silver Lake (which I also love!)
BFI is also releasing an important japanese film Floating Clouds on Blu-ray on July 1st.
Yes I can’t wait! We’ve been needing Naruse films on Blu-ray for some time.
Hidden City sounds very fascinating. I've added it to my (ever growing) Watchlist.
Shocked to see that it doesn't even have enough views on Letterboxd to garner an actual score even. Very underseen.
Just a question, not really related to this particular video. I'm looking to upgrade from the 70th Anniversary Edition of Citizen Kane (the WB one with the attached photo booklet and the DVD of The Battle Over Citizen Kane) but I'm unsure of which of the newer restorations I should choose. Or should I just stay with this edition? I'm currently stuck at home due to an injury, and I'm a little tired of just watching UA-cam. Can you help?
Hi Rick. There’s very little difference in the presentation of Criterion’s 4K and WB’s 4K of Citizen Kane as they’re sourced from the same restoration. Either purchase is a good one so I suppose it comes down to your personal preference with packaging and extras. I hope that helps!
@@ElliotCoen The 70th doesn’t seem to be 4k. The reason I’m unsure is that when I recently upgraded from the old (really old) DVD of The Roaring Twenties, the Ultra HD version was cloudy and pretty much unwatchable, but the accompanying Blue-Ray was excellent. Also, the Ultra HD of the Universal Dracula was so black that it’s hard to see the lighter shades at all, but once more, the Blue-Ray is fine. I’m starting to think that even with a brand new 55” 4K Samsung TV, I need to just stick with Blue-Ray
Thanks
does the Billy Connolly film have subtitles? not kidding.
Yes it does.
