I'm African, look like anyone could beat me up, but even though I attended different martial arts schools since 5 I feared confrontation, so I never competed at competitions and I got robbed a lot throughout highschool. I fought a guy who tried stealing my phone for the first time while leaving university at the busstop and I started doing bjj after I earned my own money. Fortunately at a school where the coach practically enforced competing. I never won a bjj fight till 1.5 years after I started, but when I started winning. . . I caught the bug
I still don't like street fights, but cos of my childhood I don't let people "check" me anymore. Competing is very important it teaches you how to approach physical confrontation and how to judge whether a person will really fight you or if they're just bluffing

I think he misses the company of his close friends and family back home he's been in the game for a very long time and been away from home from your loved ones can affect you in so many levels especially in a very discipline sports as martial arts cage fighting ,you tend to miss your friends after beating up opponents after opponents and you change from fighting to want to be friends.
