After the Battle of the Bands, many of the members of the FAMU and ASU marching bands had some fun dancing to DJ music: • FAMU & ASU at AACSA's ...
The African American Community Service Agency (AACSA) of San Jose (www.sjaacsa.org/) has produced the San Jose Juneteenth celebration for many years, the one on June 15, 2024 being the 41st overall and the 2nd of hopefully many years to come of having an HBCU marching band (or two) come to San Jose for the celebration. See my recording of FAMU at the 40th Juneteenth in San Jose here: • FAMU The Marching 100 ...
I am just a spectator who is not involved in the production of the event (other than being a Lifetime Legacy member of the AACSA to support their good works). When recording, as a tall person I try to be respectful of other spectators around me by not blocking their view. Also, I like to see the differnt faces and hear closely each instrument of each band member, especially when they are doing some moves. So, I apologize for not always being in the best location for sound quality, my intent in recording was only to capture the joy of the event while not getting in other people's way, not to try get the best sound quality.
I am an alumnus of San Jose State University (SJSU) which is just a few blocks from where this battle occurred on South First Street in downtown San Jose. I assume to keep travel shipping costs lower, Alabama State University borrowed some large instruments from SJSU which is why the logo on the bass drum matches my UA-cam avatar. Milan R. Balinton, the Executive Director of the AACSA as well as many who have worked at and are working at the AACSA are alumni or students of SJSU, so there is a good connection between these two local institutions.
Thanks for the footage… Excellent idea to add another band… I’m loving how the FAMU-ASU connection has been rekindled. 🐍🐍🐍 These kids are traveling!!!
The Bands Sound Totally Awesome 👏🏽 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽! I ❤ My ASU!! Mighty Marching Hornet Band🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤
Some battles aren’t about winners or losers; this is one of those for the culture.
absolutely. seeing this made me so proud. plus FAMU vs ASU is becoming a swac rivalry classic. this was like prelude to hbcu that!
This will be continued 10/4
Thank you Rick for the video. I feel like I am there. Good video shooting
This was a fun battle. I love how Florida a & m always puts on a show. What an amazing band.
Please leave on my mama to The Sonic Boom.
@@LynnHarris-zq2orI hate when you guys do lame stuff like that. JSU was irrelevant here
That dance routine by FAMU was hard 🔥🔥🔥🔥
FAMU vs ASU is starting to be a battle to see….this was refreshing
We (ASU and FAMU) been going at it since 98…
@@1898drebatton I didn’t say y’all wasn’t going at it as of yesterday. I’m say the battle is starting to be an interesting battle to see. From me it is best to take the compliment because I don’t give them very often 🙄
We were there!!! Ray Ray's Natural Soap!!! I had so much fun!! If you miss it, you miss it! I love every minute!!! so much fun!!!
I will be catching a famu game this year in person. If they this good with 35-40 members, I can't wait to sse them with a full band.
Now that's what I am talking about famu.
If u come to a Famu home game, I gotcha !!
Thanks for the video
2 great bands, but ASU🔥🔥🔥🔥🖤💛🖤💛
Big respect to our counterparts at ASU Marching 100 🤝🏾 Marching hornets #fortheculture
Bama State ❤
Thank you for the good coverage! Both bands did great! I liked FAMU’s call out around 40:30 too.
I’d say the crowd were the winners here!
ASU tubas sheesh they sound good on those borrowed horns those must be those good expensive tubas🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
They sound like Conns , they sound good af
@@macc5020 I don't play sousaphone, but I think Conns are one of the best. Aren't they a little larger than other models?
So sad I missed seeing my 100 in person again at this event. I will have to remember to mark my calendar for next year!
Big tip: if you ever get the opportunity to record FAMU again and you hear this cadence 1:03:23 pay attention to the Drum Majors and Tubas next time. You won’t be disappointed 😉

Bama State!!
Thank you Rick Upton for providing this video was looking for t since Sunday. I watched your channel last year, so I remembered to come back and check it out.. I notice the ASU bass drums had the San Jose State logo on them as well as your channels logo. What's the back story. Again thanks for providing a quality video.
Hi Chris, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm a San Jose State University (SJSU) Spartans alumnus, and the executive director of the organization which produced the event is also an alumnus of SJSU. I assume that Alabama State University needed to borrow the drums from SJSU which is just a few blocks from where the Juneteenth celebration was held.
They're all they way in San Jose so they probably used their drums
Did they just walk to different places in the area battled then went to the next spot? If they did, that's was pretty cool.
@Rick-Upton-San-Jose that's Alabama State University
You better get it right💯💪🔥@@larry8339
I need to be notified about these events
Bama State 🐝🔥🔥
As a UAPB fan ASU neck sends chills through my spine 🔥🔥🔥
They have and play 2 versions of it , the classic one as heard in this clip and the newer version from 2008-2019 which they don’t play as much anymore
@@Tjevdevs they played both mixed together; even in this clip
@@larry8339 yea I’m aware that they play a 3rd version of neck, truthfully I like the 2008 version more
Great footage. But next time, try to record in front of 1st row of every band. That's how you catch the sound of all the sections at the same time. Being in between both bands' drum majors would have been a perfect spot. But again Great footage.
I like to see the faces of the different band members and see the dancing too. Also, I'm a tall spectator trying to be considerate of the other spectators, so I just do the best I can without blocking others who were there first.
@@Rick-Upton-San-Jose Ah ok, i gotcha.
It looks like Bama St was chasing Famu up and down the street wit a belt to ass 😂😂 but they both did good
famu with the Kendrick Lamar diss song. That was nice.
Since this video is getting a lot of views and comments, I've updated the Description.
FAMU M100 🐍🐍🐍
FAMU all day everyday as a Rattler mom but this year I am happy to see both HBCU Bands this year.
Future reference, try to get in the middle of bands who battle. Staying on the side is a No, we won't hear the correct sound
Noted. I'm a tall spectator trying to be considerate of the other spectators, so I just do the best I can without blocking others who were there first. Also, I do like to see the faces of all of the players and to see the dancing, so that's why I'm on the side a lot.
It was impossible to get in the middle bruh. I was there... event planners didn't think it thru
I agree... If he wants to gain more subscribers, the camera must be targeted for better views! This opportunity is not for the faint of hearts!
1:01:32 Rollup to the TNLU/"OV-Ho" section. Dagnabbit I wish I had gone that weekend. Definitely next year!
Bama State rocking gold tubas now ?????
Nah they borrowed them from another college in San Jose
I'm confused myself
And that's not Bama State drum section
Percussion and tubas had borrowed them
Bama switched to Gold tubas. Nice
I think they just borrowed those because if I remember correctly, they had just got brand new silver tubas.
Doesn’t look like they’re using their Tubas or Drums.
They borrowed from a local school in cali
@@ALex-vp8mhThat would make sense..the tuning is different.
@@jheht2000how they sound, trash
What were they doing way out in Cali?
The city of San Jose or organization payed for them to be apart of their Juneteenth Day celebration
Alabama State won by a land slide. I haven't seen a band get blew out like this in a while. FL a&m didn't even put up a fight. This was bloody. Florida a&m got walked down by ASU literally and figuratively.
I mean y would famu take dem serious rn they are doing sum for Juneteenth💀
I disagree! They did have better arrangements and song selections but that's about it They had alotta intonation challenges imo... FAMU was overall more entertaining just need better arrangements....
FAMU DESTROYED ASU WITH 30 MEMBERS, BUT IF YOU LIKE BLASTING AND VOLUME, you might consider ASU. BOTH REPRESENTED HBCU BAND PROUDLY.
@@rxgesellz7002
Correct… for the idiots who thing ASU won, in 2022 we went to their stadium and clean there asses on the football field and in the stands… I’m sure they didn’t forget…. Famu all day.. ASU sounds like a band that has bad diarrhea
@@ReginaldAtkins-k2z Alabama State Arrangements are the worst.. it’s tradition… that’s never going to change
If you were listening for clarity, dynamics, and range, FAMU is definitely your band. If you were listening for volume, ASU is your band.
i thought it was good exposure for sure. It was a good, fun battle between 2 great HBCUs that a lot of west coast kids don’t get to experience. You can tell how some of them were looking because they were in awe and it was something totally new to them!
Naw... Bama State will actually give you both. They show alot of versatility beyond just volume
If 2 bands sound good and they both did in this video, then the one with the better song book wins and for me it was ASU
@@larry8339 As FAMU's director often say during their shows - the difference is clear. When it comes to clarity, dynamics, and range, FAMU is simply on another level.
@blkplaya9891 well as a FAMU director, you should see that the difference was definitely and yall got out performed lol... yall dance good though
I know it wasn't either school full band, but geez, FAMU only had a handful...smallest I ever seen at an outing. I mean, 4tubas? They left the other 45+ on campus. It was still a cool battle tho. Happy to see HBCUs at other events like this. (Jukebox alumni here).
that's probably all San Jose' could afford... after all they paid for 2 different bands.
Last year it was 56 members so maybe it was the same this year
Both bands were waaaaaaaay smaller than the full band lol
It’s called . Summer band . It’s not Mandatory! Main focus it’s to get a degree first !!!
They have over 300 band members they had Summer Orientation and they are preparing for the band camp and the new members. Thanks for the video
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛
40:40 FAMU ALL THE WAY, THE DIFFERENCE WAS CLEAR. HUBBA RATTLERS!
A lot of circumstances that was out of their hands but what a battle it was. Small but still sounded good I’m pleased with the outcome as far as I can hear and understand. I’m ready for the season right now. This was unexpected but I still never can understand the hype around FAMU. I truly believe the packaging is more important than the actual product. Some people act like the program sounds so much different than what I’ve heard from the BIG 3. Nonetheless great battle from both programs
Only thing we agree on is fampoo is overrated. Both noise makers were mid. Even with full band, they both are mid or below.
They are the Originators of Sound they play a different variety of songs . There is only one . Many Blessings to all HBCU Bands
The DJ won this battle. lol
Looks like a fun friendly. Congrats on the exposure. #Thee
why didn't i hear about this batlle
Right!!! They sent to Cali for this. That’s crazy I didn’t hear anything about this
I heard about it last year through Marching 100 social media and again this year.
No one cares about two mid bands battling each other. I can see if the Big 2 SWAC bands were battling.
@@chrisstanley349 oh ok. i haven't been on there
@LynnHarris-zq2or seeing that you've made multiple comments on this video, you obviously care about them lol
Famu always sucked to me, damn near every school in dekalb had that famu style and I hated it so much lol I’m glad my school had a bama state band director.
43:49 not cymbal player on the far right, dropping his cymbals
He popped it back in place didn’t drop a thing
@@roubertallen8667 😂 if you say so
@@kingjkendrick4534 I marched behind him and watched so all you gotta do is believe me🤷🏽♂️
lol ASU been getting waxed by FAMU during the seasons for years now. Go watch for yourself they are no match for FAMU. When they put together a decent field show I will take them serious.
FAMU aint waxed a damn thing! lol
The worst thing you did for ASU was get close. Yikes - in a bad way...😂
You FAMU folks be weird af
@@larry8339exactly!
I actually enjoyed ASU better. I liked FAMU as well. I like this rivalry because they're somewhat similar in style. ASU just has more soul to me.
Love hearing both Mann Bama St. Tubas Going To Be A Problem in the fall lawddd Dey sound amazing
@@JohnnyGinnCarpeDiemFilms the tubas really DID sound good - and other parts of the band. As a whole, though? Nope...
Yes it was a good battle shout out to all of them but Sonic boom of the South vs da world
Jsu fans be so thirsty for attention.
Sadly
@@charleslewis7381 I didn’t know yall was battling this summer, I would have flew out to support and recorded per usual
JSU was not there. Hush Up
