I’m so pleased I finally found somebody who runs the wires before anything else like sound deadening insulation etc.. That’s definitely the right way to do it love the build thanks for sharing
What a superbly practical and good looking van build. If I ever fulfil my dream of building a van I will use a lot of the ideas you have here. Leaving the hooks in, splitting the bed sliders in half etc. etc. Great job mate, well done.
Nice and simple conversion without spending a fortune great to see a simple conversion. Great looking van built to suit your needs well done and thanks for sharing.
Well proud of my bro - it's been amazing watching this project develop and all the hard work he's put in really shows. You'd be hard pressed to find a commercially done van as precise and as well built as this one and the end product is absolutely brilliant. Hoping you have loads of happy years of motoring and camping in your new camper and it brings as many fun days and adventures as the old 'Go Pro Freda'. :)
Omg I need you sir lol.. for years vanlife has been my dream , im now in the position to realise my dream and to visit my eldest son on the isle of skye has given me more determination than ever and I'd decided to convert a Renault Trafic and also the realisation how dumb I am as far as electrics etc go.. Stunning conversion btw , well done 👏
lol Thanks for your kind words. Yes converting a van is a great thing to do and the freedom to do things when you have a camper van is the ultimate payoff. Things are daunting at first but there are some many useful and informative videos on youtube that help so much. All the best with your conversion. Dave
Beautiful job you've done on this. The finish is what I would expect from a professional company/conversion business. I've been toying with doing the same for nearly 6 years on and off. My dog and young daughter kind of took over my thoughts, but my daughter is now 2 and I think something like this would be an amazing experience and offer great learning opportunities for her. And the dog is so placid, he would be fine.
Thank you. Sounds like now is the perfect time to do it. You wont regret it. Best thing I've done is getting a van and having a professional built one before this, I saw how simple they were to build, So decided I could make one myself that better suited my needs. Good luck and happy travels if you decide to go for it. Atb Dave
Cheers for watching and cimmenting. This van is an ideal size, it's been working out really well. Recently did an update video showing a few changes/additions I've made to it also. All the best with your van hunt. Dave
Very well made video. One conversion I'd like to have seen the making of. Thanks for not taking up too much time on stuff you bought, and focusing on stuff you made. BTW you had my undivided attention @11:30 when I saw the axe. We all need protection out in the wild. Cheers.
That's one of the most sensible layouts I've seen. Love it. I was going to do the similar until I got the wife pregnant again. I have to buy a pull tested rock n roll bed now ££££ 🤦♂️
Thanks. It works out really well. I'd looked at a swb before buying this but figured it would be too small for what I wanted. Just had a look at your van, looks like you have done a great job. Atb Dave
Hey Daren, yep I still have a soft spot for the Freda and I haven't quite let it go yet. Still thinking about carrying out all the repairs it needs to get it back on the road. Cheers. Atb Dave
Thanks so much for this video. I've just bought a 2007 swb trafic so I can take my electric bike places. I really love your conversion and which you had made a guide so I could follow you.
Great practical build, im doing a similar non Rock and roll build but I'm installing a pop top for sleeping and increased headroom, plus going with single swivel front seats (like to be able to walk through from front to back) Same van really, a 2018 vivaro lwb.
Thanks. Thats Cool. Yes a pop top roof is very tempting. I’d um’d and ah’d over swivel seats but decided I like my 3 seats and half bulk head more. I can climb over with middle seat folded down so its not all bad. Deffo will make your van more comfortable to have the swivel though. All the best with your build. Happy camping Atb Dave
Great conversion! I have the vivaro version of the same van, which I want to convert, and this is exactly how I want to do it with the same style of sofa/bed. Great job! 👍🏻
Really enjoyed the video. I have a T5 converted but currently an MOT fail. Nothing majorly wrong but garages not keen to work on the size of van. I like what you have done and would certainly suit motorcycle racing trips. Thx
Happy to hear you enjoyed it. Aye my van is working out well for me. Got more into mountain biking since building it and it awesome to just be able to throw the bike in the back and still be able to access most of the stuff. Hope you find somewhere that will be happy to fix your van for you soon. Atb Dave
Thanks for the fantastic feedback. Currently away in the van and still loving how it all works. This a link to my post on instagram that shows all the sizes. instagram.com/p/CN_EaGvhTA1/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Atb Dave
What a great design! I don't like the rock n roll design at all and this is the design I have been looking at but you're the 1st person I have seen made to work. Great work. The 90cm width is the only issue for me but I think the work around for me would be to have 2 sizes, one like yours with 90cm and another one with full width pull out. I guess I just need to have a extra set of cushions in the garage for when I don't go away alone and full width is required or get the pop top installed as we will be 3 at times.
Thanks, Yes it working really well but yes I found that with the bed and have also made slot in extensions that bridge the gap between the bed and the cupboards which give around another 30cm. With an extra set of cushions its quite comfortable for 2. A pop top would be ideal.Atb Dave
Nice van, bit 'grey' for me but that's a matter of taste, certainly like the amount of storage you seem to have built in and the lighting also, nice job!
Cheers Martin. Turned out it was too grey for me too. Have since painted all the cupboards bright orange. It's brightened it up and given it a bit more character. Layout is working out fantastically .Atb Dave
@@playing_in_trafic I meant to say I don't fancy the rock n roll type myself Dave lol, I'll edit that bit in my post. That's why I liked your layout, no RnR bed 👍
No worries. I thought that might have been what you meant. Yep the bench seat frees up a lot of space and a lot more van usability over the RnR bed as well as the lounging comfort. Atb Dave
Thanks for the info that the twin burner with aerosol gas canisters meets DVLA spec as long as its screwed down, I thought it had to be the more permanent bottle fed type. Save me a few £££'s there.
Yes it makes things a lot easier. The DVLA requirements have changed a lot since I built this and it looks like they only require a single burner now, can still have more though.
Excellent video, that really is a great conversion of a good van, the only thing that I probably missed was where your clothes and food items are stored? Of course if you have Really Useful boxes with that stuff in they can sit in the cab when on site, a bonus of keeping the living and driving spaces separated.
Nice looking van. I like the way you designed the furniture. I have the 2015 model Renault Trafic which I partially converted, intending to use for a wheelchair or gopher if needed. I can move everything out of the van in about 15 minutes should I need to convert it for a mobility chair.
Thanks. They are great vans to convert. Yours sounds very interesting. Subbed your channel and will watch your videos later on today. Cheers for your comment. Atb Dave
Would like to ask a couple more questions please what in your opinion would need to change in the design flow if you had gone for a mwb it’s hypothetical but I am interested in what your thoughts are taking into account I would use it as as fishing van I could go for an inflatable kayak instead of a moken hard boat ? I am 5 ft 8 so would still want to be able to lounge on the long bench . What was the main driver for going for a 2018 van finally what would be a flexible budget for me to consider to achieve similar to your build I assume at some point you could retro fit e hook up ? Thanks again great watching ps had a good week last week in the trossachs fishing. Great area for van and kyak 👍
In the case of a trafic the smaller version to this would be the swb a total length 5m. This lwb is only 5.4m so not a huge difference externally. Inside however it would probably mean doing away with, or severely cutting down the cupboard at the end of the bed. Not an option for me as I needed that for the fridge. Also would require a bit of size reduction on the kitchen but could easily be done. I didn't want to compromise so went for the bigger van. On that I opted for a new van, at the time, as I plan on keeping and using it for the long term. I wasnt prepared to spend my time and money on an older van that may develop faults quite soon after all the effort of the conversion. In terms of budget it could be done easily between £2-3K. Possibly less if you shop around on marketplace etc for bits. Yes e hookup could easily be retro fitted. I have used a tent hookup cable, basically a caravan hookup cable with a couple of protected sockets(and a battery charger) run through the window a couple of times but that was before the solar was added. I often take my inflatable kayak away on trips. Stores in back behind front seat when travelling and on the passenger seat at night. Works out great. Last time I used it was actually in the Trossachs on Loch Drunkie. It is a lovely area. Atb Dave
Ah drunkie lovely we where on Achray The 3 locks drive is just great for you guys thanks again for your prompt reply I take on board the difference in length and the benefits as you say 👍
Great build,I’m just starting my build was wondering what did you do to cover the top corners where you removed the top section of the bulkhead,as it is shaped and if I put a flat bit of shaped ply I’ll have a gap between the cab headliner and ply wood. Thanks
@@riley135 Thanks. All the best with your build. I just left those bits uncovered as they are hidden behind my cab curtains. I didnt see any real benefit to boxing them in. Atb Dave
It sure does. I looked at a swb before I bought this and realized it wasn't gonna work for what I wanted. Lwb can be a pain in tighter carparks but worth it for the space it gives you. Atb Dave
When reviewing kyaks I am leaning more to a rigid sit on so the that has arisen is the size of kyak a lwb can fit in what is your view assuming the lower bulk head us kept in place etc thanks again Alan
Well my biggest rigid boat is 2.8 metres and it fits in without difficulty. I'd guesstimate a 3 metre+ boat would fit utilising the underseat pass through. It will allow a 4.2 metre length of timber etc to pass under the seat but as a boat widens up from the ends it reduces available length.
Love the idea of the gas stove :) - I'll be robbing that idea - Layout is perfect! Though being 6'8" it'll be a tight fit for me to build same - - - Some brilliant ideas though. Cheers
I faced a similar problem, being 1.98m tall. I opted for an L2 and fitted a Cambee full width R&R with an extended section which makes a full euro kingsize bed. I have room for a 90L compressor fridge, a marine oven, 100L fresh water, shower point, water heater, diesel heater, twin L-ion batteries, camp gear storage and room for my mountain bike. It took some thought, but i'm happy with the result. Once I get my oven sorted, i'll have to post a video of the completed project.
Superb conversion. Will be taking lots of ideas for my project this spring. One question. When the bed is made. How do you not slip between the cushions?
Hi, really enjoyed the video. Could you please tell me where you sourced the small net pockets for the rear doors? I have just carpeted the door cards and would like to be able to store things in the 2 ‘holes’. Thanks 😊
Hi I have a Renault traffic 2005 long wheelbase and have really enjoyed watching your film ,and am very keen to do a similar layout ,if not the same layout . Would it be possible to get some sizes like the width/lengths off your cupboards, your bed and any other sizes that could help me would be much appreciated . I live North off Inverness so I hope you can help out 🏴👍
Hopefully this works but if not if you go to my van Instagram page and look there are some basic plans on there. User name #playingintrafic General layout instagram.com/p/CN_EaGvhTA1/? Bed Details instagram.com/p/COa8WNAh9Fl/?
hi mate, can you tell me how wide your counter top is from the window to the front of the sink unit and the overal length please.hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance
As the worktop is shaped to run along the wall it varies a bit in width but the average is around 40cm wide, length of worktop is 120cm. Hope that helps. Atb Dave
Love this build and am inspired by it I am planning on doing something similar to your build. By any chance would you have measurement of you're bed layout and kitchen unit ?? Be much appreciated
Thanks I'm glad to hear you like it. I have added a rough sketch with sizes on my instagram @playingintrafic hopefully this link will take u direct to the sketch but plenty of build pics on there aswell which may help out. instagram.com/p/CN_EaGvhTA1/?igshid=l6guiqr26q7p Atb Dave
Yes it has to be the best build for the the traffic that I have seen. I really appreciate your help again on this! And just the dimensions of your cushion would also know roughly! Keep you the adventure thanks buddy
Thanks. Cushion overall is 190cm x 90cm. Cut into 2 x (60 × 95cm) and 2 x(30 × 95cm) and is 5 inches thick (4 inch medium density foam with 1 inch of the soft stuff glued on top) Hope this helps, all the best with your build. Dave
Sorry again for been annoying you! I've done the kitchen an other storage area and am on the bed now. Is there any chance you'd have any drawings an measurements of the bed layout be great help. Thanks again
Thats great u got kitchen and storage done. Sorry I don't have any drawings of the bed. I can perhaps do one in my freetime sometime this week, will get back to u with that. Atb Dave
Class van! This vid was a big inspiration for my own vivaro build. You don't by any chance have a link for where you got the bin bag bracket at 7.07 in the video? I'm looking for a low profile one like that but can't seem to find any
Thanks. Glad to hear the video was an inspiration. Van has been working out great for me. The bin bag holder I can't find anywhere that has them in stock but here's a link to one on ebay that may help in your search. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CARAVAN-SNAP-SACK-RUBBISH-BIN-WASTE-BAG-HOLDER-motorhome-boat-camping-/154180320157?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 It's a handy wee thing, best of luck. Atb Dave
I would be interested to know how you secured the floor, cupboards, bed etc to the van without having to drill too much into the van. Do you have a video which covers this?
Sorry no video. The floor is screwed down through the base of the van, all the screws were then treated from underneath. Cupboard then screwed down to the floor and to the walls using corner brackets. In some places on the walls I screwed lengths of timber attached to the van body behind the ply to offer more support, particularly for the bed. I've recently done another van but used rivnuts in the metal walls, these work really well and I think offer stronger support. Atb Dave
Hi mate do you no if the automatic trafic's are reliable ? I need a reliable auto van from 2016 onwards as I live in a ulez zone . The wet belts have put me off going for a ford
@@Billy88london Sorry I don’t have any experience with the automatics so can’t comment on them meaningfully. I can however say that my Trafic has been and continues to be fantastic. Only issues for me in the last 6 years have been an exhaust Nox sensor and an EGR valve. I’d happily get another Trafic when the time comes. Atb Dave
@@playing_in_trafic thankyou , electrics confuse me so much so I'm thinking of getting the ecoflow 4000 watt power station that just came out. IL be using alot tho that's the thing 😂 plus IL have my girlfriend a few nights a week which she will no doubt use hair dryers etc
Thanks. Van is working out great for me. The lengths vary depending on where on bed they are positioned but they are made from 45mm x 12mm redwood. Atb Dave
Just found this and your van looks great, just the van I want to get for my build. Sure I read about not using this type of insulation due to it still getting damp. You had any issues with the insulation getting damp and would you says it's as warm as using the likes if kingspan
Cheers. I think provided there is a decent vapour barrier it is ok. If no moisture can get near it can't condense and form dampness. Plus it is way less work than solid kingspan, which suits me. I think it just comes down to personal preference. I used it on my old van and had no issues. Thanks for the question. Atb Dave
Thanks. Tea and coffee is in there under the sink (although I think that cupboard was a bit messy in this video) also carry a few tins of beans etc in a box in rear cupboard but usually stock up on food when I am heading out and have to stash it in various locations in the van. Hadn't heard the Rob Halford comparison before but yeah I see the likeness haha. Cheers Atb Dave
Used to drive an older shape version of this...Hope they've improved the turning circle since then...Overall though. Much better than the new Transit. (Fiesta on Steroids)..Looks Great!
Cheers, it's a bit of a beast to turn compared to my old van but that's more due to the extra length than the steering so it's not terrible. Thanks for watching. Atb Dave
v cool video. I am dreaming for a similar project. may ask about the fridge? How gets power? electric or works with propane? What do you recommend?Cheers
Hi Paddy. Thanks for the kind words. This layout works fantastic. The stove I got on ebay but unfortunately they have since shot up in price from £25 that I paid to between £60 and 70. Hoping they come back down in price but they are great stoves so possibly not overly expensive. Atb Dave
Great van. Thank you for sharing. I'm looking to get a trafic crew cab lwb. How is the bulkhead attached? Was it easy to cut in half and remove? Enjoy your travels.
Thanks. Happy you like the van. The bulkhead on this model comes from Renault already as upper and lower pieces. To remove the upper section it was a case of removing about 6 or 8 bolts and drilling out two rivets. The upper section then lifted out. The top edge of the bottom section is quite sharp so I added a length of rubber u trim to make it safe. I would imagine if u had to cut a bulkhead down it would cut fairly easily with a jigsaw and then u could do the same and finish of the edge with rubber u trim.
@@playing_in_trafic Great thank you. Will post the result of any camper conversion work I do - but I need to buy the van first which won't be for a while.
Hi Dave. It's powered direct from fusebox linked to leisure battery. I've never heard of that except possibly for 3 way fridges as they sap power and are only recommended running on 12 volt whilst travelling. 12 volt compressor fridges like mine are a lot more efficient so work ok running off the battery. Hope that helps. Atb Dave
@@playing_in_trafic Cheers for that Dave, looking to start a project soon. Yours is simply superb. Any idea's how long the battery lasts with the fridge running straight from it?
Depends on a lot of different factors but mine is ok for a weekend easily without moving van, 100Ah battery. A little less in very hot weather. If I'm driving about it charges battery. All the best with your build.
Thanks David. The paint I used is a Colours Satin Floor Paint from B&Q. Gives a really nice finish on the mdf but scratches off the reclaimed vinered chipboard doors quite easily. Atb Dave
How does the van handle in the mountains, narrowish roads? What is the fuel consumption like, now that it is heavier? What size engine would you recommend? (for mountains) ...I'm thinking a 2 L size engine would be fine, but I have no experience yet. Thanks.
Hi, Got to say it handles really well on all roads. Not had any problem on narrow roads. Average fuel consumption dropped from 38.5mpg to 37.5mpg once I had fitted everything, so not bad at all. I can't exactly say what engine would be best as I only have experience of this one. It's the 1.6L twin turbo euro 6 diesel and I have been impressed with it so far. Thanks for questions. Atb Dave
Hi. Does not being able to stand up in the van become annoying? I'm looking at a conversion and was thinking of a Vivaro. I'm 5ft 6 and think the interior is 5ft 4?
I'm used to it, I'm 5'11. You get the hang of kneeling or sitting down for stuff. Vans you can stand up in are nice but I like being able to access height restricted carparks which taller vans don't fit in. Atb Dave
@@playing_in_trafic I know what you mean about car parks with barriers and such like, plus with a smaller van, you can get in parking spaces easier. LWB vans will always be a problem if parking is tight. I don't tend to see much rust on Vivaros either, or Renault Traffics.
Yep you are spot on with the rust. That was one of the reasons I choose the Trafic. We have a couple of older vans in the family an 06 trafic and a 05 master and both are relatively rust free.
Hey. Yep no problem Kitchen is approx 40cm deep, 70 cm high, 120cm long. The bench is 60cm deep, extending to 90cm, 36cm high before cushions are on 50cm deep with and 190cm long.
Thanks for the kind comments. I would say you get a couple of hours burn from a gas cartridge. Not really that great but they are fairly cheap if you buy in bulk, I usually pay around £1 each for them. Atb Dave
All I can say is wow mate!!! Top job!! Are you a tradesman of sorts? As all very professional looking, especially as its home built... I'm going to the secc next weekend to get some ideas and contacts as I'm looking to do a similar build for this summer. If you don't mind me asking what did the build cost you minus the van? I have around 8 grand to play with but really want to save as much as possible on materials so as buy as good a van as I can. Also how do you find the trafic on running costs? Any info would be much appreciated...
Thanks. No I'm not a tradesman, just done a lot of diy over the years. The show at secc is fantastic for getting ideas. My build wasn't very much at all, I never fully totalled everything up but I estimate around £2000. Most of that is in hidden stuff like the sound deadening, wiring and the insulation and carpeting. Making the cupboards, bed etc was less than £200. I'm loving the Trafic, it's awesome on fuel being only a 1.6L but still has loads of power due to the two turbos. Not had a service yet so not sure what those costs are like but will find out soon as its due in March. All the best with your build. Dave
Hi Dave, what are your thoughts on a roof vent, do you think I would require one with 2 of us sleeping in the van? Also what was your reason for carpeting the door cards when they were brand new? Cheers mate. 👍
Hi. Yep I think a roof vent is a good idea. Wish I had fitted one. I tend to leave the front windows open a crack but still end up with quite a bit of condensation on the windows. I am considering retro fitting one with a fan. I carpeted the door cards simply to tie the look all together and I think it makes it feel a bit cosier than just bare plastic. They were so easy to do and the carpet wasn't expensive. Atb Dave
Cheers Dave, bought a Fiamma 28F the one without the fan. Apparently the only place I have to fit it is just were you enter the side door at the centre point. Those structural cross members get in the way everywhere else. Just carpeted a door card this evening and it turned out great, mine were kind of scuffed anyway. Did you fit that rubber gasket back on behind the door card? Those mesh nets are a great idea, are they from ebay? Don't see any screw fixings on them. Thanks for your help. :)
@@irishrover63 Sounds good. Yeah I need to have a good look at my roof before deciding on one as I have a 250W solar panel waiting to go on too. Glad door card covering went well, don't think mine had a rubber gasket but if they did I would have kept them. I couldn't find the right size mesh nets on ebay, maybe they have them now but I got mine from www.kiravans.co.uk. They are screwed on I think they have little round covers over the screw heads.
Thanks very much. I have considered and fitted a diesel night heater and have to say money well spent. Got a video showing where I fitted it etc on my channel. Thanks for watching Atb Dave
Hi I used one of your videos years ago to install a low coolant alarm in my Bongo, at the beginning of January i bought Vauxhall Vivaro for the same reasons you bought yours, bongo needed more and more welding. Have you fitted a low coolant alarm into the Traffic ? if so which one? Really nice work on the Trafic, Cheers Gabby
Good choice on the Vivaro. Really hated moving away from the Freda but I've been really happy with the way the Trafic is working out for me. Fuel efficiency is absolutely fantastic. I do miss the 4x4 in winter though. I haven't fitted a coolant alarm on the Trafic. Hadn't really thought about it to be honest. Not sure if it would have something already. I'll look into it. I know it's not got all the additional pipes to rear heater etc like the Bongo which were a common failure point resulting in total coolant loss. So its not as much a worry but yeah worth thinking about. Cheers Atb Dave
@@playing_in_trafic The Vivaros and Traffics temp light will come n Red if theres a problem, but could be too late by the time that happens... I really enjoy driving the Vivaro, I've got a pop top on too, and as its a LWB it has loads of room up top for storage and someone can sleep up there, and the hatch is at front so they can pop down without trampling the person below.
Great job and a very practical van. Would like to see it when your solar panels etc are fitted. I’m about to start a swb version so a lot of your wee ideas will come in very handy. Thanks
Hi Stuart. Unfortunately I cant remember how much I used. I do know I bought 2 rolls of the sound deadening and had to order I think 2 more but I did use more than is necessary. As for the dacron I used some I had in already and then ordered an additional 10 meters. Sorry can't be more precise. Atb Dave
Yes I sound deadened and used dacron on the roof. Didn't use battons as the box section in the roof were perfect for screwing into. Hardest part was gluing extra foot wide piece of board to big sheet to make up the width as I could only buy 8' x 4' sheets of ply. If u have instagram my #playingintrafic page has a lot of photos of my build on it.
h3r34thebanter ok thanks again I’ll take a look at that 👍I was looking at mine I thought crossmembers on roof I thought you could screw ply to that also cheers
Hi mate, doing well ta. Hope you are too. I got them as part of these kits, I used the other parts on another project. I used 2 on the bed but the one on the fridge cupboard doesn't work well as its being used the wrong way round. Really needs to be on the back wall rather than the side. They are perfect for the table though. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383402952620 Atb Dave
Cheers mate, but a tad expensive for me as I only need the twist closure. I'll look into a magnetic catch or similar. Have the kitchen unit built now. Have used the van for a few trips. What a difference with some decent foam on the bed instead of the self inflating mat. 👍
@@irishrover63 Yeah unfortunately they are pretty pricey. Magnets do sound like a good option. Glad you have been getting out in the van and yeah having a decent mattress makes a heck of a difference. Look forward to seeing it all done. Atb Dave

Hi Dave, I'm at the bench/bed making stage. I intend using the wheel arch as a leg. The length of my bench/bed will be the same length as yours. I'm trying to figure out what length the other 3 supporting legs should be. I assume using a spirit level in a van is pointless. If I measure from the floor to the bottom of my timber frame resting on the arch, will this give me the other leg lengths?
Just built the bed Dave and when pulled out it measures just over 1 meter. Now I have to think about the foam. I guess that your back support is 30cm and your seat is 60cm to give you 90cm. Because I have a side window in the same place that you have, I can't go over 30cm on the back rest as it would then cover the window. Any suggetions?
hmm that's a tough one. I actually made a removable extension to mine recently by adding extra boards and extra 30 cm cushions to reach kitchen cupboards makes it upto a 120 cm wide small double. Helped us fit 2 adults and a kid. Extra cushions and boards store between rear doors and fridge cupboard during the day. I'll have a think. I kinda have an idea but not 100% sure how to work it or explain it. I think I may need to make a video.
Great video mate. I was looking at ready made VW T5 campers and way out of my budget. I had a look at the Renault Trafic vans as a used purchase and way cheaper. I have never done a project like yours, but you have inspired me. How much does it cost to get the side windows professionally done? Great looking van both inside and out and a fellow Scot also. Lol. :)
Cheers. Yeah the Trafic/Vivaros make for great campers and are way cheaper and I think nicer than the overpriced VWs. I got the windows fitted as an option when I got the van new from the dealer. Supplied and fitted I think they were around £600. Looking at the price of kits on ebay I think I overpaid a good bit and reckon you could get it done for a good bit less than that. This was my first build of this scale too but I loved doing it and am so happy with how it all worked out. All the best with your build when you go for it. Atb Dave
Can i ask if this newer Vivaro has a smart alternator because i have heard that a different and much more expensive split relay is needed? How did you get around that? Just that in the future i was considering this model but i am a bit put off by the whole smart alternator thing. Many thanks
Well now you mention it, I hadn't actually heard about smart alternators until months after I finished my van and as it turns out it does have one. However I only have a standard split charge voltage sensing relay installed, as this was the type I had in my old van. So far this has been working fine for me. Battery has been charging and 12 volt fridge getting plenty of power. I don't know if I have just been lucky or what?? Thinking of adding solar soon so I may upgrade to a battery to battery system then. Atb Dave
Does the conversion like this (self made) invalidate the warranty? How do you then register as a campervan? Does the insurance get cheaper as a camper? Thank you.
Hi Serge, I am not 100% sure about warranty but I doubt the changes I have made would affect it. It is really just equivalent to simply ply-lining it, everything is just screwed to or through the ply-lining and could all be removed in a matter of hours and leave almost no trace. Registering as a campervan is a lot easier than I though it would be if you follow these guidelines. The sample letter is handy, I ended up sending 19 photos with descriptions and my registration cam back in less than 2 weeks. www.gov.uk/government/publications/registering-a-diy-caravan/converting-a-vehicle-into-a-motorhome Yes the insurance is significantly cheaper as a camper than what it was as a panel van. Thanks for watching. Atb Dave
Hello, This is the best Renault Trafic Van conversion that I ever seen! Congratulations!
Thank you so much for the kind words, this layout is working out great for me. Atb Dave
I’m so pleased I finally found somebody who runs the wires before anything else like sound deadening insulation etc.. That’s definitely the right way to do it love the build thanks for sharing
Thanks. Yep I think it makes sense to do wiring runs first. Glad you think along the same lines. Makes it much easier. Atb Dave
This is the best diy conversion I have seen and the process explained really well. Fantastic job.
Thanks for the kind comments. Atb Dave
This is one of the best conversions I've seen yet. Superb job very well done!
What a superbly practical and good looking van build. If I ever fulfil my dream of building a van I will use a lot of the ideas you have here. Leaving the hooks in, splitting the bed sliders in half etc. etc. Great job mate, well done.
Absolutely amazing. You’ve done a terrific conversion job there.
Thanks for the kind words. Atb Dave
Nice and simple conversion without spending a fortune great to see a simple conversion. Great looking van built to suit your needs well done and thanks for sharing.
Thanks, yes it has been working out well for me. Atb Dave
Dave
Within the first minute I’ve see something that saved me making a mistake and that was the holes for the power cables! Great video, nice conversion.
Thanks for your comment. Glad you found the video useful. Yup that grommet for the cables is super handy. Atb Dave
Atb Dave
Just recommended your van on a self build page on FB. Agree with most comments, excellent build. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for the the recommendation. Glad you like it. Atb Dave
Looks ideal for what I require, simple and efficient build, well done 👍
Watched this video several times, always find something new every time I watch it, now looking for a similar van.👍
Cheers for watching and cimmenting. This van is an ideal size, it's been working out really well. Recently did an update video showing a few changes/additions I've made to it also. All the best with your van hunt. Dave
Actually looking at one in Kilmarnock as I type this, so 🤞
Awesome 🤞
Very well made video. One conversion I'd like to have seen the making of. Thanks for not taking up too much time on stuff you bought, and focusing on stuff you made. BTW you had my undivided attention @11:30 when I saw the axe. We all need protection out in the wild. Cheers.
Thanks for the nice comments, glad you enjoyed the video Oh yeah my axe :D
I'm just about to start on my own project and you've given me plenty of ideas, thank you!
Glad I could help!
Cracking job, nice wee details. Obviously your previous vans and experience has provided you with what is really necessary. 👍
Thanks. Yeah having a van previously helped both to know what I wanted and seeing how the "professional" van converters did stuff.
This is a great looking van you made a really nice job, great colour too.
That's one of the most sensible layouts I've seen. Love it. I was going to do the similar until I got the wife pregnant again. I have to buy a pull tested rock n roll bed now ££££ 🤦♂️
Hi I've just recently completed a conversion myself. Stumbled across yours it is a top job. I struggled for space as mines a swb.
Thanks. It works out really well. I'd looked at a swb before buying this but figured it would be too small for what I wanted. Just had a look at your van, looks like you have done a great job. Atb Dave
As a Bongo owner sad to see yours go but fully understand the constant battle! Great work on the new build.
Hey Daren, yep I still have a soft spot for the Freda and I haven't quite let it go yet. Still thinking about carrying out all the repairs it needs to get it back on the road. Cheers. Atb Dave
Great layout, works very well
Thanks. Yep works well. Made a few slight changes but still working great for what I need.
Great job! 👍🏻
Thanks. All the best with your build. This layout is working out great for me. Atb Dave
Atb Dave
Looking forward to seeing your adventures in the new van.
Thanks for watching, looking forward to sharing some of my adventures too. Atb Dave
Super use of the space, any chance you can put the dimensions of the furniture in the van
Well presented and lovely workmanship, cheers
Thanks for the fantastic feedback. Currently away in the van and still loving how it all works. This a link to my post on instagram that shows all the sizes. instagram.com/p/CN_EaGvhTA1/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Atb Dave
Well thought out, made we think about buying a newer van now and converting my self compared to buying a ready made one.thank you for sharing.
Thanks Alan, all the best with yours if you decide to go for it. Atb Dave
Lovely and neat! Great work mate
Thanks. Happy you think so.
@@playing_in_trafic I meant neat btw :)
@@TheNomadicTrader Aye cheers, I figured that was what you meant. 👍
Excellent! Looks like a professional job. Some top tips in the video.
Thank you. It was a fun project and the van is working out great. Atb Dave
brilliant video. I have the same van but short wheelbase and I'm thinking about a conversion. got some great ideas for it now after watching this
Thanks, glad you liked the video and took away some ideas for your own. All the best with your build. Dave
Hi Nice content. Like the half bulkhead idea, the total conversion is very practical thanks for sharing
Kind regards
Thanks. It all has been working out well for me. Made some alterations since this but the general layout is the same. Atb Dave
A pop top would be ideal.Atb Dave
lovely little van,
top finish too,
enjoy .
Thank you so much.
Excellent work! Congratualtions!
Thanks for watching, glad you like it. Atb Dave
Thanks a new lease of van😊
😊 thanks
That's a really nice layout. I like lounging as well in my van lol. I don't fancy the rock n roll type myself. Subbed 👍☘
Thanks for the sub! This layout does work great for me. Atb Dave
Atb Dave
@@playing_in_trafic 👍👍👍
Atb Dave
Thanks. You did a brilliant job on your van.
Fantastic job mate !! Great to see you back :)
Thanks, glad to be back. :)
Great job. Well done and hope you have many a great trip in it.
Thanks, yes hopefully do plenty of enjoyable trips in it. Atb Dave
Very nice job on the build! Looks Great!
Thank you for the kind words. Atb Dave
Excellently pragmatic Sir.
Thank you.
Atb Dave
@playing_in_trafic ah right OK
Thanks for the reply
Very very nice 👍
It's my same plan but I having problems with the the Italian horrible burocrazie 🤦🏾
Thanks. 👍A shame they are making it difficult. Hope u can get it done somehow.
The long wheel base makes all the diferance. You can do so much more with them.
That’s great thanks for the prompt reply as looking at the feel free moken 10ft 5 inch pdl
Love the idea of the gas stove :) - I'll be robbing that idea - Layout is perfect! Though being 6'8" it'll be a tight fit for me to build same - - - Some brilliant ideas though. Cheers
Thanks for watching, good to know you have got some ideas from my layout. ;) Atb Dave
Thanks. Glad you gained some ideas. The cushions slipping was an issue at first but I now use a fitted bed sheet which keeps them together. Atb Dave
Great job done well .
Hi, really enjoyed the video. Could you please tell me where you sourced the small net pockets for the rear doors? I have just carpeted the door cards and would like to be able to store things in the 2 ‘holes’. Thanks 😊

Class van! This vid was a big inspiration for my own vivaro build. You don't by any chance have a link for where you got the bin bag bracket at 7.07 in the video? I'm looking for a low profile one like that but can't seem to find any

@@playing_in_trafic thanks a million!
Atb Dave
@@playing_in_trafic thanks, for the reply. Once again great build

Wow. Great job. I love the bed storage. What size/thickness are those slats?
Atb Dave
Fantastic job, great use of space, not a lot of foodstuff? Tea coffee? Anybody told you that you look like Rob Halford? Haha
Atb Dave

Hi Dave,
can i ask how you are powering your fridge? I've read that it's not possible to power a fridge straight from a leisure battery?
thanks
Dave
Well thought out layout, I'm thinking of doing very simlar after seeing yours, what paint did you use, it has a good sheen on the mdf. Cheers

Hey there. Could you tell me how deep your kitchen units are and how deep you made the bench, please?
Hey. Yep no problem Kitchen is approx 40cm deep, 70 cm high, 120cm long. The bench is 60cm deep, extending to 90cm, 36cm high before cushions are on 50cm deep with and 190cm long.

Lovely van, lovely video. Have you considered a diesel night heater at all?
Thanks very much. I have considered and fitted a diesel night heater and have to say money well spent. Got a video showing where I fitted it etc on my channel. Thanks for watching Atb Dave
Hi I used one of your videos years ago to install a low coolant alarm in my Bongo, at the beginning of January i bought Vauxhall Vivaro for the same reasons you bought yours, bongo needed more and more welding.
Have you fitted a low coolant alarm into the Traffic ? if so which one?
Really nice work on the Trafic, Cheers
Gabby
Thanks
Thanks, I'll be sure to share any additions if and when I do them so do stay tuned. All the best with your build.Atb Dave
Hi nice conversion
I’m planning similar
Quick question
do you know how much sound deadening & Dacron you used ?
Great work
many thanks Stuart
Hi Stuart. Unfortunately I cant remember how much I used. I do know I bought 2 rolls of the sound deadening and had to order I think 2 more but I did use more than is necessary. As for the dacron I used some I had in already and then ordered an additional 10 meters. Sorry can't be more precise. Atb Dave
h3r34thebanter
Ok thanks
Was the roof ply hard to do ?
Did you use Battons
Did you insulate roof with Dacron ?
Yes I sound deadened and used dacron on the roof. Didn't use battons as the box section in the roof were perfect for screwing into. Hardest part was gluing extra foot wide piece of board to big sheet to make up the width as I could only buy 8' x 4' sheets of ply. If u have instagram my #playingintrafic page has a lot of photos of my build on it.
h3r34thebanter
ok thanks again I’ll take a look at that 👍I was looking at mine I thought crossmembers on roof I thought you could screw ply to that also cheers
Hi Dave, hope you are well. Where did you source the plastic folding table stay, I noticed you also use one for holding the bed frame up? Cheers. :)
Atb Dave
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching
Where did you get the camping stove from
I got it on ebay.
Hia great job on the van 👍🏻
Your waste and fresh water look really tidy and neat! Just wondered what make they are ?
Thanks. The waste and fresh water containers were from Aldi. They're Adventureridge brand and 23 litres each. Think they were between £10-15 each. Atb Dave
A really nice and practical conversion Well done. Can I ask where you got the folding table hinges?
Thanks for nice comment. I got the hinges off ebay this is the link to them.
Hi. Yep that sounds about right. It is a pain not being able to use a level but aye measuring that way should get you your required leg lengths.
Cheers Dave for the quick reply. The project is moving along slowly due to the situation and not being able to source materials. :)
Anytime mate. That's a shame it's been difficult getting supplies. Happy to hear you are making some progress though.
I think I may need to make a video.
excellent! well thought through
Thanks 😊
Nice job!
Thanks
Atb Dave
Buen vídeo gracias por la información.
The sample letter is handy, I ended up sending 19 photos with descriptions and my registration cam back in less than 2 weeks. www.gov.uk/government/publications/registering-a-diy-caravan/converting-a-vehicle-into-a-motorhome
Yes the insurance is significantly cheaper as a camper than what it was as a panel van. Thanks for watching. Atb Dave
Very nice neat and tidy
Thanks Atb Dave
