Hi Mr Savage, I should have written earlier but time flies. You posted a series of videos stripping down a astra Z16XE engine and rebuilding it. Well, my daughter was driving up from Cornwall to Kent in her 2001 astra when her cambelt snapped in Bodmin. The car was recovered to the country lane outside my house and I told her that it was irrepairable. She loved that car and pleaded with me to fix it, adding that I was briliiant, genius and the best Dad in the world. Yeh, she figured me out and since I had nothing on that week I thought, how hard can this be!! Coming from a bloke whose knoweldge of cars is generally limited to changing oil. But I do have a very comprehensive tool kit so, in between breaks of the typically wet Cornish weather, I set to with a philosophy of 'start at the top and work down'. I discovered your videos and you became my new engineering tutor. So valve cover off, camshafts out, sprockets, timing gear and cylinder head off. I found 10 out of 12 corkscrew valve stems and a few half moons on the piston tops. See, I learned this new language from you too. It was at this point I fell and broke my pelvis clean through in two places. This slowed me right down for a few days but they told me to keep exercising. So crankcase open, pistons out, big ends etc.I cleaned everything up and replaced shell bearings to big ends, piston rings and valve stem guides, all gaskets new and refitted head with new bolts tightened to schedule. New bolts for cam fixings but the camshafts and sprockets all looked good so kept them. And then snapped a cam bolt down in the shaft. I had forgotten which tightening stage i was at so evertightened that one. Screwix to the rescue with bolt drillers and reverse taps. I had a old door hinge drilling jig so took it apart to give a 7mm hollow ferrule to get the drill central to the broken bolt. 20 seconds drilling, reverse tap in and Presto! all fixed. Rebuilt all the rest following your guide, so amzing and I owe you so many thanks for your patience. Finally turned on the car and engine started with a rhyhtmic clacking sound coming from the timing belt area. What a waste of time. Or so I thought until my cousin came round, a much better mechanic. He got under the car and found that I hadn't pushed home the plastic timing cover plastic case. That restored, everything was smooth and quiet, a better car than we started with I think. Lucy has now driven 23,000 miles over two years and the only thing gone wrong now is dirty Oxygen sensors and filthy EGR valve. Now done and going strong. I honestly could not have done this without your help. I watch everything you do now.
❤❤❤❤❤ i acquire a used zafira with same engine. I was scared it was transmission problem but my engr just changed the EGR change the spark plug and service the nozzle. Here i am smiling😂😂😂 i have been thinking of changing the gear box and its expenses. Abdussalam from Nigeria 🇳🇬
I've got a vectra 1.8 with a very similar engine. These videos have been great for allowing me to do small jobs. Look forward to seeing how the new Astra progresses
Pretty cool. Thanks for this video. I'm cleaning EGR too in my Astra G 1,6 16V. And I use one tip. If You put 9V battery in first and last pin in EGR, then EGR is open. And You can Clean this stuff better. Maybe this tip is someone help.
I thank you for the video, my engine mangemnet light came on. Took it to my local garage and the mechanic said it was this egr valve, turned the light off but said it may come back on. do you think cleaning will cure the issue? And what do these egr valves do? Thank you Steve
Hi, Steve! This valve is resend some part of gases from exhaust collector to intake collector to make the engine more ecologic. I think cleaning will cure the issue ;)
That wynns brake cleaner is the best I've used, it's one of very few that actually contains acetone in it. Most other brake cleaners don't have this very potent solvent!
Hi i have a mk5 astra 1.6 petrol and it burns about a litre of oil on long journeys.would cleaning this help or does this have nothing to do with that?
I have an Astra G 1.6 16V petrol and the engine warning light came on. I did the pedal test & got 0400 code which is apparently the EGR valve. Will the warning go after I clean the valve or do I need a code reader to reset it?
hi good video, any one watching this give your egr a good clean and see if it works. i have bought the cheap egr valves for my astra off eBay for around £20, and every one of them bought the eml up and were no good, so this is well worth doing thank you
Hello, How do I clean Holden Astra 1.8 L TS model (2002)? I opened the cover of engine unfortunately it was different than the one you are showing on the video? I would be more appreciate if you would help me? Due to in dashboard spanner light (orange colour) is flashing. I assume would from EGR valve. Thank you
Best bet.. If mil light is off when you started... Blank the egr port and hang the old unit to one side but still plugged. Never clean or replace again. Car will run smoother and get better mpg. Win/win.
Your engine has a rough idle. ... Your car has poor performance. ... You have increased fuel consumption. ... Your car frequently stalls when idling. ... You can smell fuel. ... Your engine management light stays on. ... Your car produces more emissions. ... You hear knocking noises coming from the engine.
I wish you all the prosperity and abundant good health, good wealth and everything else thats good....Great vid, great music and best of all.....You just helped me to save £££££'s Bless
I am also with a 2000 1.8 x18xe1 engine.I will see if I have one or it has been deleted, because sometimes is not running smooth. I've cleaned the maf sensor and intake body two times and flushed the oil in advance to get as much carbon as I can. It runs decent until 3k rpms, but sometimes above 3k it lacks a bit of power in a steep hills when I test her. Well it is no race car, but when I got it 4 years ago it was a bit quicker so thanks for that! Be healthy, guys.
worst cars ever made..80% of these cars aircon fails at approx 10 years...rear window track rollers disintegrate..car stereo seems to like full volume at start up on cold days..digital read out on dash..light bulb blows have fun fixing that...when headlight blows it takes out other side headlight..reverse lift lever on gear shifter fails..this cars only done 160k
I have two of these, one from new (2000) and another from 2003 that I have a year now. Never had any of the problems you had. Yes I had some slight issues but nothing I could never fix myself. Live these cars and like any other car if treated well and bot abused will last a very long time.

Just bought a Astra 2015 for £1600 salesman said EGR fault fitted a new one thanks for your video on how to fit it
Simple yet brilliant video, much thanks to the uploader.

thanks man just a quick question, do I need to disconnect car battery before doing the job.
It's good practice to unhook the battery whenever doing work in the engine bay buy I don't imagine it will hurt

Thanks, Never knew where the EGR valve was until I watch the video Now I can get it off and give it a good clean, See if i can save £80.........
Joseph Barr well then the video done its job! :) 2 bolts and a clip, definitely a DIY job if you have the tools :)
great video but can u clean the hose connected to it also?
You can do if it has a lot
Of carbon build up :)
Hello,

Yeah same with mine.i think some models don't have this valve
I have a 2002 astra 1.8 coupe and the engine is similar to yours, but I can't find the egr valve
Best bet.. If mil light is off when you started... Blank the egr port and hang the old unit to one side but still plugged. Never clean or replace again. Car will run smoother and get better mpg. Win/win.
Total bull
very good your videos
hi buddy could you do a vid on the aztra g 1.6 recirculation valve. my windows have started to mist up.
How to check if it's X14XE or Z14XE
I have 2001 Astra g MK4
1.4 LS 16v petrol hatchback
Great Video mate.
Great stuff, keep them coming :)
A mechanic just quoted me £70-£80 to clean my egr valve lol
Crook😅😁
What problems does EGR valve cuses on car!?.
Mil light comes on if valve stem has stuck with carbon or has actually bent or damaged the motor drive. If so.. Get a cheap or second hand unit.
Is this same with the mk 5 1.8 engine
Looks too simple to be true! Does the brake cleaner stuff act as a lubricant or something for the valve system?
Is it the same for a Vaxhall Mercia on a 53 Reg
my opel zafira hasnot egr valve.. why ? its made 2000 december.. it has ew ecotec generetion.. follow egr valve or not? x18xe1 i think this engine//.
Some Zafira 1.8 engines have EGR but some do not as they were removed later on, like my Z18XE does not have an EGR it is blanked off
I wish you all the prosperity and abundant good health, good wealth and everything else thats good....Great vid, great music and best of all.....You just helped me to save £££££'s
Bless
Thank you so much! I'm glad I could help you out :) that's the reason I do these videos! If you need anything else just ask :)
Great video thanks James very informative. Exactly what I was after!...... Also what's the music playing..? :)
Why did the intro sound like 'THX' 😂😂😂
used carb cleaner it worked light went off but had to change one spark plug i
is it the same for a corsa c 2001? could you explain what happens with the coolant ?
Corsa c has a completely different EGR setup bud
What do you mean what happens with the coolant?
+The Savage Garage i was reading how to do it and people were saying about coolant leakage? What is different in the corsa egr set up? cheers
what is the capacity of this engine
petrol??
I'm confused as my 1.8xe engine seems to be missing an EGR valve.
If you can't see the EGR then it was blanked off, they blanked it off in later models but some of the earlier models have EGRs
I am also with a 2000 1.8 x18xe1 engine.I will see if I have one or it has been deleted, because sometimes is not running smooth.

@@АлександърИванов-щ8ю mine was the same changed o2 sensors..but replace them with genuine parts..I bought cheap knock off's..they lasted 1 week
Thanks---super
This is not cleaning lol
Put + and - on pin 1 and 5 and it pops out if it does not dont clean just replace it
Das hilft nicht lange, blind platte einsetzen.

steff serpent not every car has the same issues mate lol just because one car has those issues doesn't mean they all will
