It's like having an uncle or Dad giving you advice. I love it! Thank you!
Are you calling me old?
No sir, you're an extremely likeable and knowledgeable authority figure giving advice! Better? 😁
Almost 6 years later and this is still very helpful. Thank you so much Robert!! I’m auto transporting but the basics are still the same!!
You are welcome.
Thank you for making this video! You gave great tips to consider. Almost 8 years later and still very helpful content. Thanks again and God bless you!

Thank you very much and tanks for watching.
Thank you so SO much for making this video. I’m a big nerd so anything I don’t get, I do research on first and this was very informative.
I just got my first full time job and will be making a move from the south to the Midwest (800-900 miles) so the tips noted will definitely be used.
Thanks for watching.
My boyfriend and I are about to move just about 2000 miles, I can't express enough how helpful this video is. I'll be saving it and checking it out again if I need to remember something. Thank you for this!!
You are welcome.
Hello Mr. Robert, I know this video is a few year old, but I'm so grateful that you made it. I'm getting ready to travel around the same amount of miles as you did, and, well, I'm so nervous about renting a Uhaul and driving the large vehicle. However, now that I've seen your video, I have more confidence. Thank you so much for your tips! Many blessings.
Thanks for watching and for the blessings. 😇
Great tips Robert, I will be watching it again a few more times to make sure I have it down.
+Danne George Thanks for watching. Hope your move goes well.
Robert DIY It will now with your help and advice.
Hands down the best how-to video on towing a vehicle. Thanks!
You are welcome.
This is the most helpful video I’ve seen on using u haul trucks with trailers. Thank you.
You are welcome.
Thank you for doing an excellent job. You hit on every worst-case scenario and that is what everyone needs the first time they are doing this.
thanks for watching.
Hey thank you so much...I really appreciate it man. I'm not scared now to drive this behemoth alone now. You saved my trip. 🖤 15' truck + tow dolly, 1400 miles in 24 hours. God help me. driving alone first time uhual. Ooooof.
Probably will take you longer.
How long did it end up taking you?
OMGOODNEESS your video was so helpful. I wouldn't have know all of this if it wasn't for your video. You need to be paid by U-Haul for those people in the future that plan on traveling for like this, this way. All the RENTAL TRUCK COMPANY should use your video as a example. What great information for people like us. May God Bless you on what's to come. Good job well done Robert.
Thanks for the kind words.
Thank you so much for this video! I really appreciate it! I'm renting a 10ft truck with the tow dolly and driving almost 2,000 miles. Driving anything longer than my little RAV4 is super intimidating. This video may be 5 years old but it is still very relevant. I made several notes and saving this video for reference. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!
You are welcome.
How was your experience ? 2000 miles is a lot
Hey GFG I will be towing with my little 2018 Rav4 too. Glad he mentioned the part about allwheel drive! I will be going 1000 miles.
big help and thanks Robert-
1- just rented uhaul this weekend for a move next month and about the p/u and drop they add the clause "may not be exact location"
2-about the ins- they gave us the same info, more towards broken windshield, cracks or rocks hitting- scratches along the side
3- OIL- best tip you gave and this is something i told my wife, last thing i want is to be stuck on 95 at midnight because of no oil or temp light-
im buying 4 qts (shouldnt cost more than 20) and keeping it in the cab. 20-30 bucks is worth its wgt in gold just in case something goes wrong at night time or during rush hour
thanks again
vaporeizied8 You are welcome. I have seen these trucks BLAZING on the interstate. Add prayer to your list.
Thank you for the infomitive video, I plan to move in about a year an a half. I have been so nervous about the moving process but this video has made me realize that I don't need to stress about it as much.I have been wondering about the car Dolly's and you made it so easy to understand, thank you so much.

God bless you too.
Thank you Robert, this video is full of great information. I've SUBSCRIBED and look forward to your videos.
Thanks for your support.
Thanks for some good info. I am just discovering your video. I have driven the small uhaul van and the 10', but for no more than about 60mi. Trust me, I didn't know any of this stuff, I just got in and drove. Always helpful for someone who knows how to use these vehicles and in the safest manner possible. I am contemplating a move across country and I am concerned with these moving companies screwing over people and changing prices. I am a DIY kind of person , so this is extremely helpful. I am saving this video.
Thanks for watching

I know this is a super old vid but just wanted to say thank you. Very helpful tips and insights, specifically; the kind that only come from experience. Love the honesty too btw. Ramps down after 3/4 of a mile, they were hot😉. Nice!
😜 Thanks for watching.
Nice video! Very thorough! Helpful info! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching.
THANK YOU!! for doing this. Years ago I used a 10 ft Uhaul towing a car from Georgia to North Carolina, and never checked the straps but made it fine. Now 18 years later, I am about to use a 15 ft Uhaul while towing my SUV from California to Georgia. Thanks to you, I will definitely be checking the straps. I was also concerned about having my car vulnerable to theft, since this isn't a done-in-a-day drive, but I see your solution with the locks on the chains. Very helpful and thorough video. Again, Thank You!
Thanks for watching and I hope all goes well.
How did it go? Ill be doing a Cali to FL real soon. Any tips?
@@zig8100 Everything went great. I had everything locked as he suggested. The straps weren't a problem either. I was obsessive with check them at every gas up😂. Overall, I had problems at all with the UHaul and the trailer. My tip would be to not rush and take your time. I took my time and took 7 days. Good luck with your move! Let me know how it goes.
Thank You. Im trying to do it in 3 or 4 days. I need the luck lol
I just fell in love with your humbleness! great advices too!
Thanks for watching
Cool. Thanks for watching.
An in-town tow is more forgiving, mpg doesn't matter that much, and you don't have to tow a car. If the truck isn't big enough, make another trip.
Thanks a lot...am about to drive from Arizona to Ohio.I was nervous, but this video helped.
Did you moved already ? How'd it go ? Coz i'm thinking of moving from Ca to Ohio
lupina29 same !!

Thanks for the tip about checking your auto insurance! I'm looking to rent a U-Haul soon, so I will definitely look into that!
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video Robert. I am only going from Houston to Dallas but I was worried about towing my front wheel drive. This was good information about the dolly. And great information about the change in market rates. I would definitely go hit with that one.

This was very helpful, Robert. Thanks very much!
You are welcome.
Great Video. Very informative for those who may be planning a move. I would like to offer a couple of explanations to clear a couple of things up that were mentioned on the video, and try to help
First, the U-Haul truck rates do vary from week to week, based on local supply, and demand of where the truck is going (excessive inventory as opposed to thin inventories) It is advised that the reservation be made as soon as you can, and if the rates go up, you are locked in. Likewise, if you look, and notice that the following week after you make the reservation, that the rate went down, just call the U-Haul Reservation line, and they will reduce your rate to that current lower rate.
As far as locations, U-Haul has the most locations of Corporate Moving Centers and independent dealers in North America. When you make a reservation, it is sent to a Regional Office in your area who's job it is to schedule your reservation to a location. I know that they do all they can to send it to your preferred pick up location, but if that location does not have it, they do download it to a close location that does. (U-Haul does not have transfer drivers, so the Regional office tries to get equipment dropped off from previous rentals at your preferred location, or as close to it as possible) And as far as requesting exact drop locations, there are times that some locations cannot accept equipment coming in. This would be mostly due to allowed capacity based on available space, or even local zoning ordinances. Sometimes, they are leasing their property from developers, and they are allowed a limited number of trucks or trailers.
Safemove/ Safetow coverage is optional, but always recommended. Even if your personal policy were to cover the equipment, YOU would still be immediately responsible to reimburse U-Haul for any damages incurred during a rental, then it would be your responsibility to get reimbursed from your carrier. These coverages are also nice because if something does happen, claims on your policy would be minimized, therefore, your rates may not go up. You can get more information on the coverage options provided by U-Haul @ www.uhaul.com/DamageCoverage
The miles per gallon calculations are estimations for ideal driving circumstances. Many conditions can affect this number, including driving with a load, road grades, weather conditions and vehicle speed. If at the end of a rental, you still feel that the MPG was lower than what it should have been, the U-Haul Customer Service Department can assist you.
U-Haul International and their members are here to assist in any way possible. From Reservations, Location pick-up, and if needed, 24/7 Road service to assist in case of a problem. Never be afraid to contact U-Haul if you have any questions about a reservation, equipment, hitch, or supplies. You can get a lot of information by clicking here: www.uhaul.com
Hi Dale, I assume you are an employee of U-Haul, if so, please disclose. Thank you very much for your additional information. Hopefully all of this information is on your website. Very informative, would have been nice for me to have know the info provided (I was aware of some of it, as explained in the video). I made and posted the video to help others have a smooth experience in doing a self move. Again, thank you for the info, I'm sure others do appreciate it as well. Dale Teille
Thank you! You offered some great advice. I already emailed my insurance agent! We will make sure the ramp is in too. Have a great day!
LOL Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the video! It's gonna come in handy when I move soon.
Thanks for watching.
Hi Mr Robert, my wife and I are going to be moving from Baltimore to Williamsburg Virginia. Your video is a really big help. We took notes and we are still in the preparation phase. Thank you again for the info.
Cool, thanks for watching. Sometimes you can get a better rate on a truck if you return it where you pick it up from.
Thanks for sharing all of your tips and mistakes. Great information.
Thanks for watching
Really good tips and advice. I'm doing this and pulling a full vehicle trailer in about a month...if closings go as I hope.... Thanks for the info !
Glad it was helpful!
@@RobertDIY Update.. I left Virginia and made it in 2 days to the Vero Beach area of Florida. Had to jump up to the very largest Uhaul truck ( 26 footer) with a full vehicle trailer behind . I had to go to 2 different locations for the 2 rentals. The most convenient location (same place I made my reservations from) had neither of the two. The mileage out on the contract was about 80 miles more than was on the odometer. Other issues as well. ( I was authorized about 950 miles for the charged amount on contract) All said and done, although it was a frustrating Uhaul experience, I did get it done. I will say the people at the turn in location were so cool, it made up for most of the frustration. It is important to retighten the tire straps. At first check, my driver's side front tire strap was very loose and had shifted off the top of the tire. I didn't realize the strap tightener device does move and needs to be shifted directly in front of the tire before tightening. When I was trying to connect the trailer to the Uhaul truck, it would not lock into place on the tow ball even with bouncing, shifting the vehicle back and forth, etc. The trailer ball area was so dry it was almost frozen. It only locked on after it was doused with WD40 to loosen it up. The trailer speed limit is posted as 55 mph on the trailer. I looked down at the speedometer and was doing over 55 with great, safe, handling. So..... I arrived sooner than otherwise expected. The radio did have an AUX input so I was able to stream a combo of Pandora and Howard Stern along to 13 or so hours. The rig is so big, I went to triple A in advance and had them map out for me only large gas stations every 200 or so miles. These larger (truck) stations were better accommodating for large truck and trailer combos. I also pre entered each station on my phone GPS and saved the trip for ease of heading to the next stop. Oh, don't forget to put the ramps out before backing your truck off of the trailer. It can happen with so much on one's mind. (Moves are stressful). Having said all of that, so far Florida life has made worth it, all of the frustration with selling, buying, moving, etc.
Oh, almost forgot...USAA DOES NOT cover Uhaul rentals, only traditional rental vehicles. I had to buy the uhaul insurance for the truck and trailer.
Good luck in your move and thanks again Robert.
Very informative. Thanks Robert!
You are welcome.
Nice job on this video, lots of good info. Thanks!

You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
Very informational.. Doing a move from South Florida to Cleveland OH Summer of 2015 and also will be using the 17' and car dolly. Thanks for the tips!
Nicholas Tersigni You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
Nick, click on the moving helper icon on their website. You can get cheap labor to help you load and unload. We are affiliated with uhaul and it is a great deal. We cover from Sarasota to Naples. Also, rent a budget truck. They are the best deal.

Do they give free estimates?
Robert DIY local moves are charged at an hourly rate. However, most will come to your home and give you a ball park on how long it will take. But, if they say 3 hours and it happens to take 4, then you will be charged for 4. The billing time should never include breaks or time lost due to movers. During the summer, if we have an 8 hr move we may stop half way for 30 min to cool off. Customer should not be billed for that time.
great video . lots of tips i will look out for when i make my move in the next few months. Thanks :)
Thanks for watching.
Thank you. A lot of helpful information. I’ve never driven a vehicle so big and am not looking forward to driving such a big vehicle with my car hitched the back of it in 7 days 😩
You should be okay. Just be careful and try not to get into a situation where you need to back up.
Outstanding video, big help, will recommend it. thank you!
+zillabeast Thanks for watching.
Thank you for such a detailed video. You saved me a lot of money and time.
You are welcome
I'm so grateful for you making this video! I'm about to drive across country with a 10 ft truck and car carrier, but I've never driven a uhaul before. I really need to see how big the cab is but I'll continue to look for that. Very informative, I sure appreciate it! God Bless You!
+Trina James thank you.
You're most welcome!
+Trina James well, may God bless you with a comfortable, safe and uneventful trip. 😇
Thanks a bunch, I pray the same thing, believe me! :D
I totally agree with you Trina! I am planning a move from Nebraska to MS (a little over 800 miles) and this video was so very informative. And I was thinking about towing my 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee as well. I've driven a Uhaul before but never this far. I'm a little nervous about stopping for gas and clearing the pumps but I'm sure it'll be ok. I will need about a 15' truck...Mercy
Very helpful information. Thank you so much for posting this.

Good, useful information. Thanks for taking the effort and helping others.
Thank you for watching.
Robert DIY Thanks for the video. Around here(Ontario, Canada) they always give you a bigger truck then you order i got ordered a 14' they give me a 26'. Since my wife was driving and i was concerned about the fuel economy i called and got 60 bucks taken off and get a bigger truck then i needed.
Excellent video. Very informative. Much appreciated.
Thank you for watching.
Thanks! Quite informative. I have done multiple UHaul truck moves but have not done one with a car dolly. I tried with one move from Massachusetts to Virginia but the dolly lights did not work and I was leaving at night. I had to abandon the dolly and my van I was going to tow since I had a house closing the next morning. I had to take a bus back to Massachusetts to get my van then drive it back. Make sure those dolly lights work!
Ouch! Usually the rental center checks the lights to make sure they work.
Thanks for the Great Video, Robert. Great Information
Thanks for watching.
Great job brother. This helped me immensely
