- The best tool for cutting XPS Rigid foam board insulation. I used a piece of 2in FOAMULAR in the demonstration. I go over the different tools I tried to use and found the one that works the best.
Clean no mess cutting.

Hands down the 9mm snap-off utility knife is the way to go! Thanks for the help!!!
What is the actual name of this utility knife, I wish you showed a close up picture out of it 😊🤔👍
Agree. I found same advantage in cutting up cardboard, the narrower blade provides less friction on the sides due to a smaller contact surface, yet provides the necessary depth of cut fully extended to reach across the 2" foam board. Thank you.
Thanks for getting right to the point and keeping this simple. Appreciate the video. Thank you.
An even better and faster way to cut polystyrene insulation is with a jigsaw using the Bosch T 313AW3 6 inch wavy knife edge blade. Amazon sells 3 blades for $11. Very straight cuts with zero tear-out.
Great tip. I bought a combo kit at Home Depot. It came with a 9mm and 18mm knife. I used the 18mm. I made 4 or 5 passes with the knife for each cut. I was very proud of the work. Also, I clamped a strip of 3/4 plywood to the foam and cut gently along the board allowing the 3/4 to square the knife. It made real nice work.
DUDE that's what I'm talkin about, thank you.
I use a soft ferrous metal blade (looks like a flat metal disk with slots I it) in my 7.5 inch saw. Cuts like butter, straight, no mess, leaves a smooth finish.
Using a circular saw? Thx.
excellent, smooth sweet simple clean cuts... thin & sharp!...Appreciate the video. Thank you
No problem! Glad it was useful!
I just set up my circular saw with a .045 x 6 metal cutoff wheel. I had to make an arbor adapter ring (5/8”x7/8”) which was the only issue with it. Tried it and it makes a fast, beautiful, clean and fine cut without blowing foam all over.
I thought about trying that. I thought it might make a lot of melted gummy mess on the saw.
@@brianzachary5618 I actually found arbor adapters after I’d made one, so it would make it even easier.
Very helpful Sal. Thank you. I have 25 of the same boards to cut. I tried a reciprocating saw but it didn't make a straight cut and made a lot of foam dust.
i used a Nickle heat wire out of an old hair drier. i hooked it to power supply an it worked very well
Jigsaw with soft material blade works well if you already have one.
Thanks for the info, I guess the relatively small cross section of the craft knife makes the difference to friction.
Yeah I was surprised how well it worked. Also shocked that with all the research i did on how to cut this stuff no one tried one of these little blades before.
Sal, you are 100% right!!! I can't thank you enough for this video-the el-cheapo $dollar store blade cutter is the way to go - I did my cuts outdoors just in case, but really didn't need to - thanks again!
Thanks for sharing this!!! Just what I needed.
Hey Sal! Very useful, thank you! That worked very well for me!
Thanks
Perfect! Now, what type of glue works best on this?
Thanks for tip I've been making a mess with regular utility knife and scoring it seems to make it worse
No problem. I did the same at first. The key is the thin blade.
You can slice it easily with a hot knife or hot thin wire.
fantastic help... thanks!
Thank you!
Hi there, I’m a glazier. Homemade hot knife table saw.
Nice job
Nice job-
Thanks 😊
Is that 250? Didn’t work that well for me.
Can we see a close up of this utility knife so we know what we are looking for?
hot knife is best
But will that be to much work cutting length ways? 8ft is a long ways and even longer if like 15- 4x8 panels need to be cut to go between outside floor joist on 2ft centers...............
I didn’t have an issue. Just use a drywall t-square to keep it straight. If its too slow for you and you don’t mind making a mess try one of the other methods.
@@CiscoSal Speed, straight, square is what I'm after, circular does all three. It cant be no messier that cutting wood, the cutting will be outside so making a mess wont bother. Anyways I dont have enough patience to cut 300 ft with a knife.
in the future we will be using a cordless hacksaw with a metal blade .
I got a lot of half-inch board to cut and after watching this video I thought the same same thing basically that you did about using a hacksaw blade the type that attaches to an open and pistol grip handle type.
Can u find it in Home Depot online and show the link
Here you go!

Screw that gonna break out jig saw.
Hot wire cutter
is it possible to cut whole sheet 50mm to convert 25mm?
Not this way. Why not just buy a 25mm/1in sheet? It’s going to be really hard to rip a sheet like that any way you try.
electric foam knife
Thanks great tips
I need to cut 14 sheets, no time for a 9mm blade....
If you don’t mind a mess you can use another method to try and do it in bulk.
Wear safety glasses
Worth saying 😉
Always a good idea!
Excuse me do you have another Amazon link for those please ? The others are currently unavailable 🥲
Try again those look in stock to me
Can we see a close up of this utility knife so we know what we are looking for?
Check out the amazon link. It’s just a thin utility knife. They have them at Home Depot and lowes for a few bucks.
@@CiscoSal Thanks!
