this is brilliant. so, i've been using pro tools since 2003, and never bothered to learn punching in or any of that. i would just do the whole thing over, or use playlists to comp tracks together (realizing that it was more work). so, yeah, it's nice to finally learn how to do this.

How about loop recording with pre/post roll enabled? When I choose my pre/post roll settings with loop record, the playback begins from the pre-roll flag, but then enters my timeline selection and loops within the timeline selection; never goes to post-roll flag and never restarts at the pre-roll flag.

My potools don't start paying the pre roll at yellow flag. It just record with out pre playing. Can you help please?

So I also have just finally learned this, thank you, I found you while searching for another problem solve, perhaps you could help me? I have an annoying habit of hitting return instead of delete when editing, leaving me at the beginning of the song and searching for where I was previously, is there a way to jump back to where you were when you hit return? I can't find anything, thanks, Clive.
Oh, that's an interesting question! I'm not sure! You could use markers to create a few anchor points within your session to quickly jump to - but I'm not sure if there's a way to jump back to the exact location you were just in. You could also, in the options menu, unlink the timeline and edit selection, and then when you hit return it doesn't change your timeline selection, and you can easily return to that. But I find that when I unlink those it causes more annoyance in other ways, so that might not be the best fix. Anyway, let me know if you find a good fix? Cheers!

Hey, thanks! Since you can only have one video in PT, I don't *think* you can drop a video on a playlist. But, I think PT HD lets you have a few video clips, so you might be able to if you have HD. I haven't tried it though. For the pre/post roll values, you can open up the "expanded transport" view on your edit window toolbar (at the top of your edit window) by clicking on the drop down menu arrow at the top right corner of your edit window. That opens up the same view, but it's not the floating window. You can also change their values by holding option and then clicking with the selector tool in the timeline at the exact location where you want the pre or post roll to fall - then you'll see the little yellow flag move, which changes their values. You can also just click and drag the yellow flags around on your main time ruler to change the pre and post roll values. Is that what you're looking for?

I'm sure I've seen people put a metronome or some sort of timer over the pre-role in the context of foley recording etc (and a timing bar over the visuals). How would you do that? Keep up with this sort of content, really helpful.
Yeah, the visual timing bars are usually done by the visual people, from what I've seen. Those are great to have! You could put a metronome alongside the audio in PT, to help with timing - to do that you can just make a click track and then set it accordingly. Is that like what you're thinking about, for the audio component of timing aids? Some foley too, you can perform while trying to line up the timing with the visuals, but then after recording, you can perfect the timing by adjusting length, location, etc, within the PT editing process. I haven't used a click track to help with foley timing. What I find really helpful though, is loop recording a small section at a time, because then you get a sense of rhythm for the sound effect, and it's a lot easier to get the timing correct. Hope this helps!
I'm brand new to PT. How do I turn off the Pre-/Post roll? How do I remove the Pre-/Post roll markers?
Hi! You can either hold command and hit "K" (if you're on a mac, I believe it's probably control K on windows), and that will activate or deactivate the pre/post roll flags. Or, you can click on the "pre-roll" or "post-roll" buttons in the transport window to turn them off individually. The flags in the ruler area are yellow if they're on. So, if you want both pre and post roll off, you can hit command K and look for those flags to go from yellow to white. I don't know of a way to make those flags disappear though, off the top of my head, but I wouldn't worry too hard about seeing the white flags there when they're off - they don' t affect anything when they're off. Thanks! And yeah, I'm sorry! Haha, it's because I listen to podcasts at double speed or something. There's actually a speed adjustment on the youtube player, so you could listen a little slower if you want, too. It's on the bottom right of the player, click the little gear icon, and there's a playback speed option. Have you tried that? Maybe I'll be able to slow myself down a bit in future videos too, haha.
