It is truly an all time great song by the most underrated band in the world. Never truer than today, brilliant clip
Thanks to all the people who liked my comment, ironically, Bad Religion IS my religion, they're so awesome and happy New Year to all
Perfect!!!!
My dad introduced me to this band when I was a kid. He said any band whose lyrics make you look up the words in a dictionary, that's a good band.
When I DJed on my college radio station my intro was "Get out your thesauruses, Kids! It's Bad Religion with [Name of Song}!"
@@bradleyheck7204 Can't like this enough
Smart man, your dad
Good parenting
For real! "It's a matter if prescience! No not the science fiction kind..." Had me translating English to English. Materialist is just bad ass
Super relevant again.
Re St he’s talking about the California wild fires...
Always has been
markw27 When wasn't it over the last century?
@Danny Dircio Fuck you, I've seen Blade Runner. In 2019 it was always rain.
@Danny Dircio Your words are like tears in rain.
I cry every time I listen to this song, March this year my dad took his life and him and I used to listen to this in his car going to school and everywhere else. I listen to this every night to remind me that my dad loved me.
Keep strong Buddy, yes your Daddy absolutely love you.
Did he leave you (edit - I think my seven year old wrote this. I agree with the previous comment.)
@@zackhuffman no but he took his life (sucide)
I'm so sorry, Zakku. Your dad did love you. There is nothing in life that should make you want to follow his example. He would never have done it if he had been able to see past his confusion and realize how it would affect you. Don't ever forget those good times. They're all that matters as far as your dad is concerned.
Stay strong brother ❤
"How could hell be any worse"
subtle nod to their first album
Right? Plus the cover has Los Angeles in it, excellent.
When I first heard them I was super religious and I was offended by the question "how could hell be any worse."
By the time I heard this song when it was new I was an atheist and the phrase "more a question than a curse, how could hell be any worse" was one of the most profound things I had ever heard.
More explanations, please.
@@gatekarain9780 Their first album was called "How could hell be any worse?"
This song contains those very words.
@@kendomyers American Jesus was offensive to me when I was still a Christian. Now I relate to the lyrics supremely as an atheist.
Super relevant right now.
Marky Shaw Came to listen to it because of the current fires too :(
It's unfortunately why I've been thinking about it so much lately.
First song that came to mind when watching the footage.
Yup
Ok so I'm not the only one that has this song pop in their head when listening to the news?
With all the wildfires in California and the blackouts this is the song that comes to mind.
Brenna7312 I was thinking about the same thing.
Just literally watched this in real life on the news. I see there are others... Lol
Everytime.
This song has stuck with me for 16 years, since the 2004 San Diego County wildfires rained ash on us all. My heart goes out to all those in the paths of the fires on the west coast.
Literally when I decided I needed to move tf home to Vermont. Lease expired 6 weeks later, and left.
Dude I remember the fires 4 counties were on fire in 2003. Sanbernadino, Riverside, Oc and LA. It rained ash for 3 weeks strait like silent hill.
The best melodic hc/punk old school forever.
This song and voice going into a future for
generations!
as posers.
This song is increasingly timeless...
Bad Religion I want to my thanks for the many years and amount om music you have made and played. I am a So Cal Gen X Punk ! Beach Local surf, vert skate and snow boarder listening to Bad Religions great Old School Punk and it all today. KEEP IT UP as long as you can. I just turned 50 and still Punk and proud. Thank You
My grandparents lost their home in the Woolsey Fire. This song came to mind... Hope you Malibuites and folks from Conejo Valley are safe.
Bad Religion changed my life and perspective. When people ask me what my favorite band of all time is, I say with pride "BAD FUCKING RELIGION", the greatest and most influential punk band of all time.

It's November 2018 and it's happening again!
Bobcat665 I can't believe it bobcat665 do u live in California if so I hope your home is ok
Dude I came back to this video (the fires reminded me) and saw that I posted a comment about the relevance of it on this video last year, well 11 months ago. Crazy as shit, I've been listening to this band for 22 years now at least and the amount of relevant experiences I've had through their music over time has compounded me. It's too much :p
wow it's like LA burning is an annual event
October 2019 and it's happening again too.
Best album ever. I'm a catholic too. Just shows you don't have to be atheist to respect this guy. And that I'm not a closed-minded fool.
You don't sound Catholic.
I hate religion but would love to have someone to be able to share the holidays with. They're not a religious thing for me.@@DeterminationInspiration-pj2oi
@@DeterminationInspiration-pj2oi Oh, naïve teenage Eric - I didn't foresee some edgelord coming along years later and throwing down reddit-grade atheist rants. I'll celebrate Christmas twice as enthusiastically this year, just for you.
@@DeterminationInspiration-pj2oinow i'm curious. what sort of 'big changes' would you propose? i'll get my popcorn ready.
@@TheEric1203lol respect for coming back to this 13 years later
Personally this is my favorite Bad Religion song by far. They have many other amazing songs but this sticks out as my absolute favorite. Probably cause this was the first one I heard.
Same...though I am not sure wether i heard american jesus first.
Kyoto Now holds a special place in my playlist.
Bad Religion is a band that you think my favourite album not favourite song, they have so many good songs and albums its so hard to pick my favourite
This song slapped the first time I saw them play it live. It’s a perfect song
This is my all-time favorite of theirs, too, maybe because I relate so much since I live in the LA area. However the first song I heard was 21st Century Digital Boy on my car radio.
Bad Religion have a gift for melodies
more a question than a curse how could hell be any worse...fuck man golden line right there....
My heart stops for a couple of seconds for excitement every time I hear it hahahaha
Lee Lynch obviously a nod to their earlier record of the same title.
Exactly. How could hell be any worse. Great album. Great band no doubt about it.
I plan to get a tattoo of the crossbuster logo with that quote around it.
"how could hell be any worse" is honestly their best album imo
L.A. is in a post-apocalyptic world as we speak. Literally. The hills of los Angeles are burnin'..
Greg Graffin is one of the most intelligent lyricists i've ever heard
@@frankgrimes7388 -- Jesse Michaels is (like Greg) one of the best lyricists in punk and in rock! I've learned so much from these masters over the close to three decades I've been rocking out to them! Jesse is a very nice fellow too (and although I never conversed with Greg, he seems like he would be as well!), as well as an excellent abstract artist! :) I would also put Jeff Ott from Crimpshrine and Fifteen in the same lyrical category as Greg and Jesse!
Far and away. One of the rare cases of a singer with a PhD.
When a PhD says, "nah I'll turn down my job as a professor offer at UCSD, and just sing in a punk band" you know he's legit, he's the only member I believe whos been with the band through out. I saw em on warpt tour I think, like 95 also san Diego Viejas, or Coors back then, theatre in 2001.
It took me way too long to figure out "even the stars are ill at ease" might just be about Hollywood elites 🤔 😂
True dat.😊
IM GONNA MARRY THIS GOD DAMN FUCKING SONG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
elizabeth ford Watch out, he might get played by other girls and cheat.
+elizabeth ford not if I get to it first!
I'm gonna get tattooed "More a question than a curse how can hell be any worse?" with the cross buster logo
2024 Right here right now
gotta love this vocalist.
he just makes me happy by singing anything. really. love these guys.
I feel the same way, Peter! I wonder if you'll reply to this reply I left on your 11 year old comment!
@@CellarDoorx06 I wonder, too!
@@Designificance lol
Also, same!
Somehow this song never gets old. I love this song so much
Had this song stuck in my head all day.
The opposite of a problem!
First BR tune I ever heard. Absolutely killer.
“More a question than a curse,
How could hell be any worse?”
🔥🤘🏻🔥
Somewhere high in the desert near a curtain of a blue
Saint Ann's skirts are billowing
But down here in the city of lime lights
The fans of Santa Ana are withering
And you can't deny the living is easy
If you never look behind the scenery
It's showtime for dry climes
And bedlam is dreaming of rain
When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning
This is not a test
Of the emergency broadcast system
When Malibu fires and radio towers
Conspire to dance again
And I cannot believe the media Mecca
They're only trying to peddle reality
Catch it on prime time, story at nine
The whole world is going insane
When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives are on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning
A placard reads "the end of days"
Jacaranda boughs are bending in the haze
More a question than a curse
How could hell be any worse?
The flames are starting, the camera's running
So take warning
When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives are on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning
I love the "How Can Hell be Any Worse" as the climax in the bridge, a wink to their early stuff. I love little meta easter eggs like that in songs. It reminds me of NOFX ending "All His Suits are Torn" with the hook/chorus of "Leave it Alone".
I noticed that too and love that reference. Also incredibly underrated album
How could hell be any worse your right it be a Vacation compared to Biden being president Lmfao

I Love the style of this video. Graffin for President 2016.
Brad Lahey I'd trust him more than any of the other hacks that have announced their candidacy. He might even have more of a college education than 3/4 of the field.
+John Doe He has a PHD, that's already more credentials than most Republicans.
Easy fellas, I like the song and the video. Leave me out of the Mickey Mouse Club.
+Ysier Moutherfucking Mexus Or Democrats.
Brad Lahey fuck government
Underrated song from an underrated album.
what i love about them is that there lyrics are intelligent. a lot of punk bands dont have the most intelligelible lyircs, but there still good; but its the lyrical power of Greg Graffin that makes this music so great!
2:24 RIP little pigeon friend
I would have had him go longer, but I only had a few frames of him to work with. Sorry.
Ahah,sort of metaphor).death of a peace symbol.
Punk is always relevant if you're paying attention.
Love the visuals of the camera man flame thrower and the camera headed person. Also love the headlines "is media coverage of LA destruction too negative". Couldn't have actual news with this level of insight.
"It's a boy"

What Else?
I'm so glad somebody else thought that too everyone acted like I was in such bad taste when I started playing the song in the background when the news came on about that gender reveal fire...
@@tylerkriesel8590 where does the * go exactly genius? Explain your bad joke.
The irony behind this song is burning right now.
the song seems prophetic, i hope it won´t come an earthquake extra.
it´s horrible to see it in the news, how the eastcoast is burning in 2020.
The Problem is, when the fire comes once in a 30 years or something, the forests can recover, but if it burns every year, the forests will vanish. that´s what makes me so sad. We are destroying the world of our children and their kids.
Every couple years this song manifests as reality
Battle of Los Angeles, the most peaceful , punk rock song to write about los angeles burning which it is right now, just not in visible flames.
During this heat wave this video is an accurate portrayal of Los Angeles.
Jomadscientist "heat wave"
Fu**ing awesome! Love Bad Religion: great lyrics, great music, great attitude. And live, they really kick a**! I saw them in a club in Hamburg with no more than 400/500 people. They created more energy than an atomic power plant!
This song never stops being relevant, sadly.
First off, awesome song. I love me some Bad Religion.
Second off, whoever edited and made this video, just give them an award. I don't know which award, but give them an award of some kind. This video is fantastic and I really feel like it needs to be mentioned.
God I love this song. That tasty bass riff at about 2:00 is awesome. This was the only cd in my car for like 2 years, never tire of it.
This song keeps becoming super relevant
Holy shit! I cannot believe this song is that old. I remember when it came out!
Relevant once again
Both the song and music video aged really well.
I found this on a search for a different song that’s driving me crazy, but this is a song that my step dad had playing in the car when I was younger so I decided I’d stop my search for the other song for now until I can ask him tomorrow, but this song gave me some comfort since it’s a song that I didn’t think I’d hear again even if I didn’t look for it
cool stories

When this came out it was mandatory to blast this when you were in traffic on the 10 freeway
Nostalgia and the current fires near LA brought me.
Driving down the 405 in LA tonight, this one's terrifyingly up-to-date.
How relevant in 2020. Anyone notice "plague" and "feel the burn" on the t.v. screen in the music video?
How could hell be any worse?
Where?
The end of days
I noticed that part
Those are normal end of days topics. Relax.
Greg is one of the best rock singer, of any subgenre, Period
Epic song. L.A. is truly burning right now... gnarly winds and fires 🔥...
^ This guy doesn't live in the Valley.
This was how i I discovered BR - on a free giveaway Kerrang cd and fell in love immediately. What a band 🤘🏻
Punk rock will always be relevant in one way or another
props to the this guy at 1:33 for having the will power to excise even when the entire city is on fire
R. I.P lost Angeles
just here because the hills of Los Angeles are Literally burning.
Hoormazd Kia thank you for this. I thought I was the only one with this song stuck in my head while the hills are burning.
True
Useless trivia: Tom Petty's guitarist, Mike Campbell, played the solo on this song. Cool story behind how that came about.
And he's playing the same Fender Broadcaster he played on American Girl, and you can hear the similarity! No mistaking it.
Sending love and good vibes to Cali right now!!! 💖💖💖
Whoa, this guy was my Life Science professor at UCLA... what the hell??
PhD in Evolutionary Biology. The guitarist is a Mathematician as well. Great band.
He's like a legend

Almost that time of the year again. This song is no joke, if one lives in the So Cal mountains.

Such a powerful video. Really. The peace dove burning? The media devices spewing fire? Just....so good. Plus the style of the video is pretty awesome.
Relevant again a year later.
Suddenly this song is relevant again.
Holy shit! Greg looks like Saul Goodman!
To me he looks more like doctor Cox lol
Saul Goodman or its all good man.

Holy shit, The Hills are burning right now
Yeah, but they have burned before, so it is not hard to guess they would in the future.
