Over the life of a vehicle, the transmission can often be overlooked when performing routine maintenance. If left unserviced, the automatic transmission fluid will break down, causing the valve body and filter to become contaminated with deposits and sludge. This will lead to poor shifting, slipping, and ultimately transmission replacement.

Proper service and repair procedures are vital to the safe, reliable operation of all motor vehicles as well as the personal safety of those performing the repairs. Standard safety procedures and precautions (including use of safety goggles and proper tools and equipment) should be followed at all times to eliminate the possibility of personal injury or improper service which could damage the vehicle or compromise its safety.

The best and only video i have found explaining that the transmission must be leveled not the car, excellent video.
Man ECS you guys deserve a PayPal donation!. Finally a video on UA-cam that explains the PROPER method to service the ZF transmission...
Yes and you should give him one!
Best video I ever seen for this procedure. Two things I would add 1) The screw for the filter is T30 although the T27 bit could work. And 2) the red fluid from redline, valvoline, Castrol etc may meet the specs to what was in it originally but not exactly the same wrt density, viscosity, SG etc; the better choice would be the pentosin/Fuchs ATF 1 or Febi or the original ZF lifeguard 5.
Make sure you can loosen and remove the fill plug BEFORE you remove the drain plug!
Nice to see metal parts and not plastic like the new ones
good clear instruction, thank you.
He should clean outside the pan, so in the future we could check if there is a leak or not. anyway the procedure ir clear and easy to follow. Thanks
the you explained and the way you did everything is amazing
Excellent video I'm going to change my 2008 BMW 750li the car has 160,000 kilometers it's slipping a little .Thanks for posting the video.
Wow, thanks so much for the clearest video ever
This is so much easier when it is on a lift.
hello my friend I'm writing from the turkey. I'll ask you a question and I'll be happy if you help me. The 2001 model has an e46 3.20d vehicle with 100kW (136). when the car is on the first launch and every time you press the accelerator pedal, it takes off with 4 seconds delay. the revolving clock is moving, meanwhile accelerating after 2 thousand cycles. GAZA is doing the gas interruption in the loading.Water repairs, pump repair, injector, air flowmeter.
Great video. Will be doing this on my 09 E82 with D6 transmission fluid.
Thanks for the ideas you have shared here.
Beautiful video all respect. Please if you can answer me please. I have a bmw 525 tds 1998.Transmission model.A5S310Z. What type of oil do I use to change it? How do I get the oil out of the converter? To make it 97% good a video would be welcome thanks
This video was very helpful but when changing the transmission fluid, how is the fluid extracted from the talk converter?
State of the art
Great Video. Very Useful.Congratulations
Hello. I have an E34 with a 5HP18, which recently lost all drivetrain power. I stopped driving for a bit and when I put it in D nothing happened, except for the engine revving, but with no movement. The same goes for all of the other gears. R, 4,3, and so on. The wheels on the other hand lock, when the trans is in P, and move freely in N. Worth mentioning, is that before all of this happened the gear selector was really hard to engage. It was resisting a lot and struggled to go into gear. I checked the oil level in the trans today and the wire that goes from the gear selector to the trans and they were both fine. The car has also been sitting for about 2 years outside without being moved. What do you think is the problem?
Question: After performing this fluid change, I intend to use my ECS Schwaben PronScanner to "reset" the fluid life counter. Should I also use it to force the transmission to readapt to new fluid???
is it the same procedure for an ZF5HP24 automatic transmission?
and what is the recommended fluid for that transmission?
Yes, and use ZF Lifeguard 5 fluid
awesome vid thanks, great workshop too, I love it
hey ECS i just changed the fluid in my 98 323is its an automatic A4S 310 R THM-R1 its calls for DEX 3 but I used DEX 6 because all the research i have done peoples say DEX 6 is so much better what you guys at ECS think?
my BMW X5 2003 model have a problem on the 1st and 2nd gear... only 3 and 4 are shifting what can you suggest.
Great video!!
All other vids and manuals state that the vehicle must be level. So does the transmission or vehicle have to be leveled, which is it? Expert answers only please
According to me the transmission must be level on a E46.
I have a 2003 X5 3.0 with 164000 miles on it. At first start in the morning only, when I put it in drive I have to wait about 10 or 20 seconds with my foot on the brakes before taking off or the engine will rise as it slowly moves forward. But no problems the rest of the day. Could it need its first fluid and filter change, low fluid or could it be more serious?
I have BMW e60 2004 what type of oil i need to use and how many litres? Can u put a video for E60? Will the filter must be change because the filter is on carter?
Sweeet thank you guys. I'm changing my fluid on my 200k '99 528. Do you sell 'kits'?
Excellent video. Can you make one for a 2012 BMW X3. Make one please. Thx
Thanks. Just to clarify, a flush is doing 2-3 drain and refill, is that right?
Redline D6 ATF or Redline D4 ATF for ZF6HP19z? So many different answers.
How many quarts would an automatic transmission on my bmw 330i e46 take? Some say 7qts and some 11qts...
you might want to drain it again because the two fluids are different and they might not play nice with each other
I'm thinking about doing this soon on my 91 525i. This may be a dumb question, but after refilling the fluid until it drains out of the fill hole do you replace the fill plug before starting the engine and running the transmission through the gears? My transmission is acting a bit funny and when it does the gear indicator light in the dash is unlit. jiggling the shift lever a bit turns it back on and it works fine for a while so i'm going to look at it and clean or replace.
Mark Jones the fill plug must be fitted with the engine still running. If you shut down the engine and stop the fluid circulation then instantly 2-3 liters will pour down to the floor
The engine must be started when you refill the new oil, or what.?
How many liter's would an automatic transmisson on my bmw 318i e46 model 2000
The actual BMW procedure would lead you to believe that the transmission temp. of the fluid at the time of applying the fill plug is most important. I say no. The transmission being level has more of an impact than the expansion of the fluid at the proper temp. Case in point. The transmission of my X3 sits at a 5 degree angle when the SUV itself is level. Doing the math, this will change you fluid level far more than the temperature. So it is important to both have the transmission level and the proper temperature of the fluid. In my case I chose 40 C ( 30c-50C). I drained 4.5 liters of used fluid black and filled with 6 liters of Redline D6. The X3 had only 66,000 miles and operated smoothly. The fluid change was a proactive move on my part
Sharpshooter44024 When driving uphill/downhill or accelerat/brake neither the pan nor the fluid level will ever be level ;)
The whole thing is merely about overfill/underfill so the fluid will not come out from the top vent when boiling hot or the pump will suck air when in highly dynamic moves.
Imothep I was really concerned about not adding too much. I drained 4.5 liters and added 6 liters the exact way shown in the video. It seemed like a huger difference to me. It seems logical that the transmission level is the way to go prior to filling since my transmission goes into multiple different vehicles with each vehicle possibly having a different transmission angle. Once I have the proper amount of fluid volume I assume that the transmission design will account for the transmission level movement during a variety of maneuvers of the vehicle.
What happens if you add too much fluid ? Does if spill out of an over flow valve or blow out a seal ?
+Sharpshooter44024 Sharpshooter, your detailed explanation makes sense to me. But ECS's instructions are contradictory. The written version says to make vehicle level. Video says to make transmission level (using pan lip edge). Those are very different things.
With my 2002 BMW 530i, the transmission pan is level when the rear wheels are up on car ramps (9" off ground!)and front wheels on ground. That's a very steep front downward angle on vehicle. But you never see the vehicle in other videos at that kind of downward angle when they are checking fluid level. I haven't seen one in a shop at such an angle either. The vehicle always appears level on lift.
I actually called ZF North American today to try to resolve this. The ZF tech was adamant to make vehicle level, not transmission. (ZF's written guidelines also say make vehicle level.)
Because of this confusion, and before draining anything, I did a little test on my 530i. I leveled the vehicle, brought transmission to 30+ deg C, and opened fill plug, not drain plug. Almost 1/4 - 1/2 a liter of fluid came out! This suggests to me it was filled with transmission leveled (i.e. fluid more angled toward front of transmission away from fill plug, allowing more fluid in). Not with vehicle leveled, which runs more fluid toward back of pan, limiting amount you can pump in.
Finally, a very good point you make. The same transmission is at different angles in different vehicles! So that suggests you level transmission, not vehicle.
Those Germans seem more precise than this! I can't believe there is this kind of confusion. I was tempted to get my German friend to call ZF in Germany to go straight to the top!
HELPPPPPPP! I can't afford a new ZF5hp19!!!!!!!!!
Excelente ..felicidades..
Have some differents if my car is 530 diesel and in ur selection have 530 i ? the same fluid and filter kit for d and i ?
Hi I was wondering if guys could get do a transmission fluid diy video on a 2007 (e70) X5 with the N52 6 cylinder that would be extremely helpful thank you
HI, I have 2 - 740-4.4 v8 e38 BMWs, one is 1998 & the new one is 1999. As in t his video, will the procedure be the same for both, also what are the torques values for the studs and the drain and fill plugs?
Thanks
Omar S The fluid may be different for both cars depending on the color of the identification plate (green or black) Green lable means Pentosin ATF1, if black ask your BMW dealer. I have forgotten ;)
Hi, i have a bmw 328 ci model 2000 e46, what oíl is the recommended for this transmission? Which the full level ?. I from argentinian. Thank you for you time.
Obvisly this is automatic transmssion
In the manual bmw transmission say texaco Etl 7045 dexron 3 but here don't get and various web sites don't recommended dexron 3. Can you help me with this problem?
what happen if we not replace the gasket?
good tutorial
What if I do not have a car elevator or pit?
Is the used fluid normally black or grey in these transmissions?
Josh P the fluid that the particular transmission shown in this video "zf 5hp19" is similar in color to motor oil. I have done a lot of research prior to rebuilding mine. I bought Pentosin atf+1, they recommend zf lifeguard 5 fluid which is pretty much the same. I just wanted to use what the manufacturer recommended rather than experiment with other fluids like the red stuff in the video. not saying it isn't the right stuff.
***** I used Castrol Import multi vehicle. Nathansdiygarage said to use it. I have around 8 thousand miles since I flushed it and seems to work pretty good. You can't go wrong with pentosin though.
Josh P , that's really good to hear! I figured the other fluids would work just fine. I was just nervous when I started my rebuild and went a little too far down the rabbit hole researching fluids. Glad to get another confirmation about the castrol import multi vehicle fluid.
can you help me with 1991 e34 524 bmw automatc transmission
hola .bmw 320i 2000 the speedometer no work ,i need change the speed sensor but i dont now where is localizated in the transmision (automatic)
Duvan Orozco huh
I tried this, but my car refuses to go into gear. Any suggestions?
Najib Popal So, what happened? ECS Tuning answered your question, but you were silent.
thanks
Hello! I have a 2000 BMW 528i with a Steptronic automatic tranny. The car has 197,000 miles on it and I've found no evidence of any transmission service for it. The car still shifts fine, but many techs are telling me that since its this old with no service on it that its living off borrowed time. They also tell me to leave the transmission alone as changing the fluid at this point would damage it further since new fluid would remove the gunk that's keeping it together. In short, they tell me to just let it die. Can I have your opinion on this?
you could take the chance I'd do it or you can put a additive in it instead
I just changed mine at 199,000 and I doubt it was ever changed I doubt it was ever changed BMW claims that the fluid lasts a life time even though this isn't true
lifetime MEANS 100k km's or miles
I´ve had the same question, and decided to made the fluid change, mine has 190k km at that time and no one service history on transmission. The fluid that comes out was red to brown, but after the change I noted a small difference to better on faster and smoother gear shifting, hadn´t any problem. It´s what happened on my car.
Can anyone provide updates on their car? My 330ci has 150k miles and I'm not sure if I should change it
Great!!
First Rate
but there is still loads of fluid in the transmission you just changed part of it
@Terminology! there are special machines for it
why cant i ever find a video on a 1989 bmw 325i convertible
James Collins too old n simple to work on
what about for a 03 bmw x5 4.4i
What about the fluid in the cooler and cooling lines?
Thewestcoastshooter the only way to completely change the fluid is to flush the system with the car running. That would need to be done at the dealer or an aftermarket shop with the proper equipment. This video just outlines a basic filter change. The trans holds 9.8 liters total and I'd say only 5 liters are drained in this procedure. That's only half. if you run the car and drain it again the fluid will be black again in less than a few minutes.
If you want to do a more thorough fluid change you can disconnect the trans cooler lines and run a can of transmission cooler cleaner through the lines to remove the old fluid and clean them up. I used Kooler kleen by Dr. Tranny Amazon or Napa has this. Then if you really want to get another 2-3 more liters of fluid out of the transmission you can un bolt the valvebody. That will allow half of the fluid inside of the torque converter to drain. I bought three 5 liter jugs of pentosin atf+1 off ebay for $57 dollars each for rebuilding my transmission and it was enough.
hope this helps.
p.s. this advice only applies to the zf5hp19 transmission shown in the video. A GM transmission can also be found in e39 bmws...I don't know anything about those.
faseonepk2002 thanks for the thorough reply!!
they gave me the wrong transmission filter now I am upset
e46 please
stuck in failsafe mode. almost no movement in any gear but fail safe 4th gear. after it runs for any where from 5 min to 30 pops out of 4th and won't move again unit till I shut the car off and wait for anywhere from 5 min to an hour. note left bank know k sensor need replace local transmission guy said that those possible could be the cause? after supposably servicing the tranny. I check the fluid about 100 miles after looks like motor oil black unfortunately it's my only mode of transport and needed to drive it in fail safe mode. ideas???
what about an 05 e60.
Yes nice video but you change just 60 procent new Oil .40procent old oil stil is in gearbox best change like super flushing and move 99 old oil
not necessary. Just replace what comes out with the pan drop. the new filter and clean magnets will take care of the rest. transmission flushes can cause more damage than they are worth.
I don't like people who tell you never to change transmission fluid. I have a 2006 Jetta 2.5 and it is the same situation. The lie with a forked tongue and tell you that it lasts a lifetime but we all know that there are no real lifetime fluids. I don't even like coolant that is older than 2 or 3 years. I would rather they tell you the truth instead of lying to make the car look as if it needs less maintenance. It is just a clever scheme to get you to buy cars more often if you are so damned gullible that you would fall for that BS!!
This is the wrong oil. You have to use ATF LT 71141!!!! And not the red one.
Revision y cambio de aceite de caja automatica de BMW e39 1996
zf fluid yellow color not red color
Thanks for that USA, so why does my local transmissiion fella want to charge me £175.00? Mind you that's some tools you need to do this simple work! But if you are doing this all the time, the tools will soon be paid for..blahblah etc
Use gloves dude!
Great video!!
